All It Takes #1

Repair And Prepare

Rate this book
Jules
One of the hardest lessons I've learned is that the only thing I need is hockey - because hockey has never let me down, never abandoned me. What I lack in my personal life, I make up for with my professional achievements. I’m damn proud of the career I’ve had in the NHL and have no plans of stopping or jeopardizing it by coming out.
That is until I meet Sterling.
He does the unthinkable, he gives me hope, makes me wish for more… and then dashes those hopes and wishes to dust.
In the aftermath, I become someone I don’t particularly like, but that someone doesn’t really care either.
Then, it’s hockey—once more—that saves me.
So yeah, hockey is all I have and all I need.

Sterling
I know I f***ed up.
That I had an excellent reason not to contact Jules after I promised I would—after all my life was a tornado at the time—doesn’t mean I didn’t f*ck up.
I know it and I’m prepared to fix this mess now that I moved to Vegas permanently.
But the man I met more than two years ago is nowhere to be found. The one who opens the door when I come knocking isn’t the sweet boy who desperately wanted someone to take care of him.
No, this man is cynical and detached. Worst of all, he’s hell-bent on never giving me anything real again.
No matter how brief our time was, I know he’s the only person—and I’ve met a lot of people—who’s ever made me want more.
So yes, I’ll fight to repair what I broke and then hopefully we’ll prepare for the rest of our lives together.
The only question is, will it all be in vain?

Repair and Prepare is a Contemporary M/M Hockey Romance intended for adult readers. It's the first book in the All It Takes Series and part of the Fan Service Universe. It involves a legendary hockey player Boy and a rockstar Daddy, an age gap, and found family feels. This book is a standalone, has no cliffhangers, and ends in a HEA. There are a lot of very gay things happening inside this book, so if that's not for you, then this book isn't either. If it is, then welcome to my mostly low-angsty world, I'm thrilled to have you and hope you enjoy this journey.

I really liked Jules and Sterling! I'm not as big a fan of the Daddy/boy dynamic as I am of the Daddy/Brat combo, but they were really sweet together.

It's nice seeing how these two fit into the wider story universe too - I've already read all of the Fan Service series so now I'm going back in time again 😂 One day I might read a story universe in the right order 😂😂

A pretty sweet and sensitive story. I absolutely loved the beginning of the book. It promised dark, kinky sexy things but in time it mellowed out to the point it felt like a different book all together. It's a good story that I've read before , it had all the drama points in light doses (many many drama points)
I have nothing against crying, but Jules cried, a lot, making him seem weak and frail and it sort of ruined the balance of the book for me.
A good read overall.

Hinsel Meyer’s books are always so sweet (and spicy) that I never want to put them down. I was already intrigued by the blurb but the first couple chapters really capture your attention so well that this was a quick read for me! I loved that Jules & Sterling just understood each other so well - they clicked instantly & knew the other was exactly what they were looking for. Of course it’s never that easy tho & they had their challenges, but they got their sweet HEA.

Hinsel Meyer’s books always have the best side characters and this one def didn’t disappoint there - especially when one of them is named Jamie ;)

Jules and Sterling are wonderful characters and I loved their story. They are beautiful together: it's clear since their first encounter that they are what the other needs; I was really glad to see that Jules was completely open to Sterling and completely trusted him with his sexual preferences: he needed someone to help him release the burden he's got on his shoulder because of his role as a captain of the team, all the pressure and the expectations he endures. And Sterling took care of him beautifully.

Sadly, despite they made plans to meet again, life threw a tragedy into Sterling's life and they didn't see each other for a long time.
Their relationship is complicated, especially because Jules' sexuality is not common knowledge, but luckily they have friends who support them completely, like Jamie and Jules' teammates (and Gab, she's always the best!).
I adored Jules' relationship with Ava, he's so sweet with her.

I'm not fond of the daddy kink and I couldn't enjoy their dynamic in bed. But I adored the characters and I'm definitely going to read the next books of the series.

