I love action adventure but it doesn't make me happy unless there are...body count, blood, and blowing things up. I play with mad skills at coding HTML and website design and live in a log cabin in the woods with fifteen acres, an old apple orchard, and a pond full of bass though I'd rather buy fish at the grocery store. I share my domain with a husband, and two cats who think I'm the waitstaff!
In this gripping prequel to Thunder , unsettling secrets change Selah Chavez's life forever in the days before her 18th Born Remembrance.
My Review:
This eShort prequel to Thunder, Book #1 in the Stone Braide Chronicles, is very quick and entertaining. I liked the setting and feel of the story. Selah's voice seemed somewhat small in Tremors, but I don't think it was necessary to flesh it out. The author can save that for Thunder!
I've wanted to read Thunder for a while now, but Tremors fully convinced me to give it a go! If you're thinking about giving it a go, too, I suggest reading this--but right before you read Thunder, as this does leaves you hanging.
This is the FREE prequel to Bonnie Calhoun's upcoming novel, Thunder. It is a very short prequel at only about 48 pages, however, I loved every page of it. Tremors is a mix of SciFi and Fantasy, which I am huge fan of anyway so I knew I'd love this story. Now all I have to do is wait until October for Thunder to be released (or until Revell send us bloggers the email for October's Releases review copies). Suffice to say I am uber stoked to continue this story.
This short novella introduces us to the fierce Selah, who is fighting against the traditions her father expects of her - mainly a marriage in which two tasks are expected of her, to be submissive to her husband and ensure his family line continues. Mere days before her 18th Remembrance Year, Selah discovers more secrets her father is keeping... and her plans to do that are about to be set in motion.
Despite not being someone who generally reads novellas (if that's all there is to a story, they're far too limiting usually), I thought this was a nice introduction to the upcoming debut novel, Thunder from Bonnie - plus it's the start of something bigger and therefore comes across more exciting than anything else. It kept a nice pace, keeps the reader invested and gives us a character who is easy to root for and invest our time in. Despite the page count on Amazon, the actual story isn't as long as it numbers up until - the rest is an excerpt of the full-length novel.
If you don't want to be left hanging, just wait until Thunder is available to you. Because we're left wondering, WHAT'S NEXT?
This is a novella leading up to Bonnie's new Dystopian release Thunder(Stone Braid Chronicles Book 1)
Selah is getting ready to turn 18, and her father is determined to marry her off to Jericho Kingston. She has dreams, which are rather like nightmares, yet they only happen when she sleeps on the beach.
The question, why does her father want her to marry Jericho? Why is this union so important and why is she unable to hunt with her brothers.
This is a short 48 page novella. I loved every page and can't wait to read Thunder.
Selah Rishon Chavez is just days from her 18th Birth Remembrance and finally being able to join her father and brothers as a hunter. Yet she soon discovers that there are secrets her family is hiding. And why are her brothers asked to keep an eye on her?
This prequel novella was a very fast read. It quickly introduced the heroine of the full novel and the reader gets to understand a little more of her family life. Yet it's not necessary to read the novella in order to enjoy the book. I did, but I didn't need to. Once I finished this, I was eager to get to the book.
The novella is currently free and I read this to enrich my reading experience of the full length. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Recommended to fans of Divergent Series, Hunger Games, Anomaly Series, dystopian, young adult
Eeeekkk!! After reading this prequel to the actual series I am beyond excited to start reading Thunder!
Bonnie told such an enrapturing story that I'm pretty sure I have as many questions about Selah's future as she does! So curious as to what is going to happen and meet some more characters!
Tremors is a prequel that not only gives you a little history before the actual novel Thunder, but also gets you prepare for an action packed novel! So very excited!
Tremors does a great job of drawing you into this story and making you want to continue on by reading Thunder. It added a bunch of questions and very little answers, but I think that is what it should have done.
This short prequel is an easy read, very interesting, and leaves a lot of questions to be answered in the upcoming book Thunder. I am very excited to read Thunder now that I have read Tremors!
Okaayy, so I didn't know there was a prequel to Thunder when I started reading it...If I had read this beforehand, I think I would have enjoyed it a little more, but what can you do lol :P
Tremors created lots of questions but not a lot of answers. it is a good hook for the first book of the series, but not necessarily a great story on its own.
