Shiori and Knox have been at each other’s throats pretty much since they met. They’re both helping run Shiori’s brother’s (Ronin) martial arts business while he’s away on a honeymoon/sabbatical. Knox is in charge at work, getting to call the shots for the first time ever and he starts to have doubts about his place at Ronin’s; if he’s really needed and where he fits in. His personal life also gets turned upside down, again by Shirori, when they see each other at club where Shiori can live her Domme lifestyle and Knox is a bit of a ‘jack of all trades’ at the club, providing pain when he’s requested to be a third, or he’s working, bartending and security. What he never expected when he sees Shiori as a Domme is his gut-instinct reaction to submit to her. It’s the start of a new relationship for them as two people finding themselves in roles and having desires they never considered.

I loved this story. It felt like a fresh story and not something I’ve read much of, the heroine being a Domme to her hero who’s submissive to her. It was an interesting take and dynamic to see play out on page. Knox is as alpha as they come and he struggles a lot with the idea of submitting to Shiori in the bedroom. On the one hand, it goes against everything male and in charge he thought he was and wanted. But on the other, he starts to realize that by submitting to Shiori, he’s giving her pleasure that no one else can or will and that’s ultimately what he wants, to be hers, to know her better than anyone else and to give her everything she could ever want.

Shiori also struggles with this new relationship as she’s never had a longterm relationship with a submissive. After being in a bad marriage, she found herself when she started to learn about being a Domme and it’s a way for her to finally get what she needs and wants in the bedroom, something that never happened during her marriage. But in one of the more emotional scenes of the book, we learn exactly why Shiori craves the Domme role and it’s both heartbreaking yet sweet seeing how Knox reacts to it. I found their dynamic to be captivating, seeing this romance develop and how they worked through all the bumps that got in their way.

One of the things that really kept me interested and not skimming through some scenes (as I’m apt to do in erotic stories that turn into just sex-sex-sex-story-sex) was while Shiori and Knox are into BDSM it never went overboard. For me, a little goes a long way in these books and Unraveled hit the mark just right. There’s no threesome, there’s very little, if any, play at the club or in public, there are very few pain scenes. It’s really about Shiori calling the shots in the bedroom, telling Knox what to do or what he can’t do and it’s all about them. Nothing from the outside gets in the way and I loved that aspect of this story.

Just to make things even more complicated is their professional, working relationship. It doesn’t go smoothly. While Shiori’s in charge in the bedroom, that’s the only place their relationship turns into D/s, so Knox gets to call some of his own shots, be it at work or when he takes her out on dates. I liked that give and take and it kept the story and their relationship from feeling too one sided.

To me, books in this genre tend to start to read the same after awhile. It can end up being more about how many sex scenes can be crammed into a book, instead of creating a solid, unique story to go with it. Unraveled hits all the right notes from start to end. I loved the different dynamic Shiori and Knox have with their relationship and seeing them both struggle and come to terms with it. I found them to be interesting characters that kept my attention. The sex scenes were intense but I never thought they overpowered the main storyline of their relationship. Lorelei James hit a homerun with this book, it’s the best so far in this young series and I’m excited to see what James brings us next.

I should have a disclaimer that I have always preferred my alpha heroes to be the Dominant in my romances because I struggle to identify with their feminine counterparts, but Unraveled really worked for me. I'm a big fan of Lorelei James' Rough Riders series, Blacktop cowboy series so like everything she writes it is a guarantee I will gobble them up like chocolate.

In books 1 and 2 (Bound and Unwound) I found Shiori quite cold so I was a little worried I wouldn't like her in Unraveled. I'm pleased to say that once I got into her head, I loved reading about her insecurities and how she wanted to forge her own relationship with her submissive, despite advice to the contrary. Knox is completely alpha; strong, kind and caring when it comes to his woman. I loved that Shiori embraced that and didn't try to bend him to her will. In a way Unraveled is probably one of the best Domme/submissive romances I have read. Shiori and Knox's relationship had the type of power exchange that appealed to me, and perhaps explained how such an alpha guy could be a sexual submissive better than anything I have read before. Both characters make mistakes but work hard to fix them - there was no unnecessary drama and this made the story seem really believable.

After book 2 in the Mastered series being a little bit of a let down, I am really pleased that book 3 was awesome. I'm looking forward to reading Molly and Deacon's story soon.