Well. This one is easy and sweet and simple. Usually I’d be rolling my eyes reading something like that. But. Not this time. Somehow, while sweet, it didn’t feel like too much honey. It was a lovely read to decompress and to cleanse my palate after reading several heavier books.

What the hell was that??

I thought this was going to be a fun yet intense daddy romance with a rockstar and a hockey player. What I got was nonstop angst and overblown emotions for the sake of plot filling. That doesn't even count the child. Why. Why in the world was there a surprise baby??

I spite finished this one and by the end I rolled my eyes so hard they almost got stuck.

I’m the only one who gets to see him like this, the only one he’ll be completely vulnerable with. Only me. Because he’s mine and I’m not letting him go.
This boy is mine.

It happens very rarely. But every so often, I find a special book that just immediately takes over my heart, my thoughts, and nothing else matters; I must keep reading, because the story is just demanding my attention and I. CANNOT. PUT. IT. DOWN.

This happened with Repair and Prepare, the upcoming release from Hinsel Meyer.

This hockey x rockstar romance, Daddy/boy, MM love story just possessed me from the moment I picked it up. I became absorbed in Jules Dupont and Sterling's world, and honestly, I still don't want to let them go!

Jules is a hockey superstar. NHL MVP, two-time Stanley Cup winner. Captain of the Las Vegas Pirates. He's still just in his early 20s, and he's got it all.

Except, he hasn't. Jules keeps his teammates, and even his closest friend, Mater, at arms length. He's in the closet and has had a difficult life so far, despite his professional achievements.

Jules is also a boy in need of some comfort from a Daddy. Every so often, he disguises himself and attends a local sex club. Until one night, he meets the Daddy - and man - of his dreams in Sterling.

Sterling is world famous. The rockstar has achieved success, riches, and fame across the globe. But he hasn't met 'The One' and isn't intending to.

But when he meets Jules, everything changes.

These two have such an intense, immediate connection when they meet anonymously at a Vegas sex club. Not just a sexual connection, but an emotional one. I could feel the attraction, the bond, how safe they felt with each other, and yes, the love between them straight away. It was so beautiful.

Unfortunately, life took over every good intention Sterling had to reconnect with Jules when he wanted to. And over two years go by, which hurt Jules deeply. Yes, Sterling could have taken a few minutes to text and explain, but given all he went through, I can definitely give him a pass.

My heart broke for Sterling, Ava, and Jamie. And equally, when I learned of Jules's past, I was absolutely devastated for him. This poor boy has had to fight his whole life and suffered so much trauma, but he has risen to achieve the very best and be a leader of his team. However, he still needed someone to let go with, someone who could take care of him and allow him to set aside his responsibilities for a while. And Sterling was that perfect person, the perfect Daddy for Jules.

He was loving, caring, and the sexual chemistry between them was scorching - hotter than the Vegas desert.

“My good boy. My perfect boy. You love taking Daddy’s c*ck, don’t you?”

“You’re gonna come for me baby, and then you’re gonna lie there and suck my c*ck until I’m coming down your throat. Do you understand?”
“Yes, Daddy. Please.”

I loved Jules's teammates, especially Benny, and I really hope we'll see more of them in the future. I cried over the emotional scenes Jules shared with Benny, so I'm really hoping we'll get his story!

I loved seeing Jules and Sterling growing together and moving past misunderstandings to get to the point of planning their future together, despite the adversity they faced and everything that came their way.

“Will you say it again, baby?”
“I love you, Sterling. I love you, Josh.” I mock-grumble at him calling me by my name but he makes it all better when he keeps going. “I love you, Daddy.”

'I want him forever. My Jules, my boy.'