If you are a fan of movies like Hunger Games, Divergent or The Giver, you just might want to pick up the prequel Tremors to what seems like will be a great new series from author Bonnie Calhoun. In this short 48 page introduction to the Stone Braide Chronicles, it does what it is supposed to do, draw you in and make you want more, much like chocolate does for me. I would classify this one as a Christian Science Fiction Fantasy and truly fans of that genre will absolutely want to begin this journey with Tremors before Thunder, the first book in the series begins early this fall.
The teaser opens with three teens who find the beach deserted at night, which provides the perfect setting for a night of surfing without the hassle of others stealing the prime waves that are slated to begin tonight. Only they truly get more than what they bargain for, when a sudden, unexpected current begins to drag them away from the shore. As the waves begin building, they don't panic at first, expecting to catch the next wave and head for shore. However when a sudden fifty-foot rogue waves appears, it will be the last thing they ever see.
Selah Rishon Charez is simply tired of being cast aside as her father and brothers scourge the coastal waters looking for "Landers." Her father has reminded her that she is to keep to the house for the next two days to keep her safe until her 18th Birth Remembrance. Her older brother warns her that it is for her safety since there have been rumors of her possibly being kidnapped before that happens. Just had hoped for some free time to work side by side with her father and brothers before being given away in a per-arranged marriage slated for 90 days after her 18 Birth Remembrance to a man she truly doesn't love, Jericho Kingston. She doesn't understand such a rush for that to happen and when she attempts to talk to her mother about it, she isn't much help. Is there a reason her father wants to keep her locked away until the wedding? Just what secrets is her father keeping from her that she has a right to know? What true purpose does her life as a girl serve in the society is which she is living? When she finds out the price her father is willing to pay for her life, she will truly be surprised at just the reasons behind him wanting to keep her safe at all costs and one she won't be happy with at all?
I received an electronic copy of Tremors by Bonnie Calhoun compliments of Revell Publishing and Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions are strictly my own. The best part is that for a limited time, you can get a copy of Tremors for your eBook reader free which also includes the first chapter of Thunder, the first novel in the Stone Braide chronicles due out early this fall. This truly does sound like a great series, and this has already peaked my interest to know just what is the purpose of the rush to get Selah married and the high cost her father is willing to pay, unlimited petrol, in a world where that would be like unlimited money? And just what has been happening with the dreams Selah has only when she is near the beach? Does that preclude the reason why her father is being so secretive all of a sudden? I can't wait for the answers I hope to get when I pick up Thunder as soon as it is released. In my opinion, this one was a 4.5 out of 5 stars and truly offered what I believe prequel purpose is and that is to get people interested and wanting to read the series. It did just that.
3.5 Stars. Selah Rishon Chavez is haunted by dreams of the Sorrows, when the country was decimated by all manner of destruction, from nuclear explosions to natural disasters. But those events that changed her world forever occurred long before her birth -- over a hundred and fifty years ago -- and so she buries the fear and questions the vivid dreams foster. She has more immediate concerns: just days from her eighteenth Birth Remembrance, she's been pledged to marry a man she hasn't seen since childhood. Loathe to see her future slip away in the bonds of an arranged marriage, Selah longs for the freedom her brothers possess, to join the family business collecting bounties on the Landers who wash ashore near their village.
But one morning, everything changes when Selah witnesses her brother kill a Lander. Shocked by the senseless waste, Selah vows to discover why her marriage of convenience is so important to her family, determining to fight tooth and nail for the freedom to choose her own future. Driven to spying on her own family, Selah uncovers a tangled web of secrets involving fuel payoffs, mysterious genetic research, and ancient manuscripts -- pieces of a puzzle that seems impossible to solve in time to prevent her marriage. When she sees her father commit a shocking act of violence, Selah decides to throw caution to the wind. Forget consequences -- she'd take what freedom she had left and live life to the fullest...but her brave rebellion may cost more than she could ever dream.
Released as a precursor to Thunder, the first book in Bonnie S. Calhoun's new dystopian series the Stone Braide Chronicles, Tremors introduces Selah and her world. While many e-book bonuses stand alone well as fully-realized short stories, this reads more as a deleted opening to the full-length debut to come, raising more questions than answers. Calhoun packs this "story" -- consisting of four short chapters -- with information, introducing the concept of Landers, the Sorrows, and sinister genetic research, but without much context or depth. There is so much going on here, I was left craving some good world-building, which one assumes will follow in Thunder (and raises the question of why this intro was even needed, though I expect it was likely a publisher decision).
