I received a free copy of, Sweet and Salty!, by King Arthur Baking Company, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This book has great recipes for the whole family to make. Cookies, cakes, scones, everything looks so good, and so easy to make.

King Arthur Baking Company has created a comprehensive cookbook for young would-be bakers. The cookbook instructs kids on how to follow recipes, always having an adult nearby, what pans and utensils they need and the definition of various baking terms before embarking on some recipes accessible to various ages. They start with The Simplest Chocolate Cake, and every recipe is labeled by its difficulty. All the while the cookbook author(s) explain the WHYs, WHATs and HOWs of baking: why there’s vinegar in a chocolate cake, what is the difference between natural and Dutch-process cocoa, the difference between baking powder and baking soda, how do you mix and match frostings, how do you frost cupcakes and lots more! This cookbook may be aimed at youngsters, but this old lady found a lot to love! Five frosted stars!

In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley, King Arthur Baking Company, Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing and Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers in exchange for an honest review.

Thanks so much to NetGalley for the free Kindle book. My review is voluntarily given, and my opinions are my own.

My rating is split. As a cookbook overall, this is a 5 star. As a kids cookbook? It's more of a three or four star. Left my rating at a five, though, because it is such an amazing cookbook.

This isn't just a cookbook for kids; which, really, if I were strictly rating this as a kid's cookbook, I don't think it would be a five-star. Even recipes marked 'easy' usually require a knife and /or stove. This obviously was written for slightly older children, but don't expect every recipe in a kids' cookbook to use a stove.

On the other hand, if you are looking for some simple dessert recipes, this is great one. I knew when I saw them explaining why you put vinegar in a chocolate cake, their recipes would probably be great. Can't wait to try them, especially the easy cheesecake 😋

Definitely would recommend!

WOW!
This has to be the best cookbook I've ever picked up.
Whether you are a pro, have never baked before, want to let your kids explore and be adventurous beyond making PB&J or Boxed Mac N Cheese, THIS IS FOR YOU!
If you are an adult who wants to impress without all the stress in baking, this book is for you.
Filled with 53 Sweet treats and 34 savory or salty delights, there is something for everyone.

The book takes out the complications, provides photographic references for all 87 recipes, honest and openly explaining every one of the recipes step-by-step; No weird ingredients or impossible tasks, this is actually just as helpful for a teenager or adult as it is for kids in the kitchen.
Parents, start using this in the kitchen with your children. Parents, gift this to your teenager. Parents gift this to yourselves or that culinary-crisis in your life, or your college kid who still wants Grandma's banana pudding or cornflake cookies or cinnamon rolls or homemade cheez-its, or cheeseburgers or homemade bread...Yeah, all of that and more are found in these pages.
If you know about me and my reviews, this is one that is going on my "To Own" List!

This book is top notch! I will be buying a book when it’s released.

From perfect pictures to perfectly laid out instructions it’s an all around yes for not just kids but adults, too. I appreciated the level of difficulty noted on each recipe.

Thanks NetGalley and Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing for providing an ARC. All opinions are my own.

I shouldn't have waited so long to review Sweet & Salty! Cookbook—because it has become a genuine favorite in our house.

I asked my two older boys (ages 5 and 8) to each pick three recipes they wanted to try, and we’ve been slowly working them into our weekly meals. Cooking from this book together has been such a bright spot for our family. The recipes are written in a way my kids can truly understand and follow, which helps them feel confident and genuinely involved instead of just “helping” from the sidelines.

One of my favorite parts of this cookbook is how it explains the science behind what you’re doing in the kitchen—in a way that is clear and actually makes sense to kids (and adults). I honestly realized how many things I’ve been doing while cooking for years without ever knowing why. Learning the reason behind certain steps has made the process more interesting for all of us and sparked great conversations while we cook.

What surprised me most is how much I’m learning right alongside my boys. This cookbook has created meaningful, low-stress time in the kitchen for our family—and it’s been especially fun watching my kids feel proud of meals they helped choose, understand, and prepare. If you’re looking for a kid-friendly cookbook that truly works in real life and teaches both cooking and the “why” behind it, this is an easy recommendation.

