A beautiful young escort is strangled to death, her corpse discarded in a back alley dumpster. The killer's identity is a mystery, and the homicide has gone almost unnoticed. Welcome to Middleton, where these things happen every night and the police are too busy or too jaded to notice.
Ezzy Morgan once roamed these blue collar streets as a paramedic. Here she was weaned from innocence and taught the cold-blooded nature of the human heart. Now she works as a private detective and has shut the door on shootings, stabbings, and the constant specter of death. But her life is about to be shattered when the dead woman's only surviving friend seeks her out, looking for justice.
Clues are sparse and the trail seems to be a dead end before it has even begun. But the mystery takes a macabre turn after another death is dropped at Ezzy's feet, and she's hit with an ultimatum from the world of organized crime: find the killer in the next twenty-four hours . . . or die.
This murder mystery turned terrifying struggle between life and death will expose a cover-up spanning two generations involving a sadistic psychopath, a burned-out cop with a cocaine habit, and a powerful man willing to commit murder just to ensure a secret stays buried.
With the noose tightening and the clock winding down to her own demise, Ezzy must come to terms with a darkness she thought she'd left behind years ago. Nightfall has come to Middleton, and she might not live to see the dawn.
Brian White has crafted a captivating tale in the new noir. Nightfall, with its crisp prose and razor-sharp dialogue, is a thrilling tale of crime and suspense that grips you by the throat and doesn't let go until the end.
Every once in awhile, you find a story that makes you a little sad when it's over. You're greatfull for having had the experience of reading it, but until you find another book you can immerse yourself in, in the same fashion as the one you've just finished, you're convinced that you'll never find another reading experience that will be as equally gratifying. Nightfall did that for me: First when it was in draft and I had the pleasure of screening it, and again in publication.
You'll find plot summaries and character overviews in other reviews, but what I offer is different. Should you read Nightfall? Unequivocally, yes. One could make an argument that it defines a new genre: The graphic novella. Except its illustrations are painted by the author's imagination and eloquent scene descriptions.
Occasionally I get sweaty palms when I watch YouTube videos of people doing things involving heights, like those crazy Russian Kids climbing on under-construction sky scrapers, or that Alex Honnold guy free soloing Half Dome. Stick with Nightfall till the end and let Brian White put you in the action. You'll get the same physiologic response I did when watching those videos, or when reading Nightfall.
"Nightfall" is a crime fiction novel (with a bit of a film noir feel) about a private investigator trying to unravel of the mystery of a prostitute's death with the threat of her own death looming overhead. Ezzy Morgan, the protagonist, is a PI who quit her career as a paramedic after getting burned out. When requested to investigate a prostitute's death, she agrees apprehensively.
It doesn't take long before she finds herself in over her head as a crime lord gets wind of her investigation and threatens to kill her if she doesn't meet his demands. The plot gets going early on and continues gaining momentum until the end.
One of my favorite things about "Nightfall" is the writing. This is the first work from Brian White I've read, and I can't stress enough how taken aback I am by his talent as a writer. He writes with a punchy style and a very matter-of-fact tone that is perfectly suited for the genre.
The characters, from the functioning-addict detective to the cutthroat crime lord, are interesting to read about. The dialogue is well-written, each character with his or her own verbal idiosyncrasies. The icing on the cake in this book is the dark, witty humor. If you want to read a fresh mystery story, I'd recommend this to you.
A great book, definitely keeps you hooked and flipping the pages! A must read for anyone and everyone!!!“Nightfall” has a surprising, twist-filled plot. I didn’t expect the book to take the turn from gritty noir to straight suspense, and that left me just as shocked and confused as Ezzy as she presses on to solve the case—and eventually it becomes not about justice but about saving her own life. The writing is clean and sharp but still manages to create an atmosphere of a seedy town and dangerous characters; Anyway the story follows her investigation into the death of hooker and I won't spoil what happens, but there is a lot of action and some really interesting characters. Actually I personally liked the main character the best because she is kind of a rough, tomboy type but she has a big heart too. I loved the way the author allowed the story to flow and the way her character fit in without leaving you to wonder. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good murder mystery, it is definitely worth the time and the money.
