DNF at 40%. A straight-up bad time for humans peppered with unrelenting wildlife misery. Not particularly original in the realm of "evil villages using folklore to torment city people". Skimmed the end to confirm it was going where you'd figured it would. Do not read this novel if you are in a precarious place with your mental health.

Oooh, this was one of my most anticipated books of the year. The cover and description were an instant win—but the execution, unfortunately, fell short.

A husband and wife move to a quiet village with their young son, hoping to mend the fractures in their marriage. But from the moment they arrive, an unsettling presence lingers in the shadows. The villagers are less than welcoming, and something prowls outside their cottage at night, watching. No matter how much they try to shake it, an eerie wrongness clings to them—and when they return from a night at the pub to find their son missing, they realize just how deep that wrongness runs.

Drenched in folkloric dread and fairytalesque unease, I was hoping for The Country Will Bring Us No Peace—but what I got felt more akin to Lost in the Garden, The Woodkin, or A Carnival of Atrocities, which received mediocre review from me. It promised fire but delivered only smoking coals. So agonizingly close… yet frustratingly far.

All the best parts were packed into the last quarter of the book. A stronger balance would have made this a standout read.

V knize je od začátku ironizován romantický mýtus poklidného venkova. Příroda zde nehraje roli esteticky krásného útočiště, ale naopak všudypřítomné nejistoty a nebezpečí, lidé zde nejsou skromní rolníci, co vám přinesou plato vajec k prahu, tradice jsou fuč a kulisy na sebe stihly nabalit všechno patologické, co známe i z města. Popis prostředí je přesný a znepokojivý se všemi poťouchlými detaily, zároveň jsem se však nemohl ubránit dojmu, že autorka vesnici poznala očima odměřeného pozorovatele; to vyobrazení místních obyvatel je doopravdy moc stereotypní. Netvrdím, že neexistují i takovéto vesnice, kde je každý buran a má vždy po ruce cigarety a pivsona, navíc se jedná o fikční svět, takže na nějakou realitu vůbec nemusíme hledět, ale zároveň mi to vzhledem k výtečně vykresleným kulisám i se současnými rysy přijde škoda.
Jazyk je fenomenální jízda, hutné, temné, metaforické, přirovnání a všechny tyhle věci padají elegantně jedna za druhou, nepřebývají, nekřičí z textu, otravných ornamentů je zde naštěstí minimum ("krvavý pomeranč", ach jo). Zároveň je to syrové, až naturalisticky urputné v popisu tělesnosti a teplotních stavů, které lze cítit až fyzicky. Vystavěno je to rafinovaně, skrz vnitřní monology a polopřímou řeč různorodých (i zvířecích) postav, zajímavě se pracuje s retrospektivami a využitím citací z různých textů spjatých s červenou karkulkou, které posilňují následující dění. Vůbec originálně je zobrazeno znásilnění z lesa, kde si násilník nedbale položí mobil na pařez –⁠ skrz záznam je daný akt popisován. Napětí od začátku buduje rozpor mezi tím, jak se v dialozích realizují postavy, a co si ve skutečnosti myslí, což je řečeno mnohdy velmi bez servítek a brutálně.
Střet vesnice a města se ve knize ani tolik nerozvíjí, jistě, první scéna se o navození tohoto motivu snaží, ale přijde mi, že se jedná spíš o neschopnost adaptovat se v novém prostředí a vyrovnat se přitom se šrámy z minulosti, než že by mezi Bohumilem a Bohumilou a jinými obyvateli Podlesí byl nějaký ohromný rozdíl. Dysfunkčnímu vztahu nepomáhá ani přítomnost "kluka" (syna) se sníženou inteligencí, ve vypjaté chvíli si pak dokonce manželé přiznávají, že pro ně znamená přítěž. Za morálními nešvary místního obyvatelstva (sobectví, pokrytectví a všechny tyhle věci) se skrývají osamělé duše, nešťastné z nehostinného a náročného prostředí. I v nově příchozích však raší nemorální tendence, kolikrát se u nich objeví touha po vykonání násilí. Ukazuje se, že pudovost a jistá zvířeckost je silně zakořeněná v každém z nás (to umocňují i četné animizace), jak není lehké uniknout nadřazenému postoji vůči slabšímu, který si nadřazený postoj vylívá zase na někom jiném. Zranitelně se jeví zejména ženy a zvířata; Bohumila je redukována na sexuální objekt, zvířata na surovinu.
Zakončení s motivem folklorního rituálu, při němž se mísí mytické a současné, lidské a přírodní a další polarity, zůstává rafinovaně nedopovězeno, znepokojení tomu dodává příjezd obdobné rodiny. Jo a krásná pasáž s hledáním tutoriálu na odlívaní ze sádry!

