When you’ve been a fan of Juliette’s since the Dufort Dynasty and have loved all her books she’s come out with since then, you have high expectations. This is how I went into reading this book and thought I would be guaranteed a story that would blow me away or leave me feeling happy and glad I read it. It wasn’t the case with this one. I can’t believe I’m sitting here writing this about one of my favorite authors right now and just feeling annoyed and pissed after finishing it. There was some salvageable parts in this story I did like. For one, the sex scenes were fire and passionate with tons of heat and intensity. There was also a bit more focus on football instead of just being a theme and setting the story is based in. That’s all I can say about this book that was good, everything else had me swearing out loud or rolling my eyes. It started off setting the stage for Kaylee and Levi’s story, filling me in on how they met, first thoughts and what brought them to this point. This I wasn’t mad about, I actually appreciated it rather than the book just starting in the middle of their relationship. Within the prologue I could see where the book was going to go and could basically plan out the rest of the book. Then, I realized that all the teasers and hints that led up to this release winds up being a second chance romance, which you all know I’m not too into. When it’s revealed that Kaylee “cheats” on him what follows is both of them living their life while also secretly still pining for each other. Most of the book has Kaylee and Levi mooning and lusting after each other. With the cheating seemingly being forgotten, Levi realizes he still loves her and wants to still be with her. Can we cue the eye rolls, head shaking and exasperated looks. This book is what the person who cheated wishes would happen and is not reality. In my opinion, once a cheater always a cheater even though she claims she didn’t and states the guy kissed her and she didn’t reciprocate. She still didn’t push him away or say no. Based on what I read, it sounds like he didn’t force himself on her either so you see where my issue is with this story? On top of that, Levi’s back and forth with her annoyed the ever living shit out of me. He wants her, he doesn’t. Then he can’t go out publicly with her so he hides her away as his sex toy and tosses her aside because of pride. I mean, seriously?! Then, the poor girl is getting stringed along and her emotions are getting messed with. I may not understand why she “cheated” or agree with her choice but I wouldn’t wish someone’s feelings to get played with. Then at the end, everything is all good and we all forgive each other and run off in the sunset. It was just ridiculous. I hope Ward’s story is way better than this one.
