Rate this book
If you love something, you never set it free. You fight for it. And I'll fight for you.

THE MUSE
The nude sketch was left on my pillow. A sketch of...me. I knew I had a stalker—someone watching my every move from the shadows. I never expected him...

The world knows him as Acheron—a world-renowned, billionaire stage artist who always wears a mask. He’s claimed me as his muse. And he’s created a dark exhibit just for me. Trapped in his underground gallery, I’m not just a historian. I’m his possession. His work of art. And I may never break free.

THE MASTER
She is not simply my muse. She is my masterpiece. Everleigh is mine—my inspiration, my obsession. She is the culmination of every brushstroke, every line, every dream.

She may fight me, but she’ll learn the truth soon there is no life, no freedom, no escape without me. She is the creation I was born to make.

A dark, dual-POV romance that will leave you questioning your life choices...and possibly require therapy. Perfect for fans of Lights Out, Haunting Adeline, and In Love With the Devil...HEA included.

This list gives you a little peek into the crazy brain of this author. If you find yourself relating to any of these, reach out to me on any of my pages and we shall go forth and bond!

1. I am an extrovert with unlimited psychological energy. (I also stockpile Pinterest memes!)
2. HUGE Enneagram fan, so if you want to connect more, prepare to be asked to take the test so I can better understand you and speak your love language . (My tritype is 847 - which makes me Deadpool's female twin!)
3. My favorite authors on the YA side are Laini Taylor and Susan Dennard. My favorite authors on the adult side include: Amelia Hutchins *Queen*, Pam Godwin *Goddess*, and Elayna Gallea.
4. Up until 2020, I used to write strictly YA. I had a major identity transformation, wrote three books in three months (back to back), found my true VOICE, processed my identity, healed from past trauma, and came out as bisexual. Now, I love writing spicy fantasy romance and bridging the gap between the heterosexual and queer audience by offering them badass heroines taking on the dark alphas and literally *everyone* in my books is queer and polyamorous because #whychoose? It's normalized, it's respected, and it's beautiful!
5. My favorite film is The Princess Bride.
6. I am Disney-obsessed, especially Marvel and the Princess movement.
7. I started writing The Aviary over twelve years ago after a visit to Germany and learning about the Red-Light District. These books were evidence of my sexuality screaming to be let out.
8. My favorite Broadway is The Phantom of the Opera followed closely by The Scarlet Pimpernel.
9. Songs to describe me: Unbreakable by Fireflight, Warrior by Demi Lovato, Ready or Not by Brit Nicole and Lecrae, Speechless by Naomi Scott (Aladdin), Show Yourself by Idina Mendel (Frozen 2), This Is Me from The Greatest Showman, and The Sound of Silence.
10. I’m a mom to two little girls. I fight for a better world for them and for myself.

I received this book as an ARC read.

Okay so. I am a huge horror/shock factor/dark romance lover. However, this was just trying to hard. The writing wasn't there. I fought like hell to get through it. I was cringing so badly through most of it. I kept getting through a page and setting it aside to do other things. I feel like the author might not have experience in the bdsm community. I've been a member of the community for 15 years and I feel that if you don't have first hand experience about what you are writing, it will show on the page. The author herself is nice so this is in no way a dig but I wanted to give an honest review of my feelings about the book. The MMC is weird but not even in a way that's enjoyable to read. Some things are just too far fetched, similar to a low budget 80s movie. I kept seeing "you'll need therapy after this book" on social media and I feel like that kind of hype hurt the book because it didn't deliver.

Got this as an arc read. I’ve read a lot of DARK books, this just wasn’t it for me. It seems like she’s trying to cram so much in to this book & just missed the mark. There’s things that are described in great detail & others that are completely lacking. Just about every trope is mentioned in this book & even BookTok is mentioned. Kind of cringy honestly. Is this book dark? Absolutely! PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS AS A GUIDE FOR BDSM!!!! This is NOT bdsm!!! This is drugging, kidnapping, & rape. If that’s your thing, cool, just not for everyone.

I received this book as an ARC and honestly regret signing up for it and heavily regret reading it. I'll never pick up another book by this author ever again.

Literally everything in this book was cringey AF. The writing, the story, the characters, the Booktok and Bookish Community references. This book is for Wattpad or A03, not for publishing.

