Seven years ago, he broke her heart. This time, the tables are turned!
Chelsea Schumacher always knew this day would come. Sooner or later, she would have to face Justin Jacobs, the guy who broke her heart when she was just seventeen years old. With his brother about to marry her best friend, that day is finally here. It’s been seven years since she last saw Justin, but time has done nothing to dull the pain of his rejection. If anything, the ache has grown worse. Determined not to let him have any power over her, and more determined not to ruin her best friend’s wedding, Chelsea makes her own vow. Things will be different this time. Or will they?
This Time, the first in a quartet, focuses on Chelsea Schumacher’s trip to her hometown for her best friend’s wedding … to the brother of the guy who broke her seventeen-year-old heart. Justin Jacobs’introduction back into her life, even for a week, is enough to throw her into a tailspin that could have disastrous results. The book explores how the two get to know each other again despite the flurry of wedding-prep and usual drama brought about by joining two families.
Much detail in this book is devoted to a car accident that of Justin’s brother, Darren, was involved in during high school. The accident was really what brought him and Danni together seven years earlier. The accident also served as a turning point for Justin as he took on the role of “protector” of Darren. As he processes what happened and considers his feelings for Chelsea, Justin becomes more honest about his motivations and why he “rejected” Chelsea seven years prior. At times, however, it seems that the plot relies too heavily on Darren’s tragedy since he is, in many ways, a peripheral character.
This Time is filled with mostly memorable characters who actually add to the story instead of being filler. Even the distant Randi, Chelsea’s roommate in Los Angeles, is given appropriate background and is a key advisor for her. The presence of a few characters ended up being superfluous, such as the girlfriends of the male characters. Perhaps they will end up being more defined in later books of this series, but that development was lacking here.
The story is a departure from most contemporary romances that I’ve read in that it features a female lead who is full-figured. This has huge, negative impacts on her self-esteem and influences how she views the relationship she has with Justin. Chelsea put a lot of time building up emotional walls resulting from the death of her mother, estranged relationships with her siblings, and failed relationships. Justin’s attempts at rekindling with her generally left her feeling confused and suspicious. Justin’s character clearly loved Chelsea’s curves and seemed to have to jump through endless hoops to convince her of that. I appreciated that this was an honest exploration of someone’s insecurities, but sometimes felt it was emphasized too much.
Another noticeable departure for this book is that while Darren and Justin are owners of a lucrative prosthetic limb business, they seem more down-to-earth than most affluent characters found in contemporary romance. Their success is not skirted in the book, but the two are extremely humble about their accomplishments and have stayed grounded in their family. The author did a solid job of conveying this business acumen while not making it a central aspect of the story or either man’s identity.
The book has a lot of humorous moments, most of which stem from the sexual proclivities (and in some cases perversions) of the characters. I especially enjoyed the banter between the grandmothers and other mother figures at the bachelorette party. Chelsea and Justin’s quips are also light-hearted and keep their emotionally charged interactions from making the story too heavy. The interactions are carried on with nearly all of the other characters; the author’s ability to convey their closeness and comfort with one another with clever dialogue added tremendously to the different scenes.
From an aesthetic standpoint, I didn’t care for the cover. The inclusion of the description on the front made it seem like more of an ad poster than a book cover. That being said, it does fit with the plot of the story. Coming back to the book and seeing “Chelsea” grimacing on the cover was usually an accurate depiction of her in the book.
Overall, this was an easy, engaging read. The pacing is spot-on and kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. I’m pleased to know that it’s part of a series and look forward to reading what happens next for Justin and Chelsea’s relationship.
I have been waiting for this book to come out ever since Trish mentioned the idea of writing a spin-off for Justin Jacobs, who just so happens to be a kick-ass character and one of my favorite people in Like You Mean It. I always thought that as much as I loved Like You Mean It, I wanted more screen time for Justin. Now, I got exactly what I wanted.
