Journalist Abraham Hart’s life is unravelling. His wife has left him, his teenage daughter won’t speak to him, and his career is teetering on the brink of ruin. Seeking a clean slate he returns to his hometown of Southend-on-Sea, but after becoming involved in a young girl’s mysterious death, he sets off a dangerous chain of events which draws him into the clandestine world of organised crime.

As he attempts to unravel the twisted threads of deceit, he finds himself facing familial betrayal, police scrutiny, and an organised crime group that will stop at nothing to protect its secrets.

In his battle for answers Abraham must navigate the pain of his own past and the treacherous waters of the present, but will his quest for redemption become a descent into darkness?

I've always got a soft spot for a flawed protagonist, I enjoy these kind of investigative thrillers, and to have this all take place in the town I grew up in was a real treat! Max Elwood's debut novel is an interesting read with enough intruige, deception and layers to keep the pages turning - I'm interested to see where this character goes in future books.

A simple poolside or holiday page turner, especially for those with any kind of link to sunny Southend!! The shifts in timeline made the story jerk in terms of flow, with perhaps a touch of unneeded repetition. But a fair murder mystery.
