Nellie Joanne Kinnan is an Advanced Cadet in the Black Core Program at the Detta training center. Weapons and violence are second nature to this twelve-year-old, but she is never exactly sure what it is she is being trained for. Nellie is a dedicated and skilled cadet. She knows she wants to serve the Goddess and the Empire. But there is so much that she doesn't understand. When a weapons training session brings her face-to-face with her twin, Nellie's world is thrown into turmoil. Suddenly she questions her commitment to the violence that has dominated her young life. As she slowly learns to trust her rebellious twin, she comes to realize that much of what she has been taught about life in both the Interior and the Outbacks is not true. Faced with this reality, Nellie must find new weapons and new strength in her struggle to continue to serve the Goddess. In this exciting sequel to Flux, Beth Goobie has once again created a cast of memorable characters within a story that will both fascinate and challenge readers.

Beth Goobie is best known for her quirky and dark young adult novels. She's published several of them, beginning in 1994. Her novel Before Wings won the Canadian Library Association's Young Adult Book Award in 2000, and was chosen by young readers for the Best Books list of the American Library Association.Much of the turmoil in Goobie's life has been laid bare in two books for adult readers, Scars of Light, which is autobiographical poetry, and The Only-Good Heart, a book of short stories. Both are built on the theme of cults, abuse, and emotional torture. They were, she says, both therapeutic for herself and a warning to others.

Nellie is an Advanced Cadet in the Black Core Program at the Detta training center, where weapons and violence are just part of her normal life. She’s told that her training will serve the Goddess and the Empire, but the cadets are trained not to think but rather just to obey. However, when her training brings her face-to-face with a twin she never knew existed, her rebellious sister begins to poke holes in her seemingly perfect world and awaken her to the destruction and lies she’s been taught her entire life. A fascinating and dark story about a totalitarian world where memories can be instantly erased, violence is encouraged, and families are a thing of the past, this sequel to Flux is not without flaws. The astrology, caste system, and religion in the book is confusing and left mostly unexplained, with feeble attempts at the end to patch everything together, which takes away from the intensity of the futuristic, totalitarian world gone awry and Nellie’s struggle to understand her own identity and place.

Fixed, by Beth Goobie, is the sequal to Flux. In this book, Nellie Joanne Kinnan is a top rate cadet, but struggling to keep it that way. She likes causing mischeif in her classes. She also doesnt like to do what she's told. Her best friend Lierin had to be 'released' one day because she lost a hand in the maze run. She is then forcefully made to completely forget her and then no one ever remembers her. One day during a maze run, Nellie meets her twin, Nellie Joan. Her life is then changed forever.

My connection would be for Nellie Joanne. I didnt want to ever forget my great uncle when he died. But many people said it's best to just move on in your life. In other words, some of them were telling me just to forget it.

I would give this book four stars because at times, it is kind of boring. Not to mention confusing. Other than that its great. A one thumbs up book.
