Gods walk among us. They are powerful. They are immortal. They are…bored.

Every century, they create a deadly spectacle—the Wishing Game—where mortals compete for the ultimate prize: one wish granted by the gods themselves. But there's a catch. If a participant dies in the game, they forfeit their immortal soul.

Lucero Archibald lost everything. When she receives an invitation to the Wishing Game, she is desperate enough to accept it. Her wish? Bring back her beloved from the dead.

Thrown into a world of ruthless competitors and treacherous gods, Luce forms an unlikely alliance with three others: Thea, a bubbly self-described harpy; Cerenios, her demon-hunter brother who shields more secrets than swords; and Ze, a cocky and insufferable soldier who seems determined to challenge her at every step.

As Luce faces increasingly deadlier trials and forces beyond her comprehension, she must decide how far she’s willing to go. With every trial, the price of victory grows steeper, and soon she’ll have to answer the ultimate question:

Is one wish worth her immortal soul?

Okay, I have NEVER seen a review section this dense with 5-star raves — like, every top review is basically screaming "This book changed my life!!" and I’m sitting here like, hold up, what planet are you reading this from?

Genuine question: what do you think when you read the blurb? Because honestly, when I saw it, I was expecting this epic, magical dark world vibe. Something like Phantasma or Squid Game with gods and high stakes and all that fantasy jazz.

But noooo, instead it starts with Luce, a basically normal human who’s been in a car crash, lost her rich husband, and wakes up to find her inheritance swiped by some shady relatives. Then she gets invited to this Wishing Game thing, which supposedly is gonna be a wild ride.

So... the game? Disappointing af. Like, where’s the fire? Where’s the edge? I don’t get why people are hyping it up. I expected intense trials, gods scheming, mortal danger, but it felt kinda meh. And the writing? Super weird. Not bad exactly, but it felt like someone tried to mix contemporary prose with fantasy drama and got stuck somewhere awkward in the middle. You know that vibe where the style just doesn’t fit the mood? Yeah, that.

Luce herself spends a frustrating amount of time stuck in her own head, reminiscing about her late husband—so much so that she actually has a sex scene with him in her memories & another with his ghost? Like, c’mon, what am I even saying? Give me a break.

WHY DID THIS NEED TO BE 750+ pages?? Like genuinely, you could’ve chopped 300 and not lost a single plot point. I swear it dragged in so many places for no reason.

The pacing? Slow AF. I was this close to DNFing it. But then around 60-70%, the story started to pick up just enough to keep me hooked. Even then, it was a rollercoaster of ups and downs—never really consistent.

This is my second book by Veronica Lancet after Barbi and the Villain, and honestly, I’m torn. Mixed feelings all around. Not sure if I’ll continue the series or just leave it hanging because, well, curiosity is a cruel friend.

So yeah, 2.5 stars from me. It had potential, but it didn’t quite get there. If you want a slow burn with some messy feels and a fantasy twist that kicks in way too late, maybe it’s for you. Otherwise, meh.

━━━━━━━━━━━⊱♡⊰━━━━━━━━━━

Oh, absolutely—nothing says “epic dark fantasy” like 750 pages of grieving over a dead hubby, awkward ghost sex, and a Wishing Game that moves at glacier speed. RTC, because I'm still trying to figure out what I just read.

When it comes to Veronica Lancet, I know exactly what I’m signing up for, an eccentric FMC, a socially awkward and unintentionally rude MMC, a major plot twist near the end, and a hefty page count, usually over 700 pages. This book checked all those boxes, so no complaints there.

That said, while I did enjoy the read, something about it felt a little too predictable and kinda mediocre. Weirdly enough, despite the hefty length, it never felt that long. It was super easy to read, maybe too easy, considering how much it leaned on mystery and suspense. The predictability dulled the tension a bit, so the plot didn’t grip me as much as it probably should have.

As for the fantasy elements, it was meh. I expected more, but I eventually tuned that part out and focused on the relationship, which (luckily) I really enjoyed.

Now, Ze. He totally stole the show for me. I’m a sucker for awkward male leads who are rude without even realizing it, and Ze was just the right mix of intentional and accidental asshole in the best way. I adored him. The FMC, on the other hand, didn’t really click for me. She kind of rubbed me the wrong way the whole time.

And let’s talk about the little things that carried this book, like the healing saliva trope??? 🤤 YES MA’AM. It was weirdly hot watching this man spit on her like that 😭. And I loved how desperate Ze was for her to like him, he basically forced her to see him as nice, and I was eating it up.

"Tell me I am nice," he suddenly demands, startling me. "What?"
"Say it," he prompts me. "You're... nice?"

Also, that subtle creepy vibe Ze gave off? 😙🤌. It stayed subtle until the big plot twist revealed what he really was, but I have a soft spot for paranormal creatures who are just a little bit wrong in the head.

"If they insult you, they insult me." "And if you are the one they insult?" "I do not matter," he replies evenly. "Why would you not matter?" "Because I do not." He shrugs. "You matter to me." I smile at him. His eyes widen. He ponders my words for a moment. "Then I matter only if I matter to you."

Despite its flaws, I still had a good time. If you’re looking for a long, immersive romance that doesn’t require too much brainpower, this one’s a solid pick.

This book was such a pleasant surprise. I went in knowing next to nothing about the plot and characters so it really was the best time figuring things out lmao. I loved it.

