Since the 18th century, New Orleans has embraced their own extravagant twist on Mardi Gras celebrations. Set apart from the common revelry, the Louisiana elite host krewes, displaying wealth and power through the production of lavish balls, and stunning parades.
One such group, the Krewe of Magus, has extended invites for their ultra-exclusive fete in the Garden District. Run by the influential Deschanel family, access to From the Ashes is highly sought after, and rarely granted. Powerful alliances are formed, and deals are made. And behind the veil of silk and gold, debauchery abounds.
Slip behind the gilded curtain, and disappear into the five unique tales that make up From the Ashes…
A Cult of Personalities: Personally I found this one very strange! I don't even know where to start with it but I was confused at first until the wrap up. Stickers and Marsh-mellows??? I am not sure where that came from. Still it was written well.
Fire & Ice: I love magic users! A sister who bribes the youngest to change her looks to get a man who is engaged to someone else but still has a huge spot for this first love. A party where you wear certain colors to mean you want to hook up and for the guys to see how many woman he can have. I would love to be able to read more of this one.
Fool's Errand: Conall has to face losing the one person he has loved for hundreds of years to find peace. More questions are formed when he is sent to the ball to met the mystic now he must find what threatens them and save 'her'. This leaves you hanging looking forward to The Chronicles of Izzy
Labor of Love: Darla who is due any moment has a fear the child she carries is evil. Lucky for her, mom knows best. Her mother asked her to go to the ball in place of her while sending the man who had once proposed to Darla a message to be at the ball as well. Without a invitation Tom finds a creative way to get in side to find Darla full of child. At the ball her water breaks, Tom happened to be raised by a mid wife so he knows what to do still giving her a chance to go to the hospital or deliver there.
Heated Hearts: Leela was asked by her cousin to go to a ball in place of her since a family emergency came up. Leela invited Cale who she has been with only a month. The invitation had her cousins name on it once Cale seen that he stepped into a role and Leela didn't know if he liked her or just playing. After a drunken night after the ball and nothing happened in the morning they faced the talk. - To see how more of how things turn out need to check out Intoxicating Passion: the box set.
I enjoyed all the books and how they ended up at the Party and how they ended up. Each has there own roles to play outside of the party but as fate has worked they all ended up at the same place and possibly walked around each other without actually meeting. There are many different things going on from Humans, Magic, Shapeshifter and strange personalities all in once place.
This a great collection of 5 stories all with the same theme. They are all set around a Mardi Gras Krewe Ball. Story 1 ~ A Cult Of Personalities – Michelle Breaux-Rowley. In this story we meet Sister Idonie Belle Gilmore. She is a bit of a sleuth & works with the police to solve a mysterious “Stalker” situation for one of the main characters in the Krew Ball. This was a funny & very charming story.
Story 2 ~ Fire & Ice – Sarah M Cradit This is mainly about twins Fleur & Remy Fontenot & their little brother Theodore. They all have magical qualities & at the Krewe Ball Fleur has a plan to get with the man she desires. Remy however learns a life lesson. This had a great twist to it.
Story 3 ~ Fools Errand (Chronicles of Izzy Short) – Michelle Graves. This is about Conall, he is a Guardian & he is in emoitional turmoil. He is sent to the Krewe Ball by his mother to meet a Mystic, to learn some answers to his dialemma. I enjoyed this story & really felt for Conall. He really was in distress. He was very gracious in defeat to his mothers wishes.
Story 4 ~ Labor Of Love - Brandy L Rivers This is a story about Darla & Tomahawk from the Others of Edenton series. Darla ran away to stay with her Mother. Tom is miserable without her. They both get sent to the Krewe Ball (Darla by her Mother & Tom anonymously) I love these characters & It was great to see Darla in a whole new light & Tomahawk show his true feelings. A great little story & I loved it.
Story 5 ~ Heated Hearts – Felicia Tatum Leela Taymon is begged by her cousin Francesca, to go to the Krewe Ball & pretend to be her & talk Mr Sullivan, so that Francesca can get a job. So Leela & her new boyfriend Cale go & have a wonderful time. This was a very sweet story of new love. Leela & Cale are lovely together.