These two were perfect together, and I absolutely loved this story. It's sweet, sexy, funny, and emotional, and I can't recommend it enough. 😍🥰♥️🏒🎤

My first Hinsel Meyer book and I need to go and devour their previous books immediately.
Repair and Protect has a wonderful balance of heat, happiness, and emotional drama that will keep all readers happy. Jules and Sterling's first meeting seems to be all that dreams are made of, at least for two celebrities who are not out. They're perfectly matched when it comes to their needs and then enjoy each other's company so much that they want more together. Sterling lets Jule's down and it's two years later when he's back and able to explain but Jules won't take this lying down after the dark period he went through.
I love these two men together. Firstly their chemistry is off the charts straight away and they seamlessly fit together in all aspects. Then there is the backstory that each man has. Something that threatens to keep them apart with one man running scared or a certain event that takes all common sense away. The way they come to rely on each other is endearing, in and out of the bedroom. There's comfort and dominance that only Sterling can give to Jules, whilst Jules is all love and support for the people in Sterling's life.
The plot of the story is emotional, which I think is to be expected from this author's book. There is painful history for one of our MC's with a family member passing away years ago as well as an emotionally abusive parent. There is so the recent loss of a best friend, both off page. With two well known celebrities in the closet, coming out is bound to be a thing and that is also not without its drama but with the added aspect of someone else being put into the public/danger with no permission from their family. What makes this story is the hockey team/family that Jules has along with the few family members and band that Sterling has. There is so much love and support amongst those people that you can feel it through the pages and binding them all together. Jamie, Sterling's best friend/sister in law, is a life saver for him, being there every step of the way the last couple of years and I love the way she folds Jules into their tight-knit group. Ava is a shining light in this as well, bringing such light and joy to the lives of her family.
A fantastic read and what makes it even better for me is the final sentence of the book that leaves us with a brilliant teaser for the next in the series. Highly recommended!
**Trigger warnings - mental health, memories of abusive father, off page death of family member and best friend (both told as reminiscing not specific memories of the event) outing of both MC's**
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3 stars

An athlete and a musician pairing is the type of book I gravitate toward, but I found much of this book lacking for my tastes. There is a lot added in and not all of the plot lines are well developed or fully realized at the end of the story. The most developed is Jules and his hockey career. We spend the most time with him on the ice and learn about his traumatic and abusive childhood. Jules is afraid to come out and, since he has no one to come out for, it’s not a pressing point. However, when the book opens, the team management and some teammates make his life difficult. We are told that Sterling is a famous musician and he comes to Las Vegas for a two-year residency and although he’s wealthy and has a manager, I never got the feeling of who Sterling was either in his personal or professional life.

ARC REVIEW

Jules and Sterling are an HEA love story with all the gut wrenching heartbreak one could withstand in a book.

From a major and unexpected life change to a missed chance at connecting followed by resentment, this is the second chance HEA that perfectly brings love to you.

Without giving too much away, this book will have you pulled in from the beginning and will keep you turning the pages for more.

Also, the spice is just right.

"No one ever chose me." - Jules

"I just know Jules will deconstruct everything about me and then build me back up." - Sterling

I really loved the beginning of the book, when Sterling explained to Jules why he didn't text him, that made me understand what happened in the past 2 years and I'm glad Jules didn't accept his apology right away, that he thought about his own feelings too.

The communication wasn't great, they both were too much in their heads and didn't talk about what they were thinking about, I hoped they could learn that the further they got into the relationship but they kept getting stuck in the same behavior. It took a long time to change that behavior but I also think that it has to do a lot with their own struggles and what they think about themselves. I really loved the little family that they created and the moments they spent together. They can help each other heal and grow, they can do that together.

There were a few things that the characters said that stayed unanswered, is there a story behind those thinks or not, for example

- Why does Jules feel like he's too much? Did somebody say that to him or does HE think that of himself. I feel like they could have talked about that.

- Why does Sterling not like it that Jules calls him by his first name but is okay with it if another person do that?

"We can be grief buddies." - Jamie

I'm glad that Jules has someone that he can talk to about someone that he lost and that they can share that grief together.

