Pat Mills, born in 1949 and nicknamed 'the godfather of British comics', is a comics writer and editor who, along with John Wagner, revitalised British boys comics in the 1970s, and has remained a leading light in British comics ever since.
His comics are notable for their violence and anti-authoritarianism. He is best known for creating 2000 AD and playing a major part in the development of Judge Dredd.
Now, this is old-school 2000 AD in all its glory and weirdness, but to me not at the same level as classics from the British imprint like Dredd, ABC Warriors, or Nemesis. Sci-fi and sword and sorcery blend in a story that involves time travel and extradimensional conspiracies (some of Mills' major obsessions). It gets a little bit confusing, and it loses its plot along the way, until the rushed finale. But probably, the thing is that Slaine doesn't convince me 100% as a character in this story, the way he is written. Still, there is good action and some interesting design, as well as gorgeous art from Belardinelli, Fabry, Talbot.