New Orleans is a place that captured my attention, my imagination, and it just won't let go. There is little that is written with New Orleans as the setting that I wont read. Although I have only been there once, and only for a long weekend, I can remember walking in the French Quarter, having breakfast at the Cafe du Monde and riding the St. Charles Avenue streetcar. I knew I had to visit this city when I played the old adventure game "Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers" back in 1993. I did finally get my chance to go to New Orleans in February 2005, just six months before the devastation of Katrina turned New Orleans into a disaster zone.
Creating an anthology around a single cohesive idea is difficult at best, and, all things considered, I would say FROM THE ASHES almost succeeds. The five stories do have the common thread of New Orleans and the Krewe of Magus Tableau and Ball, a 'by invitation only' Garden District society fete to usher in the Mardi Gras. However, for two of the stories, the theme seemed more contrivance than integral part of the narrative.
Reading an anthology such as this, containing works from five authors I have never before read, is a great introduction to the style of each.
"A Cult of Personalities," by Michele Breaux-Rowley, is an excellent venture into the theme of the anthology, and an excellent introduction to Aiden and Idonie, as unlikely a pair of sleuths you are ever likely to find. Aiden Comeaux is a New Orleans PD Detective, and Idonie is Sister Idonie Gilmore, as in 'married to Jesus,' and Aiden's cousin. Aiden is called upon to investigate a doubly sticky stalking mystery involving Krewe of Magus royalty. It is a cosy little mystery with a surprising solution that fits perfectly in a tale about New Orleans.
Although "A Cult of Personalities" is identified as an Aiden and Idonie Adventure suggests there are other works in a series, I could find no reference to them. That is disappointing because I am sorely tempted to read them.
"Fire and Ice," by Sarah M. Cradit, is another excellent introduction to the mystique that is New Orleans at Mardi Gras, and is part of the Crimson & Clover series. In "Fire and Ice" we meet Fleaur and Remy, the Fontenot twins, the rather spoiled offspring of Luther Fontenot, Captain of the Krew of Magus ball. Then there is younger brother Teddy who wants to participate in a long-standing, if somewhat deplorable game played once a year at the ball. It all seems like harmless fun, but there is more to these characters than meets the eye. I'm a sucker for the supernatural, and when it's inclusion is as subtly done as it is here, I am nothing but impressed. I look forward to reading more of the Crimson & Clover series.
This brings us to "Fool's Errand," by Michelle Graves, and identified as a Chronicles of Izzy Short. I found this to be an entirely enjoyable read but having read nothing else in this series, I felt a bit left in the dark with regard to Guardians and Seers. The story moves in a very specific direction, that fits directly into the theme of the anthology, but the reader is left to bring things to the inevitable conclusion. I must admit, the writing is good enough to convince me that I should read more Michelle Graves.
Next on the menu is "Labor of Love," by Brandy L. Rivers and our very pregnant heroine Darla who is worried her unborn child carries the taint of Izackarus. My first thought and question upon reading the beginning of this tale was is Izackarus the Izzy of the previous story. It is sometimes difficult to shake those first impressions. As I read this story, it seemed less and less likely that my first impression was correct. As with the previous two stories, there is a series, The Others of Edenton, and it is this series the narrative is meant to enhance. As a stand-alone, it leaves the reader with enough questions to pursue the rest of the story while feeling complete in and of itself. I did feel that it blended with with concept of FROM THE ASHES, but that setting wasn't really an integral part of the story.
Finally, we have "Heated Hearts," by Felicia Tatum, the shortest story and the one with the least connection to the theme. It is a story of budding romance that could be made to fit into most any theme. It too is part of a series that, in this book, is called A Sacred Hearts Short, but a quick check on Amazon, shows her series to be called Scarred Hearts. I am not a fan of the romance genre; however, a bit of romance does tend to find its way into books that fall more appropriately into other genre. "Heated Hearts" is a rather sweet story of confusion and some outright lies that work out for best for Leela and Cale.
