Flick’s fallen hard for his band’s vocalist, Lex—also known as His Best Friend. Lex is the type of guy who, if he wants something, he just grabs it, and he hasn’t grabbed Flick. Reluctant to screw up the good thing they otherwise have going, Flick resigns himself to suffering through the unrequited crush—until the night they go out in search of weed in the middle of a blizzard, get chased by a maniac with a butcher knife, and end up sharing a fold-out sofa in their pot supplier’s basement. Then all bets are off. (M/m erotic romance, 8600 words)
3.5 stars I really like this new-to-me author's writing. She manages to pack a punch in just a few pages. This is short so it suffers a bit in character development but I enjoyed what I got.
This novella feels like an excerpt of an actual book. We don't know why Flicker and Lex are in that house in the middle of nowhere; we only know that they are part of the same band and that they are close friends and that Flicker has been lusting after Lex for a long time. The story is about them in the basement of a couple's house, smoking weed and drinking beer, and Lex proposing Flicker to do it. Finally something happens out of their sexual tension. They kiss and give each other bj and that's it. It suggests that they will continue doing it, but honestly I wasn't much invested in these 2.
And for the first time I read a book by Zoe X. Rider that doesn't involve bdsm, which I missed in this story. I think she makes the best edging and light bdsm.
Short but so satisfying! The sexual tension is, as usual, bordering on unbearable, but the typical Rider's BDSM element is notably absent here, which I liked. If you want more, another Rider's short story Coming Clean resembles this one a lot without seeming repetitive. And it's also included in Hard Rock collection that costs the same.