Although this is designed for young chefs, it is still a great choice for anyone who wants to learn more about how to cook. The photos are appealing and helpful, the directions are easy to follow, and the “whys”/explanations are informative.

I received an e-copy from NetGalley and Simon Schuster Children’s Publishing in exchange for my honest review.
What a fun and pleasant cookbook! Lovely to look at, I who prefer hard copies even enjoyed the digital version. The recipes are split into the two title sections, each with many varied tastes, styles, and skills. The individual recipe is marked, “easy,” “medium,” or “project,” and many feature a separate informational section on a particular ingredient or skill. Coming from a company with a highly valued reputation I expected great things and I saw them here.
This cookbook is marketed for young bakers but I believe most people will learn something and enjoy what this book has to offer. That being said, I know a 10yo who will be very excited to receive this as a gift and bake from it. I feel comfortable that he will be able to follow the clear instructions, enjoy the writing style and, if there’s a question on technique, that I will be able to help with those side sections. Five stars for clarity and formatting/pictures, and a presumptive five stars for the baked goods soon to be tested.

King Arthur Baking Company has been supplying flour to America since 1790, so they’ve learned a thing or two in the last 200-plus years. Their latest cookbook is Sweet & Salty!, a book with over eighty recipes specifically written for kids to bake. There is a wide variety of sweet bakes, but there are also a bunch of savory recipes. Honestly, there is just a little bit of everything in this beautiful cookbook.

There are pages and pages of cakes, cupcakes, cookies, muffins, pies, breads, and pastries. Everything from Pig in a Blanket to Super-Fudge Brownies, Banana Pudding to Garlic Knots, Empanadas Three Ways to Berry Easy Cheesecake pop from the pages with photos and lots of helpful tips. Each recipe is labeled either Easy, Medium, or Project, so readers can see right away how many skills will be needed and how much time they’ll need to invest.

Easy projects include a Super Simple Strawberry Cake, Giant Chocolate Chip Cookie, Any-Fruit Cobbler, No-Knead Crusty Bread, Fake Focaccia, and Better-Than-Boxed Mac and Cheese. Medium projects are a little more challenging, like the Gingerbread Sheet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting, Fluffernutter Cookies, Caramel Apple Galettes, Ranch Monkey Bread, Pizza Party Buns, Maple Bacon Biscuits, and Sausage Rolls.

The recipes marked Project take a little more skill or more time, like the Chocolate-Covered Cherry Cake with Frosting and Ganache, 2-layer Happy Birthday Cake, Super-Size Peanut Butter Cup Tart, Profiteroles with Ice Cream and Hot Fudge, Ooey-Gooey Cinnamon Buns, or Spinach and Feta Pastry Pockets.

The recipes build skills, from easy to medium to project. But there are also short articles that explain baking concepts, like how yeast works or how to temper eggs or what the difference is between baking soda and baking powder. There is an explanation of Cake Gymnastics (how to get a cake out of the pan), how to separate eggs and how to knead dough by hand, all with extra photos to show techniques that bakers need to know.

The cookbook starts with some quick lessons, to help set young chefs up for success, including the very important do not use the oven or a sharp knife without an adult in the room. It emphasizes reading the recipe all the way through first and getting everything together that you need. And then explains things like the best way to measure ingredients, the best way to line a pan with parchment paper, when to sift the flour or other ingredients. how to soften butter, and how to cream or fold your batters.

From page one, this cookbook is setting young bakers up for years and years of success in the kitchen, and that is my favorite thing about it. It’s clearly written for young chefs, but it gives understandable instructions to any new baker, so it could be just as helpful to adults wanting to learn more about the kitchen. I love the colorful layout, which adds so much joy and energy as I read through these pages. My biggest disappointment with Sweet & Salty! is that it wasn’t around for me when I was 8, because I would have loved it. It would have taught me so much about ingredients and techniques, things I didn’t learn or understand for decades, and I would have worn out these pages baking some of these dishes over and over. I think it’s the perfect gift for any beginning baker.

