Phil Rosenthal, creator of the hit sitcom, EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND, and host of the Netflix series, SOMEBODY FEED PHIL, has gathered favorite recipes from family, friends, and chefs from all over the world for this cookbook. The result is a great collection with a wide variety of dishes that are sure to please anyone with an appreciation for different cuisines.
This book is full of photos which is a plus because we tend to eat with our eyes first. The categories of recipes include breakfast items, sandwiches, soups, stews, and curries, shareables, entrees , desserts, and sauces and condiments. Most of the ingredients you should be able to find at any decent grocery store, butcher, and seafood shop. Helpful tips are included with many of the recipes. My best guess is the skill level required for cooking these recipes is more intermediate than beginner.
Food brings people together and this book really celebrates that. If you are traveling abroad, it’s connecting with a restaurant or food truck owner after eating a delicious meal or hanging out with family and partaking in a home cooked meal. Food is a source of comfort and a big part of every culture. If you consider yourself a foodie or agree a meal is more than just subsistence, I recommend checking out this cookbook.
Phil’s Favorites is out now! If you are a fan of the show on Netflix, Somebody Feed Phil. Then you will enjoy this book! The recipes are not only from season 5-7, but also from his friends and family! A perfect book to gift to the chef in your own family!
This cookbook is exactly what it says on the cover: Phil Rosenthal's favorites. His voice comes through clearly at the beginning of each recipe as he tells you why he picked it and what he loves about it. There are lots of recipes from the places he's visited on his show "Somebody Feed Phil" as well as some that have personal meaning to him.
I tried two recipes: one of the easiest and one of the hardest. The easy one was Wife and Husband's Honey Cheese Toast from Kyoto. I liked the idea of a cheesy toast with blue cheese and honey but wasn't blown away by the recipe. Maybe it's because I didn't use shokupan for the bread? I also tried the braciole recipe. I found it a little intimidating because of how you have to pound and prep the meat, but I ended up buying some very thinly sliced beef and got around the least fun part of the recipe that way. I did like this recipe and think it turned out great.
Other recipes I'm interested in trying: Ludo Lefebvre's French Omelette, Marc Vetri's Mortadella and Ricotta Sandwich,Big Daddy's Hot Dogs, Scott Linder's Flourless Chocolate Cake, The Pie Guy's Marionberry Pie.
There are a lot of sandwich recipes, including two tuna sandwiches, two lobster rolls and two burgers. There's chopped liver. There's a simple steak recipe. There are recipes for sauces and dressings like a dijon vinaigrette and ultimate hamburger onions.
All in all, I liked the tone of the book. Many of the recipes are slight variations on things I've already got go-to recipes for, but they all look good. For me, this book was more about enjoying Phil Rosenthal than having a workhorse cookbook.
I had never heard of Phil’s tv show but you can see how this cookbook caught my eye. This man has the best facial expressions! The book is full of stories about people he has bonded with across the planet and the recipes for the food they shared. He seems like a fun guy to have around. My kids and I enjoyed most of these recipes. Thank you for the gifted copy, Simon Element. 😻 Here’s what I made: 🍦 Hallie’s Vanilla Bean Ice Cream- I’ve never made ice cream with cream cheese in it so I was skeptical, but this actually has a very clean flavor and texture. My kids especially loved it. 🥓 Max’s Fluffy Eggs with Slab Bacon and Toast- this is a super complicated way to make mediocre scrambled eggs 😬 🥪 The Yolko Ono- WOW. Best thing I’ve eaten in awhile. Pesto. Jammy egg yolk. Amazing, flavorful homemade sausage patty. 😮💨 Can’t wait to have this again. 🦃 Bill Miller’s Turkey-Brie Sandwich- the red onion cranberry sauce is so great with the turkey and brie. I never got a thanksgiving sandwich this year and this really did it for me 🍔 Orfali Bros’ Cheeseburger- sweet brown butter onions, a copycat of In-N-Out’s spread, tons of cheese, and wagyu beef. You know it was awesome.
Thank you so much to Phil Rosenthal and Simon Elemental for the gifted copy! 💛📚
Okay… confession time. Before this, I didn’t really know who Phil was, but who doesn’t love a good cookbook?! 🤷♀️ And THEN I realized he’s the host of Somebody Feed Phil, which immediately made this even cooler.
This cookbook is such a vibe. It’s not just recipes; it’s stories, travels, and moments with friends and family all woven through the pages. 🥰🍽️
There are SO many recipes I want to make, but one that instantly stood out?
👉 Bill Miller’s Turkey-Brie Sandwich (aka “The Phil”), which sounds absolutely delicious.
And the photography? STUNNING. I especially loved the sweet photo of Phil and his wife sharing a meal at the table. ❤️
If you love cookbooks filled with heart, stories, and dishes from around the world… I 100% recommend checking this one out.
I absolutely love Somebody Feed Phil as he travels the world and experiences so many different delicious foods. This cookbook expresses his favorites from his friends and family, which provides a diverse profile of dishes. Overall, I didn't find a lot of recipes for myself to enjoy, either do to my food preferences or food allergy, but I'm sure others would enjoy the recipes more than I.
Fun cookbook! Not a lot in this cookbook I would personally want to make, but surely enjoyed reading it. The turkey, Brie & cranberry sauce sandwich looks good! And the burgers by Sean Brock. And the crust on the pot for the biryani…want to try that. And…several of the desserts. Maybe a few of the sauces. So…maybe there were a number of things that piqued my interest after all. Ha! 🤪
There are some very good recipes in here so I would definitely get this one ! Now I am going to go get his last recipe book after I finish with some here. Especially like the black cocoa brownies.
