This series of graphic novels by "Run" is great. It envisions life in Dark Meat City, an alternate Los Angeles that is even more poverty stricken and filled with gangs and violence. The story follows the life of two main characters, roommates and best friends, just trying to get by as a pizza delivery kid and make it in society. Unfortunately, they run afoul of gangs, the US government, aliens taking control of the world, and other unfortunate things. Throw in some luchadores who are a secret society to battle evil forces from beyond and then an outright invasion of DMC and you got one crazy story. It all plays out over the 5 books in this series that I got in a great Kickstarter as hardcovers.
The art and story by Guillame Renard is great, so much details and nuances that make this series top notch. I had come across the story because it was turned into a movie a few years ago in Japan and then was available for streaming. It hooked me then when I saw it and then I had to get the books. Seriously, he captures the life and styles of LA perfectly. Even with the characters not being fully human at times, they are still believable. I really suggest you pick up a copy of this series if you are into collecting graphic novels, they are great. I also loved how when they are in areas or situations where other languages are dominant, such as Chinatown or dealing with the Russian mafia, that the graffiti or dialog is in the correct language and I would use my phone to check. Well done by the author and artist.
Now there is a lot of violence and some drug use, not too much sexual material, but this is definitely not for little kids. But it does make things more realistic for a story involving aliens and all out warfare in LA.