I love Veronica’s writing, it’s so bingeable. Kinda reminiscent of the twisted sisters. The humour is perfect and the characters are simple creatures but still so dark 😭

Luce, while being so clueless and very ‘fragile’ she still managed to not Pmo too much which I take as a win. I hated the husband parts Icel they had my eye twitching even tho he wasn’t exactly bad to her but idk he felt so off to me.

Ze was so cuteeeeee 💗💋 my murderous little care bear xx

When he has a praise kink 😝🤭 ksjshdksk he was litch adorable, she got him blushing and preening after he got those brownie points for being “nice” like stopppp u can’t make me giggle so much it’s criminal! 😫🤚

That ending tho 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 wasn’t expecting that plot twist 🤧 prayin there’s some proper reason for it lmao bc if not he’s got some real heavy grovelling to do 😭

ೃ⁀➷ Thank you so much Veronica for the ARC! ♥︎

I. AM. OBSSESSED. I NEED THE SEQUEL. ASAP.

Veronica Lancet has done it again—The Wishing Game is nothing short of a masterpiece. She has crafted a breathtaking, emotionally charged fantasy that blends romance, danger, mythology, and raw humanity in the most electrifying way. Her writing is, as always, impeccable. She has this incredible ability to pull you into a story from the very first page and keep you completely captivated until the very end. I was hooked—utterly and completely.

This book had everything I love: unforgettable characters, a gripping plot, delicious twists, and just the right amount of dark mystery. Veronica knows exactly how to build suspense and tension, and she never fails to surprise me. Every time I thought I had things figured out, she flipped the script. She truly never fails to astound me.

The world-building is divine—literally. The pantheon of gods that governs this realm feels vast and ancient, with motives as mysterious as they are brutal. The “Wishing Game” itself is a high-stakes contest that combines magical trials, clever strategy, and emotional resilience. Every chapter peels back new layers of danger and desire, and you won’t be able to stop turning the pages.

The characters are another shining point. Luce is a revelation—wounded yet unwavering, cynical yet compassionate. She teams up with an unforgettable group: Thea, a bold and brash harpy with secrets; Cerenios, a mysterious demon hunter with a protective streak; and Ze, the cocky, brooding soldier who gradually reveals a side of himself that will wreck you in the best way. Their chemistry is off the charts, and the slow-burn tension between Luce and Ze will make your heart ache (and race). Every interaction feels earned, every emotional beat hits hard.

Lancet’s prose is immersive and lyrical, yet sharp and modern—perfectly suited to a world where gods walk among mortals and fate is forged through fire. The themes—loss, longing, vengeance, love—are explored with nuance, and the plot never drags. Just when you think you know what’s coming, Lancet throws a curveball that changes everything.

In conclusion, The Wishing Game, isn’t just a fantasy romance—it’s a deeply human story of fighting for what you love, even in the face of gods. It’s intense, sexy, smart, and so, so addictive. If you're a fan of emotionally rich, action-packed stories with morally grey characters, sizzling slow-burn romance, and heart-stopping stakes, this book is your next obsession.
I can’t wait for the sequel—and I need it now.

Veronica Lancet is one of my favorite authors so I wasn’t shocked that I became engulfed in this story.

The Wishing Game.

We are thrown into a world of gods and deities like the human, Luce who was in a terrible accident that took the life of her husband.
As her life is crumbling, she gets a magical invitation to play a game, The Wishing Game.. that will grant your biggest wish. And Luce just wants her husband back.

She’s teamed up with some of most powerful Gods in existence.

This is a journey. Not exactly a romance, yet. It’s full of immersive world building, politics, action, humor, and addictive characters.

Ze is a powerful deity. A commander. An executioner. He’s feared by all. Full of arrogance and awkwardness.
Sir Sparkles. He’s weirdly attached to Luce even if she is a puny human. He can’t keep away from her.
And it’s the big question.. why?

"I told you before, human. You are my person. That means I protect you."

Do we hate him? Do we love him? He’s the definition of nature vs nurture.

“He's lived his life as he was conditioned to, only existing, never truly living. For that alone, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt—give him a chance that no one else seemingly has.”

As the story goes on, we learn more about Luce and I definitely have theory’s on what’s going on.
I know Veronica Lancet loves writing about reincarnation so … I’m thinking…

"I might be immune to all poisons in the universe. But it appears there is one thing I am not immune to," he murmurs softly. "You."
"Are you calling me a poison?" I clear my throat as I attempt a joke, yet my question comes out throaty, inviting... "Oh, you are the most potent poison of all. And I have yet to taste you."

Leaves off in an insane turn of events, truth bombs, and one hell of a cliffhanger. I’m going mad over it! I cannot wait for the next one. Explanations are needed. lol

The Wishing Game is Veronica Lancet's brand new trilogy. How does she do it? I don’t know, but I hope she continues because this is another winner. I don’t believe I’ve read anything I’ve disliked from her. She can write mafia, horror with gore, and fantasy. I love them all, and the Wishing Game was exceptional.

The Wishing Game is described as Squid Games meets Ancient Gods if that gives readers some perspective. There may be some familiarity, as this is set in the same universe as the War of Sins trilogy. I was fully immersed in this world from the first few pages. Yes, it’s long, about 752 pages, but all of it is worth it. Luce’s character, as well as all the others she interacts with. Especially Ze. I loved the concept of the Wishing Game, and the reason why Luce was participating was both emotional and weaved with mysterious twists that only Veronica can deliver.

