In addition to his own works, Dima has collaborated on a number of romance novels with his wife, Anna Zaires. The Krinar Chronicles, an erotic science fiction series, has been a bestseller in its categories and has been recognized by the likes of Marie Claire and Woman’s Day. If you like erotic romance with a unique plot, please feel free to check it out, especially since the first book in the series (Close Liaisons) is available for free everywhere. Keep in mind, though, Dima Zales's books are going to be much more PG 13 . . . at least that’s the plan for now.

Anna Zaires is the love of his life and a huge inspiration in every aspect of his writing. She definitely adds her magic touch to anything Dima creates, and the books would not be the same without her. This is the second book of a series which started with The Sorcery Code, still kind of an insider tip in the world of fantasy literature. The book begins where the last book left off, at the end of the battle between Barson's man and Gala. Gala fought off the Sorcerer Guard, but due to pity for them, she heals those she still can, Barson among them.

In Turingrad the story about Blaise’s creation killing the Sorcerer’s Guard spreads and Barson uses it to his advantage that everyone thinks he’s dead. Augusta, also believing her „lover“ (charming, the way she thinks of him, although they mainly do have a very carnal way of interacting with one another) to be dead, succeeds in convincing the of going after "Blaise's creature".

Blaise and Gala (together with Maya and Esther) fly to the distant mountains to hide there. To their surprise they stumble upon a whole community living in the forests. They obviously weren't content with their living situations anymore or were persecuted and use the forest as a hideout.

From this point we follow 3 separate storylines. Gala and Blaise, who get closer and closer to each other while Gala is rapidly improving her magical skills and actually surpassing Blaise in her powers and abilities.

Secondly we have Augusta's storyline, also from her POV. She's still on a crusade against Blaise and his "abomination" and is decided to get Gala killed.

And thirdly we are witnessing Barson's quest for overthrowing the Sorcerer's and seizing power...figuratively trampling down a lot of people on the way.

Well, it's hard to say. I have to admit that this volume lacks a bit of the drive found in the first book. Blaise and Gala, I am afraid to say, annoyed the hell out of me most of the time. Blaise is blind with love and amazed about what Gala is able to do. We mostly have him an Gala as a package. I really liked Blaise in the first book for his motifs and his drive and he was a distinct and interesting character. Noe we mostly have him as a lovestruck fool, drooling over Gala. Although that is not so fair, there are some short sequences where he is his old self. But overall I missed an edge to his character.

However Gala’s progress in magic is so fast and forceful that you really begin to see Augusta’s point about her being a danger to others. I don’t know where the author is going, but he could definitely trying to draw the reader into another direction without noticing. Gala is not the helpless, naked creature that landed on a carpet anymore, but still I think her character is missing some development, to me she is still so naive and colorless I would like to smack her in the head…

The book was a bit slow, but gathered pace at about halfway through. From there it got pretty good again and we finally see some action. We witness a kind of terrifying fight and it is pretty neat how Zales shows us the extent of Gala’s power, what she will do to get what she wants (even if it is just protecting Blaise) and how weak her control over her immense power still is.Thus we see the other side in a different light, trying to get rid of Gala for obvious and perhaps now a bit more understandable reasons. I was thinking along those lines, too, that Blaise is obviously too smitten with Gala for seeing what she really is. It still comes down to looks mostly, which is pretty superficial. Would he have been really so much in love with her so fast, if not a blonde, long-legged supermodel had landed on his living-room floor, but some Moaning Myrtle?

So we still not really know what to make of Gala. Blaise goes far beyond normal boundaries to protect her and ends up understanding the Spell Realm more than he might have wished.
While Blaise and Gala are happy studying the elements of Magic together, Barson rips apart the society…

Of course, although pretty slow at first, the book was way too short in the end, and of course we are left off with a cliffhanger.

There will be a 3rd book, but there is no rumor as to when it will be out. I am guessing at Summer 2015…I’ll keep you posted!

I enjoyed reading The Spell Realm (sequel to The Sorcery Code) very much. The story’s pace is fast and for my taste also far too short. But I’d like it better without this sort of prologue and epilogue because I can’t really see how it’s relevant for the story. You see, the prologue and the epilogue are written of Dranel’s point of view. As described in the book, Dranel is an intelligent being that lives in the Spell Realm itself and has no essential role in this book (I guess there will be an explanation in the sequel to The Spell Realm). I guess the author uses Dranel’s POV as a way to explain the Spell Realm better but for me, it’s still quite confusing. At a later point of the story Gala pictured the Spell Realm too, which was far better done and I have a vivid idea of it now. I also liked that the special language, the sorcerers use to cause spells, was well declared. In my opinion it’s what makes this series so interesting to read. After all, the author initiated a probably unique way to do magic. I’ve never heard of any other book, which combines science, especially mathematics, and magic so well.