UNRAVELED provides an interesting take on how a strong willed and otherwise fairly dominant man can also be submissive to the right Domme. Although Shiori proves to be a dominant and self assured woman she does not have it all. Being a part of a very wealthy family brings with it it's own set of problems and insecurities. After a bad and loveless marriage Shiori discovers a way to be in control as well as sexually fulfilled by becoming Mistress B. By embracing and expressing herself as a Domme Shiori not only finds fulfillment for herself, but she feels that she provides a positive outlet for the submissives that she plays with. However, Shiori doesn't take on long term submissives and she is not looking for a long term commitment. That is until she begins a tentative relationship with Knox. Although she sees in Knox a submissive streak that many, including Knox, did not recognize she doesn't try to force him to be what he himself isn't ready to embrace. I LOVED that James made Shiori that way. Instead of trying to brow beat Knox, Shiori simply explains what she sees in him, why she feels that he could possibly embrace relinquishing control to her sexually, and allows Knox to come to terms with it at his own pace and in his own way.

Knox doesn't want to see the submissive traits in himself that he knows deep down inside are there. Knox has perfected the hard nosed, physically dominating, and aggressive persona that has served him so well in the world of martial arts. Knox can't quite grasp right away how a man so in control and dominant outside of the bedroom, who also enjoys some control in the bedroom, can also enjoy giving total control over to someone else. By being open to Shiori and her gentle and gradual exposure to submission Knox is able to let go. Knox discovers that submitting and wanting to please Shiori first comes with an incredible freedom and greater pleasure than he could have ever imagined before. Knox learns the pleasure and even peace that can be had when he is able to trust someone else enough to take control and take care of his needs.

UNRAVELED is a wonderfully erotic and sometimes tempestuous journey of two people learning to trust each other in many different and difficult ways. If you are looking for a D/s romance that feels more like the telling of a realistic relationship with the added twist of a Domme being in charge UNRAVELED is a refreshing break from the typical erotic BDSM story. Well written, emotionally engaging and satisfying to the end UNRAVELED didn't disappoint.

Unfortunately, this one missed the mark for me very much which is sad because I very much love Lorelei. I listened to this in audio format and would advise that this one be read. The male narrator for Unraveled is different from the one used in Bound and Unwound and he massacred Knox's part and even Deacon's. Beyond that, the story felt as if it were lacking...at least to me. Potentially exacerbated by the fact that It went rather long, and could have been condensed in several spots. I suppose I was expecting ... more ... from the story. I don't care for males as the submissive stories so that could explain by malcontent. But I don't think that's all it is. Knox, as a character, came of lacking as far as personality. I loved him in the other books but neither liked or disliked him in this one, same for Shiori. They were a bit lack luster. Although kinky, the lifelessness lead to a similar overall vibe for the story.

A great steamy read of a dominant with a male submissive. Not every day we see a strong man as a submissive. I love this series even more. I'm shocked is not that popular because martial arts is not a common background in a story line. Usually we see a bdsm book involve a sport athlete or a billionaire its great to see something new. When you read this book it will make you want to be tied up or whipped by Knox. I couldn't drop this book down its a must read for all my erotic lovers.

I'll freely admit it...female dommes are not my favourite topic to read about. Purely a personal preference...I just like male doms/female subs. I was, however, willing to trust the topic to Lorelei James and give this book a shot. I'm happy to say she's put her unique spin on the story and did not disappoint me.

Shiori and Knox have butted heads since they met. We could see this coming...and it was pretty amazing to watch. I could feel the chemistry between these two, and it sizzled. It was hard to imagine how Knox could be a sexual submissive while retaining all that alpha male we've seen...but Ms. James has made it believable. Shiori has always come off as a cold bitch, but we are shown a whole different side of her here. Warm, compassionate and even vulnerable. I loved how they truly behaved as adults in the face of conflict...eventually. These are mature characters and I expect mature behavior from them.

I have only a small complaint with this book. It went on a little longer than I thought it needed to, and for me much of the excess length was in the sex scenes. I thought we could have been shown what was necessary in just a few less, and the book would have lost the "draggy" feel I thought it had at times. As I said, small complaint, and it didn't affect the story overall.

This was a solid 4 star read for me.

I had a hard time with this one. Part of it was I didn't really buy into the romance between Shiori and Knox, even when things were good between them it seemed off. I also feel bad because I seem to have a double standard, I didn't really like the D/s relationship in this one, with Shiori being the Domme and Knox being the submissive. I had a hard time seeing Knox as a submissive as he was much like the other guys in the series, an alpha male. The two things didn't connect in my head.

Another issue I had with this one was Ronin and how he was when he came back. He was like a bull in a china shop making changes. Yes the dojo was his, but the way he went about making those changes seemed to piss off those that had been there for him.

Blackraven's Review:

POWERFUL! INSPIRING! LOVING! Those are the three words that I would choose to describe UNRAVELED by Lorelei James. Ms. James has penned an amazing story of how an alpha male can fulfill his desires to submit to a strong, powerful, loving woman while maintaining his dignity, manhood, and alpha male status. Moreover, UNRAVELED beautifully displays the give and take relationship between a Domme and a sub. Being a witness to Knox and Shiori's inner struggles both as individuals and as a couple while they learned to communicate, compromise, and build a relationship was inspiring. Unraveled can be read without having read the previous books in The Mastered series. But I highly recommending reading them all.