As The Wishing Game is only Book 1 of a trilogy, it leaves a cliffhanger that has my mind tossing around all different scenarios of what everything could mean. I expect no less.

Right now I don't know what to write: this book put me on edge and made me read it
unstoppable… definitely one of my favorites by Veronica so far. In this book all the characters we
saw sometimes in her books, but now we have a different approach to them. Luce starts the
story recovering from a car accident that makes her a widow. To complete the tragedy she starts
to be wanted by police. In the middle of the chaos, an invitation by a series of trials in which the
prize was ‘your deepest wish’ falls to her hand and, with zero things to lose, Luce embarks in this
game, clueless to the danger that could follow her. The premise is amazing, but of course,
Veronica always makes the best plot and characters, so you can’t stop reading. Ze is my top 3
male of Veronica’s and I love the dynamics between Luce and Ze in this book. The ending broke
my heart a little and I can’t wait to see how the story will develop.

if i could describe this book in one word it would be phenomenal. i really don’t think veronica is capable of writing anything less than perfection. her creativity as an author truly shines so bright with this story and it’s characters.

i genuinely did not want to put this book down. from the very beginning, sooooo many things are happening! and while i can imagine this might be overwhelming to some because we are given a lot of information at times, veronica does an excellent job of explaining things in a way that keeps your interest piqued. the world building was done so well and really just sets you up to be fully immersed in this magical story of gods, monsters, and every creature in between.

i absolutely loved our characters. our fmc has such a down to earth personality and watching her interactions with our big, bad mmc were just completely heartwarming. we love a dark, broody villain with a soft spot only for one special girl. and that’s exactly what we get in this story!

i can’t remember the last time an mmc had me smiling this hard while i read! there is just something so special about ze. i genuinely laughed out loud so many times during this book because of him. how can a man be so bad and so endearing at the same time?

and while the humor is top notch, this book also explores a lot of darker subjects. our fmc has a very tragic past while also dealing with a lot of grief in her present life as well. her journey is truly one i can’t wait to continue to watch unfold. i need book two right now! 😩🖤

The Veronica Lancet I trust! 🩷
DEFINITELY THE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR ⭐️

The Wishing Game is truly a masterpiece. It was breathtaking, fantasy blends with romance, danger, morally grey characters, mythology and raw humanity in the best possible way 🤍
From the first page this book keep you captivated until the very beginning. I was hooked and BEYOND OBSESSED!

Lucero and her husband are in a terrible accident. He dies and his gold digging family has concocted a plot to cut Luce out of everything that her husband have left her. Now, she’s homeless and hunted by her husband’s family. And then she receives a mysterious invitation to The Wishing Game and she accepts when she was alone and homeless. If she wins, she will have any wish she wants granted. She teams up with Thea, Cer and Ze.
And our story begins🤭

In the War of Sins, especially in the last book, Lucero was my favorite character. Because she was a such beautiful friend. And I always wanted her book. It was worth the wait!

NIKKI WHAT THE HECK IS THIS?? I didn't know what this book was about at first. I'm screaming because of the plot and the cliffhangers. I'm still in shock, I was on Nikki's side at first but whenever Ze comes on the chat... I'm swooning 😶‍🌫️

Still deep in thought, I feel tendrils of hot air bathe my face. I lift my gaze back to his. I blink slowly. His eyes... Are they...purple?
My lips part in wonder. Bringing my hand to his face, I brush away a few rebel curls from his cheek before I mold my palm to his skin, tracing the area around his eyes. Wow... I've never seen eyes this color before. But...how?

I'M GUILTY FOR LIKING YOU, ZE✌🏻✌🏻

“Of course," he replies with a huff. "You are my person. I will not let anything happen to you."
“You mean I'm your teammate," I correct him lightly.
“You are my person," he reiterates, his voice firm.”

“I hate people," he mutters under his breath. But as his gaze meets mine, his eyes widen slightly. "Not you," he quickly amends. "You are not people."
“Really?" I ask, amused. "What am I then?"
“Mine," he answers simply, unflinchingly.”

“Do not turn your back to me, human," he calls out.
I don't answer, tuning out his words.
“You are not allowed to ignore me," he continues, coming closer.
I feel him lie down next to me, heat radiating from his body.
Squeezing my eyes shut, I will myself to sleep.
“Human! Luce," he drones on, calling my name and trying in vain to get my attention. It's too late, however. Words have been spoken, and my heart is still raw from his behavior.”

“Just say the word, and I will destroy them." He leans in to murmur in my ear.
“W-what?"
“If they insult you, they insult me."
“And if you are the one they insult?"
“I do not matter," he replies evenly.
“Why would you not matter?"
“Because I do not." He shrugs.
“You matter to me." I smile at him.
His eyes widen. He ponders my words for a moment.
“Then I matter only if I matter to you.”

I really don’t know what to say because I’m in love and shocked.
The ending broke my heart a bit and I can’t wait to see how the story will develop. I’m here for them! 🩵

5 “I’m so fucking confused I need book 2 and a therapy session immediately” stars!!

Thank you for the ARC (I practically begged for it lol), Veronica, I love you for life!
Omfg this book!

I normally can write my review as I go, get quotes, and just pause between moments to write my thoughts, but I couldn’t put it down!

I was engaged and confused from the jump. Luce never has it easy, I see. The prompt was so interesting and intriguing. Knowing Veronica and how she writes her MCs, I was already suspicious of everything and everyone not being who they seemed.

