This volume of Dan Da Dan perfectly encapsulates what makes this series great. Emotions drive the story and combine exorcism, modern idols, heavy metal, a chase through a city and a beautiful flashback that feels real and heavy.

I'm just not enjoying this series as much as I did before :(

I can't tell if it's because of my reading slump or because I feel like the story is dragging. It seems like after every arc they are adding new characters/characters are becoming part of the main cast; nothing inherently wrong or bothersome, but becomes so if it is just to drag out a plot line (and it's starting to feel that way to me- instead of something new, fun, and interesting). Perhaps I'm used to the formula now :(

Please don't get me wrong though, this volume was "good" and I really liked the storyline/emotional beats- it just felt really formulaic (again, it just might be because of my own slump).

Wow, between all this randomness, this constantly hits with these our of nowhere emotional beats that actually make me tear up...
The most random-ass fights and bonkers action occurs, flip the page once and BOOM - the most beautiful conclusion or continuation for a character you know for lile 3 chapters makes you almost bawl your eyes out...

A much needed return to what I love so much about this series after going through the boring invasion arc. I absolutely love Rin and Mai, and really hope to see more of them!! ❤️

After the climactic events of the past few chapters, Dandadan takes a breather with this amusing, somewhat light volume. Class C's rep, Rin Sawaki, finally gets her time in the spotlight. Turns out, as with most everyone in Momo and Okarun's orbit, that Sawaki has a yokai problem of her own. Most of this volume is taken up with resolving her predicament, and while entertaining in Tatsu's typically cheeky and kinetic way, it's starting to feel a bit formulaic to me. Especially in the wake of Vamola's tale and the (barely) staved-off invasion of the Kur.

On the topic of the Kur, Count Saint-Germain arrives at Kami High posing as a teacher by the name of Sanjome. There's some comedy derived from his attempts to fit in, best exemplified in his awkward language (Niiiice) and cold stares. Okarun also gets a lead on the location of his missing nut, which looks to be the focus of the succeeding volume. The cliffhanger promised as much and left me wanting more, despite my reservations about the series feeling as though it's languishing.

As per usual with Tatsu, the art is mostly-stellar. There's some of his usual two-page spreads when it comes to the action, and he has some visual odes to Mad Max: Fury Road which made me smirk. Perhaps the weekly format took its toll just a bit during the publication of these chapters, as Tatsu does resort to reusing a panel of Seiko shouting something at Sawaki twice, though perhaps the repetition was intentional, IE for comic effect or kinetic impact.

If you've come this far, Dandadan is still a fun ride. And while I have my gripes, I was happy to finally learn Sawaki's backstory, was even moved by it. I just hope the series gets weirder from here on out.