I make it a habit to reveal as little as possible about any work I am reviewing because I would rather tempt you to read the story yourself than hand it to you, watered down, on a platter. I would honestly recommend this anthology to anyone who enjoys a bit of mystery along with a fairly large helping of paranormal, and spiced with a bit of romance. I would rate the first three stories with a solid five stars each, and the last two with a solid four stars each, which gives us a respectable 4.6 stars for the book. Rounding that up gives five stars to FROM THE ASHES.
Congratulations to Dauntless Indies on a fine first effort!
To start, all of these ladies described the Krewe ball and the surroundings amazingly. I could envision myself in the middle of Mardi Gras! This is 5 short stories by 5 different authors.
Cult of Personalities by Michele Breaux-Rowley: This has a bizarre stalker story that involves cat stickers and marshmallows! Aiden is called upon to investigate as events just continue to get more absurd. He and his cousin Sister Idonie go to the ball to help watch for the loon. Events unfold crazily until this person is found. Super fun short read.
Fire and Ice by Sarah M Cradit: This short revolves around Fleur and Remy, the Fontenot twins. The party is continued showing Krewe traditions. Both are used to getting what they want and both find themselves in compromising positions. Fleur goes after a man that she deceives to try and get a hold of. Remy tries to be the player but finds a "good girl". Things didn't work out the way they originally planned. Page turner!
Fools Errand by Michelle Graves: In this short we meet Connall on his "errand" that his mother sends him to so that he can meet the mystic. We experience the inner turmoil that he goes through while dealing with the death of Cait, his seer. The mystic provides guidance and peace so that he can move forward. This occurs before he meets Izzy in the Chronicles of Izzy. Must read as it shows why he is so cryptic with Izzy when they meet.
Labor of Love by Brandy L Rivers: Darla left Tom in a haste as she is concerned over whether her baby is tainted. She is trying to protect Tom by doing this. Both Tom and Darla are madly in love and are miserable without each other. Darla's mother goes to great lengths to have them run into each other at the ball. Luckily this works and they are able to figure their love out, bring their baby into the world, and bring their family back together. Amazing read about true love.
Heated Hearts by Felicia Tatum: Francesca begs Leela to stand in for her at the Krewe ball. Leela agrees but doesn't tell Cale everything, like they have to pretend to be Francesca and Cade. She feels like she will scare Cale off as they are a new relationship. They go to the ball and soon discover that they both have similar feelings for each other. It's a cute story about young new love.
All of these shorts have their twist. Some of these are a little hard to follow if you haven't read the series that corresponds to the short. Overall this an amazing bunch of shorts by some amazing authors!
Really liked this anthology. I loved how these all had a similar theme yet because they were written by different authors they varied yet were all good in there own way. #1- was funny, I loved the relationship between the cousins, loved the story about the phoenix, I loved the twist with the personalities. #2-liked the twins being polar opposites, but very similar to each other also, she a manipulative person and he a man-whore but I was glad that he did find a friend. #3- very quick good read matched the first two perfectly. I felt so bad for him and this book left me wanting more. #4- Love the Others of Edenton and this didn't disappoint. I was so thrilled when they reunited, they were both so unhappy without each other. #5- Such a good story. They both had feelings for one another and didn't really let the other know and then they are thrown together and realize they both are feeling the same thing.
I love each and every one of the Stories in the Anthology... New Orleans was a Great setting for these stories I have been many times since I am a Southern Louisiana Girl....I'm always intrigued with stories from my great state..
I read anthology's that seem to have nothing to do with the other... I was so glad all the stories were centered together in New Orleans around the Mardi Gras ball.. You can just imagine the stories going on at the same time at the ball.. Well except for a few of them..
Each story makes you want to dive deeper into the story line of these characters..
This anthology was well written. Each story was written by a different author but it was done so well that it all tied together perfectly that you wouldn't be able to tell. All were based off a theme and it was the Krewe Ball in New Orleans around Mardi Gras time. This book has a little for everyone.. shifters, mystery, magic, mystics, and love.. Each story made you want to know more..