Egalleys for Sweet & Salty! were provided by Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing through NetGalley, with many thanks, but the opinions are mine.

Get those stoves and ovens ready because this book holds a mountain of tasty ideas, which are sure to delight.

This book holds quite a few recipes...many more than I first expected. Most run in the flour direction, but there are other treats included as well. From crackers to brownies to breads and more, there's something for everyone. The first half of the book hits all those sweet treats, while the second slides into the saltier and savory direction. The difficulty of the recipes is also diverse, including everything from marshmallow treats to cupcakes to kneaded breads. But what really makes this book shine are the explanations of the how-tos and whys, which are sprinkled between the recipes. Bakers learn things such as what the 'ribbon stage' is, how to cut a layered cake, tricks to make biscuits rise higher, and much more. The index at the end makes it easy to find whatever recipe is desired, too.

While this one is recommend for ages 6 to 10, I'd slide that upper range all the way up. While the photos and illustrations might lean in a kid direction, the actual knowledge and recipes in these pages are great for even much older bakers, especially beginners. The recipes cover a very large range even on the cultural side. Mochi, nana, tortillas, pretzels... well, it's a smorgasbord. And the hints, tricks, and explanations offer insights, which aren't always common knowledge. This huge array of recipes also means that the intended age audience (6-10) will need to do many of these recipes with supervision, especially at first. The recipes are marked with difficulty levels next to each title to help out on that end.

The recipes are clearly written out with each step carefully worded. The ingredients tend to steer toward items in the household, but due to the huge range of directions, also include items which will need to be purchased. Only a few of these are more difficult, though. A photo of each treat stands with the recipe, which I truly appreciate. If you're looking for dietary information, however, there isn't a single sign of that...allergies, calories, or anything on that end.

This is one of the better cookbooks I've run across for the kids, since it can easily stay with them as they slide into adulthood and allows them to grow as bakers without having to search for another fitting book.

The King Arthur Baking Company has produced a wonderful cookbook for young chefs . I appreciated the simple division of recipes into first Sweet and then Salty. Many more of the dessert recipes were easier to make so I get the logic that they would be the entry-level category with learners advancing to the more difficult savory recipes such a breads later on. All of the recipes were marked as easy, medium or "project" and there were "special equipment alerts" indicated in a few instances. Most recipes needed only standard kitchen items and ingredients from a typical grocery. Some offered good flexibility such as the Korean Jeon pancakes where a variety of vegetables would work or the pizza recipe which allowed for 3 different types of baking pans for different crusts. The sidebar information contained some terrific tips such as explaining the "ribbon stage" of cake batter and the difference between Dutch process cocoa and regular cocoa powder.

When I first glanced at the book cover I though it said it was for "young adult" chefs instead of "young chefs." So in my early impressions I felt that the recipes were a good level for teens but that the photos were way too young - some kids pictured were even missing front teeth! Cute, but at this text level - no. Later I realized that the book title was clearly indicating that it was for for younger people and the inside cover suggested an age range 8 and up. With this in mind the photos are fine (excepting those 6 year olds) but then the recipes seem quite advanced for single-digit bakers. I only bring this up because I would say there is a legitimate disconnect here with the amount of writing and detail of the recipes connecting more with kids in the 11-16 range and the photos being of 6-10 year olds. With an older helper present I am sure all could work out, but young independent chef's would need a much easier starter cookbook.

This cookbook does a great job explaining some of the basics in detail. For example, “What do you do when you need to soften butter quickly?” The tip: stand it up in the microwave for 7–15 seconds with a paper towel over it. Keep checking until it feels soft with some resistance, but not so melted that it turns to liquid. If it gets too warm and soft, just let it cool at room temperature until it reaches the right consistency.

One thing I really like is how recipes are labeled by difficulty: easy, medium, or “project” for the more complex ones. There are plenty of easy recipes for younger kids to try, as well as more unique ones like the Donut Muffin, something I had never heard of before, but now can’t wait to make with my tweens!

