Rate this book
From one of the world’s most influential designers, a rich tour-de-force that explores how history, character, and vision come together to make a home at once timeless and personal.

Nate Berkus is beloved for his elegant, narrative-driven interiors that are layered and deeply personal.

In this beautifully photographed book, filled with Nate’s warmth and years of knowledge, he shares his Four Tenets of Good Design. They are not a recipe to follow, as much as they are inspirational ideas to help get you

Make it Personal—Draw inspiration from the places you’ve been, what you love, and who you aspire to be at home.

Embrace History—A room feels most complete when it has old things in it; think about where you can bring in objects and details that have stood the test of time.

Build Character—Consider introducing architectural details, classic materials, and timeless finishes that will make your home unique.

Develop a Vision—Turn your inspiration into a design that embodies who you want to be at home and how you want to live.

For Nate Berkus, enduring design is honest, emotional, and tailored to the people who live in it. That means creating rooms that can grow and evolve with you. Foundations is an invitation and inspiration to design a space that is unequivocally yours.

One of the things I have long been self-conscious about has been fashion. I find myself very good at shaping my taste in the arts, politics, or hobbies, but the way I look and the appearance of my home & decor & clothing...I am at a loss, and am in awe of people who make it seem so easy.

As I set aside 2026 as a year I want to really self-improve on things I have long put off, design & fashion are toward the top of the list, and Berkus's book is structured for that. This book is not for everyone (it likely has things that a more advanced antiques shopper already knows, and if you're one of those people who look at inspiration pages and can only state "why is it so expensive?" without realizing there's a lesson of scale there, this isn't for you). But I loved the way he talks about design, ways of letting personality shine through in a world where HGTV shows teach you you're only supposed to look at things in a certain, very cookie-cutter way (not every house is about resell potential), and the very handy guide that he gives for different rooms and adding touches on a sliding scale rather than one big thought. The best compliment I can give this book is that I got it from the library, and now feel like it's so useful I will have to buy it for reference.

I chuckled as I noticed a typeset error page 54. “Primitive” is on bottom right instead of on the upper left heading page 55 where it should be. Yet, a little thing like that is almost a lovely period on exactly the sentiments Berkus has expressed in this amazing design book. His theme throughout foundational instruction is to embrace the imperfect, yet in the process creating a curated design that reflects intentionality and wholly reflective of your self/family. Comments about contrasts of him & Jeremiah were relatable. A fan of Berkus’ style since the Opera days, savoring his latest book today made my creativity buzz with inspiration… and crafting a list of things to really hunt for over time. The photography & words blended into a warm hug on a cold day in the NW, which is my only complaint that he didn’t go to the NW on tour. This book will be featured on my shelf and referred to before any interior project in future.

This book is a true distillation of a clearly wonderful career. Discernment takes time, with this book you get the secret code. Somehow the book brings design to the ground accessible level for us all and still helps us elevate our understanding while we go on the journey. You can read the book front to back (I did) and/or you can skim around to get nuggets of inspiration and awe as needed. Invest in the book, it’s an investment in you.

This is both a gorgeous coffee table book on interiors, and also a practical ‘how to’ make your home functional, comfortable and appealing. Nate takes you through different rooms and explains his design choices and offers suggestions for all budgets. As a design enthusiast, I loved this book and learned a few tips that I’m incorporating into our home.

First design book I’ve spent time reading every single page, and not just to look at the details and photos. Nate’s done a wonderful job explaining each detail of what he’s learned and employed over the years. I never used to like the vintage look, but he’s opened my eyes to the beauty of it.

Can’t wait to implement in my future personal projects.

The photographs in this book were stunning. I found his approach to design easy to follow and inspiring. I asked myself the questions in the book and am looking at things in my house differently. I will definitely be making some changes as a result. I would recommend this book if you are interesting in design.

I love Nate’s style so this book was a joy to read. Yes, I said read as many design books are mostly a visual experience. But I read all of his nuggets of design wisdom. Like the reminder how we shouldn’t rush to complete a room like a to-do list. Or where to go for inspiration. He gives tips on his fav paint colors, marble countertops, and what to spend on and save on.