From the Ashes is a very unique anthology. Each author was tasked to write a short story centered on a particular event that takes place during Mardi Gras in the mysterious city of New Orleans. The Krewe of Magus Tableau and Ball that was an ‘invitation only’ event and each author’s story had characters that were attending this ball for one reason or another.
The first story was by Michele Breaux-Rowley, titled “A Cult of Personalities”. I thought this was a great way to start the anthology. This story is a mystery and introduces us to a very odd detecting due…Detective Aide Comeaux and Sister Idonie Gilmore. Events unfold around the Krewe of Magus royalty warranting it necessary for Aiden and Idonie to attend the Ball and does the case get solved? You’ll have to read to find out! ; ) Looking forward to more Aiden and Idonie adventures in the future.
The second story is “Fire and Ice”, by Sarah Cradit. Every year the Fontenot twins attend the Ball. Fleur and Remy are up to their tricks, trying to do whatever they can go after what they want. Each with their own agenda for the evening set out for some fun and found themselves in situations that they didn’t plan for. This story was an interesting view of some of the royal characters with a paranormal flair.
Next, Michelle Graves tells the story of “Fool’s Errand”. The story is about Connall and he has been sent on a specific errand by his mother to see the Mystic. He needs to travel to the Ball to meet the Mystic and learns how he needs to proceed with his future from there. I haven’t read anything else in the series, but I would be interested in learning more about the Guardians and Seers.
“Labor of Love” by Brandy Rivers is a little bewitching tale about lovers named Darla and Tomahawk. She is pregnant with Tomahawk’s child and is deathly afraid that her baby is tainted. To protect Tom, she runs away to her mother’s home. They are both miserable without each other. Unbeknownst to them, Darla’s mother arranges for them to meet at the Ball. Will this meeting go as Darla’s mother planned?
And last, but not least…Felicia Tatum concludes the anthology with “Heated Hearts”. This charming story is about Leela and Cale. Leela’s cousin, Francesca, was scheduled to make an appearance at the Ball for business. Last minute, she begs Leela and her relatively new boyfriend. Leela and Cale travel to New Orleans to attend the ball. To see what happens at the Ball, you’ll just have to read to find out! ; )
I love hearing stories that are based in New Orleans and especially when discussing experiences that take place during Mardi Gras. I particularly love the idea of dressing up in extravagant outfits and wearing masks. The mystery in masquerade is all very seductive and dangerous. I truly enjoyed each of the stories. Thank you, Dauntless Indies! Looking forward to more in the future!
What a great anthology! Five very different authors tell five very different stories, but all are connected by one fabulous Krewe Ball!
A Cult of Personalities by Michele Breaux-Rowley Wow! What a fun first release by new author Michele Breaux-Rowley! This short is chock full of personality and laugh-out-loud humor. It’s a great introduction to Sister Idonie and her cousin Aiden, and I have it on good authority that we’ll be seeing more of those two! I can’t wait to follow their adventures and read more from this talented new author!
Fire & Ice by Sarah M. Cradit This story was a great lagniappe piece for me! As a die-hard fan of Cradit’s House of Crimson & Clover series, Fire & Ice was a welcome treat. This short shows off one of the things that, in my opinion, Cradit does best…paranormal. There are some really fun scenes involving some fascinating characters… notably siblings Fleur, Remy and Theo. We get to see some series favorites, equally as fascinating, like Anne, too! You have to love Anne! You don’t HAVE to love her, but I really wouldn’t cross her. Read Fire & Ice for more on this. ;)
Fool’s Errand by Michelle Graves This short was a great extra from another of my favorite series, The Chronicles of Izzy by Michelle Graves. Fool’s Errand highlights Conall, the eye-patch wearing hottie Guardian from the series. I appreciated the feeling in this one and just love Conall to pieces! Graves does a great job at leaving you wanting, and needing, to know more about the Seers and Guardians. If you haven’t started her series, you’re bound to once you read this one!