Ze was everything and more. His reactions to Luce, her pain, her past, her grief... he wanted her to think only of him, and when that wasn't the case, he'd find a way for it to be. He wanted to avenge her, even if the culprit was already dead, he'd find a way to still kill/torture him. When Luce fell asleep on him, he'd act like I do when my cat falls asleep on top of me, I'd rather die than move and wake it up (duh, I'm the chosen one in that moment). He'd pack chocolate for her because he knew she loved it, he'd bring it into the weirdest moments ever...hiking in the jungle? Chocolate. Mid-secret mission? Chocolate. She was mad at him? Chocolate. He also would explain stuff to her, the politics, the specifics about laws, the distinction between demons…he always makes sure she knows the information fully, not halfassed explanations like Thea or Cer did.

His being sort of the most powerful god like being out there and her being a human made for the funniest and most interesting dynamic. This man said, “You are now my cute stray cat,” and though he was giving the best compliment ever…And not going to lie, it would work on me, I fear. He did research by reading “billionaire romance” books because she said she liked those…this fucking man omg, tell me you wouldn't fold like a cheap lawn chair immediately? And of course she wouldn't realize that he keeps mentioning he’s rich because she said that’s what she wants in her romance books…she’s blind as fuck!

His past is so muddled, and he's been alive and serving the Supremes for so long he didn't even know his birthday...and what does this man do? He asks her to pick one for him and then gives every single excuse as to why it can’t be in any month/day but the same as hers…and my feelings for him grew ten times more.
And of course he’s fine as fuck!

Lucero, Luce, was blind...sure, she was grieving her recently dead hubby, but woman, get over him already! (It has been like two-three weeks...come on) She had that fine man, so into her and so attentive and caring (he has no rizz and zero manners, but gooood intentions okay?) and what does she do? Friendzone the fuck out of him...while also starting to fall for him...while also having the most romantic-relationship looking friendship ever... Like come on, she’s washing his hair and he’s so damn happy and the moment his hair is done he turn around and demands he washes hers...

Luce was so brave and so determined. She was headstrong and loyal. I loved that she had the patience to get to know Ze, to look past his gruff mean side and saw his need for love, his confusion with feelings...she saw him, or at least who I think is the real him.

And let me tell you, the plot on this fucking book will have you confused, screaming, theorizing, texting your friends and making detective boards on your walls trying to figure out which way is up. Lets just say I need book two (and three why lie) immediately. Like yesterday.

Some raw thoughts without spoilers:
-This mf just said “you are dead now, but not forever…I’ll fix that” casually
-He acted like I do when my cat falls asleep on top of me “I’m not moving until he does” BRO I LOVE HIM
-He packed her chocolate…HE PACKED HER CHOCOLATE
-Going from “human” to “little human” MY FEELS AGAIN
-She keeps friendzoning him!!! Like I understand, her hubby JUST died but my heart hurts for him…but also, does he know something we/she doesn’t about the husband and him…
-54% in…WHAT THE FUCK
-I’m so confused I can’t even
-I too would fold immediately for chocolate
-He said “girl I need two pearls…here, cry some more”
-Let’s go on a date…to hell!!
-95% WHAT!? THE?!? FUCK?!!?!
-“Ze. My friend” FRIEND?!? Are you kidding me bruh?

Quotes:

"I am not a king—yet. You may call me my liege. But for you, sir will suffice."

“I am nice to you.”

“You are my person. I will not let anything happen to you.”
“You mean I’m your teammate,”
“You are my person,”

"Let me help you build a new past, present, and future. Let me love you until you love yourself, too, Luce. Just... Let me love you."

“What am I then?”
“Mine”

"Hello, little human," he purrs into my mind.

"You are also the only one who has had the privilege to be touched by these lips. You are welcome."

"You are not my enemy, Luce. I do not care what you are. You are not the enemy. Understand?"

"Not only are you the first female I am taking on a date, but you are also getting an exclusive tour of hell. No one but me would have been able to arrange something like this,"

"Oh, you are the most potent poison of all. And I have yet to taste you."

"You are staring," he murmurs.
"W-what?"
"Do not stop. I like it."

"Then I matter only if I matter to you."

Also, if you read this far...i wrote this review and didn't read it, so if some parts make sense and others are just raw emotion...roll with it and read the book, you'll understand. AND if you read it, pls pls pls message me! Your reactions while reading, your final thoughts...I love that stuff!

This is already the fourth fantasy series by this Veronika Lancet. The fourth fantasy that I absolutely love again, and that blew me away once more. Veronika always comes up with incredibly interesting and tangled plots, and there’s always something unexpected that pops up. I thought I was used to it by now. I thought I was ready for anything—but every time, I end up shocked again. And this time, guess what? I was completely shocked!

Plot: The main character loses her husband, and under mysterious circumstances, she later receives a secret invitation to a game. The wishing game. By coincidence, she ends up participating in the game and learns that the winners will be granted a wish. Any wish in the world can come true—and our heroine plans to bring her husband back to life. Again, by chance (or maybe not), Luce ends up in a team with gods who aren’t exactly supposed to be in the game. One of them is actually the army’s commander and the “executioner” of their world. Now they go through challenges together in different worlds.

