I am a fan of butterflies. I do a weekly butterfly survey and I've learned a great deal from watching local butterflies and counting them and photographing them and identifying them. I could not stop myself from buying this book at the bookstore we visited in New York City. But here's the truth: it was mostly about the development and evolution of butterflies and their genetic makeup. That's two or three floors over my head. I'm sure others who are a great deal more knowledgable about butterflies would love this book, and I plan to pass it on soon to one of them.

A lovely book with so many amazing facts about butterflies in all their glory. The part about human impact was a difficult read, but so important and I am glad it is included. The illustrations in this book are simply stunning. Had a lot of fun reading it

Report by Masha O.:
Butterflies can be found just about anywhere. They can adapt to severe weather conditions. They are very good at finding their host plants. If they begin to rely too much on one host plant they can refuse to go to other plants. Butterflies have taste receptors on their feet, so this is a quick way to evaluate what plant it is. The butterfly senses include olfaction (sense of smell) for which antennae are mostly responsible.
Caterpillars have many ways to defend themselves. Some caterpillars have glands that release a nasty scent when they feel threatened. Some defenses are colorful.Caterpillars also have an amazing ability to turn leaf matter into tissue, and they are rarely regarded with respect by humans, even people that like butterflies. Caterpillars use their vision when searching for food.
Butterfly eggs can be very different in shape and size. Butterflies can lay eggs in groups or singly, which determines if a caterpillar will start its life alone or with others.