Unraveled is my first Domme/sub read. I wasn’t sure what to expect going in. I kind of had the same mind-set on males being subs as Knox did. Knox has a hard time coming to terms that he is a sub (at least in the bedroom) underneath his alpha outside. While listening to Unraveled I felt like I really went on Knox’s journey with him. My stereotypes were put aside as I saw the alpha male fall into the role of a submissive.

Another stereotype is about Domme’s being ball busting, whip carrying, bitches that want men to lick their boots. That’s not what Shiori is all about. She just needs to be in control in the bedroom. And a large part of that comes from a failed marriage and then from her family life. Shiori craves human contact, touch to be more exact. And she wants it from Knox.

One part of the book really hit me and made me think, Wow, it doesn’t matter what your genre is. We all need something from our partners and feel lacking at times.

“Why are you staring at me, Nushi?”

“Because you are so very nice to look at.”

“Am I just a toy to you?” he asked softly. “Take me out and play with me when it suits you, and the rest of the time I’m shelved someplace where I can be admired but not touched?”

She’d never credited him with so much insight. “Have I made you feel that way?”

“Not yet. But I do worry that it’s in my future.”

That scene had me wanting to hold Knox and make it all better for him. I’ve read other books where the female was the sub and the male the Dom. And I thought felt bad for the women in those moments where they felt the way Knox did but for some reasoning seeing a big, alpha guy have the same thoughts and feelings had me wanting to cry for him.

Shiori and Knox had their issues to work through and it was an emotional ride. I found myself connecting with both characters. Their happiness was mine, their heartbreak was mine. I really love Lorelei James’ writing. She pulls me in with her characters and leaves me thinking about them long after I finish the book.

I loved Unraveled and I can’t wait to see what Deacon and Molly’s story brings in Caged. Luckily I only have to wait until July to see.

Narration

Two reasons I was super excited to start this one because I’ve loved the other audio books in the series. And because there’s two new narrators for this book since it’s a new couple.

However I was sadden to hear the female voice of a narrator. Why? Because I’ve listened to her under another name and she’s not one of my favorite narrators. Claire Kilpatrick reads too fast and she sound a bit like a robotic to me. Tricked by a pseudonym. How ever Lorelei James’ writing made it all ok. I got so wrapped up in the story and the characters that my less than enthusiasm over the female narrator was soon a thing of the past.

Hunter Millbrook is new to me as a narrator. I’m not sure if he narrates under another name or not. It took me a few chapters to be won over by his narration of Knox but I finally settled into his voice and enjoy his performance of Knox’s POV.

I’m assuming that the next book, Caged will have a different set of narrators because it’s about yet another couple. If that is the case I hope that they get a narrator(s) that do an outstanding Southern accent since Deacon is from Texas.

Unraveled by Lorelei James is book #3 of the Mastered Series and should go down as one if not THE best female Dom books out there. It's a hard subject to tackle because for most when you think sub, you think subservient, docile, passive, willing to obey when commanded kind of person and those aren't usually the kind of men I want to read about and to hear others, they feel the same way, but Lorelei took that challenge and rose to the occasion.

When we first met Ronin's sister Shiori (our heroine) in the first book BOUND, one would think wow, what a bitch, and I guess she could be considered that. She's tough, protective, successful, and likes to be in control. She's definitely used to being the HBIC. I also had her pegged as a Domme. Though honestly I had this gut feeling about her, even though on the surface she comes across as hard-ass like her brother, there was that little bit of vulnerability and maybe even insecurity beneath all that toughness and it made me look at her differently once we delved deeper into her character. By the end, I was relieved to have been right because she was worth getting to know. She did have a softer loving side that showed but also through Knox's commitment/love she -- shined. From the start she and Knox had that spark. Usually arguing about the dojo or anything in general because they both pushed each other's buttons (on purpose), but there was always sexual tension there as well. It made for some downright hot and sexy scenes which we fans NEED like our next breath. If you haven't read one of the Lorelei James's sex scenes you just don't know what you are missing. THE.BEST!

After being anxious to see how Lorelei would write a male sub without making him seem weak I was left with NO doubt Knox is ALPHA to the core. Not only ALPHA, but sexy as hell ALPHA. The way their relationship was written was PERFECT. For me it clicked and made total sense.

There's so much to dig about this book. For one, it's long as hell which is a plus when you're enjoying the story and the characters. Lorelei stayed true to the characters and made me love them more. I'm enjoying the changing dynamics at the dojo and all the new people being brought in. Does this mean there are more stories to come? I hope to hell so. I admire Lorelei for stepping out, trying something different, almost taboo, putting her flair into it, and as always giving it her all. It's one of my top books so far this year and I hope it's well received by all of those newbies to her and the ones who doubted the male sub topic.