But it’s not only the magic which makes this book outstanding. I love that there aren’t any stereotype villains. All main characters want to accomplish their own goal and therefore try to manipulate others and many intrigues are schemed. I also find myself caring for Augusta because I understand her motives. Besides her jealousy of Gala, I see why she fears the creature, as Augusta refers to Gala. Gala holds a power no other sorcerer could compete with, and which she couldn’t even control herself, which is why people see her as a threat. This deals with a very natural fear of human nature, the fear of the unknown. So, after Gala messed up with her powers in The Sorcery Code in self defense, the Council’s actions are comprehensible. Another good improvement is Gala’s character herself. While she was very naïve and self-centered in the first book, she now realizes that her actions have consequences (for herself and those she cares about) and that she can’t always do what she wants and when she wants. Barson’s plotting was also exciting to read about and it will be even more thrilling in the sequel.

Although, I like Gala’s and Blaise’s character in general, I honestly dislike them being together, as in falling in love with each other. I wasn’t a fan of that in the first book either but back than it was easier to endure because they were separated most of the time and Gala was also new to the world and hadn’t had interacted with any other men then. Besides the fact that they are both intelligent, fascinated by magic and physically attracted to each other, their relationship seems forced and rushed at the same time. I’m sorry to say this but I can’t pinpoint the mistake why their love doesn’t convince me.

Finally, I get to the ending of this book (without spoilers, I promise). I will make this short and simple. I was so so so unsatisfied with the ending and I’m craving for the sequel right now! Before you read this book you should prepare yourself for unfinished storylines. Would it really have been so hard to add one or two chapters to at least resolve some of the unfinished business? This ending left me with so much frustration like I would be in the desert in need of water and the only water is enclosed in an indestructible box and someone took its key out of my hand and smashed it right before my eyes. Okay, that was a little melodramatic but for a short time I really felt like that.

Adequate Sequel to the Sorcery Code, Although a Bit of a Letdown

I originally purchased the first book in the series as part of Legends: 15 Tales of Sword and Sorcery which was a great purchase for $0.99. The first book was intriguing enough to purchase the second book, although I found the sequel to be a bit of a letdown. The book continues the concept of telling the story from multiple characters' viewpoints which helps keep the story exciting. Again, I don't think it would be as successful if it was written as a 1st person story. Spell Realm has a hint of Game of Thrones to it with multiple characters vying to take over power of the realm, but thankfully Spell Realm is without the absolute chaos and brutality to it. I wasn't a fan of the twist at the end. It did feel incomplete and although the ending has a unique twist to it that could potentially be interesting if book 3 was ever published; it's not published to date, so leaving a series hanging without a conclusion is another letdown. Even if another book was published, I don't think I would necessarily purchase it.

I enjoyed this book but not as much as I enjoyed the first one.

This book took a while to pick up and get exciting. Once the action got started I could not put the book down, I loved the second half of the book

I truly enjoy the picture that is vivid in my head as I read. The whole idea behind spells and there being intricate math involved makes much more sense that the Harry Potter type of sorcery.

Gala is a little more likeable in this book, in my opinion. Blaise is learning new things about who truly betrayed him. Augusta seems to be losing sight of the bigger picture as she is obsessed with destroying Gala. Barson is one of the smartest characters beside not being a sorcerer. He is truly calculating and methodical.

While the Council focuses on Gala. Barson uses their distractions as an advantage to plan and take over Klondun.

Loved the ending. I am curious if Dranel is who I think he is. . .

In an attempt to create an intelligent magical object Blaise has created Gala. His ex-finace thinks it is an abomination.

Blaise and Gala are attempting to hide in the mountains. They're helping the settlement of Alania while they're there. Augusta is convincing the council to eliminate Gala. There is intrigue within the council. Barson has his own plans.

I love the Blaise and Gala characters. The writing is fantastic. It is so smooth that with no work I was done. I would give it five stars, but I have to take off a smidge, because it's open ended, say 4.8 stars. What is the fate of the council, of Augusta, of Ganir? Are the common people going to be better off? In the epilogue there's a teaser that an entity from the spell realm might do something to the physical realm. Cut off magic or worse. I still enjoyed it.

I enjoyed this book which carried on the stories of Gala and Blaise and Barson and Augusta right up till just near the end.
The story tells how Gala and Blaise flee and how Augusta is hell bent on destroying Blaises’s “monster” while Barson is planning his own coup to become King.
The characters that are newly introduced are interesting and well rounded apart from the creature in the other dimension-he was too vague. I think this was to make him more intriguing but it was just frustrating for me.
So the end wasn’t a cliff hanger in the normal sense because it actually retracted from the readers wish to read the next book.
I still looked for the next book to give the writer a chance to redeem himself but couldn’t find it up till now.
I read this book in German.

