Silver Pines Mysteries #1

Murder at Maisie's

Rate this book
Welcome to Silver Pines, where handcrafted furniture isn’t the only thing being pieced together—so are the clues to a murder!

After college, Clare Garner couldn’t wait to return home and take over her family’s beloved furniture gallery. While custom builds pay the bills, her true passion is restoring pieces for the quirky townsfolk she considers family. She’s always believed that every piece of furniture holds a story—sometimes even a secret.

Working alongside her high school sweetheart, Jackson Barrett, Clare has built a thriving business and is on the verge of landing her first major corporate project. But just as she’s preparing for a bright future, her past walks into town—Blake Catalano, her college ex, who seems to be hiding something of his own.

When a shocking crime shakes Silver Pines, Clare finds herself in an impossible position—both Jackson and Blake are suspects in a brutal murder. With her sharp attention to detail and natural puzzle-solving skills, she’s the only one who can untangle the truth. But as old flames reignite, tensions rise, and a killer remains on the loose, Clare must uncover the secrets hidden beneath the surface before the next victim falls.

Because, as she always says, every piece has a story… but some stories end in murder.

Perfect for fans of small-town charm, slow-burn romance, and intricately woven mysteries, this cozy whodunit will keep you guessing until the very last page.

This was a quaint, cozy mystery. The first book in a new series was heartfelt and the mystery was well written. I loved the FMC love of furniture which shined in detail on the page. The side characters were wonderful editions. I enjoyed the family vibes among the character. I look forward to reading more in this series.

I listened to Murder at Maisie’s on audio through Blue Nose Audio and had such a great time with it. This one really delivers on that small town cozy vibe while still keeping the tension running just under the surface. I loved how the mystery unfolded piece by piece. Just when I thought I had something figured out, another detail slipped in and shifted everything. It kept me guessing in the best way.

The setting feels lived-in and warm, the kind of place where everyone’s connected, for better or worse, and that made the stakes feel personal. The narration fit the tone beautifully and made it so easy to sink right into the world. There’s something about the way the suspense and the everyday moments were blended that made this feel charming and intriguing at the same time.

If you’re in the mood for a cozy mystery with twists that sneak up on you, this is one I’d definitely recommend.

Any author that uses the NRHP, and uses it correctly, gets my complete appreciation!

Enjoyed this cozy, small town, mystery. Perfect for fall and a nice palette cleanser. The story takes place in a small town near Asheville, NC. Full of historical buildings and furniture (swoon!). I could just envision it all. The characters were lovable and the storyline had me guessing who done it throughout.

New to me narrator Eleanor Caudill captured the character of Clare and sub-characters. Sebastian York had the perfect voice for Blake and Jackson, as well as other supporting characters.

No spice or gory details in this one in case you’re wondering. This is book 1 in the Silver Pines Mysteries series.

Thank you for the ALC BNA!

Clare was an easy character to connect with, and there was a lot of chemistry between the characters. I enjoyed the exchanges between Clare and Sheriff Pate. I appreciated that she ran a furniture business, a unique setting for a cozy mystery. The plot was entertaining with a touch of romance. The pacing of the book was well-paced, and the author’s writing style was lively. I listened to the audiobook, and I enjoyed that they had two narrators, both of whom did an excellent job.

My review is voluntary and all comments and opinions are my own.

So cute

Murder. Mystery. I instantly was thrown into that game or movie when someone dies and everyone is a suspect.

Hallmark mystery at it's finest is the best way I can describe this book. It was cute, but at the same time you were trying to figure out the murder also. Oh and also both your exes / friend are both in close proximity....

Fun, Fast, Quick Read

Set in a small town near Asheville, N. C., Murder at Maisies introduces us to Clare, her friends, and while solving a murder, sets the stage for many future adventures. There is, of course, the prerequisite love triangle. The writing is good and the plotting not bad, although the clues are fairly obvious who the murderer is. Murder at Maisies is a simple, easy paced mystery.

Murder at Maisie's by Lyla Blue @lylabluemysteries
Book 1 in the Silver Pines Mysteries series
Audiobook @bluenoseaudio Performed in duet narration by Eleanor Caudill @eleanorthestoryteller & Sebastian York

Silver Pines is a small town where everyone knows your name. Townies never left, and after college, Clare went straight home to take over her family business. Her passion for restoring old pieces is her passion, and after her high school sweetheart Jackson returned to town, he works alongside her and they make a great team. When she has the opportunity to view an estate sale, she jumps on the opportunity.