That said, I love seeing an established house like Revell dip their toe in the ever popular young adult market for dystopian thrillers in the mold of Hunger Games. While this intro is far too brief to get a good grasp of Selah's character, her moxie and drive to achieve self-determination is promising, very much in the spirit of Katniss and other heroines of her ilk. The concept is interesting and the world-building holds promise -- I particularly can't wait to discover more about the Landers and why they are hunted. On this excerpt's merits alone, I think it would've served better to include this story in the full-length release, but as a teaser I am undeniably intrigued to read Tremors.
Tremors may be a novella, but it was an eye opening read. It's set in a world unlike the one we are used to. We meet Selah, her brothers Raza (the eldest), Cleon, Dane (youngest) and her parents. There is a mystery trying its best to unfold before Selah. It definitely starts off with a bang.
Selah seems to be a bit of a hard head and doesn't heed her father's warning to stay away from the beach for the week. When she spies on her older brothers and her father she seems a boat coming in. It has a lander on it. It's what they are called, the ones that come in by boat. There is a web keeping the lander alive it seems but her father and brothers aren't into taking them in for bounty. Instead Raza cuts the webbing away. Selah runs down from her hiding space to stop him. She doesn't understand why he would let the family lose the bounty the lander would bring.
Her father, furious that she did not listen to him and stay home with her mother and Dane, her youngest brother. He orders Cleon to take her home at once. When they arrive back home she asks him what is going on but he can't tell her. He does inform her that their father and Simeon, the father to the man her father has agreed to marry her off to will be meeting him later in the big barn. Yeah, she is not happy about that whole I'm marrying you off at 18 and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Besides the fact that she doesn't know the guy, she is not one to be 'controlled' by a man. (Apparently in this world that is what happens. (gags) Like men need more of a reason to be assholes.)
After a confrontational lunch with the family Selah is upset more than before. Someone is 'after' her. They want to kidnap her so she is to go no where alone. One of her brothers (Raza or Cleon) must go where she goes. Now she wants to know know more about this meeting between her father and Simeon. She sneaks into the barn and waits. Finally Simeon and her father show up. She listens, and at a point is almost horrified to find out she is being 'married' off for a Petrol supply. Guess that is a big deal to the men, because they act like its the best thing since chocolate milk. The longer she listens to them talk about the marriage, years of planning this has taken and that they need her and Jericho, the guy she is supposed to marry having babies soon the more upset she gets. Her father says she will only have boy babies. Why only boys? This is the question she needs answers to.
But Selah has to be 'watched'so how can she spy on her father to figure out what is going on here. I mean, really what is happening.. well she comes up with a plan to get away from her brothers and o the beach in the morning. It's time for her to make her own play at her life.
I'm anxious to see where this goes. So far it has my attention. This is not really a 'normal style' of read for me. But.. it's all about opening new doors and taking that step forward. Let's see what happens.
This is a short introduction to the first book in this series Thunder (Stone Braide Chronicles #1). It dives right into the beginning of what sounds to be an incredible series. Fantasy fans are sure to love this short yet intriguing beginning to a very promising journey. Get comfortable as you are immersed into a dystopian version of our world. You will want to hold on tight because I have a feeling this is going to be one wild ride.
Selah is nearing her eighteenth birthday, but it’s not something that she is looking forward to. Instead of this being a time of celebration, it is for her a time of grieving and dread. Her father is marrying her off to a complete stranger, and he intends on isolating her for the last few months which is making her wish her birthday would never arrive. While she has been used to the freedom of roaming her home and surrounding lands, she is now being cruelly confined to the house which is just adding insult to injury. It’s not until she overhears something she was never met to listen to that she begins to see glimpses into what her life will become and what her society is truly like. It rips her heart in two to see a side of her father that she never knew existed and desperately wished she didn’t know anything about. After she witnesses this shocking revelation, she is determined to find out everything she can not only about her future but about the mysteries that she now knows exists all around her.
Even with this very small glimpse into her life, I am anxious to learn everything I can about Selah and her world. I look forward to reading Thunder as this short intro has just wet my appetite for more of this unique and deadly world. She is a strong willed girl, and I fear that she may cause herself more grief then she will be able to deal with on her own. Nonetheless, her story is one that I can can’t wait to read about!