Sledoval zápisník v její ruce a sáhl si na srdce. Právě se tamtudy prosmýkla. Budí se v něm, protahuje, rozespale mžourá a aktivuje jedové váčky nad špičáky, jistěže ty ta jeho liška má. I kdyby to bylo proti přírodě, prostě tam jsou. Má v sobě zvíře, zrozené na hranici druhů. Někdy má ploutve a je bezzubé, jindy jed ve váčcích a ostrý jazyk, dnes špičaté zuby. Až vezme do ruky zápisník, liška kousne a vypustí mu do žaludku nažluklou vlnu bahnitých nářků a usopleného neštěstí.
Bohumil sleduje Bohumilu, sleduje zápisník. Rozezná jeho rukopis. Roztáhlé dětské písmo plné chybějících hlásek. A k tomu zase ty kresby, zase ty malůvky, ty vystřihovánky. Letáky z hospody. Hybridní zvířata se dvěma ocasy, třema očima, čtyřmi rohy. Poskládané, slepené, vystřižené, dokreslené bájné bytosti, ani ryba, ani rak. A do toho tenhle leták, tahle pohádka.

Najhnusnejšia fikcia, akú som kedy čítala. Ľutujem, že som ju zobrala do rúk. Hnus, zlo, špina doslovná aj prenesená. Jazyk pôsobivý, to áno, a aj chcete dočítať, že o čo ide. Ale tak koncentrovaná ľudská hnusota, až neviem, čo tým autorka chcela povedať.

Ty bláho, tady se do všeobjímajícího hustého bláta zaboříte pomalu v první větě knihy. Jenomže vás nepustí a táhne stránkami, které jsou napnuté k prasknutí. Chybí jen málo a v očekávání něčeho nepříjemného, zapichujícího se pod nehty, zavrtávajícího se pod kůži, je málem roztrhnete. Autorka skvěle vládne jazykem, je obratná v nakládání se slovy a větami, přináší něco trochu jiného, než co jsem od knihy očekávala. Ovšem něco velice neotřelého. Červená Karkulka nikdy nebyla žádná oddychová pohádka, ale tahle je teda fest zahuštěná.

Ke konci jsem uvažovala, jestli 1 nebo 2 hvězdy, ale ten konec to kompletně pohřbil, takže je to vlastně jasný.
Jediný, co je dobře je, že celá knížka je čtivá, takže u toho člověk nestráví mladí.

Jinak je to vpodstatě koncentrovaná studnice hnusu. Četla jsem Zolu a četla jsem Šlejhara a ani naturalismus v čistý podobě nebyl tak odpornej jako tady tohle.

Stereotyp vesnice je ze začátku možná docela k smíchu, ale nakonec to člověka možná spíš uráží, protože NE, takhle vesnice fakt nevypadá.

Čekala jsem folklorní horor, masky ve tvaru Morany, kostýmy s folklorní tématikou. Dostala jsem pošahanou hru na Červenou Karkulku, což mě možná štve ještě o něco víc, protože Červená Karkulka je skvělá a uvědomuju si, že její starší verze jsou dost brutální, ale tohleto tady... Jestli to mělo fungovat jako retelling, tak to tak nefungovalo. Celý to vlastně nějak nefungovalo.

Jen samý otázky a žádný odpovědi. Intertextualita docela zajímavá, ale dalo se z toho vytřískat víc. Celou dobu jsem si myslela, že nás autorka připravuje na něco velkýho, na obrovskou akci, ale ta akce nakonec byla taky zmatená, hnusná a úchylná.

Pokud chcete něco, co se rychle čte a budete se u toho ošívat hnusem, tohle je přesně pro vás.