Emily Durante's narrative style is in many ways an ideal to uphold, and an absolute pleasure to the listener. She strikes the perfect balance between a neutral tonality for the narrator, and a diverse spectrum of emotions and modulation for the various characters. All the subtle variations that she manages in order to portray the different lead characters, you feel Durante herself coming through unlike audio-books where the narrator tries too hard to create too big of a distinction among characters' voices, sounding fake and forced. In the first part, we see significant changes in Gala's understanding of this world, as she accumulates experience and exposure to wondrous and incredibly trying situations. In this second installment, that journey continues as she is tested again and again, as she becomes familiar with new emotions, and discovers newfound ambition. Barson takes on a much more central role in this book. Right at the start, his flawed genius draws us, as we see Barson turning the calamity of the battle and the ensuing disturbance in the kingdom to his advantage, driven by his with naive ambition and hubris.

Durante brought with her voice a distinctive extra element, that I couldn't quite put my finger on, but it positively added to my experience. She set the mood brilliantly for each scene - whether a sombre one between Augusta and the councilmen, a sensuous one between Gala and Blaise, or one filled with deviousness between Barson and Larn. This is a narrative that shifts among the points of view of the lead characters, and Durante does a great job of exploring the subtle changes in voice and expression with her vocal control and modulation. While in the first book much more attention was given to characterizing the physical and magical world that was Klodun, this book did far more in terms of exploring the depth of individual characters, their intentions, and interpersonal relationships. Will definitely come back for thirds!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Spell Realm to be better than the print version?

I personally LOVE having the audible copy of a book, as I am so busy. With audible reading the story to me, my infant son and I will be playing, or I'll be doing dishes during his nap time, and I can still enjoy "reading" a book, while getting things done around the house.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Spell Realm?

There were a lot of moments I enjoyed, but IT think the most memorable moment would be during the large storm and a giant battle. (I don't want to give away some of the best moments here.

What does Emily Durante bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She brings a voice to the characters, though not always with the same emotion or feeling I would think the author intended, it helped to separate characters a little with her inflections.

Any additional comments?

While some reviewers who posted on the first novel had issues with things such her how beautiful Gala is (for example) I was able to suspend my disbelief during several scenes and truly enjoyed the storyline. We are left hanging a little with dabbles of a promise of more to come, so I hope that there will be a third story in this series!!!

Definitely Worth the Wait, Just As Enchanting As Volume 1

I really enjoyed the first book of this series by Dima Zales and Anna Zaires, The Sorcery Code, and so I was very excited when the second book came out. Once again, I was completely satisfied with the story, the authors, and the narrator. And, once again, I will be eagerly awaiting the next book in this series!
The story line of The Spell Realm begins right where it left off in The Sorcery Code, and the characters all are the same people we came to know and adore in the first story. I was very happy about that since sometimes; authors decide to take the characters in entirely new directions of personality in sequels. I was also happy to find that Emily Durante was the narrator for this second book because I loved her use of voice in the first volume. Emily perfectly captures the personality elements for each of the characters, and through her, we are right there with Blaise, Gala, and all the others as they make their way in this wonderful world of magic and mystique.
If you haven’t read, or listened to The Spell Realm yet, I suggest you do so as soon as you can. You won’t be disappointed, but you will be surprised!

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and had high hopes for the sequel. I was not disappointed.

The story picked up pretty smoothly from where The Sorcery Code left off, and even though it had been a while since I finished the first book, I was able to jump right into this one. The familiar characters are back, along with a new face or two, but I won't spoil that surprise. The authors did a really nice job of continuing to flesh out the characters while keeping the story going with plenty of action and intrigue.

For some reason, I enjoyed the narration by Emily Durante much more with this book. Maybe I just needed to get used to her voice, but I thought she did a better job with this book than she did with the first one.

Thank you, Dima Zales, Anna Zaires and Emily Durante for creating another action packed, fun filled fantasy which includes some ideas not explored very often in the genre. I would definitely recommend this book and its predecessor to any fantasy lover!

I was really looking forward to reading this sequel to The Sorcery Code. The story had me glued every step of the way till the end. This 2nd volume, The Spell Realm doesn’t disappoint. It takes off where The Sorcery Code ends. I was enthralled with the narrative description of the Spell Realm, and the authors continued to give life to the main characters with more action and intrigue as they try to keep the balance of the Physical Realm and the Spell Realm. Emily Durante kept the story alive with her engaging rendition of each of the characters’ voices and painted the imagery of the fantasy worlds. I liked her voice better in this 2nd book. Her voice has the quality that evokes a spectrum of emotions for each character, unlike other narrators that try too hard to differentiate voices sounding faked and forced as a result. The Spell Realm is truly a story for every fantasy lover like me. A definite MUST and highly recommended book!"