I'm glad that all the team members have Gab in their lives. She really is their best friend, mother figure and boss. Even if the team members didn't grow up in a loving household there is always Gab that they can talk to!

I’ve really enjoyed the author’s Fan Service series, so I was super excited to see this new book is about hockey- which is my absolute obsession. Jules’s struggle is so perfectly depicted in the early chapters. You can really feel his loneliness and pain in having to choose between living authentically and openly or playing the game he loves for an organization he knows would never accept him. Jules and Sterling had a beautiful time together at club Provoke, but life got in the way and pulled Sterling away. Poor Jules has not gotten over it, his pain is still quite raw. It’s all so well executed and really makes the stakes feel high when Sterling returns to Vegas, looking to win Jules back. I loved these two together, they have chemistry for days but tons to work through before they get a chance at a happy ending. I absolutely loved how the author addressed the Daddy side of the story, I don’t run into this very often in hockey romance but it’s a perfect addition. I like my hockey romances to actually have hockey in them and this one does an excellent job creating a realistic NHL vibe. The world building adds so much to Jules and Sterling story. The author also does a wonderful job exploring the challenges professional sports has with diversity and inclusivity. This was pretty perfect to me, I really loved it from page one. Cannot wait first the next book!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Ok....it's me not necessarily the book. This book came after 3 back to back 5⭐️ reads. It was ok but I didn't love love it.

Some aspects I absolutely adored, Jules and Ava together, how much Sterling truly adored Jules but I think my favorite was the incorporation of Jamie into their family.

Gab and Tristan were perfect in their cameos and I just love that Hinsel keeps these us within the same universe so I can see my favs over and over!

The biggest reason is-yea I know daddy kink isn't my favorite but I can like it....for me it's when there are issues with their actual dads being a-holes and then having a daddy kink and that's what this one was for me, why it didn't hit the mark. I loved their love story and loved their protectiveness of each other. They were open and vulnerable with each other and all the cuddling! I'm here for that!!

Right Person, Wrong Time

This was very much the case of right person, wrong time.

This was a sweet little romance between a closeted hockey player & rockstar. These guys meet in a kinkster club (Daddy & Boy) and their chemistry is electric from the start. Unfortunately, life gets in the way, and our Daddy ghosts his boy before showing up at his doorstep 2 years later. Jules is not too keen on the idea of forgiveness, he’s got a history of loneliness & is slow to trust.

I loved watching these two guys stumble their way to their HEA. And stumble they did. For both of these men, this is their first relationship ever, so they had to learn how to navigate all the basics, plus dealing with being celebrities.

I am excited to read more from this world & we even had a cameo from the previous series.

Ohhhhhhh this book!! I fell in love with this book from page one. This gave me all the feels. My heart broke, I cried, I laughed and I cheered.
Jules and Sterling are amazing, well written characters. Reading this I felt like they were telling me their story face to face.
They were such different people but brought everything to the story.
The other characters were told in a way that they didn't take away from the man MCs, everything pieced together with such precision, woven amazingly.
The steamy scenes were amazing!! I love me a Daddy kink and it didn't come off as creepy and unsettling.
I am not a big, big fan of insta love stories amd you get that vibe from this but, honestly it didn't bother me as much.
You will love this book, you will cheer with Jules and Sterling and be mad that it ends. Will definitely reread this and recommend to everyone.

I'll admit, sports romance--hockey in particular--is not usually my cup of tea. And this book is heavy on the hockey plot.

It took me a bit to get into the story and I'm glad I stuck it out. This book is about a closeted rockstar Daddy and his closeted hockey star boy.

There was some confusion about the Rose character as the author alluded to something happening with her but it took a while to actually come out and say what we were all supposed to assume.

Sometimes the pacing was too slow but the instant chemistry between Jules and Sterling was undeniable and kept me reading.

I'm not quite sure what to think about how things ended up between them and Jamie...

In the end, it's probably more of a 3.5 star book, but I enjoyed it enough to round up to 4.