Ze (the commander, aka the new love interest)—everyone sees him as a cruel, heartless killer. But for our heroine, he tries to be kind. Not that he’s succeeding all that much, but he tries. The question is: Why? Why is he only different with Luce? The chemistry between the characters is undeniable, but the main heroine still loves her husband and doesn’t fully grasp what’s been happening right under her nose.

I’m telling you, this book is one big series of whys and whats
Why does she have those tattoos?
Why is he so kind to her?
Why did she get that letter?
Why is he cursed?
Why did she end up in the game?
What did happen in the past?
What is wrong with him?
What is even going on?!

Ze, with his awkward attempts to be nice to her and earn extra points, completely won me over. Realizing that he’s actually the villain in another book series was a bit unsettling at first, but I pretty quickly understood why he is the way he is. Yes, his actions are brutal, but they make sense—and there are reasons behind them.

Book one ended, as always, with a glimpse of the truth… but without any real explanation!
In short, the book—as always—is a solid 5/5!

A Deadly Game, A Magical World, and a Villain Worth Loving

First of all, I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to Booksprout and the author herself, Veronica Lancet, for generously providing me with a free advanced reader copy. This review is entirely voluntarily, and I want to emphasize that it truly reflects my genuine emotions and thoughts about the story.

Star rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice rating: No Comment

“The Wishing Game” captivated me from the very first page. Imagine the high-stakes intensity of the hit tv-show Squid Game combined with fantasy, some romance, and that unmistakable Veronica Lancet magic. And you get an incredible combination. Her ever-expanding universe continues to impress me, and her signature writing style, filled with slow-burn tension, powerful foreshadowing, emotionally rich characters, and aching yearning, is utterly addictive.

In “The Wishing Game”, I was completely absorbed in Luce’s emotionally complicated story. She's a mortal caught in the company of gods, competing in the perilous Wishing Game. With her eternal soul on the line, she faces impossible trials for a single, deeply personal goal: to bring her late husband back to life, whether through resurrection or reincarnation. Her journey is one of love, sacrifice, and unshakable resolve, making her a compelling, strong, self-assured and deeply relatable character. Her fierce loyalty and willingness to fight for the people she cares about resonated with me on a personal level. Her dynamic with Ze, Cer, and Thea only further highlighted her resilience and emotional depth.

And then there's Ze also known as Azerius or Sir Sparkles according to Luce, who’s a powerful god full of arrogance. It may sound wild, but I saw parts of myself in him. His thoughts, his actions for “his person”, and the way he's kind of misunderstood all made him such a compelling character. If you're a fan of morally gray or even fully dark villains, you're going to fall hard for him. His unwavering devotion to Luce, layered personality, and smoldering presence were some of the most gripping aspects of the story.

Their chemistry is undeniable. The push and pull between them, the longing, the tension, and the emotional conflicts were so intense I couldn’t tear myself away. Their banter had me giggling, kicking my feet and kept me completely invested. There are “no spicy” scenes, yet the tension is definitely there. I kept hoping Luce would let go of the past so Azerius could truly step into her life but perhaps in the near future. The revelations at the end, the plot and possible romance gives the sequel so much potential and I simply cannot wait.

If only I could find an Azerius in my life. The kind of person who heals you (IYKYK), protects you time and time again, and gives you a cow just because you love steak. Acts of service is definitely his love language. Oh, to be loved like that.

If you’re a fan of the grumpy and sunshine dynamic, super slow-burn romance, and emotionally charged storytelling, “The Wishing Game” is a must-read. With engaging plotlines, deeply layered relationships, and a setup for a sequel that already has me counting down the days, it’s one of my top reads this year.

Veronica Lancet has solidified her place as one of my favorite authors. My journey with her books began with Fairydale, and since then, I’ve been hooked. I eagerly anticipate everything she releases, past and future alike. Being a part of her ARC team is an absolute honor, and supporting her work, which continues to inspire and enthrall, means the world to me.

1.5🌶️ thank you so much Veronica for this ARC! that ending actually has my mind spinning out of control. our fmc is strong as hell and has been through so much shit but continues to be a light and see the positive in as much as she can. i cannot wait to see what she’s capable of in the next book and to continue with her character development. our mmc is morally black as hell (as i expect and LOVE with Veronica’s mmcs). she never fails to have me fall in love with them, even when the red flags are waving big and bright in my face. i have absolutely no idea where this story is going, and even when i thought i did, i was so wrong and the twists would twist. im just as confused as the fmc (although i am partial to wanting one more than the other). idk if i can even say i hate love triangles anymore, although im not exactly sure this is one? and yet it feels like it is at the same time?? idk, but i loved this and i can’t wait for the next one and this one isn’t even out in the world yet. 😅 i HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who loves romantasy with some dark elements to it. lovely world building, beautiful characters who have soul deep depth to them, urban fantasy, tortured mmc, grumpy/sunshine, and as always, a romance at its core.

Hmmmm, what would I do for gaining one single wish…how far would I go to get the one thing my heart desires most??For our main character, Luce, seems like quite a lot. Like, competing in a game of the gods for her life. She would do basically anything to bring back the love of her life….