I also appreciate the helpful photos that show what each finished dish should look like. Sidebar notes offer great tips, like why a certain ingredient is used or how to make a crust extra flaky (chill the dough before filling. Simple but effective advice!).

This cookbook is geared toward tweens, with some recipes that may require adult supervision for the “project” level ones. Could kids younger than tweens use it? Absolutely! It would make a great cookbook for younger children to explore with a parent or older sibling.

One thing I personally would have appreciated is the inclusion of nutritional information. It would be a great way to help young cooks learn more about the foods they’re making and eating.

Many thanks King Arthur Baking Company, and Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Great introductory section for new bakers. Tips for working in the kitchen, kitchen tools that you’ll be using, and most frequently used pans, including photos. Ten Quick Lessons for Baking Success: Instructions on how to measure ingredients, your oven, and how to use parchment paper and more. Very good tips, not only for children, but for anyone who isn’t familiar with working in the kitchen.

Sweets Chapter:
Lots of great, easy recipes, including some explanations about why certain ingredients are important in your baking. I love the in-depth explanations on how to perform the step in the recipe. For example, for making the Berry Easy Cheesecake, the instruction “Set the pie pan on a rimmed baking sheet” also contains this information: This makes it easier to move the pan in and out of the oven and also protects the bottom of the crust from burning.) This is the type of advice Mom or Grandma might impart if they were bakers, but not everyone is. There is also a tip for this recipe to make the cheesecake a raspberry swirl cake.

Salty Chapter
This chapter has a nice selection of breads, crackers, pizzas, biscuits, etc. What a great collection of recipes.

I love this beautifully illustrated cookbook for recipes for beginning bakers of any age, people interested in delicious recipes, and for learning about the basics of working in a kitchen.

King Arthur Baking has a well-deserved reputation for the quality of their products, so I happily picked up this ebook. I have two daughters, one in middle school and one in high school, and I’m always on the lookout for how they can grow in confidence and skill in the kitchen.

I will be adding this to our physical cookbook collection this fall. It can stand alone as an introductory resource, giving detailed information on safe kitchen behaviors as well as outlining common tools, but it boasts delicious recipes that will become welcome additions to a family's snack rotation. On top of that, the photography engages readers and whets our appetites for the delectable-looking goodies.

As the title states, the recipes are grouped under sweet and salty categories. I know my girls will be equally captivated to explore cooking and baking and can already picture all the pages they will earmark. This is replete with helpful information, even teaching me several things. I cannot wait to give it to my girls and watch as they explore from this firm foundation.

(Thank you to Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.)

Looking to get started baking? This recipe book offers a wide selection of beginner-friendly recipes, intelligent explanations, tips and tricks, and some great ideas. While it's clearly written for kids, the recipes range from fun recipes like giant cookies to sophisticated bites like fresh focaccia, plus there's a lot of great information any baker might find useful. Ever wonder what cream of tartar really is? What recipe books mean when they say to "cream butter and sugar"? What's the point of bringing eggs to room temperature? This book is laid out with info pages for techniques and facts right in front of the relevant recipes, which ensures the recipes are still short and easy to read while your hands might be sticky. I tried out a few recipes for myself, selecting one marked easy and one marked advanced. Both recipes were easy to understand and resulted in a tasty baked confection. This is a recipe book I'll certainly keep on my shelf and recommend to anyone looking to start or advance their baking skills.

Thank you to King Arthur Baking and NetGalley for this ARC. All opinions are my own.

My little five year old thinks this is the best book in the entire world. When we sat down to decide what we wanted to cook, she said everything was her favorite.

We finally settled on making the Super-Sized Peanut Butter Cup Tart (for obvious reasons) and she loved how easy it was!

As the adult in this situation, I loved how this is an actual cookbook, and not a food assembly book. Too often, cookbooks for kids is all about assembling a recipe, but SWEET & SALTY! is so much more than that! These are actual recipes with actual measurements that requires the young chefs to use a bit more brain power. She loved how she had to read the recipes and then find the right numbers on the scale we used (we used the weight measurements instead of volume, which I love that this book has both). The instructions are also quite easy, so she was able to follow along and tell me what to do.