Happy Reading!

Shiori Hirano quit the family job after realizing she wanted something else. Working at her brother's gym has helped her find new purpose in her life. She is helping make decisions to improve it. When Ronin goes on his honeymoon, she is left to deal with Knox by herself. Anytime they are around each other they butt heads.

"Word is I’m a really great guy.”

She smiled as he’d hoped she would. “Only in your dreams, Ob‑Knox‑ ious.”

Lately, there is a new tension between them. It calls to her. You see Shiori is also a Domme, and she likes to be called Mistress by her submissive. No one knows this side of her but she very much will like Knox to get with the program.

Knox Lofgren is left in charge of the gym. He is an alpha at work. To his surprise he soon discovers that Shiori can be his dominant. He is shocked to learn he's a submissive. Once the relationship begins, he starts wondering what will happen when Shiori leaves for her home in Japan again.

This is my first female dominant and male submissive book.
It was strange for me to read it and at times I had some issues with their relationship. I'm so used to my guys being alpha but I couldn't skip this one.
I like both characters. I like that their lives outside the bedroom were completely opposite. Knox was still very much in charge. The last 20% of the book was excellent.
The Mastered series is very well written. I like how the world is getting new intriguing characters. I'm always wondering if they are getting a book too.

Caged is next and I already know I'm going to love it.

I know everyone is completely in love with Ronin, and yes I love him too. But I was ready for a change and beyond excited to be reading about Knox. Sexy, alpha goodness Knox. I was so intrigued about how Ms. James would handle his relationship with Shiori, since we’ve known she likes to play on the dominant side. And I’m here to tell you that Lorelei James ROCKED it!

UNRAVELED is without a doubt my absolute favorite in The Mastered Series…Knox it’s where it’s at! I love that man. He’s such a powerful, alpha male and he gives himself completely to Shiori. He cares for her. He wants to protect her. Deacon and all the others will have a hard time taking my Knox’s place.

Chemistry sizzles on and off the sheets between these two. From their work performance to the bedroom (or other places). The constant push and pull for control makes for a fun book because Shiori and Knox definitely kept me on my toes. Kept me wanting more.

The emotional struggles they both had to overcome were the perfect touch to add substantial obstacles in their path to an HEA.

I know some people may be concerned about the fact that the hero is in the submissive position, but don’t let this fool you. Knox is all alpha, all male, and everything we crave to read about. His submission just gives him more power. Lorelei James has managed to go into the world of BDSM in a new way, a new angle than what most authors tend to explore. And it comes across really beautiful. The connection between the characters in these moments goes beyond sex and Ms. James transfers that emotion to the reader.

I will stay here basking in the afterglow of reading this book. And then a little while later I’ll start getting excited about the next books. I can’t wait for Deacon’s book! Bring it on!

Angeline's review posted on Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

When I first read the blurb for UNRAVELED: The Mastered Series, Book 3, I thought it would be interesting to see how Miss James writes a male sub. I have not read many of them that I have enjoyed. No author has made me feel like I understand the dynamic. That was until I read Unraveled.
Knox is a drool worthy alpha male who finds himself in disbelief that he has submissive tendencies. This does not mean he is weak. There is nothing weak about Knox. Trust me. Nothing.

Shiori is a hard woman who is trying to find herself in America. She and Knox constantly argue and pick at each other. Who would’ve thought that the passion between them would change into something so delicious?

Knox and Shiori are combustible, inside and outside of the bedroom. To read such amazingly, hot sex scenes to some of the sweetest, most loving moments, is why I love Lorelei’s writing. She wrote such a perfect balance for them.
I was surprised at Shiori’s use of the English language. While Japanese is her first language and I understand she speaks English fluently, there were a few times her use of slang was too perfectly American. However, without these times, the banter between her and Knox wouldn’t have been so great.

We briefly see Ronin and Amery. I always love to catch up with other characters. I was a little disappointed in how Ronin handled his return to the States after their 3 months away. For him being a high-ranking martial arts master, he was not respectful like I would think he would be. I do still love him, though.

It takes a strong man to love a strong woman. That is Knox and Shiori. They found their other half in each other.

I’m looking forward to Deacon and Molly’s story. I loved getting to know Deacon more in this story.

Unraveled is by far one of the sexiest books I have read in a long time. It is meant to be savored. It’s a beautiful love story that makes complete sense.

Warning : This may or may not contain spoilers!