Even better than the first book, The Spell Realm feels more comfortable with the characters who are deeper and even more relatable than before. This time, the book earns a permanent place in my wheelhouse by hinting at real world, modern, advanced physics and connecting that world view to the magic and fantasy of the story. Through Gala's eyes we see how enchanting and wonderful magic and science together really are. This is purely a personal connection, but the story moves from a passing mention of modern science to a glimpse of philosophy (hopefully without giving too much away here). The time that Blaise and Gala spend in Spell Realm could, from some points of view, be a seen as a breathtakingly beautiful analogy for life after death and other such esoterica.

All in all, The Spell Realm is an artful, satisfying continuation to adventure begun in The Sorcery Code. I'm looking forward to reading more!

I was very eagerly awaiting the sequel to The Sorcery Code by Dima Zales, and I have to say that I wasn’t disappointed. The story picks up exactly as I had wanted it to, and I was left feeling as though I had to keep listening to hear what would happen next. All of the elements that I love about a story can be found in this series. Great characters that you want to scheme along with. Exciting plot that keeps you on the edge wondering what each character is going to do next. Fantastic imagery that helps put you into the story. The fantasy elements add just the right touch without taking away from the story itself. Overall, this is a series I suggest that anyone loves a good story should pick up as this has a little bit of everything. Romance, revenge, intrigue are all intertwined throughout the story that keeps it anything but boring.

I just finished The Sorcery Code last week, and I just had to read the sequel immediately! The Spell Realm is, in every respect, a worthy sequel and a great addition to any fantasy fan’s library. I don’t want to spoil anything, but this book is packed with action, fantastic worlds, and political intrigue. The authors Dima Zales and Anna Zaires also greatly expanded on the universe that they’ve previously built in this series. They introduce some interesting and thought provoking concepts that are rarely touched upon in the fantasy genre (in my experience, anyways). Emily Durante really gives life and livelihood to the world. She does an excellent job giving a unique personality to each and every one of the large cast of complex characters. I highly recommend this book to any fantasy fan who's looking for great read!

I really enjoyed this book, Blaise & Gala had gone to the mountains to get away from the other sourceres. When they found them Gala try to do everything to keep Blaise safe but Augusta had managed to make a spell on Blaise that force Gala to go back to the Spell Realm or Blaise would die if she didn't. In the mean time Baron Augustas lover & leader of the gaurds managed to take over the tower & destroy all the saurceres that were left behind & he bacame the King. when Blaise realised what Augusta had done to Gala he made a spell to go into the Spell Realm & bring Gala back safely. I hope there's another book because it seems that the story is not finished because we don't no if Blaise & Gala made it back safe & also what happenes to Augusta after the spell that Blaise put on her before he left to rescue Gala.

I've enjoyed the first two books in this series very much. The characters are memorable enough that hopefully I will remember the storyline when book 3 is published. I know I'm probably in the minority but I really prefer to wait until an entire series is out before reading it so I can read all the books in sequential order without interruption. I'm anxious to find out if Gala and Blaise are able to escape from where they find themselves. Augusta and her bloodthirsty lover will hopefully be dealt with. I have a theory as to what might happen but I don't like to publish spoilers or ideas that others may not have thought about.

I loved every chapter of this great sequel of the unique fantasy by Dima Zales. As I expected I was not disapointed - the fast-paced tempo, the unexpected turn of events and the great characters that I have grown to love so much were as best as ever. I recommend this book to all fantasy fans - it is a great experience and you will not regret your choice. First of all, this is a romance novel with fantasy elements. If you approach it from that mindset, you will not be disappointed. However, if you are expecting a fantasy novel that ranks with the likes of Pratchett or Hickman, you will be very disappointed. Having read the first book, I knew what I was in for. As a romance novel, it is great. The love/hate relationship between Augusta and Blaise is full of sparks and treachery. There is one really exciting battle scene that had me on the edge of my seat. I am looking forward to the final book in the series.

I liked the part when Blaise and the hunters came up against these hybrid wolf bears. The wolf bears lead them into an ambush. Blaise saved the day by using sorcery. He throws a fireball at one of the hybrids. He also does mirror spell that makes the hybrids think they are seeing another pack of hybrids.

I did want to sit and listen to this book in one sitting. If I had the time I would have sat and listened to the book in one sitting.

I would say the story line of these sequel picks up very smoothly where it ended for the first one. Emily Durante was brilliant as before, however I found the story less engaging compared to its prequel. I heard the book from audible in my car audio on a long trip to LA. I got the book now. Hope I would like it more while reading.

I would definitely recommend the book to everyone who love fantasy genre in general.

I loved this story even better than the first book in the series. This is turning out to be one of my absolute favorite series. The concept of the spell realm and how the author describes it is fascinating to me and there is never a dull moment in the story. I really like the two main characters, Blaise and Gala. The story ended in a cliff hanger and I can’t wait to see what happens next. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before the next story is published.
