Sterek Casting spells, chasing monsters, wooing your coworkers and fucking them in their offices - it's all in a day's work for Stiles Stilinski. Words:43593 complete
I anticipated this starting out as a fun romp where these 2 playfully indulge in each other but what I got was a pretty well fleshed out werewolf AU that was a bit heavier than expected.
Stiles is a witch. A witch who's a cop and who has made it his mission to snag the enigmatic broody detective, Derek. He's all for some fun and not interested in anything serious. Here, Stiles is confident, tatted, a strong practitioner. He only does hook ups, avoiding forming any attachments due to a past painful relationship.
As we all know, Derek too has literally been burned by his own tragic relationship with Kate. He's unhappy and lonely and doesn't see any point in changing things - until he gives into temptation unexpectedly. Of course Stiles gets under his skin like no one else. He too doesn't do hook ups but that's because he knows he'd easily get attached, his possessive nature dooming him to getting his heart broken by his charismatic coworker.
So as always, having an alternating POV is a great bonus. As these two battle some supernatural crises/baddies, they develop conflicting emotions about how to handle each other. Throw in some smexy times and lots of angsty longing. On top of that, add the inevitability of being mates, and you have yourself a pretty darn good read.
Weeeelllll...I didn't like this one as much as I did down there when I originally read it.
Stiles.
It's ok now but man, most of the story I didn't even want him anywhere near Derek. I know, he didn't know everything but man, he knew enough!
I loved his magic though and his familiar. ------- Totally enjoyable. Magic!Stiles is one of my favorite story lines and man, was he magic. A little bit more angst then I normally like but I loved how it all wrapped up. Another of those fics where I wonder why I waited so long.
And a witches familiar named after a character from one of my favourite childhood movies.
This was really very good. It was also way angsty and that was mainly due to the two boys being ridiculous and not confronting issues and discussing feelz. Derek's pain was heart breaking and making me cry and 7am on a Monday morning was just mean.
Once they stopped being stupid it was great, got nice and fluffy and I loved the epilogue. This was an enjoyable AU where werewolves and magic are a part of the world. I always like them.
For some reason this reminded me a bit of a less ridiculously funny installment of Angel Martinez's Offbeat Crimes. The supernatural crimes division, and the mishmash of characters with varying degrees of magic and abilities, certainly, with Chris (here) reminiscent of Anjulie from Cole McCade's Criminal Intentions. All of which are great comparisons since I loved them both...
That said, this quite enjoyable NYC-set AU felt like it could be pulled to publish if re-worked because - other than the circumstances that reference canon Teen Wolf events, side characters and relationships (fire, Kate, the Betas, Scott/Allison, etc. ) - the characters were different enough that it could stand alone. Which is why it's only 3.5 stars. These did not feel like the Stiles and Derek from the show (or other well-written fanfic). Other than that it was a really good read!
3.5* This story has good plot. The writing style is above average and the characters are, well, being themselves. Just the last chapter seems a tad too sweet, a deviation from the rest.
Can't say I liked this. The characters felt clunky and puppet-like. There was this big fight and misunderstanding. Neither of them capable of stringing two sentences together to clear the misconception. Both of them seemingly in different places, wanting different things. Then 70% in the book, there's a switch turned on somewhere and suddenly, they don't need words anymore to explain themselves, they are both wanting the same thing.
I failed to understand why the Alpha pack would choose to kill Stiles by means of magic potion when they had claws and teeth more easily available. And at the end two things annoyed me. Stiles and Derek have sex and it's this incredible experience because they're mates. Why didn't that happen the first time they had sex but only now? And that chapter about them finding a surrogate mother? Oh so so cheesy.

Finalnie 2,75 gwiazdki.
I had a love/hate relationship with Stiles in this one. I really enjoy Magic Stiles and tattooed Magic Stiles is even better but this Stiles was rather mean and I couldn't enjoy him because of it.
This was ok but I didn't like how Stiles 'hooked up' after knowing Derek had feelings. And considering they weren't officially anything, I didn't think it right to completely blame Stiles for Derek's malaise following the incident.
This was a pretty good story. This is a Sterek fanfiction story. For those of you that don't know...Sterek fanfic is based off 2 male characters, Stiles and Derek, from the TV show Teen Wolf. In the show they're both heterosexual but some viewers have fantasized about them together in a m/m relationship and thus Sterek was born. This story wasn't set in the Teen Wolf TV show world. The paranormal exists but the story takes place in NYC where a Stiles, Derek and a number of other TV show characters work for a department in the police force that deals with the paranormal (obviously paranormal is a known thing in this reality).
Stiles is a magic user in this story and is just finishing up his Masters in Healing and Protection magic. He's also gone to the academy so he could join the police and use his powers for good. The Stiles in this story isn't exactly like the TV show Stiles...he was involved in an abusive relationship in college and because of that has a fear of relationships and avoids them at all costs. Unfortunately, he's a bit immature in his dealings with others and doesn't always take their feelings into account when it comes to relationships. This happens with Derek who is an Alpha werewolf and a detective he works with. Derek tends to be rather silent and broody so Stiles decides it'll be fun to make a project out of getting into Derek's pants. Derek is the strong silent type and tends to look broody without trying but he actually likes Stiles. He isn't good at approaching people and has been wanting to start something with Stiles but couldn't bring himself to reach out. When something finally does happen between them it ends up being a hookup and since Derek wants more it just ends up hurting him. I really felt for Derek in this and wanted so badly for things to work out for him. Their relationship drama is complicated by the work they do on the cases, including one that hits closer to home than expected and puts Stiles and Derek in danger. Thankfully they get past this and Stiles realizes his idiosy and makes things right with Derek so they end the story with a very nice HEA.
This was an enjoyable story. Stiles was a bit immature in his treatment of others at times but yet he was still a good guy with a good heart and I liked him. It was also cool seeing Stiles as a powerful magician. Derek was a good character...he was socially awkward and rather laconic like we'd expect but underneath was a sweet guy that just wanted his mate. It was nice that the story was told from both Stiles' and Derek's PoVs and overall it was pretty good. :D
3.5 stars I love magic Stiles, and I really liked this story. I think 2 things kept it from being a 4 star read for me.
1) While I like alternate settings, and I appreciate interesting world building, it took me a little time to figure this world out. Both with regards to magic's role and openness, but also how our characters all relate to each other. They're all here, but the circumstances of how everyone got here is very different.
2) I just felt like the characters weren't quite strong enough. They were all accurately represented, but they didn't have enough personality. In particular, Stiles wasn't quite Stiles enough. Yes he rambles, but not as quirky and lovable as I'm used to.
Magic!Stiles is always a pleasure and in this story, he is a very powerful practitioner, working at NYPD, together with Derek. So we have Magic!Stiles, Cop!Derek and NYC, three of my favourite things in a good Sterek. The plot is also good with an interesting mystery. Unfortunately, there were some elements that dragged it down from a 4 star read. The miscommunication, the angst, the lack of good sense...
But the sex was good. And it left me smiling in the end.
Magic!Stiles, cop!Derek, solving crimes and making each other miserable until they make each other sooper happy. Protective self-sacrificing!Derek, hurt!Stiles and hurt!Derek, owl familiar, herbs and oils and fab magic. All's well that ends well! Also a pretty damn great werewolf AU
