Ernestine is cursed. At least, that is what some whisper about her. Others say she is possessed by the devil. Doctors come and go and yet no one can determine what is wrong with the young noblewoman.

France 1815; Ernestine Emilie Prondre de Guermantes should have had it all. The French Revolution had ended. Her family not only survived but maintained their chateau and their fortunes as well.

However, she is plagued by a mysterious malady unlike any recorded illness. Occasionally she loses control of her own body. Her limbs fly of their own accord and obscenities escape her tongue, at all sorts of random intervals.

All Ernestine wants is to feel some sense of control over her own body and her own life.

Known for years simply as the mysterious “Mme. Dampierre'' in medical journals, this woman was key to the discovery and naming of this curious condition. Her story is extraordinary. Her influence prevails, though previously unknown and forgotten.

Inspired by true events, Madamn will shed light on a forgotten piece of history.

I am an adult with Tourettes Syndrome. I follow this author on social media and have watched this book grow from it's infancy.
It is almost impossible to explain what it's like to have a condition like TS, however this author does an exceptional job of doing so. There were so many times in the book where I just looked at the page and said "That's me. That's what it is like." Having that understanding an validation, just like Em sought, means everything. It means you are seen.
This book needs to gotten into the hands of educators, law enforcement, corporate management. People need to know that disorders like this, or disorders in general, are not bad, they are just different. And different is good.
Thank you J S for putting into words what so many in my community cannot say.
I will be recommending this book to everyone.

I read this book in 3 days!!! I couldn't put it down! I had started watching Baylen Out Loud on TLC and when I heard about this book, it made me curious to know what it was like living with tourettes in a high society in France. Especially back when manners and appearance was everything. I cant wait to read the next book!!!!

Baehr brings the condition to life

The author was able to capture the pain and humiliation that many people have suffered due to Tourette syndrome, while also showing the resolve and joy that can come from taking control of your own life and living yourself for who you are. It was a solid plot with good character development.I would have liked a little more thorough of an ending, it was a bit abrupt with a lot of room to take the story in different ways, but I think the overall goal of the author was accomplished.

What a book!

This was a great book! I loved the characters. Although the mother frustrated me. It was so fun to follow the character Em. She was a sweet girl that just wanted to be loved and cared for.
I don’t love that this book made me cry but unfortunately that happens a lot when I read. This was definitely a fun and different kind of book that I would recommend to anyone who loves books in the 1800s.
