Beyond the Blue Horizon is book 4 in the Moonlit Ridge series
MMC Theo comes upon FMC Piper after her car spun out on the ice. Theo helps Piper, her son Finn and grandmother Nelly, and has them stay in a cabin at his motel. Piper is resistant to Theo's constant assistance, used to handling everything on her own. She quickly realizes that not only is it nice to have someone anticipate her needs so well, but also that Theo is not going to leaver her be. Theo continues to tell himself that he cannot get too close to Piper and her family, even as he is drawn to them like a moth to flame. Both Piper and Theo refuse to get close to someone, yet neither of them can stay away. They both have secrets they are afraid of the other finding out about, will their desire for each other be enough to overcome the demons of their past?
This story is less of a slow burn but an extremely slow reveal of the secrets that Theo and Piper are holding. I was so intrigued to find out what happened to them both, and the slow reveal was just torture! (in a good way) Both characters are immediately drawn to each other, and the sparks fly even the first night that Theo brings Piper and her family to The Sanctuary motel. Neither of them can fight it for very long. I love Piper's grandma Nelly, she is a feisty lady, and really encourages Piper to take advantage of Theo. Nelly also convinces Piper to stick around Moonlit Ridge, as she is tired of running. Piper warily agrees, and gets a job at Emery's clothing boutique, where she is immediately adopted into the Sovereign Sanctum's girls club. Raven invites Piper and Finn for a fun playdate with Maci and Nolan, Piper agrees but is again hesitant to get close to these people that have treated her so well. It would be so hard to trust anyone after what Piper has been through, but she finally allows herself to try and make a home for Finn, who needs stability in his life. And Theo, he was done for the second he opened Piper's car door after her crash. He tries so hard to fight his feelings, but he truly deserves happiness.
As I said, Theo and Piper have a semi-slow burn, but they really cannot resist each other for long, and then the spice kicks in!
The whole story leads up to the big secret reveal, where both Theo and Piper's past catches up with them. Neither of them will go down without a fight, and the Sovereign Sanctum is always there to defend those who need it most.
My only complaint (don't hate me) is that the profound, out of this world love language is slightly overdone (in my opinion). I know that is the writing style, and I do love it, I just think it loses a little bit of its luster when it is used in almost every chapter. But, I still love the book and the writing overall, and I love the deep, intense way the character's think, just not necessarily with every single time they have a thought.
Some Fav Quotes:
"Never claimed not to be a sadistic bastard."
"This woman was stunning. The kind of exquisite that could cut through every roughened layer of a hardened man. Crack him wide open and make him believe there might be a chance of beautiful things. Too bad I had the propensity of destroying the beautiful."
"The man was written in menace and peril. A dangerous type of beauty that compelled. A magnet that would suck you into an abyss before you even realized what hit you. The last thing I needed was a dark, intimidating knight, and there he was, running around like it was his duty to save us."
"Everything about the man felt like depraved, malicious persuasion. And I had the very foolish sense that I wanted to drag my fingers through it."
"The way I'd wanted to crawl for her like a needy, pathetic puppy when I'd seen her standing outside The Sanctuary's lobby."
""Love that sound. Your voice that I can't get out of my mind. Haunting me night and day. Want to hear it moaning my name. Want to hear it on repeat as I make you come again and again. Want to hear it playing like a song as I write myself so deep in you that I'm the only thing you can feel.""
"I wanted him to mark me. Claim me. Ruin me. Because that's what I'd be. Ruined."
""Your interest in me is verging on obsessed." I tossed it out like an accusation. "You say that like it's a bad thing." His voice did that grunting, rasping thing. A shiver zipped down my spine."
""Only girl sitting on the back of my bike is mine.""
""You are every horizon. Every destination. You are the air I breathe and the ground beneath my feet. And because of you, this dead heart beats.""
