“Dark angels, demons, and spiritual warfare are not mythology. I know this war intimately. I’ve witnessed it firsthand. I’ve had a front-row seat to the darkest spiritual occurrences you can imagine because I was raised by a former Satanist.”
What you’re about to read seems insane and impossible. But it’s not. It’s true. That’s right—the demonic world presented by Hollywood in movies like The Exorcist is based on true, here-and-now events.
There is another reality—a world beyond our five senses—a world containing the darkest of elements and the most brilliant of lights. Are our lives a battleground in an epic war? And in this other dimension, can we find redemption?
Rick Hansen recently moved to Austin, Texas from Southern California with his wife and three daughters. He is an avid surfer, extreme athlete, author, TEDx speaker, and tested senior executive. What distinguishes him however is that growing up he saw unimaginable things most people only see in movies—angels, demons, strangely possessed individuals, demonic manifestations, haunts, and spiritual warfare. In his own words, “I’ve had a front-row seat to the darkest spiritual occurrences you can imagine. It is not a myth, a farce, some kooky fringe conspiracy theory or hallucination. In some sense, it’s all I really know. That’s because I was raised by a former Satanist.”
Rick Hansen is President and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, which has generated more than $200 million for spinal cord injury-related programs and initiatives. He lives with his family in Richmond, BC.
I give this book 4.5 stars. In some ways, this book reads like a good fiction novel because I couldn't put it down. Hansen's storytelling is compelling. The story is completely riveting. And Hansen does a good job of grounding his Father's story in a biblical and Christian perspective. Hansen helps his readers avoid two extremes: 1) Satan and the demonic realm aren't real, and 2) Satan and his demons are found under every rock. Spiritual evil is very real, according to the Bible and in human experience, turning up in the lives of ordinary people, from a heated argument to the occult. The best part of this book is Hansen's message: evil does not have the last word. The cross and the resurrection of Jesus have defeated every evil power. Spiritual evil is real and even unbearable, but there is hope and freedom for anyone through the gospel of Christ.
The reason for my 4.5-star rating is that I wish Hansen had put his last two chapters at the front of the book. Those two chapters can set the stage for the entire volume.
Lastly, this read is not for the faint of heart because the content is scary, true-to-life, and even unbelievable to the modern mind. Mentally, emotionally, and spiritually prepare yourself, and even pray after you read each chapter to process the contents well. I recommend this book to pastors, missionaries, church planters, and anyone in the trenches of ministry. But I also recommend this book to anyone who needs guidance in how to help their loved ones find freedom in Christ.