This Time picks up seven years after everything that happened in Like You Mean It. It was a little more time than I would've liked, however, by the end of the book, I saw why it had to be like this. We follow the story in Chelsea and Justin's POV, and I gotta admit I really dug that. I liked knowing what each of them were thinking, especially because just like Chelsea, I can be a little insecure. I know how hot and gorgeous Justin is (that isn't all there is too him, he's a character with layers, and I love that about him), so it can be a little intimidating. Although Chelsea on her end could be intimidating too. They're both characters with strong attitudes. It's one of the main things I love about Chelsea. Even though Justin is tough too, I loved that he was able to take a step down a few times. Chelsea is definitely great at taking control;)
When I first heard of the idea of Justin having his own book, I never in a million years pictured he would go back to Chelsea. Not that they dated or anything, but they have history--history that stings in my heart every time I think about it. I loved the reassurance I felt from Justin's character (a lot of the time, I'm all about reassurance--I can be insecure, especially with characters). I can see clearly why Chelsea was on the fence not only with seeing Justin for the first time in years, but also for being scared as to how things would play out between them or if Justin would even care.
I cringed at the thought of there being another woman that would give Chelsea competition for Justin's heart. Chelsea seemed a bit scared with what was already happening, I'm really happy Justin gave her no other reason to worry.
I LOVED This Time. I didn't want it to end. I read it in just a few hours and I wanted more. I already can't wait for the next book in the series. I'm excited for both Chelsea and Justin. I was so happy to see my other favorites in the series, like Gerald and Marcy. Heck, I even warmed up to Nick. Once again, Nick was a character that I hardly noticed in Like You Mean It. The times I did know he was there, he annoyed me (no matter how cute Marcy thought he was). Now, it was really refreshing to read about him in this different light. Gah, I can't even put to words how excited I am for this series. I already want to continue reading about Chelsea and Justin! Loved loved loved this book, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to have fun reading a funny, witty, sexy story about two very awesome, strong, and lovable characters!
I was provided a copy of This Time by Trish Edmisten in exchange for an honest review. I would like to thank her for the opportunity. The starting paragraph was enough for me to know I was going to like this book. "Being a bridesmaid sucked. Being a fat bridesmaid was worse than having a root canal. Being the only fat bridesmaid in the wedding party was worse than having a root canal with no Novocain."
We meet Chelsea who is a wonderfully sarcastic and vibrant BBW, who has some major self esteem issues. She is on her way to be in her old high school BFF's Wedding. She is dreading it for one main reason, Justin Jacobs, the grooms brother. Her high school crush who rejected and humiliated her 7 long years ago. Justin who is a gorgeous hunk of a man and an extremely wealthy and successful business owner is feeling lonely since his little bro is getting married. He is wanting to settle down but just hasn't found that misses right. Mix this this two together and you get a lot of sexual tension, misunderstandings, steamy sex, with great banter and an entertaining story. This book is the start to a series and we are left with a cliffhanger. Will they? Won't they? I can't wait to read the next book, Next Time....Sara
This book is the first in a 4-part series and features characters introduced in the book “Like You Mean It”. Although it can be read without first reading “Like You Mean It”, it is much more enjoyable if you do, as it also features other characters from “Like You Mean It” and it is a chance to see how they are doing. The book ends with the possibility for a HEA, so you can either choose to leave it at that, but it’s worth it to read the next books in the series. Justin and Chelsea are a couple that have a lot of issues to overcome. Justin spent years being everything to his brother and he now wants something for himself. Chelsea is full of insecurities and constantly doubts Justin’s sincerity. Although they argue a lot, this is not one of those stories were the main couple hate each other to the very end and then on the last page decide they love each other after all. They relationship is turbulent and hot, but also sweet at times. Once it ends, you can’t wait for the next instalment.
I had a little trouble getting over the hate date so fast. I thought Justin was an idiot but I couldn't hold a grudge with such hate for seven years. She asked him to take her to her prom, he says no and bam she dislikes him big time. The description that continued of Chelsea made me so sad. Ok she was a size what? 12 Whatever but she made references to not even looking at herself. There are things said that made me sick. I was bummed about it. The other characters had a lit a meat to them too. I liked Justin and his family a lot. I'm including their prosthetics business here because it was a giving workplace with a unique story behind it. I wanted to love it but overall it's a 3.5 star book for me.
I absolutely loved this book! I cannot wait to continue on with the series and find out more about Justin and Chelsea's romance. I was captivated from the first chapter and couldn't put it down. The female characters are strong but still have a hint of femininity and vulnerability that makes them believable. I am excited to continue on!