This book started of great for me but then fell flat, i have read some good femdom books and this wasn't one of them i never really connected with either character on that aspect and while the build up of a d/s relationship was fascinating in the beginning the rest was crap honestly i felt cheated the author spent a great deal of time "telling" us who they were rather than "showing" us in which she failed terribly it felt like her herself didn't want knox to become a sub no wonder why most people don't connect with femdom books 90% of them are verrryyy badly written (if the domme is not some cold b**** with an abusive childhood she's a switch or all the above) see a pattern here? very frustrating i've read too many maledom books (yes where the dom's abusive stalker behavior is okay) and not enough of these that it makes me made mad this book made me mad i would've rather have the author categorize them as a vanilla couple curious about their kinky side than this d/s tit for tat play these two had going on (meaning whenever the girl dominated the guy returned the favor) like i said nothing wrong as long as they stop making it seem like it's a d/s relationship... btw she is such a terrible domme i really ddnt see that coming .....so for all the crazy femdom fans out there dont bother reading this book or you will end up like me (pissed as hell)

All in all i liked the sense of humour i'm curious about master Merek's story now if he gets his own book and domme that would be quite an interesting plot line.

Third in the Mastered erotic romance series based in Denver and revolving around Black Arts dojo. The couple focus is on Shiori Hirano and Knox Lofgren.

My Take
I do enjoy the inside look we get at running a martial arts studio with the conflicts and concerns they have. One of the minor conflicts is why Black Arts isn't doing well with their MMA fighters.

I have to say I was uncomfortable with Knox and Shiori's explorations. I guess Knox isn't the only one who doesn't see a man as a submissive. Other than that, I like the characters, and I do enjoy their interaction. Knox's sisters are a crack-up.

In Unraveled the focus begins with the animosity between Shiori and Knox. It's pretty funny later on when they realize that animosity is part of the attraction. In the meantime, the incident Shiori witnesses Knox handle with Abby and Addy is too funny — and opens Shiori's eyes. Then there's the wheeling and dealing for how their relationship will work. It's a rare thing for the man to be the pushy one in terms of dating, lol.

There is a too-brief scene in which Max gets his comeuppance, *more laughter*. Of course, he's also courting danger, moving in on Shiori. More danger pops up when Shiori does humiliate Knox. A promise she broke. And, oh mama, does Deacon ever lash out at her! He makes some excellent points.

It does make sense why Shiori goes to Twisted in disguise. The club also provides James with opportunities to educate Knox (and the reader) about bondage and submission in a different way. It seems that Master Dan also has some advice for Knox.

Oh, that was just nasty. We get background information, at last, on how Shiori got played into introducing Ronin to Naomi. Seems she isn't the only Okada to screw up. And it's enough to make you want to cry when you learn what it is that Shiori really craves. Knox has his own childhood memories of how hard his mom struggled.

I don't understand how Master Daichi releasing Ronin as a student affects Black Arts dojo? It does cause Knox to have some really stupid reactions which leads to some dumb moves on Shiori's part. Talk about annoying tropes! And yet another one (it was kinda sweet, too) is Shiori's confession to her mother.

The underlying message in Unraveled is of a male learning he's submissive, and how Shiori slowly leads him in his discovery. Yes, slowly, very slowly, because Knox is fighting every step of the way.
"…most men weren't strong enough to submit."
The Story
It's an attraction Knox is fighting…Ronin is his friend, boss, and mentor…and Shiori is Ronin's sister! It does "help" that, that feisty little thing's skills are better than his…

The Characters
Shiori Hirano, a.k.a., She-Cat or Shitake…or Mistress B, is Ronin's sister who has taken a sort-of leave-of-absence from Okada Foods, the family conglomerate, to work at Black Arts dojo. Shin Hirano is her ex-husband. And, oh boy, what a story that one is! Jenko had been her married bodyguard in Japan. Tammy is Shiori and Ronin's mother. Nureki Okada is their grandfather. Nuri is a very new newcomer.

Knox "Ob-Knox-ious" Lofgren is Shihan and Ronin's second-in-command as well as the dojo's general manager (Shiori calls him Godan because she is one belt higher). He also has an interesting, um, side-job. Vivie and Zara are his much-younger sisters who live in Golden with his mom, Lisa, and stepfather, Rick Christensen.

Black Arts dojo is…
…owned by Ronin Black, a bakushi master, who is currently honeymooning in Japan with his new wife, Amery. Deacon "Con Man" McConnell is Yondan and Ronin's third-in-command; he actively tries to get students to quit. Sandan Zach, Ito Tohora, Jon, Terrel, Tasha, and Chelle all work there as well. Katie Pettigrew Gardiner is doing well as promotional manager for the newly merged Black and Blue Promotions, a result of the merger with ABC, Alvares "Blue" Curacao's Brazilian jujitsu dojo. Blue has his own set of programs. Sophia "Fee" Curacao is his sister. Gil and Fisher (he's training for MMA fights as well as running his construction business) are instructors for Blue's side.

