The Protege by Mark Williams is very well written. It flows smoothly without "jerking" transitions. There is nothing worse than reading a book and feeling like it starts and stops repeatedly and quickly creating a jerking feeling. This book is well written by an author who is talented enough to not allow that to happen. This book is a nice smooth read.
I read all genres of books to prevent becoming bored or stagnate. I do not want to limit myself either. I want to remain open to learning new things by reading anything. So reading this book was not something I would select to read.
I rate books mainly by the first few pages. A book must grab my attention and hold it in those initial pages. The words have to be capable of making me want to keep reading to know more. The Protege did this. I wanted to know more about Big
Milwaukee as well as Charlie.
The Protege deals with pool tournaments. This is a subject I knew very little about so I was educated as I read. I was transported into a world I knew almost almost nothing about. The words painted the new reality I entered into for the few days it took me to read the book. It was a unique world I looked forward to reentering each time I had time to read it.
The is not a book I would normally buy or read because I am not interested in the world of pool tournaments, but this book was entertaining. It was a totally unique subject matter for me.
I would label it more for men than women. This is not a sweet easy read. It is a page turning, edge of you seat, nail biting type of book.A book that you makes you think about it even when you aren't actively reading it.
It would make a brilliant selection for mixed gender reading groups because it will satisfy men. It contains so many possible discussion topics---goodness!!! So easy to talk about pool, the mafia, murder, proteges & mentors.
I hope everyone who reads this book enjoys it.
