Hidden in the far South Pacific lies the lost island continent of Caprona, forgotten by history and time itself. In the year 1836, Sicilian Captain Fausto Caproni and his sister Marina lead a voyage across the raging seas to rediscover the fabled land first sighted by their grandfather—only to plunge into a terrifying tropical world known to its inhabitants as Caspak, thriving with giant carnivorous lizards and bestial tribesmen from the dawn of time. With only swords and muskets to defend themselves, the Caproni siblings are thrust into a desperate fight for survival against Caspak’s primordial creatures, but a greater threat may be allies among the crew who harbor a deadly secret agenda.
Bonus “Weird Voyage into Terror” by Mike Wolfer When Captain Douglas Conover and the crew of the vacuum airship Favonia embark on an exploratory mission through a dimensional barrier, they must confront the alien life-forms that infest a strange planetoid’s surface . . . and its interior!
THE FIRST UNIVERSE OF ITS KIND A century before the term "crossover" became a buzzword in popular culture, Edgar Rice Burroughs created the first expansive, fully cohesive literary universe. Coexisting in this vast cosmos was a pantheon of immortal heroes and heroines-Tarzan of the Apes, Jane Porter, John Carter, Dejah Thoris, Carson Napier, and David Innes being only the best known among them. In Burroughs' 80-plus novels, their epic adventures transported them to the strange and exotic worlds of Barsoom, Amtor, Pellucidar, Caspak, and Va-nah, as well as the lost civilizations of Earth and even realms Beyond the Farthest Star. Now the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe expands in an all-new series of canonical tales written by today's talented authors!
Ever since Christopher Paul Carey took over as the Creative director of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe publishing line, he has chosen extremely well in the authors that write the novels, short stories and graphic novels. Mike Wolfer has been a prolific and very dependable creator in the line.
He's been writing ERB related comics and graphic novels for awhile now, and every contribution has been extremely entertaining. He brings new fantastic characters and worlds into the ERB Universe, whilst keeping the continuity and flavor of what's already been established. He kept that going with various short stories, included as bonus material in the novels of other writers.
Fortress Primeval is his first full prose novel in the ERB Universe, and his momentum doesn't slow down.
We are introduced to new, human characters embarking on a fantastic journey, but instead of 20th Century Americans, our main protagonists are young Sicilian siblings in the 1800's
It's a swashbuckler prequel to Burrough's original Land That Time Forgot trilogy, that includes everything you want in that genre, with lots more. Great swordplay, weird menaces and DINOSAURS! What's fascinating about this novel, is that the dinosaurs are not named, in the scientific terms we know, but described as they would be by humans who lived before paleontology was a science.
This novel is a page turner and highly recommended.
The bonus novelette, Weird Worlds: Voyage into Terror, also by Wolfer is a treat of a different kind.
This adventure has characters, references and situations already introduced by Wolfer and other creators. The Airship "Favonia" and its crew, who we met in various graphic novels and comics, are established with a Star Trek feel. A diverse cast that you get attached to immediately. A thrilling yarn, that sets up more adventures ahead!
So excited to see what the ERB Universe creatives bring next!
I really am pleased that ERB Inc. has created the ERB Universe series of books. For a long-time Burroughs fan, it is so nice to read new stories set in the Burroughs universe. This book was a nice return to the land of Caspak with 2 new main characters and written in a style similar to the great master himself. If you like Burroughs' books, you'll love this one by Mr Wolfer.
