I have read the entire 5-book series. I really enjoyed it. That means nothing to you unless you know exactly what I personally like or dislike. So I will tell you. :) I like books that are real to life. I like books that draw me in and keep me interested. And while I do like well-written and grammatically correct, literary-challenging books, I also like books that perhaps don't fit that standard but which are nonetheless worthy of reading and reach inside you to pull you up to higher heights. I feel Richard Paul Evans is not a Shakespeare, Fitzgerald nor Tolstoy, yet he is real and his books each have much to offer in terms of "moral of the story". I would say that if a person has ever felt like life has beat them down, like life is unfair, or even gone as far as wondering if life is worth living, and felt that everything in their life is just falling apart and they have no desire to go on, then these books are for you. These books, as the author stated in the audio book at the end, are about HOPE. They are about our journey in life and how life is not supposed to be fair, and yet how life is always about hope, even amid the hopelessness we feel sometimes. These books are about dealing with life, and learning to look within. There are a few times these books brought tears to my eyes because the author had such a way of describing a painful moment in my life which I had struggled for 23 years to put into words. I think we will each find a part of ourselves in these books. I like books that touch my soul, and make me feel like I am a better person after reading them, or at least like I have a new tool at my disposal that I can use to become a better person. I like books that helps me understand life and people. I like books that make me laugh and cry, and everything in between. I like books that make me wonder if they are real, and that cause me to run to the map to check the places out (makes me feel like I'm right there, walking alongside the main character). This book and the four that follow offer all of that. Although the English language in these books is something a Jr High kid could read, I would recommend these book for anyone who is 14+ (or maybe even 16+). The only reason I don't say younger is because some topics require a more mature understanding in order to fully grasp the meaning/application, and other topics, instances, innuendos, occurrences or words that require a little more "life lessons" in order to understand. (Note: The only time I offer 5-star reviews, is when i feel that the book is something that every single human being needs in their life, regardless of who they are or where they live. So my highest star rating is normally 4-stars.)

I had began this series when it first came out, and had read the first two books, then for some reason I quit reading them. Fast forward several years. I lost my son to suicide, and these came up a few months after. I began reading the series again and they have been helpful for me as I am wading through my grief. My 17 year old son has began to read them also. For me, Richard Paul Evans' words have spoken to my heart.

I loved this series for so many reasons...I accidentally read the last book of the series first, before I realized it was a five book series. I was hooked, discovered a new author that I had never read and quickly engaged in the series at the beginning and many of his other books.
I find that I learn something that is life changing to me in each of his books. Even if you read each book independently, you will enjoy them and know what is going on.
My least favorite of the series was the fourth book, all the rest I couldn't put down. I read this entire series in less than two weeks.

The author held my interest enough to get through the entire series, but I didn’t really care what Allen ate for every meal.

I read the whole series start to finish. Overall, I enjoyed it and it kept my interest. I want to walk/run across America someday! Hopefully it's not because I've lost everything I care about. As most reviews have stated, it is an uplifting and hopeful story. I only rated it 4 stars for a couple of reasons. 1) It felt drawn out and too predictable at times. All the descriptions of his food... 2) I didn't like the Alan character very much. Ha ha. I wonder who RPE based him on? I kind of thought he was sexist, condescending, and arrogant at times. He described almost what every woman looked like and how attractive she was (even two teenage girls). And several of them trusted him almost immediately and even ended up flinging themselves at him or at least flirting with him. And he remarries a young Maxim model only a year after his wife dies...? By the time the two girls in Florida tempt him back to their room, I was like eye rolling all over the place 🤣. On the other hand, almost every male that he met on his journey was extremely flawed in some way (aside from the Holocaust survivor). He never really connected with any guys. In fact, he was usually critical and/or passive toward them. Am I the only one who felt this way? If so, maybe it says more about me than Alan. 🤔

This 4 book series was so so good on many levels. The adventure alone through the small towns and cities across American had me looking up places and to find they were as described. Then the journey of having it all and loosing it all and the processing of that and the lessons gained along the way through the various amazing and interesting people Alan meets. Healing on so many levels. Life changing lessons. I took notes and wrote quotes in my journal. This is among my favorite all time reads and will revisit again.

All five books are a bit repetitious- walk to the next town, where'd you stay, what did you eat, who did you meet? But it's all the stories in between, what he learns from the people he meets and things he sees, that make you want to keep walking with him. Ultimately, it's about loving, losing, grieving, and being willing to love and risk losing again.

Great series about Alan whose wife died in an accident and he loses his business/house while she was ill. This is his journey within himself as he explores the wisdom of life. Quick reads and Alan is a very likable, realistic character. His spiritual journey is touching and compelling.

Great series. Lots of useful folk wisdom.

The series is worth the time. Though there are some slow sections, and some parts that can be skipped, it’s a good read for youth and adults.

Keep your tissues nearby! I sobbed on the plane while reading one of the books. I took reading breaks between books, but it wasn't difficult to remember where I'd left off because the plot and characters were so well-developed.

I started this series back in 2013. I liked it alot but I rarely do series and when I do I don't do them all at once. I take short or long breaks. But now I'm done and it was a good choice. Cool letter at the end from the author. Wonderful ending also.

Very enjoyable read! I didn’t like the end as it gave absolutely no closer!
A good story far from the daily trials.