The entire cookbook is also colorful and fun to read. Each recipe has an image of what it's supposed to look like, which is ideal for recipes written for kids.

This might possibly the very best cookbook for kids that I've ever seen!

Thank you to SimonKids for my #gifted copy. My thoughts are my own.

This is a lovely cookbook for young bakers, from a brand that I trust. I like that it starts out with tips, basic tools, and short lessons on the basics of baking (how to measure ingredients, using parchment paper, etc.) And all this (as well as the recipes) comes with beautiful, clear, colorful photos. After that, recipes are divided by "sweet" and "salty," though I'd categorize the latter more as "savory" than "salty." Each recipe is clear and easy to follow--I didn't feel that anything was missing or skipped, which I think is especially important for bakers starting at the beginning. The book includes foundational and more unique recipes, so there's a lot that can be done with it once the basics have been mastered. Useful explanations are also scattered throughout, such as what different ingredients do, how to choose ingredients, and tips for advancement. And it's all geared toward younger bakers (but probably not small children--the reading level is more complex than that). I loved the color and the food and how easy it is to follow. It's very giftable.

I don’t care what anyone says, I am the intended audience for this cookbook, “young bakers” be damned. I want to be part of the elite baking squad!

First and foremost, every recipe is accompanied by a photo of the finished product, and many include step-by-step pictures, plus clear explanations of techniques and ingredients. Each recipe feels like a teachable moment. The book is sprinkled with colorful, cheerful illustrations that make it extra engaging.

It’s perfect for beginning bakers of any age, with a variety of sweet and savory recipes that will definitely appeal to younger taste buds.

This is such a wonderful way to encourage kids to get involved in the kitchen and learn skills that will stick with them as they grow. Honestly, I would have loved a book like this as a child and I’d be just as thrilled to get it as a gift now.

Thank you to NetGalley, Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing | Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, and King Arthur Baking Company for this advanced copy. This review is voluntary and my opinions are entirely my own.

I was pleasantly surprised by this cookbook. It’s marketed as a kid’s cookbook and would be great for young beginner bakers, but I think offers something fun for all ages. The section at the beginning with general tips and supply info is helpful, as are the more specific tips sprinkled throughout. The whole book was vibrant and inviting and featured plenty of photos of what you’re making. Recipes are ranked on an easy/medium/hard scale at the start of each as well, which is an easy and helpful way to gauge skill level. I liked that some recipes also had several variations to try in one recipe, such as the different ice cream flavors or different mix ins for fruit muffins. I think this would be an excellent gift for a kid just getting into the kitchen, or a project to work on between a child/parent, child/grandparent, etc. As a child-free adult, I am still interested in picking up a copy when this releases.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for an eARC. All opinions are my own.

LOVED LOVED LOVED every single aspect of this book! It is the perfect book for kids and adults alike, as it gives you an insight into more than just baking, but measurements, not eating the dough (for kids anyway 😉), using sharp things such as knives, and how cleaning is not just a part of baking, but also a part of life too! There was also several pages dedicated to the kind of tools you use and most frequently used pans in baking. (some tools I didn't even know were a thing in baking, but now make SO much sense, because duh 😅)

The Caramel Apple Galettes, Any-Fruit Cobbler, Creamy Dreamy Chocolate Pudding, Pumpkin Pie Custard Cups, Cheese Not-Its & Garlic Knots are just SOME of the recipes I am excited to try not just by myself, but also with my oldest daughter!

I loved the equal mix of Sweet treats and Salty treats, as there were a ton to choose from, depending on what you're in the mood for! 🤪😋

HUGE THANKS to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for a copy of this digital ARC in exchange for my review.

This was a really great intro book. I looked through it with my kid (5 yrs old) and they really liked the recipe options but it wasn't quite broken down enough for them. Seemed to more appropriately fit "new bakers" compared to "young bakers" (the pictures were really the only thing gearing it towards kids - more so to teen/pre-teens).