I am just so in love with this universe that VL has created. I really love how all of her books follow a lot of the same tropes and writing style. (one true love, eternal souls, slow burn, witty humor, tons of banter, gods and demons, touch her and die, plot twist) While at the same time, each book has its own unique feel. With The Wishing Game we get to experience Luce and Ze’s relationship journey. Ze, who is a very, serious, intense and…Rich (as he would have you know) villain in the House of Cryos books. Luce is, well, a “mere helpless human”, with a soft heart. This is Grumpy/Sunshine to the max. It’s soooo interesting to get a new perspective on our villain. I cannot wait to see where his story goes. This one is a bit lighter than some of the other books, but it certainly had its moments that got me misty eyed. Even though all the books have secrets, plot twists and foreshadowing, TWG is a bit extra in that front. It’s really what kept me going forward through the 700+ pages of this beast of a fantasy romance book. I just HAD to keep reading to find out more, and discover the truth. And, also, no big surprise here, but….its a cliffhanger. Dang it! Veronica, I neeeeed the next book! 🥹

This is an extreme slow burn! There is a lot of information provided throughout the book about the universe. It was helpful that I’ve previously read all published books from House of Cryos and Barbi and the Villian. So this information was more of a reminder and less first contact. But because of the many explanations, you can absolutely start with TWG.

Favorite things 😍

-🤔Just how many mermaids can Ze make cry?🧜‍♀️
-🫣 Ze reading romance novels for Luce, and ANNOTATING with highlights and notes! 📝
-🔥 When he takes you on a first date, and it’s to Hell, and it’s a winner 🙌🏻
-🐄 Or, when he wants to feed you, so he brings you the smallest, cutest, MOST expensive cow ever, since you love steak…but you name it Belinda and keep her as a pet.

Thank you so much Veronica Lancet for sending me this ARC!

The Wishing Game is the first book in a new Fantasy Romance trilogy and it has everything I love in this genre and what I came to expect from Veronica, I absolutely loved Luce and Ze’s story and already can’t wait for book 2.

After the death of her beloved husband, Luce is willing to do anything to get him back - including participating in a mysterious game where failure to win means losing her soul. Teaming up with some supernatural beings, she wants to win by any means, but soon she realizes not everything is as she believed and she can’t keep her distance from the dangerous and mysterious Ze, one of her allies.

It’s a simple fact that if Veronica writes it, I’m going to love but OMG she really outdid herself with this book. She created a truly fascinating world that I loved exploring more of, while it’s not necessary to read her other series to enjoy this one, I love how all her books are loosely connected and that we get to explore so many new places with each new book. The plot was perfectly paced and had me hooked from the very first page, there are so many mysteries and secrets I couldn’t wait to uncover and those plot twists and cliffhanger had my jaw on the floor. I was really curious about Luce after shortly meeting her in another book and I really loved her here, she is so strong after everything she went through and I loved how she was willing to do everything for those she loves. Ze… he is such a complex and complicated character, I’m not going to say much to avoid spoilers, but he really grew on me and I ended up loving him (despite myself because he was a villain in Veronica’s other series and I hated him), the way he wanted to take care of and please Luce was so cute at times and his inability to understand sarcasm and human sayings was hilarious and led to some laugh out loud moments. I also really liked Thea and Cer and hope to get more of them in the next book.

The Wishing Game is a phenomenal fantasy romance book, I absolutely loved it and recommend it to everyone. Book 2 can’t come soon enough!

This book just solidified why Veronica Lancet is a ‘god tier’ author for me. This book was nothing short of spectacular!

From the very beginning you feel like you’re immersed into a movie that you’re watching play out in your mind and it has you on the edge of your seat not knowing what will happen next.

The lengths Luce will go to get her husband back has no end. She is determined and so strong willed. I loved her positive attitude throughout the book and her headstrong personality when it came to the love she has for her him and the people that she considers her friends.

Ze? He was up there with Amon from Fairydale for me. I found myself laughing out loud so hard to so many different scenes because he is simply so obtuse and doesn’t understand sarcasm in the slightest!

The little bits we get to see with his tenderness for Luce had me kicking my feet the entire time! Literally the slowest of slowwww burns and I did not want it to end! Just the fact that he was so protective of her is enough to make anyone swoon.

But I’m also so invested with the side characters that I truly hope we get more from them. I need answers!

Ze meets his match
Who knew that Ze, the villain in Of Ice and Villain, would get his own book and boy do we see a side of him that is confusing the hell out of our heroine Luce. This book is from her POV so to a certain extent Ze is still an enigma but there is no doubt in the reader’s mind as to what exactly he feels towards Luce.
The book starts off with the death of Luce’s husband, Nikki, the love of her life. Finding herself alive after plummeting from a bridge she retrieves a note in her pocket inviting her to The Wishing Game where the winner gets a wish they desire the most and Luce accepts the invitation so she can win and wish for Nikki to be alive once again. This is where she is joined by Thea and Cer and ultimately Ze who have their own reasons to join the game and decide to form their own group to help each other to win.
There is a lot to unpack in this book because though this book starts off seemingly simple enough, there are so many underlying aspects to the story and there is a lot happening here. The Game is just one aspect.
The different realms especially that of Aperion has been written in a detailed and creative manner which makes this book refreshingly original and a very interesting read.
Ze, the god killer, is ironically felled downed by a mere human; our heroine, Luce! It is an absolute joy to see the change in his demeanor from an apathetic, dispassionate cold blooded demon slayer/god killer, to a man who becomes so obsessed with a single minded focus to the point that if it were up to him he would wrap her up in cotton wool and wrap himself around her 24/7. However this change is only and only for Luce, and not for the rest of the kingdom or the deities. For them he’s still their nightmare. In Ze, the author has created a very complex character; both terrifying but living a lonely existence and where Luce is concerned, he shows his softer side.
Luce has not had an easy life as well. A traumatic childhood, coupled with heartbreaking loss of her husband Nikki, has forced her to undertake a perilous task that could either lead to her death.
The interactions between the two are hilarious especially Ze’s responses to her being human, therefore her behavior being irrelevant and irrational. She in turn thinks him to be uptight and views him as someone she would like to have the least amount of interest and interaction with. But along the way he falls for her hard and she’s still pining away for Nikki till almost towards the end of the book. But that’s not to say that she doesn’t develop some kind of feelings for him though she’s somewhat in denial.
There are other side plots here but they are integral to the story and they do not feel irrelevant at all. The story builds up steam towards the end and we know that something big is about to occur and that’s exactly what happens. The book ends in a cliffhanger with a bang.
The author has written a very well crafted story. It’s imaginative, with a lot of thought given into the world building. Though the book is long, it had to be because of the scope of the story and also because this world will further be explored in the following books. However this does not affect the pace of the story and it doesn’t slowed down due to events that take place during the games.
I’ve loved this author’s previous books and this doesn’t disappoint at all. I cannot end this review by comparing Ze to Marlow. Ze’s craziness is like Marlow. It just that Marlow is a happy lunatic/psycho whereas Ze is a stoic killer!