Clare gets an unexpected visit in her shop that surprises both Clare and Jackson. Clare's old college boyfriend, Blake looks even better now
after college, and Jackson doesn't hide that he is not happy that he is back. They go out for a bite to eat and catch up, but they lose track of time, and she misses a class that she was scheduled to do at her shop with Jackson. When she tried calling him, he didn't pick up.

When she goes to check the estate house, she runs into a rude, entitled woman who is trying to bulldoze Clare out of the house and prevent her from obtaining items from the sale. Rude... Later, Clare returns to the estate, and when she goes to check a closet, she finds a dead body. This is a crime that this small town has never had, and as the local police investigate, Clare takes matters into her own hands because the two prime suspects are people she knows well, and she knows in her heart that neither is guilty. As she digs, someone isn't happy about it and makes known by attacking her.

This was a quick and easy read, and although there is a murder, it's not as graphic or suspenseful as in a thriller. It would be great for those who like a short mystery that aren't fans of swoony romance and excessive descriptions.

I received an advanced copy through Bluenose Audio in exchange for an honest review prior to its release on November 10th

nice little cozy mystery

Welcome back everybody to another audiobook review today we were talking about murder at Maisie’s. This is a nice little small town romance with a murder mystery involved. now growing up,I absolutely loved true crime. I loved my mysteries. I grew up being a huge fan of Scooby Doo and as you know, that’s always a big mystery involved so I was super excited to get a little murder mystery from blue nose. The story revolves around Claire. She owns a furniture store in Silver Pines. She runs the store with her high school sweet heart Jackson, she’s starting to get over her college ex Blake, but then suddenly the town gets turned upside down when a murder occurs in the small community. now Jackson and Blake are at the top tier number one suspect list and Claire is basically trying to solve the mystery on what actually happened and if her two love interest are actually unalivers. This book is in duet by Sebastian York and Eleanor Caudill. I absolutely love Sebastian York I think he does an amazing job in everything I’ve heard him, he just has one of the most recognizable voices in audiobook world and again to me he is like the Daddy narrator, I feel like a majority of the stuff he narrates, He is a dad or he’s an age gap MMC. This is actually the first book, I’ve listened to with Eleanor Caudill in it and I feel like for the very first audiobook. She did an absolutely phenomenal job as well. I thought that she had such an amazing voice, and she played her character Claire to perfection. Again, big shout out to Blue Nose AUDIO for allowing me to get to listen to this early, shout out again to our amazing narrator, Sebastian and Eleanor and shout out to the author Lyla Blue!

Murder at Maisie's by Lyla Blue
Silver pines Mysteries, Book 1
Interconnected standalones
Narrated by Eleanor Caudill & Sebastian York
Audiobook Listening Time:5 hours 45 minutes

Here is why this book was so fun:
-I love a good mystery and this series is all bout solving crime. Specifically a murder......
-Your learn a lot about the town of Silver Pines and everyone that lives there...In a small town, there is a big "nosey neighbor" vibe.
-Small town charm, old flames working together (Jackson and Clare) and and ex boyfriend (Blake) that shows up out of the blue. Throw in that she discovers a murder victim, both she and Jackson are suspects...well you get the picture that not all is well in Clare's life....On the bright side, Clare has a adorable dog and a great BFF.
-I really enjoyed learning about all of the towns folk and I know we will see more of them in future books.
-This book is a clean romance/mystery without the gore.
-I am very curious how the romance between Jackson and Clare is going toward out with Blake declaring he is going to stick around for awhile.
-I figured out the mystery....for once.... but not the reasons why....

I had the absolute pleasure of listening to this one on audiobook. It is performed in duet by Eleanore Caudill and Sebastian York. I loved the performance from Elenore who is a new to me narrator. I loved the tone of her voice and her chemistry with Sebastian (a Phenomenal narrator) was perfect for this story. Not scary but suspenseful, they both kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what was going to happen. I look forward to more in this series and if you are a mystery lover with a side of romance, this is your book. I loved it and i'm excited to continue with the stories.

Duet Narration with Sebastian York & @eleanorthestoryteller

Narration - I love Sebastian York, he is one of my favourite male narrators and he done the parts of Jackson and Blake so well and other side characters. Eleanor was a new to me narrator and I thought she suited the part of Claire to a tee. I really enjoyed the narration of this book.

