Hope is like death...grim...silent, and then it suddenly falls upon you.

The gantz teams from all over japan take a stand against the alien invasion, i mean who would have thought that we would go from death matches to alien invasion!
Gantz is by far the ultimate sci-fi experience!

Stunning!
The global invasion begins with the slaughter of the population of Japan by skyscraper sized alien in mecha/ kaiju suits. The Gantz team without the omniscient orb is backed into a corner and has to fight for all they hold dear.
The tension is palpable and the art retains its consistent fantastical brutal realism. Gambarimas!

So the Gantz game has been essentially a training mission to handle the invasion by the aliens, who have destroyed America, and now are landing all over Japan. The carnage is on a massive scale now, and the various Gantz team members are separated, battling either on their own, or in pairs. The same themes run through the book, as the rest of the volumes, i.e. "To the very end! Just try to kill me! I will survive!" which just goes to show how the writing in this series is not all that good. The artwork is excellent, but it can be very difficult to tell what is actually happening. I found myself turning pages pretty rapidly, just kind of allowing it to wash over me, since dialog is not particularly important. I still find the overabundance of sounds effects to be annoying, especially when the artwork is swamped by the "Roooar"s and "Kaboom"s.
And yet, I'm still giving it 3 stars (really about 2.5) cause it's just entertaining enough to keep me hanging on.

Does humanity really needs to be saved? Although this series is awesome, it makes you think if we had the same technology of those aliens, perhaps we'd be the ones invading other worlds... Too much thinking! Let's move to the other volume!

This is a review of the entire series.

Synopsis: Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono, among others, who die but find themselves brought back in perfectly healthy bodies and forced to participate in a "game" where they must hunt down and kill aliens.

Review: I almost gave up on Gantz several times, but now that I've read it all the way to the end, I'm glad I stuck with it. The beginning is dragged down by repulsive and unlikable characters, a messily paced story, unnecessary sexualization and gratuitous violence without much substance. As it progresses, however, the character development becomes pretty incredible and the growing threat of the enemies feels truly well done. Once the real enemies are revealed, it's mind-blowing how the series had been secretly foreshadowing their arrival from the very beginning.

Although it takes a while, some really good characters are introduced later on in the series and they're the ones that made me want to read to the end. Some characters that were absolutely unbearable in the beginning became polar opposites of their original selves and even made me sympathize with them quite a bit. The protagonist Kei for example, I hated him with all my heart for the first third of the series, he became progressively more likable in the second third of the story and then he evolved into one of the most memorable, unlikely heroes I've ever seen in this storytelling medium throughout the final third. The last third of the series is unbelievably terrifying with some of the most gruesome and disgusting battle/survival scenes in the history of fiction. It's much more bearable and intense in the final third because this time the violence and horror is happening to people we actually care about instead of a bunch of unlikable nobodies.

The final third of the story is what made me feel so glad that I didn't give up on this series. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can recall. There are a ton of chapters but they're very short and full of action which makes the series a quick read despite having almost 400 chapters. So even though the first third of the story was kinda bad in my opinion, it doesn't last for long and the payoff that comes after it's over truly impressed me. It's a flawed, thrilling and horrifying action series that takes a while to kick off. When it finally kicks off, however, it kicks off extremely hard.

And it begins. Invasion on a global scale and rampant slaughter and destruction. Major nations have been destroyed (off-screen of course) and Japan is next. To be honest, one of the reasons why this mange is a page turner is because there's actually not much to read. Most of the panels are just sound effects. Any dialogue there is, is mostly repeated. Kurono and Tae and his belief that he will survive, Katou and his brother, etc. I think the author had fun depicting famous landmarks and dialing up the destruction and death.

I liked this episode of Gantz and there is quite a lot of action but it has less dialogue than a spaghetti western. Really. Gantz is the story of recently dead people who return to fight aliens and in this one the aliens are huge and overwhelming. It is a terrific graphic novel series.

This legit made my heart race. Sure, the series is bloody and scary since the beginning, but since the previous volume, it made me feel real fear. This is simply terrifying. Wtf.

Buenas escenas, buenas peleas.