Další variace na pohádku o červené karkulce. Jenom si nejsem jistá, jaké poučení, jako z každé správné pohádky, by mělo z vyprávění vyplývat. že život na vesnici není žádná selanka, ba naopak, holý boj o přežití a všichni lidi jsou víc nebo míň bestie. spíš víc. Jo, to by asi mohlo bejt ono. Takže žádné příjemné čtení to rozhodně nebylo, navíc autorka si dala skutečně záležet, aby poctivě vykreslila to nejhorší z nás a s velmi úspornými prostředky přivodila čtenáři stavy až fyzické nevolnosti. To je za mě obdivuhodný počin. Na druhou stranu mě to nijak víc neoslovilo a kromě toho, že je to velmi dobře napsaná knížka, nevím, co si o tom mám víc myslet.

4,5* geniální psychologický horor. Nerozumím, proč kniha neni nikdy po českých bookstagramech, kdyby brzo neměla vyjít v anglickém jazyce, nikdy bych na ni nepřišla. Skvěle napsáno, asi to neni pro každého, ale za mě je to na úrovni zahraničních unhinged horor románů. Takové Slunce, Seno bez humoru a v teroru a strachu. Skvělý.

Strong, surreal writing, strong atmosphere, a writing style that guarantees neither POV nor linear time (not so much unreliable narrator as unreliable narration), and although the animal death and sexual assault made my mouth twist I can see their purpose in the overall narrative - taking all the subtexts found in old myths, all the ways people fear and lust over women and wolves lurking in the woods, and making them explicit, impossible to overlook or pretend not to notice or retell in a kinder way.

And yet at the same time I think this book was in fact holding its punches! which is very funny to say about a story that opens with a man forcefully sticking his arm up a cow, goes onto graphically depict the killing of fox kits and somewhat less graphically depict a rape scene, plus sooo many gnarly wounds going rancid. But I kept waiting to really delve into the myth - why THIS story - and yet there were few surprises or subversions. "Fairy tales but dark and violent" isn't a new idea and it's only fun if you commit to unearthing new ways to consider said tale.

These characters fit exactly into the slots they appear to fit into at the beginning (Bohumil makes a decent hapless grandmother and I see the efforts to reclaim little red riding hood's spunk in some of the retellings and Bohumila's behavior, but how I wanted Bohumila to be the wolf and Sláva the girl!). The villagers can't fit the boy into the story (perhaps why the story itself never names him...?) but that means they just let him live for some reason. The very last chapter is out of a standard issue horror movie. What was the deal with the vanishing gay couple? At one point I thought the book was confirming cannibalism and I was like, oh, that could be interesting! but then it didn't give me cannibalism. :(

Meaty concepts but messy. Figuratively and otherwise. Think that's enough Cow Fluids for me for a while.

Great malevolent red-in-tooth-and-claw woods though. I saw the author at a q&a where she said they keep marketing this book as a deep look into village life but actually she is a city writer and the woods are scary. And as another city writer who thinks the woods are scary, I'm on her team. I just wish she'd done more to connect the myth to the people carrying it out, delved into the whys, made the Bohus other than they appeared to be (just as the wolf pretending to be the grandmother is other than it pretends, just as the meaning of this fairy tale is other than that of the kinder gentler modern version we teach to children...). The villagers and their menace are shallow - I like the emphasis on the dark reality of the bucolic countryside fulla honest hardworking godfearing yadda yadda people, the way the villagers themselves wished slow death on everyone who tried to suck up to them about the pretty nature and clean air, but even I have to admit it reads very "inbred country folk torment overeducated city slickers," which is its own cliche.

And I wish there was cannibalism! that's all.

This is a very strange re imagining of little red riding hood. While I will say it is so cool to read a book translated from Czech, I found the pacing to be a bit slow and I don’t think I liked one single character in this book, except for the boy.

A husband and wife decide to get away from the city because their son as they put it has a “cognitive delay”, so I’m thinking just based on what I read that he most likely has Autism or is on the spectrum. He is 12 years old, but the dr’s have said that he thinks more like a 6 year old. Sooooo they live the city to try to help repair their marriage/get away from all of the comments people make about their son, but they end up in this creepy cottage full of a town of creepy people.

I will say that there are several characters who refer to their son as a “retard”, which I don’t like. I wonder if that was the word choice because all of these characters are awful/have bad intentions? I really don’t know.

The couple makes very questionable decisions on basically everything and I didn’t like them either. There is one character Pepa who is such a racist asshole and made my blood boil.

Honestly? I am still confused on why the book ended the way it did and fully how we got here. I still need to sit with it more.