Labor of Love by Brandy L. Rivers What a great short from Brandy L. Rivers! Labor of Love showcases Rivers’ ability to draw you in to a story and characters quickly! Darla and Tom’s story is a sweet one and is not without Rivers’ tongue-in-cheek humor that she does so well. Anatomically correct ice sculptures, anyone? This was a fun, feel-good read that will leave you feeling satisfied.
Heated Hearts by Felicia Tatum Tatum should be proud of this one! Leela and Cale, our main characters are simply charming. They are given a fabulous opportunity for an all-expense paid trip to New Orleans and being young and spontaneous, take it. As you might imagine, they are a fun duo. Remember those anatomically correct ice sculptures? Uhh…Cale may or may not have a little fun with one of them. Tatum does a great job at building “heat” in Heated Hearts, and gives us a fun story. One suggestion for Lee…”Stay away from Voodoo Queens!”
From the Ashes is a great anthology and great way to get a taste of these 5 very talented authors! Buy it, read it, love it...you won't be sorry!!!
I received a complimenty copy of this book through Crazy Cajun Book Addicts for an honest review. This anthology was really well written and had bit of everything to keep you turning the pages. Each story is written by a different author but is all tied around the same theme The Krewe Ball in Mardi Gras time and based in New Orleans. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical whilst reading the first book let's just say a stalker that leaves stickers of cats faces and marshmallows for his victim hmm my thoughts exactly but you will understand why in the end. I am so glad I persevered as I really enjoy it if you want something with shifters, magic, mystery and love then this is the book for you.
This was 5 stories by 5 great authors. I truly loved reading these stories. They helped you go through all the emotions of the characters. I found the first one funny with the marshmellows and the cats. All these stories take place in New Orleans. Which I think it was great setting for these stories. They described each story where you can see the settings and enjoy them. These stories were very well written and the characters made it flow together. Also the personalities made it twist together. This has all the things that people look for in a read. Once you pick it uo wyou will not want to put it down. You are also left wanting more. Look forward to reading more from these authors. Recommend this book to anyone hwo loves to read.
New Orleans is a place that unless you've been here and you read about it in a book, its hard to believe in the beauty and decadence. The culture and history is truly like no other. But, the five authors captured the essence of New Orleans and Mardi Gras perfectly. In 'From the ashes' every story flourishes with descriptions of mardi gras. Decadence, humor and the allure of what new orleans is known for. These five women pulled me into the stories with a way of making me feel as if I was there among the characters. Looking in through a mask from the pages of the book. The way they weaved each story to tell one story held my attention till the very end. I look forward to what's next from these amazing women.
I received From the Ashes (A Dauntless Indies Anthology) as a gift and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the compilation of stories by each of the authors. The story is centered around the Mardi Gras Krewe Ball which is hosted by the Deschanels, a well-to-do family in Louisiana. The stories come to life not only with vivid descriptions of fantastic costumes and a glamorous ballroom, but each with its own storyline that links the characters to the Ball. Some debut with a little bit of mystique, while others with just a little bit of magic. I would recommend From the Ashes to everyone!
Took me awhile to start this book, for some reason I just couldn't get that interested in what was happening. Maybe it was that I have never read anything by these authors (other then Felicia Tatum) but I really struggled to get past the first few pages. Each of the stories would have the main character(s) somehow tie in with the party from the first story.. And although I had trouble remaining interested, I still read the whole book, and for the most part, enjoyed it.
What a great, fun filled read! I enjoyed each of the short stories in this book and look forward to additional longer works by the authors. It was a great tie in to their other books and would make the most sense if you have read other works by them, however, it won't take the reader long to figure out what is going on if they haven't read the others.
This is a 5 story anthology all with one thing linking them all together, the Krewe of Magus Tableau Ball in New Orleans. I have to give the book a 5 fang review as I enjoyed each story and how they all intertwined with the Deschanel and Sullivan clans.
A Cult of Personalities by Michele Breaux Rowley
This is the case of Harold Judson being stalked. Someone is leaving cat stickers and marshmallows, yes I said marshmallows, all over his office, car and even his home. 8n comes Detective Aiden Comeaux and his cousin Sister Idonie Gilmore to catch the stalker. The night of the ball things get really weird and the stalkers show themselves. This is a cute and funny short.