Former Black Arts instructors included…
Beck Leeds, Gunnar Whatley, Brody Pearson, and Langston Reed.

Students at Black Arts include…
Jillian, Addy and Abby (twins with issues), Dylan, and Radley and Lotte who are useless. Ivan Stanislovsky, Max's son, is working hard, training as an MMA fighter. Max himself is one of the richest men in Denver, and all on the down-and-down! Molly Calloway (she works for Amery at Hardwick Designs) survived an attack and has taken classes at Black Arts; she's currently taking kickboxing classes from Fisher. Presley is one of Molly's co-workers.

Maddox Byerly is Gil's brother-in-law who is desperate to get out of his marriage with the psycho Roxanna and his job as an MMA coach with Tieg, Garvey, Linson.

Steve Atwood runs another martial arts club. Mia is one of his fighters, a real nasty bitch. And I do mean "nasty"!

Twisted is…
…owned by Merrick McBride (Lizette introduced him to BDSM). Greg is one of the bartenders who works there along with Delilah and Tita. Justin, Vic, and Dex are submissives. Masters Rand, Dan, and Mike are Doms; Master V is a sadist. Jake and Ginny; Bill and Joe; Master Kirk with his sub, Patsy; Mistress Annabelle with her sub, Leanne; Vanessa who is no longer with Master Jack; Ridge; and, Bobby Sue are also members.

Diesel is a bar the Black Arts instructors frequent. Mistress Keiko owned the sex club Shiori first went to. Muja is Kieko's current submissive. Errol works at a local gym. Doctors Ballard and Barr both have occasion to treat Shiori. Kirsten is a nurse. Naomi is Ronin's really nasty ex-wife. Master Kenji, a protégé of Master Daichi, will become Ronin's new trainer. Maggie Arnold runs the Okada branch in Seattle. She's also Beck Leeds' mother. Jeff Jenkins is with Executive Luxury Associates who handles the penthouse lease. Liberty Masterson ( Hillbilly Rockstar , (Blacktop Cowboys, 6)) turns up with possibilities with GSC; Devin McClain is her husband.

Nushi means master, lover, in Japanese.

The Cover and Title

I like this series very well so far. I like how Shiori and Knox are left in charge of the dojo, and how they will have to work together to run it. I like how Shiori and Knox begin to work out their differences, and how they become involved after running into each other at a club. I like how Shiori doesn’t push Knox into the relationship, and how Knox is eager for the relationship. I hate how they get in a fight and how they stay away from each other for a while. I like that they stop fighting, and how they get back together and end up getting married.

I hate to DNF a book but this one just wasn’t working for me. I just didn’t feel the attraction between the two main characters. Also, it comes out that Knox is a submissive which I’m not a fan of.

I will move on to book 4 (Molly & Deacon).

I love this series and I was more than happy to be returning to this series sooner than I thought. In the third book we are back at the dojo as we find out what exactly happened when Ronin and Amery are away ( see the book before this to see what happens with them while they are in Japan).
Well things are heating up between Knox and Ronin’s sister Shiori who got a glimpse of butting heads over ranks in the previous books when she arrived in town. She has made her mistakes and made up for them. Now is her time to relax and discover herself free from her grandfather’s influence but Knox can’t help interfering. This book explores that attraction keeping in with the themes from the previous books. If you though that Ronin skills were sensual as hell. Well Shiori takes to another level with own tendencies as domme.
Now I must admit I haven’t read any fem dom books despite some of my favourite authors writing them. However I decide to take a chance finally with this book as I had knew I had to read this book because it was Knox and Shiori’s story. These two rub each other the wrong way from the first time they met. So I was curious what would led to Knox becoming her submissive when I read the blurb and delved into the book.
After reading this book, I must say don’t mistake Knox for a weak male as he far from that. I finally get what another author was saying about her particular male. Sub. Knox is alpha male there isn’t any mistake as you can see it clearly. Submitting doesn’t make him any weaker or any less of a man. It hard to describe, you need to read this book for your self to understand this decision he made and the journey he took to come to this realisation. As the author does the amazing job of describing and storytelling this part of this story as Knox doesn’t only have this issue to deal with.

That aside, the book is like any other book in this series, so far with hot sexy scenes between the couple as they work out the perfect balance for their relationship with these issues going on with Knox and Shiori wanting to find her own place in the world.
With this book tying up what exactly happened and giving us the missing piece of what happened when was Ronin away then bring into the present with the return of the duo. I can’t wait to read the next story in the series as brings Molly back into the picture and lets us discover more of Deacon who was more of silent figure in the series until this book.
The author has changed my preconceptions about fem doms and subs and I look forward to see which direction she takes the next book. This series is becoming a favourite of mine for a number of different reasons. This book didn’t disappoint and I’m glad the author wrote this book

4.5 stars!