Zuzana Říhová umí psát, je zdatná stylistka, takže se její literární počínání určitě vyplatí sledovat. Dialogy a dějové pasáže střídají lyrická líčení, atmosféra postupně houstne a tmavne, o motivaci a minulosti postav se dovídáme v náznacích a určitě ne víc, než je nezbytně nutné. Přestože nepotřebuji zcela jasné vysvětlení všech záhad a tajemství, mám pocit, že se nám tu rozmáhá takový nešvar, že autor vlastně neobjasní vůbec nic a vše nechá na čtenářově fantazii. A to mi přijde trochu nefér. Sama si u dobře rozehrané zápletky představuju, jak bych v příběhu pokračovala sama, a jsem zvědavá, jak se s ním vypořádá spisovatel. A ono nic: spisovatel se nám vůbec neobtěžuje. Je to z pohodlnosti? Aby čtenář nebyl zklamán případnou banalitou? Nebo ze strachu, aby se vyhnul možným logickým nesrovnalostem?

Tohle bylo opravdu strašidelný! Autorka má velmi bohatý jazyk, to mě dost potěšilo. Četlo se mi to dobře, na rozdíl od jiných recenzentů jsem se stylem knihy neměla nejmenší problém.
Popisy atmosféry vás hned vtáhnou do temného lesa, do sálajícího žáru léta i do podivné vesnice, ze které není úniku.

I won a copy of this book, so thank you to the publisher for sending it to me.

I always feel really bad about giving a less than positive review on a book because it takes a lot to write and put your work out there, so let me start by saying this book would probably be awesome for some people. The cover itself is beautiful and the story was descriptive and imaginative and I would recommend at least a one time read to see if it works for you.

That being said...this book was a bit of a slog for me, I really had trouble getting through each chapter much less finishing it. I don't know if it was the way the print was laid out or just the sheer amount of thought vomit of each character (it really feels like being in the chaotic thoughts of each of the characters for most of the story) but I kept having to go back over and over text because it was like I was zoning out or something. And I NEVER do that with books. Perhaps it's because it was originally written in Czech so there is a barrier between writing styles.

The characters, to me, are not likeable at all. They are gross both physically and just in human nature. I'm all for flawed characters but if there is nothing about one that evokes empathy it's difficult to feel invested in what happens to any of them.

Absolutely chilling.
The book is masterfully written, the language is highly stylized, but not in a way that would seem unnecessary or forced. The language is brutally direct and descriptive, yet also highly figurative and ornamental. Although the book could be classified into the "modern reimagining of fairy-tale as horror" genre, it is also much more. Mostly, I think, it is a well-executed exploration of loneliness, where the inner world seeps into the physical, with sickness, contamination, dirtiness and disgust ever present. We see the disgustingness in all the things often romanticized, like the countryside, or children. Or human relationships.
This book really didn't make me feel a single positive thing, while often making me feel that what I was reading was an extremely accurate description of the human psyche. Would not recommend reading this if you're in a bad place mentally.

I was really really excited for this book because I love folk horror (in particular I had an awesome folk horror experience last december when I watched fréwaka and have been chasing that high ever since). this was the second time I've ever used my college library's ILL system and I was terrified when I picked this up from there and learned it would be due in six days (when I also had a paper to write). I then hardly read any of it the first two days I should have been reading it and freaked out last night and ended up reading 100 pages and finishing it this morning.
ANYWAY ultimately I really liked some aspects of this but really disliked some others. I liked the atmosphere and i was THRILLED to discover that "the werewolf" by angela carter made an appearance because that was my absolute favorite story in the bloody chamber. I liked how rooted it was in fairy tales, too, and the various iterations of little red riding hood were interesting to compare. (I wrote and then deleted a very long tangent about little red riding hood here.)
on the other hand, I didn't really like the writing style... this is of course just a personal opinion, but I kept thinking it would win me over and it never really did. unfortunate. I also felt like it was a lot more steeped in human misery and cruelty than I was expecting, in particular the ending: it's a folk horror, so of course there's going to be some strange ritual at the end, and the dust jacket mentions villagers in strange costumes, and there's this repeated motif of the wolf, and you think it's going to be something much more fantastic than it is, but ultimately it's just the men of the village having violent and voyeuristic impulses and torturing the main characters and filming it all. idk, it totally was just personal preference but I was really disappointed in that! everyone's head was a terrible and miserable place to be, no matter who was narrating (except maybe bohumila), and until the end there wasn't even much suspense to be a respite.

