Greg Rucka, is an American comic book writer and novelist, known for his work on such comics as Action Comics, Batwoman: Detective Comics, and the miniseries Superman: World of New Krypton for DC Comics, and for novels such as his Queen & Country series.
The old Guard is about a group of immortal warriors led by a seven thousand year old woman called Andy by her friends who all adapted modern names. It is also the story of a twentyseven year old Marine that got killed in Afghanistan, and yet she did not die. Got found by her equals and now has to adapt to a whole new life. The first story is about being found out by a billionaire who wants to learn the secret of immortality but there is no real secret that these ancient people know about. Two get taken to cut their secret from their corpses if need be. However the wrath this rich man is going to experience is huge. The second story is about a lost immortal who wants to rule the world in evil which is not what the old Guard is about. treachery galore.
These comics were never made for the faint of hearts. Immortals seem to be best at battle and hope one day their story ends.
Well written and easily better than the two Netflix movies.
Well advised to read this big collection of comics.

So I bought this at the Forbidden Planet in London near Camden Market. Which is a very busy tourist spot but you can also find some lovely stuff.
This comic feels a bit like that place. It is gory, grim and does not hesitate in showing that.
It is also unapologetically queer. It just is not an issue. The story is not about that aspect in life. It is about betrayal, finding meaning in life, forgiveness and love.
The last part could be found in the small things. I do think it will have a bigger part in the next issues.
I picked this up because, although I did had some interest in the comic, I mainly wanted to read it so I could watch the show. The things I heard about it was positive but I have not seen rave reviews or so. Which is a bit strange when I think about it because I do try to follow queer people who like comics.
The thing is, the story is mainly about what happens when you will not stay dead. You do not know the reason for that. You are still human I. all the ways that count. You die but you will not stay dead. Those are the things the characters are grappling with. And it is fascinating because the story takes the background of the characters in account. Nile is Black. Slavery means something different to her than for the others. But they are aware.
I really wish we could have gotten more about the other characters. Maybe there is more to find. I found them all fascinating.
This was a lovely find and I love that I have this lovely edition.