Set in a small town in North Carolina where everybody knows everybody and we are introduced to Claire, our main character who happens to find herself in the middle of a m*rder investigation. Although the clues made it pretty easy to guess who the k!ller was, I still enjoyed the mystery of it and having all these little theories of who it was etc. We do also have somewhat of a love triangle between Claire, Blake and Jackson and I do love me a good love triangle. Although the romance was secondary in my opinion to this book, I was still rooting for one man over the other and was happy in the end but also glad the other one still stayed friendly with them etc. This is a clean romance and was actually really refreshing for me to not have any spice in the book and just focus the mystery of the m*rder and all that was going on in the town.

I am intrigued to continue on with this series to see what other mysteries happen in the series.

Thank you to Bluenose Audio and Lyla Blue for the ALC.

I have listened to the series out of order but this still kept me engaged despite knowing the outcome (as the culprit is mentioned by name in later books). It is cosy duet with Hallmark x Cabot Cove vibes and a hint of romance and a great quick listen. Eleanor Caudill is perfect as Clare who finds herself embroiled in a mystery after finding the victim. Clare is very sweet and kind but her little flashes of anger and jealousy now and again keep her on the right side of being a Mary Sue. Sebastian York is always great but his Jackson was probably my favourite. There are some darker hints to his past and upbringing but on the whole its a pretty low angst story. Similarly with the romance, I was expecting some more rivalry between Jackson and Blake but the love triangle is very much three separate lines at the moment. I did like the showdown with Jackson and Claire on the porch though and was here for that tension!

My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read

Murder at Maisie’s is an enjoyable cozy mystery with a good mix of quirky characters and small-town charm. Clare, the main character, is a determined woman who finds herself at the heart of a local murder investigation. She’s not a professional detective, but her curiosity and the support of her friends push her to uncover the truth. Clare’s easygoing personality makes her relatable, but at times, she can seem a little too naive about the dangers surrounding her. Still, her interactions with the other residents of Silver Pines help move the plot along and add some fun dynamics to the story.

What I liked about Clare was how she balanced her personal life with the mystery, showing that she’s just a regular person trying to do the right thing, even when it’s risky. The supporting characters were also well done, each adding their own flavor to the mystery, from the overly helpful neighbor to the more secretive ones. While the mystery itself was interesting, there were moments where I felt like the investigation could’ve been more thrilling or complex. Overall, it’s a fun, light read, perfect for fans of cozy mysteries, and Clare’s character is a solid one to root for.

This review is for the audiobook published by Blue Nose Audio.

Murder at Maisie's is my first book by Lyla Blue, and I am looking forward to continuing the series! This small town cozy mystery, with a touch of slow-burn second chance romance, was an entertaining whodunit that I was able to finish in a day.

The residents of Silver Pines, especially Clare, Jackson, and their friends, are delightfully relatable and a touch off beat, making a perfect set up for future books. The plot was entertaining, clues cleverly laid out, and overall, made for an enjoyable fall afternoon.

I love a duet narration and with Sebastian York and Eleanor Caudill performing, Murder at Maisie's did not disappoint! They brought the characters and the town of Silver Pines to life. Both narrators did a fabulous job creating distinct voices for the characters, making the story easy to follow on audio. It may seem like a trivial detail to some, but I enjoyed the sound effect of a cell phone buzzing during one of the scenes.

This audiobook is sure to be enjoyed by cozy mystery fans looking for a new series!

Wonderful start to a mystery series.

Calling all cozy mystery fans – this is a fun, quick, entertaining read with some twists that will keep you guessing until the end. This was also my first book by Lyla Blue, and I am a fan now.

Clare is running her family’s furniture store with the aid of her childhood sweetheart and friend, Jackson. One day, her college boyfriend, Blake, pays her store a visit. He’s in town for an estate sale. Later at that estate, Clare finds a body in a wardrobe. Quickly, both Jackson and Blake become prime suspects in the murder. Clare finds herself in the middle of the investigation and is determined to prove their innocence.

Narrated by Sebastian York and Eleanor Caudill. They were great together. Both portraying multiple characters very distinctly. Sebastian can read me anything and I am in. Eleanor is new to me, and she was perfect as Clare. She gave us Clare’s tenacity, loyalty, and heart.

This is fun mystery with a touch of slow burn romance, great characters and set in a quaint town. I listened to this in one sitting and was riveted until the end. I look forward to the rest of the series.

This was an entertaining and enjoyable book. The characters were interesting and the murder mystery was very puzzling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Amazon synopsis:
After years away, Clare Garner is back in her hometown, happily restoring antique pieces and running her family’s furniture gallery. With her high school sweetheart, Jackson Barrett, by her side and a big corporate project on the horizon, life is finally falling into place.