The Ending? You won't see it coming.

| fantasy romance | epic fantasy | high fantasy | the wishing game | games and trials | forced proximity | gods and mortals | Aperion | enemies to lovers | quest | plot twist | world-building | single POV | yearning | past lives | mystery | who hurt you? | touch her and dxe | spirit | forced proximity | dark fantasy | magic | intrigue | cliff-hanger | morally black | friendship |

Would I recommend this book? Yes. A resounding yes.

Is it spicy? Not yet, but the potential? Oh, it simmers with promise.

The Wishing Game unfolds in the same rich, intricate world as the House of Cryos series. You’ll meet characters here that first appear in that earlier trilogy, so if you haven’t yet, I highly recommend diving into House of Cryos first. Not only is it an incredible (and yes, unfinished) journey, but it also lays the foundation for the vast, stunning world of Aperion.

Veronica Lancet is a masterful storyteller. I fall headfirst into every one of her books, helplessly tangled in her characters, her layered worlds, her twisting plots. She balances humor, tension, and aching desire with a deft hand, building stories that pull you to the edge and keep you there. She is, without question, one of my favorite authors, and I don’t say that lightly. If you want to understand why, you’ll simply have to read her yourself.

Yes, this story starts slow, but let it cook. What seems like one kind of plot at the start will transform, deepen, and darken as you go. It begins with real-world tragedy and unfurls into a lush, sharp-edged fantasy filled with banter, yearning, and, in classic Veronica Lancet style, the delicious tension of something just out of reach, just waiting to break loose.

Trying to sum up this book in a single review feels impossible. I savored every chapter, especially those final ones, and when I hit the last page? I sat there, absolutely reeling. It leaves you on a wicked cliffhanger that has you dying for the next book. I’m honestly not sure how I’m supposed to wait for the next book. I need it quite fiercely.

For the villain lovers out there? You will feast on this. Veronica has a way of reshaping villains, making you ache for them, making you swoon over their morally ambiguous ways. There is nothing quite like a villain brought to their knees by the most unsuspecting person. The ONLY person.

If you crave dark fantasy, mystery, a quest brimming with longing, and jaw-dropping plot twists, you need to check out The Wishing Game.

Happy Reading, Friends xx

I was given an audio ARC of this book, and the premise was interesting enough that I decided to give it a try. And that’s as far as it goes – the premise was interesting enough.

In The Wishing Game, contestants compete in a deadly game where if you win, your wish is granted, but if you lose, you lose your eternal soul. An excellent, high-stakes concept… or so I thought.

Let’s start with the characters. Honestly, they were all annoying in some way or another – especially the main character, Lucero. I will admit, I was very intrigued by Ze at first, but even he started to annoy me towards the end of the book.

My main problem with this book is the length. This book did not need to be over 700 pages long.

Second, as the title suggests, this is about something called The Wishing Game. In essence, it’s a game of life and death – but why is it that halfway through the book, we just… stop doing the games? They go on pause while a whole bunch of other random stuff happens. It felt like this book tried to do too much. At times, I felt like I was reading three separate books in one, and it just needed to pick one or two things to focus on. I think if the author had focused strictly on the games, this book would have been much better.

Since I had an audio ARC, let’s briefly talk about the narration. It was okay. I think the woman who played Lucero did a decent job, but after 20 hours of her voice, I was tired of it.

The side characters were interesting in the beginning, but later in the book, they frustrated me. It seemed like everything Lucero did, even her mistakes (which are understandable), was forgiven without consequence. This felt strange, considering [spoiler alert] they are all gods (or gods-to-be) in some fashion, and yet they basically just allowed this human to push them around. Maybe there’s more to her character that we don’t know – the writing definitely hints at it – but it doesn’t seem like they know that.

In the end, this book had such a promising premise, but the execution was completely off for me. I think if it wasn’t trying to do too much, and if it was about 350 pages shorter, it could have been a very interesting story. I continued listening because I was intrigued and wanted answers to my questions, and while some answers were given, it just created even more questions.

I will not be continuing with this series.