Fire & Ice by Sarah M. Cradit
Remy Fontenot and his twin sister Fleure are at the ball too. Remy to win the " King of the Great Sport" sexual conquest game. Fleure is there to seduce Clancy Sullivan, cousin of Oz Sullivan. The only problem with that is he's engaged and his real true love Anasofiya Deschanel isn't there. We find out the talents that Remy and Fleure have and Remy makes the mistake of trying to "pick up" Anne Fontaine. What follows shows the powers of the clan.
Fools Errand by Michelle Graves
Conall is a Guardian sent to the ball by his mother to talk to the Mystic. He's been depressed for over 300 years since Cait died. She was his Seer, or so he believes. The last time they fought the Darkness is when Cait died and he's been pretty much useless ever since. He's only going because of his mother and doesn't see how anything or anyone is going to help him. Once he's done talking to the Mystic he finally realizes he's dishonoring Cait's memory by no being who and what he should be. He goes home with new purpose and hopes of finding his Seer.
Labor of Love by Brandy L. Rivers
Darla is pregnant and almost due the night she goes to the ball because her mom wants her to go have fun. She has ran away from the father Tomahawk because she's afraid that the baby is tainted from the fight she had with a shadow fae before she knew she was pregnant. Tomahawk is a shifter and wants Darla back bit doesn't know she's pregnant, he doesn't know why she left. The day before the ball Tom get an anonymous gift of a plane ticket and a hotel room and is told to go to the ball to "find what he has lost." What happens when he finds Darla is a wonderful and happy ending.
Heated Heart by Felicia Tatum
Leela Taymor gets a call from her cousin Francesca begging her to go to the ball in Francesca's place and to take Leela's " boyfriend" of less than one month Cale in place of Francesca's boyfriend Cade. Leela doesn't know what Cale will think they're supposed to pretend to be a couple totally in love and they haven't even had sex yet. They go to the ball and do what Francesca wants them to do then they get drunk. What's going to happen back at the hotel??
I've never read an anthology quite like this. I initially purchased it because it has a novella from an author I love. After reading the one I wanted, I finally went back and read the entire book. Every story revolves around the Krewe of Magus From the Ashes Ball in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Not just all taking place in New Orleans but all they all converge at this particular ball. The various characters from the different books all attend the same fete for varying reasons. I feel it was extremely well done. Although the authors have different styles, they made it work. Some of the same characters are mentioned in different books, while some books have the differing points of view for the scene. Definitely a treat. I found new authors I probably would never have read but will definitely put on my TBR list.
This review is for Labor of Love by Brandy L. Rivers.
I received a copy of this book for an honest review.
This is a novellette letting us see what happened to Darla when she vanished after Izackarus’ possessed her. The love Tomahawk and Darla have for one another shines through.
This was a sweet love story and loved the small intervening that was done to help these two get back together. Tomahawk was amazing even after finding out why Darla was hiding. I loved being able to see what happened to Darla and Tomahawk. They are perfect together and work well together.
I loved that this was short, sweet and drama free. I found myself chuckling and even a little misty eyed while reading this. If you have read the other books in this series you will want to pick this one up.
Review based on Labor of Love (Others of Edenton #5.5) by Brandy L Rivers
Who doesn't love a ball, especially one where a black panther can just stride in...
Amazing short bringing Darla and Tomahawk back together. And now a bit about the story...
After Izackarus had possessed her she needed some space. But then she found out she was pregnant... Scared of what could be part of the baby she remained away. But her mom has a trick up her sleeve!
Favorite passage: “I won’t guarantee it will be perfect, but I promise to do my best.”
This was a short story collection by five authors around a central theme and location. It was interesting to see how the stories wove together but separately. I loved Fire and Ice but all the stories had their own story within a story that invited me to read more by the authors. I would recommend this as an introduction to each of these authors.
This book was interesting. How all the stories connected to one another. They all correspond with books I have already read. It was cute reading all these little novellas