Bohužel tato kniha se mi moc nelíbila. Do knihy jsem se nemohl začíst a na mnoha místech byla pro mě nezáživná. Na knihu jsem se těšil, ale asi to není kniha pro mě. Na tuto knihu jsem se nechal nalákat od booktoberů na YouTube a také jsem knihu viděl na Instagramu. Autorka má specifický styl vyprávění. Používá krátké, úsečné věty. Postavy mi nebyly sympatické. Snad jsem závěr románu pochopil správně, ale za sebe osobně knihu nedoporučuji.

Upřímně řečeno by se dalo říci, že mne kniha zklamala. Na knihu jsem se těšil, ale nic převratného jsem od této knihy nedostal. Je vidět, že autorka umí pracovat s jazykem, ale bohužel mě tento příběh neoslovil a bohužel je mi to líto. Autorka vystudovala bohemistiku a v letech 2014 – 2017 vedla katedru bohemistiky v Oxfordu. Knihu hodnotím na 50 %, ale do DK se přikláním spíše ke 2*.

Jedná se o vesnický román. Manželský pár BOHUMIL a BOHUMILA a jejich mentálně postižený syn se přestěhují z Prahy do malé vesnice a jednoho dne dojde k určité události.. Kniha má 2 části. Závěr první části byl napínavý a myslel jsem si, že druhá část bude lepší, ale bohužel se to vezlo na stejné vlně.

Kniha má nádhernou obálku! Tato obálka mě zaujala na první pohled a možná by si tato obálka zasloužila i nějaké ocenění. Je originální.

Hodně rozporuplná kniha, která je však velmi čtivá. Začátku dominuje popis života na vesnici a naznačování, co bude zápletkou a kdo jsou hlavní postavy. Když se dočteme do poloviny knihy, začne kniha zajímavě napínat spoustou nevyřčených či naznačených věcí. Doposud 3-4*

A pak nastupuje ta rozporuplnost. Napínání pokračuje nepřiměřeně dlouho, stále se kupí otázky a náznaky a čtení nenabízí odměnu, tedy nějaké odpovědi či rozuzlení. A jak tak čtenář nemá odpovědi a přemýšlí nad tím, co a jak (ne)dává smysl, dojde i na nějaké nepravděpodobné situace (Skupina "zařídila", že to policie nebude řešit, jedním záhadně dobře načasovaným telefonátem. Pokud to nebyla náhoda, tak celá policejní stanice kryla vraždy? A každý rok? A se skartací dokumentů?) Na konci knihy je naznačeno hodně, ale skutečně vyřčeno málo. Zbytek je na čtenáři. Toto není můj styl.

Originální styl psaní - krátké, úderné věty, je toho hodně nevyřčeného a čtenář si musí věci domýšlet. Tváří se to jako vesnický psycho-horor s folklorním pozadím. Více mě to ale zaujalo jako psychologický rozbor rozpadu jednoho manželství a příběh o úskalí výchovy mentálně postiženého dítěte - celou dobu mě mrazilo z toho, že se nedozvíme jeho jméno, je nazýván pouze "klukem". Nemůžu říct, jestli se mi to opravdu líbilo, spíše mě to hodně zaujalo a přála bych si více takových českých počinů. Možná to oslaví příznivce Jezera od Biancy Bellové, taky je tu hodně lidské bídy a beznaděje. Nominace na Magnesia literu za 2022 se mi zdá oprávněná.

Slow start and not in the fun creeping dread sort of way. Horrible characters in both the “I don’t like them” as well as the “what the hell are their motivations” ways. At its core, while it masquerades as a reimagining of little red riding hood, in reality it is little more than an insiders vs outsiders story.

Rychlá, ale hodně hutná, temná pohádka. A vlastně by ani nebyla potřeba karkulovská zápletka, tíha vesnické nudy a nefunkčního partnerského života (plus dítě, které je víc přítěží) byla depresivní sama o sobě. Říhová umí vystavět atmosféru, ale vlastně i příběh. A navíc kvalitním jazykem.

"Nebezpečný svět vesnice pronikl do nebezpečného světa lesa. Padly hranice, lidské se spojilo se zvířeckým, mohlo by se na první pohled zdát. Slunce slabě svítilo. V koruně stromu melodicky, mírumilovně zacvrlikal pták." - str. 232