That is, until Blake Catalano—her swoon-worthy college ex—waltzes back into town with a smile and something he’s definitely not telling her.

Things take a sharp turn when a body turns up, and suddenly both Blake and Jackson are suspects in the murder. With tensions rising and the rumor mill in overdrive, Clare must untangle the mystery—before someone else takes a permanent break from small-town charm.

Perfect for fans of slow-burn romance, small-town drama, and mysteries wrapped in charm, Murder at Maisie’s is the cozy escape you’ve been craving.

What an introduction to the Silver Pine Mysteries! I really enjoyed this cozy mystery by Lyla Blue. Clare Garner is the inquisitive furniture gallery owner, working with her high school sweetheart, Jackson Barrett. Their relationship is vague, with a standing brunch date, but not much else. Very early on, Clare gets a surprise visit from her college boyfriend, Blake Catalano. Immediately, we are met with a strong love triangle vibe that lingers throughout the story. Clare finds herself truly torn when both of her beaus are suspects in the scandalous town murder.

This cozy mystery had it all. The quirky townspeople, the mysterious woman in sunglasses, and the Clare's adorable pets. I also liked that in the end, Clare really is her own woman and is determined to clear the names of both the men in her life. The audio was great! Sebastian York is a favorite of mine. Eleanor Caudill is a new-to-me narrator, and I thought she was simply fabulous. I can't wait to listen to more of her in the next book!

Clare Garner has returned home to run her family’s furniture gallery. She works closely with her former high school boyfriend, Jackson. Everything is going well until her ex-boyfriend from college (Blake) arrives in town to attend an estate sale. This puts her in somewhat of an awkward situation. To make it worse, there is a murder and Clare, Jackson and Blake are all suspects. Clare is determined to clear all of them and find the real killer before it’s too late.

I was gifted an audiobook of this story and I was hooked from the beginning. Blue uses very descriptive language for her scenes and it makes the reader feel as if they are there. The character development is strong and the story telling is spot on. There is mystery, suspense, humor and a slow-burn romance that kept me engaged throughout the entire book. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audiobook and think mystery lovers will be entertained.

I really enjoyed the audiobook of Murder at Maisie’s. I liked it so much, in fact, I finished it in less than a day! The main character, Claire, was relatable and likable. All of the support characters, including the two potential love interests, were charming and engaging. The mystery kept me guessing, with quite a bit of suspense and a satisfying conclusion. The atmosphere gave perfect cozy small town vibes that made me want to move right in. Kind of a perfect cozy. The best part was the narration! I listen to audiobooks everyday, and this is one of the best narrations I’ve heard in recent memory. Sometimes, I don’t like multiple narrators for an audio, but this was done so well. I liked both the male and female narrations. Highly recommend! I’m looking forward to the rest of the series coming out on audio.

This was such a fun and cozy no spice small town murder mystery!
The author did such a great job on the descriptions that I really could feel like I was in this small town! I absolutely had a blast while listening to this one and I would definitely say it is a great palette cleanser! The plot was good and with the murder mystery added in it really kept me engaged and wanting to figure out who did what and why.

I was lucky enough to listen to the audiobook of this one
And I can honestly say the duet narration done by Eleanor Caudill & Sebastian York was amazing! Both narrators brought the characters to life! And their performances were amazing! Eleanor Caudill is a new narrator to me and I really enjoyed Eleanor’s performance and can’t wait to hear more from her!

I will definitely be listening to more of this book series!

Murder at Maisie’s starts off strong. The story is interesting, love that there is zero smut and the mystery keeps you wanting to know what will happen next. The characters are easy to like, and the setting works well for a cozy mystery. I bounced between 4 characters being the murderer for most of the book. The writing was easy and light. There were a few mistakes that should have been caught by an editor. These errors did not take away from the story or become a distraction.

Overall, for me the problem was the ending. It came out of nowhere. The mystery was solved very quickly, without enough buildup, which made it feel rushed. Even though the book was enjoyable for most of the story, the sudden ending was disappointing and takes away from the overall experience.

I received this free in a Goodreads contest.

This is a great read! I was hooked from the first pages, and I would recommend it to my book club!

It was a charming town setting, and I liked all the characters. It was easy to be absorbed by the clever plot, and I could relate to the characters, especially because I started refinishing furniture when I was in high school and I loved it.

The descriptions are so vivid that I could almost smell the wood as I read on. I could see myself in the workroom and see Maisie's creations.

I highly recommend this book, which I won in a Goodread's giveaway, but never was notified. Fortunately I got a reminder to not forget to review it, otherwise I would have missed reading a delightful book and a series. There are now 3 books, and I plan on reading the next two.