I can't believe I'm saying this because I love Ronin Black, but this is now my favorite book of the series. Knox and Shiori's story had the perfect mix of tension and fun, sexy banter. It made for a story that was hard to put down.

With Sensei Black out of the country for a few months (same time period as Schooled), Knox and Shiori are forced to work together. Something that's proved to be difficult for them in past. There's always been an extreme competitiveness and an insane amount of tension between them. Everyone around them can see it. It all comes to a head when Knox finds out that Shiori is a Domme. Any thoughts he might of had about a one-night-stand are out the window.

Shiori is a strong, independent woman that happens to outrank him at the dojo. So it's a little intimidating and hard for him to come to the realization that he just might be a submissive. He fears being humiliated and looking weak. That's not what she has in mind at all. It was a lot of fun watching them explore their relationship both inside and outside the bedroom.

"You might outrank me, but I promise I won't follow the rules. I won't fight fair when I'm fighting for the best thing that's ever happened to me."

I went into the Knox and Shiori's story not really sure what to expect. I was actually thinking I might not like it. I've read a few book with submissive men in the past and those men came off as weak to me. Something about Knox and the explanations throughout this book changed my entire outlook on submissive men. Knox was anything but weak in my eyes. He was such an alpha outside of the bedroom and his submissiveness in the bedroom was ultimately about pleasing Shiori, which made his surrender sweet in my eyes. They had such tender and loving moments together. Something I hadn't equated with a Domme/submissive relationship before.

"I've never craved a woman like I do you."

The Black Arts aspect of the story is so different from anything that I've read before and it's refreshing. I also love the family dynamics between all the friends and coworkers. I'm really looking forward to Caged, especially after getting a little bit more of Deacon's story in this book.

One of the best things that can happen in an ongoing series is when the author can redeem a mostly unlikeable character from an earlier book as the winning love interest in a following book. In UNRAVELED, Lorelei James has taken Ronin Black’s sister Shiori Hirano, a woman I initially disliked and only begrudgingly came around to liking, and made her the best heroine yet in the MASTERED series.

Now that Ronin is off on a trip to Japan to continue his martial arts training and spend time alone with his new wife Amery, his Black Arts dojo is temporarily in the hands of his sister Shiori and his right hand man Knox Lofgren. On the surface, this combination seems like a disaster in the making, since all Shiori and Knox ever seem to do is fight for domination. Yet there’s a deeper attraction under all the sparring, and when Shiori discovers Knox’s true nature, it’s all she can do to keep from immediately claiming him for good. Knox wants to be the man that Shiori believes he is, but it will take more than irresistible sexual desire to help them get past all the obstacles between them and happiness, not the least of which will be Ronin’s reaction to all that’s happened in his prolonged absence.

The ongoing transformation of Ronin’s sister Shiori from interfering and unapproachable to supportive and emotionally vulnerable without losing her innate strength has been a big draw for me in the MASTERED series and it’s a joy to see it come to fruition in UNRAVELED. As strong as she has needed to be from the start, it’s only when Shiori lets down her guard with Knox that we see the full person behind the facade. And when Knox trusts her with his newly discovered submission, the results are exhilarating. We see so much more of both characters and what’s shaped them into the people we think we know today that when they come together, it’s seems impossible that they could have ever resisted each other before. Even when the dreaded black moment of big misunderstanding arrives like clockwork, we see that neither of them is really ready to give up for good, and it makes their final HEA all the sweeter.

UNRAVELED is a solid entry in a series that keeps getting better and better for me, and I can’t wait to see how Lorelei James is going to keep it going next.

For me, the name Lorelei James is synonymous with rough, sexy cowboys and badass women who drive them crazy! So when I heard about Ms. James' MASTERED series, I was ecstatic to read something new from one of my GO TO authors. Now, I was a little late to the game, and started with UNRAVELED, Book 3 in the series, but it was fine because it can totally be read as a standalone for sure! After becoming so enamored with Shiori Hirano and Knox Lofgren, the amazing lead characters in UNRAVELED, I can safely say that Ms. James' can DO NO WRONG! The name Lorelei James is NOW synonymous with BDSM Romance.

With UNRAVELED, this author gives us a scorching, intense love story of two people trying to figure out who they are with and without each other. It's raw, emotional, and very complex. It sets the bar for BDSM Romance for sure.

Shiori is a woman so determined to bring out the submissive nature in the VERY alpha, Knox Lofgren. She feels the pull of their connection, and she will stick to her guns to make him acknowledge the submissive within. Knox is as alpha, strong, and protective as they come, so when he feels the urge to do anything to please this woman who stands before him, he is somewhat perplexed. A proposition is struck, so let the games begin. This connection, this pull that they feel for one another, has them questioning everything. Just when they are moving forward, something happens that pushes them three steps back.