The numerated recipe steps were a great formatting choice. Though, I think a different layout, than the traditional recipe format, would have been beneficial; especially for a book geared towards young bakers. It was rather text block heavy.

This will be a fun baking book to go through together - they've already created a shopping list for their top recipes: pretzel bites, banana pudding, dreamsicle ice cream cake, mostly apple cake, and cinnamon buns. We're excited to start baking through these together.

This book would be a great gift for a child who is just learning to cook or for a child who loves to cook. Even for an adult who's just getting into baking - as long as they don't mind that this book is kid-focused. There are a lot of recipes that would be fun to make. From basics that would help them learn their way around the kitchen to more complex recipes.

I love all the notes and baking tips throughout the book. For example, the difference between baking soda and baking powder, how to avoid getting egg shell in your cooking, what cream of tartar is, and more. The kinds of things you learn from experience or curiousity, but aren't always included in a cookbook that assums you have more experience.

This cookbook also had a picture of almost every recipe - one of my favorite things!

I really liked this cookbook for young bakers. I appreciated the many color photographs and helpful information many new to baking don’t know. Things like creaming butter, folding and melting chocolate are described with easy instructions. The useful photos of various pans and tools and their names are helpful. The recipes are labeled easy, medium and project where a beginner may need help. The recipes themselves are step by step and measurements are given in traditional cups and tablespoons but also include the more accurate measure of grams. I enjoyed reading through the book and chose a few simple recipes I am willing to give a try. For beginning cooks of any age. Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing for the eARC and I am leaving an honest review.

This was a very fun cookbook and well laid out with different sections.

At the beginning it gives tips of what to do before you start to cook and also lists the tools and items you will need to be able to make the recipes which is very helpful.

It's broken into two sections Sweet and Salty

I have a few favourite recipes from each section such as

Sweet:
Malted Milk Cake
Pink Lemonade Cake and
Tres Leches Cake

Salty:
French Bread Pizza
Garlic Knots
and Loaded Baked Potato waffles

There are so many amazing recipes this is just a few that were very quickly added to the list of must try by my son! Great book!

Thanks so much to NetGalley for the free Kindle book. My review is voluntarily given, and my opinions are my own.

This cookbook is such a delight—I especially appreciated the easy, medium, and project ratings, which made it simple to decide what to tackle depending on my mood (and schedule). The step-by-step instructions are clear and practical, covering even the small but essential skills like removing cakes from a tin (and of course I thought of Moira and David Rose during the folding tutorial). My son and I loved making the any-fruit cobbler—it was a huge hit with friends, including their kids. We’re excited to try the Sunflower bread and the chocolate swirl bread next.

I know it seems like it's marketed for children, but for a newbie like me, this was really helpful. I've been wanting to get more into baking, and this is a great book to get started with. It begins with tips, as well as an explanation of the products you will be using. There are plenty of recipes divided by sweet and salty and labeled by difficulty, with beautiful images of the final product or step-by-step instructions. It's easy to understand and explains the recipes well. I will definitely be trying out some of these recipes for the upcoming holidays.

Thanks to Netgalley for the advanced read.

My kids and I enjoyed looking through and trying a few different recipes this last week. We all thought the book was really nicely made, pictures looked great, and layout was good. We also liked the spurts of cooking how-to's throughout the book. My kids one thought was that there wasn't enough information or suggestions for those that have food allergies. As a household with food allergies they are very aware of those things because they want everyone in the house to have safe food to eat when we make things. We felt the recipes were easy to follow otherwise and for some of the recipes were able to make appropriate switches.

A fun and well explained introduction to baking for children. The photo's and explanations are well laid out, it starts wtih the basics, as well as tools and dives into the simplier recipes or let's say the ones that would be most appealing. The cookbook then goes on to other items ranging from cakes, cupcakes, pastries, dinners and bread. It encompasses a great adventure for children to try their hand in the kitchen and get a great start on a foor journey. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and publisher for the opportunity.

This is a cookbook that will be on many people’s shelves.