This went well for most of the story except for the last 5% which threw me out on a loop. I already felt Jamie living them is so odd for most of the story and towards the end, Jamie expresses her wish to have more kids and Sterling is like, Oh yeah, lets have more kids. WTF! Even more weird is when she says she wants Jules to be biological father. It almost felt like a MFM story rather than a MM story. Author just spoiled it for me with this angle. what the hell was author thinking making story sound like this?

And even epilogue, Sterling and Jules make more plans to have Jamie stay with them by expanding their home to build more rooms for her use. Wont she find a partner for herself? Is she going to live them forever and single? It all ended up being too weird for me :(

DNF

The intensity of emotion between guys who are basically just hookups is outrageous. Like they had a ONS, MC2 promises to text MC1 when he’s next in town and doesn’t and since they’re both public figures MC1 sees that he got “ghosted” if you can even call it that and is devastated for two years????? I don’t care that he was your dream Daddy and you felt a connection, you knew him for 12 hours and some of that was spent banging.

Then everyone acting like MC1 is an asshole for leaving MC2 at the hospital with his daughter after she had an allergic reaction like???? He’s not family or even a boyfriend, they’ve spent days together (largely banging), and he has a job to do???

Neither of the needed to grovel they just needed to communicate. V annoying tbh.

Hockey Daddy

When I started this book, first of a series, I had some immediate trepidation: another rock star - hockey story and it involves Daddy role-playing. The latter is usually a no-go for me, but I decided to give it a try.
Fortunately, the daddy-boy narrative is kept mostly light, the heat middling, and the angst moderate. Meyer handles the dual crises tastefully with a surprising twist. While the action is centered in Las Vegas, Sin City never overwhelmed the clever tale.

if wishes were fishes, we’d all swim in riches

Jules is a hockey god, hockey has been his sole devotion. Sterling is a rockstar, touring the world, his fame owns him.

The 2 year radio silence doesn’t make sense, once you get past that faux pas, this is a phenomenal read, great character depth, surprisingly good communication, a little Angel, and supportive friends and teammates.

A chance encounter, missed cues, few bad decisions, wounded pride, old insecurities, 20 year age gap, and a second chance to make it right.

Love

Sterling and Jules were so good together. Their relationship problems were realistic in the sense that not everything is going to sunshine and perfection. You need that person that’s going to stand beside you and weather whatever comes your way. Loved their relationship dynamic and the support they had from everyone else in their life. First read by this author and I enjoyed it

I need to read Bear’s book ASAP after that bonus chapter! Hinsel has this magical ability to leave me impatiently waiting for more after each book and I’m not angry about it.

I don’t love how quickly Jules and Sterling fell for each other but learning more of their past through the book definitely helps explain why they were both so desperate to hold on to any good thing that came into their lives, especially Jules.

Sterling is the perfect man for Jules and he knows it, I loved seeing him grovel and remain adamant that he and Jules should be together regardless of what Sterling needed to do to prove that. His “sister” and daughter added a great deal to the overall story and they made for such a great family unit for Jules to be added into.

Jules definitely took some convincing to get comfortable and confident in his relationship with Sterling, but I really loved both men doing their best to prove themselves to each other. Jules is desperate for a family and having him find one by the end of this book is touching.

After reading Gradually then Suddenly last year I had high expectations for this full novel and I’m glad I enjoyed it as much as I did. I’m so excited to continue this series and cannot wait for Tell me Lies!

it’s ok

I am not familiar with this author so when I saw good reviews I thought I would check it out. It’s ok. My biggest issue is how often these two men cry. It seemed like it was every other page. With that there was too many details that I didn’t need to know. I guess it’s just not for me.

They worked together to work out their problems. I appreciate that. The smexy was yummy, and I love the found family.

4.5.... Angst People

This was my first read by this author and I saw through all the angst, drama, just for the genuine love this book has. This hits all the sweet spots for me in a second chance romance between Jules a star hockey player, and Sterling, a rock star.