Spending more time with each other, learning their ways, opening up their hearts and exposing their souls bring them that much closer to a happily ever after.

The push/pull, love/hate, competitive nature of these two characters make this story suspenseful and enticing. A beautiful, erotic, and luscious romance, UNRAVELED will take you on a unique journey full of kinky goodness! Lorelei James is one of a kind, and she continues to blow me away with her writing.

I know everyone is completely in love with Ronin, and yes I love him too.  But I was ready for a change and beyond excited to be reading about Knox.  Sexy, alpha goodness Knox.  I was so intrigued about how Ms. James would handle his relationship with Shiori, since we've known she likes to play on the dominant side.  And I'm here to tell you that Lorelei James ROCKED it!

UNRAVELED is without a doubt my absolute favorite in The Mastered Series...Knox it's where it's at!  I love that man.  He's such a powerful, alpha male and he gives himself completely to Shiori.  He cares for her.  He wants to protect her.  Deacon and all the others will have a hard time taking my Knox's place.

I know some people may be concerned about the fact that the hero is in the submissive position, but don't let this fool you.

And then a little while later I'll start getting excited about the next books.  I can't wait for Deacon's book!  Bring it on!

DNF
I tried a lot, like, A LOT, I even made it as far as 45%, but this book is insufferable.

First of all: "Such a shame. She didn’t waste time with men who went both ways." ???
Why do you introduce a random extra flirting with the FL just so she can reject him specifically because he's attracted to both men and women????

"“Do we wanna dance? Or just drink? Or watch hot guys dance together at a gay club while we drink?” Katie asked." Why????

And why is it that you are calling a japanese woman exotic? Why ate you always treating the beauty of a japanese woman as something exotic???? That's not the compliment you think it is.

Also, why excuse and justify the ML's loud and hostile outbursts of jealousy, in public, as being some "alpha man who is protective and possessive of his woman" thing? And framing it as being attractive? He's just embarrassing her over and over again, in public, just because.

Every single page that I read of this book reeked of male insecurity. This ML worked at a bdsm club for five years and still has some weird thoughts about male submissives:
"He snorted. He wasn’t a simpering girly man with mommy issues."

And sure, that can be worked throughout the book but it didnt seem like that was the direction because every page just kept the same feeling of that thought of his and approached his submission to the FL as something he did only because she wanted it and he wanted to be with her.

Again, I didnt finish the book, maybe he has a development and changes, but the way this processes was approached so far was just uncomfortable. It's hard to get into the scene if real submission feels like a torture to him.

And I really cant bring myself to be interested in his potential progress when the book keeps excusing some toxic masculinity behaviour because he is a man and that's what a man do, just treating it like "it is what it is" and the FL has to work her way around it.

Shiori Hirano can’t believe that a man as beautiful as Knox can be that much of a jerk. Their rows at Black Arts have become legendary and she would love nothing better than to pin his arrogant face to the mat. Nothing except having him serve her on his knees.

Watching him at Twisted, she senses a side of him that is waiting just under the surface and she wants to be the one that teaches him to embrace it.

Knox Lofgren is the perfect alpha male. Ronin has left him in charge of the dojo while he is in Japan – along with Shiori. He has struggled to fight his attraction to her from day one and he’s biding his time until she admits that she wants him too. He never dreamed that he could want to call any woman “Mistress” but now that he has a taste of Shiori, he doesn’t want to be without her.
Will what they have together be enough to keep her in Denver after Ronin returns or will she leave him behind with a hunger that only she can satisfy?

Unraveled is the book that turns the tables on BDSM romance! Shiori is a woman in control and Knox is the chink in her armour. Together they create a bold new paradigm with a constant give and take of sexual tension and tender moments. The passion and emotional intensity are at levels that only Lorelei can evoke and that alone makes it worthy to be a part of this legendary series…

Thanks Penguin Group Berkeley for a free book to read and review.

I have been eyeing this series for sometime now, marking them -to read- in goodreads. So I was surprised to actually get book three. It's a standalone but the other characters have books so it may help to read them in order to get the full effect. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought it would since it contained a submissive alpha male which seems like an oxymoron but it's not. In fact it takes a strong man to submit to a woman who wants to please him. Ob - Knox - ious, which was a cute and well deserved nickname realizes that it's okay for the woman to take charge in the bedroom. In fact he's quite never liked sex better than when Shiori is taking charge. But at work, he's the boss. This is positively the best male submissive book I have liked since Anita Blake brought Nathaniel home as her sub. The author manages to make us believe that Knox can be submissive and still retain his alpha role. I felt highly entertained as these two battled it out. Great character chemistry! Overall entertainment was five stars.