Clare Garner lives in Silver Pines, North Carolina where she owns The Gallery furniture shop. When the estate auction is scheduled for the town's beloved Kindergarten teacher, Maisie Pickerel, Clare has her heart set on getting a wardrobe. Unfortunately when she goes to look at it, she finds a woman, Giselle Simmons, stabbed in the heart and shoved inside! Giselle just happens to be Clare's college boyfriend-- Blake Catalano's girlfriend and boss. And the murder weapon belonged to Clare's high school boyfriend--Jackson Barrett. Now Blake and Jackson are the main suspects in Giselle's murder! Clare knows that neither one is a murderer and she is out to prove it. I liked this small town mystery. Clare is a likable amateur sleuth and the characters are interesting. The book is well written and the author makes it easy to visualize what's happening.

* I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book that I received from a Good Reads giveaway. *

This was a fun small-town mystery. I really thought it was going to be a complicated love triangle, but it was clear pretty quickly how it was going to play out. There is a cute dog and quirky friends to add some interesting moments. The dog is the best part of the whole story. She's really cute. The clues were laid out instead of the author holding them back. It made it obvious who the murderer was, but I liked that better than in some books where you don't know anything until the reveal at the end. Overall, I think this was a fun read.

This cozy, heartfelt murder mystery was so fun. I enjoyed the FMC Clara so much. I live for suspense in a book and it was there and it was incredible. This book really had me thinking the whole time to figure out who the killer was. It was so hard for me to tell who I liked more when it came to Jackson and Blake. I really like them both, but I feel like as the series goes on I will eventually lean one way or the other.

Eleanor Caudill and Sebastian York did so well with this audiobook. Definitely keep the suspense feel real.

I am so excited for the rest of the series!

I got the opportunity to listen to the audiobook. Sebastien York and Eleanor Caudill are so good together! I was my first time hearing Eleanor and I'll definitely be going back to listen to more.

Murder at Maisie's was quick and fun. It has nice suspense and i was dedicated to unraveling the mystery along with Story. She's such a snoop! And this girl needs to start watching horror movies because i was yelling at her to walk AWAY from the noise, not towards it!!

This is a bit lighter than what i normally read, and not gonna lie, it took me out of my comfort zone! But I'm so glad i gave it a try!

I enjoyed this audiobook and the mysterious, whodunit yet cozy feel that it has. It includes a small town, antique furniture that is said to hold stories and sometimes secrets, ex's, relationships, quirky people and murder of course.
Eleanor is a new narrator to me. It's easy to tell the main character, Clare, from the other female characters. Her voice just adds to the cozy feel of the story.
Sebastian is one of my favorites. He was perfect for Jackson and Blake. He brought the tension between them to life and then easily switched to the caring tone with Clare.
I recommend this audiobook. It was a great, quick, listen. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

This was such a charming start to the Silver Pines Mysteries! Lyla Blue delivers a classic cozy murder mystery with a delightful small-town vibe, quirky side characters, and a heroine you can’t help but root for. Clare’s love of furniture restoration added a unique touch, and the setting, complete with nosy neighbors and old flames, made the mystery feel layered and personal.

I listened to the audiobook and absolutely loved the narration. The duet performance brought Clare and the suspects to life, adding depth and warmth to the story. It made the twists even more engaging and the emotional beats more heartfelt.

Claire Garner lives in Silver Pines and runs a custom furniture business. She also loves restoring antique furniture and hopes to purchase an armoire at an estate sale. When she goes to see the item upstairs she finds the armoire damaged and inside is the body of a woman whom Claire is bidding against in a major corporate project. The suspects turn out to be her high school ex, Jackson Barrett, and Blake Catalano, her ex from college. Knowing them so well she knows neither of them could do it and she conducts her own investigation to prove she right.
A great start to a series. I enjoyed the setting and the town and all the interesting characters.

Murder at Maisie’s, book one in the Silver Pines Mysteries was a delightful listen for me. I wasn’t sure this would be my kind of book. This thought soon vanished as I continued listening. I did like how Lyla Blue crafted the intrigue with her writing.

The character voices performed and narrated by Eleanor Caudill and Sebastian York, are superb. I love how you both gave each of your character’s their own quirky personality. Very much a highlight for me as I listened to this story.

Thank you Lyla for the mystery and love triangle aspects woven in Murder at Maisie’s, you had me engaged throughout your story.

Thank you Blue Nose for an enjoyable and entertaining listen.