Thank you to Libro.fm for providing me with an audio ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

ALC 🎧 Book Review 🤍

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The way Veronica’s books always start is so subtle… Then it starts to pick up… And then yk you’re in for something wild lol!! The first few chapters had me reading the synopsis like, am I listening to the right book? 🤣 But once you’re in, you’re in!!

I’ve always had so much suspicion of Ze… Just SICK ☠️ I can’t lmfao. The way she portrayed him over and over again as a clueless, golden retriever. New to emotions, New to everything… I didn’t buy it one bit. I felt his possessiveness through the book- The way he claims her & made her go through that temple just to revive her tormentor? Oh, yeah. He’s siccck ☠️

But the way Luce is so clueless sometimes… Every time he calls her his “person”, she’s just like 😀 yk what, heck yeah lmfaoo. She’s def the person to befriend a serial killer & then go “I never saw it coming, I just thought he was just brought up weird.”
And Ze is just sopping all her injuries up w/ that mouth lmfaoo, screaminggg.
*By now, we all know what that mouth do!!

I can’t deny mans isn’t a whole ass mood though, like this scene alone? Relatable:

“I hate people.”
He mutters under his breath, but as his gaze meets mine, his eyes widen slightly. “Not you.” He quickly amends. “You are not people.”
“Really?” I asked amused. “What am I then?”
“Mine.” He answers simply, unflinchingly.

Yeah… I can feel his eye twitching from here 🤣 But I’m here for it lowkey 🚩

But overall, Veronica always hooks me. Even w/ weirdos like Ze lmfao. He was cute in a golden retriever way, but so unsettling… And when the ending hit I was like YUP 😰 I mean, what do you expect from someone who casually teleports into Hell… And a General at that. Screaming for book 2, I wish the covers were like the audiobook cover. I like the character art lol. Camille Cano did AMAZING as Luce & Will Thorne did good as well!!

5⭐️?? I don’t even know how to rate this. At first reading this I was disappointed, I kept comparing it to Fairydale which I *loved* and this one just felt…weird. It felt a little cringey and weirdly anachronistic and there was modern slang where there shouldn’t be and just every paragraph was stilted dialogue. And then I realized it was my absolute most hated trope (don’t freak out most people like it this is a me thing) I’m not going to say because I’ve decided not to include any spoilers in this review. But I DNF books at the first hint of this…..and yet….

And then I realized that I read all 742 pages, gasping, laughing, reading lines out loud to my husband, and giving him chapter by chapter summaries. I didn’t want to skim or skip chapters once, even though I kept telling my husband “this is a 3 star book” and he said “respectfully…you only give me chapter by chapter summaries and read out loud to me when it’s a 5 star book.” And then I had a little mini crisis, was this book that was full of almost every trope I hate…a 5 star read??? And I think it was 😂

I don’t know what to say, I had a great time 😂

I don’t even know where to begin with this review. I am shookith. I am unwell. I am also questioning all my life choices as it occurs to me that I read this book with the full knowledge that it would end on a cliffhanger and I have absolutely no idea how long I will have to wait on the answers for all of my many questions.

I knew going into the book that I would love it. I’m a huge fan of Veronica Lancet. Her ability to draw me into her stories is a magic all on its own. And I will say with complete conviction that The Wishing Game did just that for me. I was submerged in this universe she created and was so fully invested in Luce’s story. The more I read, the more invested I became, bouncing through every single emotion you can imagine over the course of thirteen hours. It was quite the reading journey!

The Wishing Game is meshing of paranormal and fantasy elements, filled with plot twists, intriguing characters, and heartbreaking moments. It’s a beautiful composition that left me aching for more. There were things I thought I had figured out only to be shocked at every turn. Then, as soon as I got comfortable with where the story was taking me, it threw me for another loop. Far too soon, I was at the 100% mark and left slack jawed wishing for the next book.

Luce and her husband are in a terrible accident. He dies, and his gold digging family has concocted a plot to cut Luce out of everything that her husband left her. She is left homeless and hunted by the family because they will not rest until they take her out and the threat she poses to them. In Luce's attempts to get away from the people the family has sent after her, she receives a mysterious invitation to the Wishing Game, and she accepts when she has nowhere else to go. If she wins, she will have any wish she wants granted. She teams up with the mysterious Thea, Cer, and Ze.

As the only human in the Wishing Game, Luce is at a huge disadvantage. She does what she can to aid her team, but she receives a lot of assistance, especially from Ze. He hates humans, yet as Luce and Ze spend more time together, he seems to soften to her. He has no understanding of social or societal norms, though. Ze is very cold to everyone, exce0t for Luce, who he tries to impress.

I love Luce and Ze's interactions. He is so naive and clueless about so much, yet he is still extremely deadly. He is definitely only soft for her, and I am absolutely obsessed. I can't wait for book two as I need to know everything after that cliffhanger!

That ENDING?

Holy smokes - this was my first Veronica Lancet book and did not know what I was getting into as I thought this was going to be a paranormal romance with how the story started but WOW was I wrong and in the best way.

An intricate story with world building that felt like I was watching a movie, so many more unanswered questions - I need book two immediately. We meet our main female character in the hospital after a coma only to find out that her husband has passed away in the same car accident. She is mysteriously invited to an event of some sort which she has no idea what it is about. She goes to this Wishing Game where creatures from different worlds compete in trials only to have their one true wish fulfilled and for her that would mean bringing back her husband.

This story has so many twists and turns with different gods and creatures from multiple worlds, phenomenal. I am at a loss for more words at that cliffhanger of an ending.
