The Thing About Falling: Poems

Rate this book
From Grammy award-winning spoken word artist and poet Tarriona ‘Tank’ Ball, comes a powerful second collection of poetry about falling out of love and into a renewed sense of self.

After getting “vulnerable AF” on her 2021 book tour, Tank realized she was truly ready to move on from her first love. In The Thing About Falling, she writes about that experience as well as what followed—a period of shallow comfort, followed by a much deeper transformation.

Organized in sections that follow the author from heartbreak to rebound to new love, the poetry that flows is an honest, witty, and effortlessly charming account of one woman’s journey back to herself.

For the teenage reader facing their first heartbreak or the thirty-something looking for the strength to risk love again, The Thing About Falling is a heartfelt reminder that, love is always worth the fall.

Tarriona Ball’s poetry resonates deeply with me, as her personal experiences of heartbreak and loneliness are strikingly similar to my own. It is as if we have traversed parallel paths, albeit as distinct individuals, yet shared the profound weight of emotional isolation. Her words evoke a sense of nostalgia, reminding me of the beauty that can emerge from pain and the invaluable lessons that life imparts. By sharing her lived truths with the world, Ball creates a powerful connection, affirming that we are not alone in our struggles.

This was one of the many books I bought on vacation in New Orleans, because, well 1.) I'm addicted to the written word and 2.) a book is a pretty great souvenir.

This poetry book was "vulnerable AF" as Tanjmk, the author notes, but it also was full of palpable grief regarding a relationship ending. You can feel the lostness of a future planned that has gone to pieces.

Not only does this book of poems reflect the pain she endures but it also highlights the power of growth with the readiness to choose hope and new love.