I love Dark Romance and was excited to read this based on all the hype and trigger warnings the author was giving in all the reader groups on FB, but it ended up being a pure cringe fest. And she was practically begging people to give her 5 stars in her personal reader group and begging to see people's "positive reviews." Well, sorry, not sorry, I am giving an honest review.

I debated on giving a better review based on the fact the author seemed like a nice person, but then I saw her trashing my favorite indie authors in a comment section of another reader group and thought... Indie author trashing other indie author's writing and story telling when YOUR writing is garbage? Yeah, no. Uncool.

I unfollowed the author, left her group, but still left my review as promised.

This story will make you realize that sometimes, the most dangerous characters are the most compelling. You'll excuse the villain's flaws as battle scars, and forget they are still wounds. You'll believe that you can FIX him, even when he has no desire to be fixed.

TROPES:
-Stalking
-Possessive/obsessive masked man
-Touch her and die (or Look at her and die)
-His stalking made her feel violated, and she hated him for it.
-Cat and mouse
-FMC (historian) x MMC (wealthy masked stalker)

Safety:
-No sharing/cheating
-HEA. Yes.

As someone who was experiencing a reading slump and struggling to finish books over 300 pages, "The Art of Obsession: A Dark Stalker Artist Novel" by Emily Shore brought back my love of reading. I finished it in two straight days! It hooked me from the very beginning. To think this is her first contemporary romance, it's truly exceptional!

I experienced a whirlwind of emotions while reading this novel. This book helped me escape reality, and now I can't stop thinking about it. Incredibly entertaining and impossible to put down.

WHAT I LIKED:

1. I loved how Emily Shore portrayed the MMC (Acheron) as an artist with a deep appreciation for art. It was like I was reading dark, beautiful poems, especially the part when Acheron talked about Everleigh in relation to art. Every word he said was so interesting.

2. This countdown game seriously got my heart pounding! They have this whole thing where Acheron gives Everleigh 10 minutes to hide, then he goes hunting for her. Lol, it was SO tense! There's another one. The scene where Acheron compelled Everleigh to write "I will not destroy Master's Art" incredibly intense. I almost held my breath while reading it.

3. Everleigh (as a historian), was wonderfully portrayed. It was funny how she'd get distracted by the antique objects in Acheron's possession, even in stressful moments. This amused Acheron. She could have thrown anything at Acheron to defend herself, but she'd stop the second she realized it was an antique. I weirdly loved that part.

4. It was surprisingly sweet that the stalker knew how to braid her hair.

5. It had a psychological thriller vibe because of the mind games. The story keeps you guessing about who the true villains are. Yes, bad villains do exist here!

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:

1. Sedation without consent.
2. Cherry's character. I'm sorry but her conversations with Everleigh weren't helpful and kinda distracting. I almost skipped her parts. 💔
3. Exhibitionism. Just nope!

FRIENDLY REMINDERS:

1. This is definitely not a typical dark romance. It has strong "Haunting Adeline" vibes and may not be suitable for all readers. Your mental health is important.
2. I know how cozy it is to read with coffee. But trust me, you might want to put it down. Every scene in this book will make your heart palpitate.
3. This story might make some people uncomfortable. The MMC is seriously obsessed with the FMC, which can feel a bit creepy. Some readers might DNF. However in my opinion, If you like messy/problematic relationships or complex characters, finish this book. It's worth it.

NOTE: This is my personal opinion about the book. My goal is to share my experience, not to change anyone's perspective.

What the actual fuck..

I absolutely love dark romance.. this was not it. The MMC is just delulu. He’s banging the FMC in front a group of men (who bought tickets, btw. He sold the first time the FMC has sex to a bunch of men to watch and jerk off to) and says stupid shit like “they’re witnessing art, they’re witnessing our bond” brother, you have her tied to a bed it’s not exactly a “bond”. She had no idea these men were even watching her till you switched the one way glass.. be so for real rn. This guy has a god complex in the worst possible way.

There are spelling/ grammatical errors on top of honestly just a horrible writing style.

“YoU’ll nEeD TheRapY aFteR ThIs BoOk”- how about a strait up lobotomy, instead.

This book was dark and unique. And written very well!