Bonnie S. Calhoun has me hooked, and I plan on diving into the first book as soon as I can. Her writing is rich and compelling. She effortlessly draws you in and captivates you with her characters strength and mystery. This is one story that I know I will enjoy immensely!
I am going to admit a little something here to you all. Tremors by Bonnie S Calhoun is my first ever fantasy read. Shh, don't tell anyone:) Don't laugh, but it really is my first. And I was very pleasantly surprised! I am more of a mystery or historical reader. The fantasy genre has never appealed to me. Not sure why but when I saw this one, and the next book to come, it looked very interesting to read. So I jumped right in!!
This little novella is a prequel to Thunder. Kind of like a short introduction to the full series. It opens with a scene that I can't quite figure out why it is in there. I am assuming that will come later in the actual book. We then meet Selah and her family. Selah is almost 18 and in her world, this is a big deal. But she isn't very happy over it. It seems like no one takes into account what she wants and she is just expected to marry and help their clan out, whether she wants to or not. Her younger brothers are the way most brothers are. A pain at times. But she does seem close to one of them. And her mother I had somewhat of an odd feeling about. She seems to have loved her husband when they first got married and wants to convey that to her daughter, but I also see her fear of her husband.
I love that even in this short intro you are pulled in by the action, adventure, mystery, relationships and even a murder. I don't want to give anything away so if you want to find out what happens, please order this book. Or if you want to jump into things, purchase Thunder! This book has interesting characters and the writing style instantly makes you like them. There are some things that might make this a book for older teenagers but I would say just use your discretion. I also hope that Selah sees how wrong her deception and lying is. It was not a big deal because I know how it is to be a teenager who doesn't always do right. People aren't perfect and I think the author shows this. Of course, this is all a fantasy book anyways:) Loving my introduction to the fantasy genre Bonnie!! You have a new fan now!
Oh, my! Bonnie S. Calhoun has done it again! If you're into dystopian novels (think Hunger Games and Divergent) this is a must-read. What a unique concept and story line! I love the fact that this author has been able to break the preconceived idea that authors need to stick with genres and audiences. If authors can't be creative, who can? In this series, the main character, Selah is going to challenge our thinking--I love that! I will definitely spring for Thunder when it's available. I love the prequel concept (other than the wait for the actual book.) I can't tell you the number of books I've gotten a chapter or two into, only to delete them from my carousel or completely off my device. With a four chapter prequel and a sample first chapter, you'll be buying with the knowledge that it's something you will enjoy.
As for the price, this is a traditional publisher, which means the author has no control over the price. In a day when traditional publishers are going under like restaurant start-ups, and with Amazon's policies for traditional publishers, it's clearly a situation that has no easy answers. I will continue to support traditional publishers, and will also read books by self-published authors.
Sometimes it's a matter of eating PB & J rather than going to a restaurant. Life isn't easy. Sometimes we have to make choices. This Stone Braide Chronicles series concept and the author's style and strong characters are sacrifice-worthy. Who needs good food when there are great books to read?
UPS: I have been beyond anxious waiting for Thunder, so I jumped at the chance to read the short prequel (that happened to be free on Amazon ;-), Tremors on my kindle. Though the very beginning of the book had something wrong with the format and I was not able to read the first few pages (I think…), I read enough to know what was going on without being totally confused. Tremors is written in first person, and I really enjoyed the way that it is written and I enjoyed getting to know Selah for that brief amount of time. Tremors is a great set up to Thunder and I would suggest owning (or at least having it on it’s way) Thunder before reading, as it ends leaving you full of questions and wanting to know what happens next (like, I’m starting Thunder tonight!)!
DOWNS: Even though Tremors only has like 3 chapters (took me about 30 minutes to read), it did have some violence and content not recommended for younger audiences (nothing sexual other than a few comments such as, “This one’s for the ladies!”, but from how the storyline was going, I do expect at least kissing to be in the rest of the series.). I would keep the age limit, preferably at, at least 14 years of age, but absolutely not under 13 for the potential violence that I expect from the series.
OVERALL: I give Tremors 5 out of 5 stars for being well written and grabbing my attention from page 1! This is one of the best prequels that I have ever read!
Inspiration came from several current events...but I can’t tell you which ones...because it’s the secret to the series. In the first book, Thunder, you will get the set-up and flavor of this society, and the mystery will start to unwind. You meet the main players and a few of the despicable characters that send the story forward opening up a Pandora’s box of questions and causes.
By getting right into the action of the story I had to skip over the actual reason for the first scene of Thunder, but I offer that to you as the FREE prequel called Tremors. It’s available at most online retailers and if you read carefully, it will give you the background to help understand secrets you will find in books one, two and three.
Imagination is the key necessary aspect and challenge to writing something futuristic and in this case I started the background of the story with original “can happen” events...3 nuclear suitcase bombs blow up Washington DC causing an earthquake in the Canary Islands, causing the left flank of LaPalma Island (a dormant volcano) to slip into the ocean, causing a tsunami that wipes out the East Coast of the United States (this tsunami is the first scene in Tremors), causing another earthquake that finally slides California into the ocean, causing the Super Volcano in Yellowstone to blow and take out four states.
*rubbing hands together* Thus we have The Sorrows...and now the stage is set for the world of Stone Braide Chronicles...150 years later!
About the Book: In this gripping prequel to Thunder , unsettling secrets change Selah Chavez's life forever in the days before her 18th Born Remembrance.
My Review: Selah awakes with panting from a horrible dream, the only thing is her life is probably worse than that dream. Her father wishes no more than to sell her off to marriage, more than likely a lot like slavery. Selah wont her of it and with her brother's help she sneaks off to the barn to hear what her father and his friend have planning, involving her soon-to-be wedding. And what she hears is something she never thought she'd hear in a million years.
Tremors is a Stone Braide Chronicles Story full of mystery. This book is a prequel to the amazing book Thunder. Tremors leaves you wondering what is going to happen next. I can't wait to see what is in store for Selah, it is sure to be an epic adventure.
**Disclosure** This book was purchased and I decided to leave a review. All opinions are my own.
Tremors is a short prequel to the forthcoming Stone Braide Chronicles. I enjoyed getting a sneak peek into this series and meeting some of the characters who I'm sure I'll be reading more about in the rest of the series. Selah is going to be a great main character. She's bold and a little angsty, which is always a fun combination. Selah's parents and brothers were interesting as well. I was also surprised (pleasantly!) at how much action was incorporated in these 28 pages——an arranged marriage, a murder, and some serious subterfuge.
I think it's important to note that this is a prequel and pretty much leaves readers hanging. I assume that Thunders (the first book in the series) will pick up where Tremors leaves off. I'm extremely curious to see how this series will play out. Great beginning! [4 stars]
Selah Rishon Chavez experiences realistic nightmares of events which occurred 150 years ago.
Her eighteenth Birth Remembrance is in two days. An arranged marriage will follow in three months. She hadn't seen her intended groom since he was a little boy.
Selah struggles against the prison of her culture. At the same time, she discovers desperate secrets.
Bonnie S. Calhoun's Tremors: A Stone Braide Chronicles Story introduces a compelling new heroine. The storyline is intriguing.
I'm hooked! Tremors is a great intro to Book 1 in the Stone Braide Chronicles. It's a little short, but that's the idea. A true teaser, Tremors introduces the characters and world coming in Thunder.
Selah truly is surrounded by people she can't trust, especially her own father who is giving her away and making her marry someone she doesn't want to marry and giving the guy unlimited petrol. Can't wait to read what happens next.
A novella full of questions: a prequel setup for future answers. Maybe there wasn't enough context explained to get me interested enough to continue the series, but it did put this author on my radar.
Three boys are out surfing when something happens. They have vanished. Gone. The ocean has taken them somewhere. Meanwhile, Selah Rishon Chavez is having dreams. Dreams of something called The Sorrows, which were horrible indeed, but happened 150 years prior.
More complicated than just those puzzles, Selah is about to be married. An arranged marriage, to Jericho Kingston from Waterside Borough, who she hasn't seen since they were 7 years old! Selah would like to sort out more of how she feels about this, but in doing so, she starts to reveal secrets and plans. Things that are far past what she thought her 18th Birth Remembrance would bring. These things she has just learned could have considerable impact on her brothers and the rest of her family, and yet they don't all add up. Is this why her Father wants her under guard until she is married? Why will her family not answer questions? What is going on with the Landers and how fast can I start reading Thunder?
This was a thoroughly fantastic prequel to a new series and I am so glad I didn't miss it! Please keep in mind, as a prequel it is short, and leaves you with lots of questions and wanting to read more, just as it should.