I found Acheron to be a bit creepy but I think that was the author's point. He's the creepy stalker. And he's obsessed with Everleigh aka Evie.

The spice between these two is spicy. I appreciate that, haha!

For all of the dark romance readers who love spice, submission, dominance, and the finding of one's self to be there for the person they love, this is it!!

Wooooow! This was the first book of Emily’s I’ve read, and I will definitely be reading more of her work. This is a mildly dark but thoroughly twisted story, with the perfect blend of spice and plot to keep you invested and wanting more. It wasn’t as dark as I expected. Yes, the book explores some extreme kinks, but it’s not widely dark (not compared to some books). That said, the relationship is toxic, and I think that’s what gives the story its darker edge. And I can’t forget Cherry, Everleigh’s inner sidekick. She adds a brilliant dose of humour.

The story starts off a little slow burn, but the few encounters before the main event are already hot. When the main event happens (the exhibit), WOW! The spice hits full force, leading to a non-stop string of steamy scenes. But it’s all very questionable. There is never explicit consent. Everleigh even sits preparing for him to take her by force, and when he does, it’s brutal, carving up her chest in front of an audience of men. And though she is turned on every time (which is unbelievable), in reality, her body wouldn’t withstand it, or possibly enjoy it.

Archeron isn’t a character you’d want to fall for, but it’s hard not to because of the way he cares about Everleigh. He’s obsessed and protective, and the way he uses his control to get her to share her secrets and past traumas, helping her heal, is strangely admirable. However, the scene involving hooks through her skin (supposedly reinforced by him) completely lost me. I should have been done when he carved her chest, but no, the hooks did it for me.

Overall, this was an incredibly fun and darkish read. But I need to stress, this IS NOT BDSM. Yes, it includes BDSM elements, but there’s never any consent or discussion. She never has the chance to say ‘No’. Control is taken from her the moment he took her, no ifs and or buts.

The book contains intense themes and tropes, with many trigger warnings, so check those carefully before diving in.

this book was very much cringey. it seemed that the author was trying to fit all the popular dark romance tropes in one book and it backfired. i struggled to read this but then at one point i dnfed it.

also that the reference to booktok girlie, dark romance girlie was so overdone, we get it that you love that but you don't have to mention it every other sentence. the hero was such a wannabe stalker i swear he was the biggest creep with no class. asshole. the way he treated the heroine was just a big no, and the scene in the start where he doesn't let go to washroom was so pathetic.

i love dark romance but this was just very pathetic and idiotic.

I’m obsessed with pretty much everything this author writes. But this book? I don’t think it’s for me.

Tbh… I like a lot of weird stuff but this super rich MMC… he’s just weird. Like beyond weird. He sees this girl walking across a cemetery, touching the tombstones and he thinks “wow. She’s going to be my muse” and starts to stalk, then kidnap her!? Because of the amount of dark romance I read, initially I was like “awe that’s true love right there. He fell in love at first sight”. But then with the weird stalking, drugging, and pee-coming scene in the beginning? Yeah no. He’s just freaking weird. The FMC? The Stockholm Syndrome? CHERRY BOMB?! Love our girl Cherry. She was the star of the show.

Gonna start by saying read the triggers.

It’s fast paced from the start, with no let up which for me I loved. Acheron is a ‘God of Art’ he does come across as egotistical, arrogant and controlling. I guess he is and much more, however he is obsessed with Evie is this a good or bad thing? 😬 He kidnaps her and encases her in his exhibit in an ingenious way to ensure she doesn’t try to escape her gilded cage.

We’re led through his treatment of her, him showcasing her and his dominance over her. She fights but ultimately submits to him, is it an extreme case of Stockholm Syndrome?

For me this storyline drew me in straight away, reading until I had finished. It was artistically done (pun intended), the spice was constant, the BDSM element incorporated into his exhibit was at times WTF and her acceptance of it, for a reader it may be hard to read and makes you think if this weren’t fiction how would you react? A story that makes you question your own feelings and morals will always stand out 😈🖤 I can’t give you anymore otherwise you won’t read it yourself 🤣

I received this book as an arc and I have never read anything from this author before. I read a lot of DARK as it is my favorite genre however I feel like the author was doing too much with this one.

‼️READ ALL TRIGGER WARNINGS‼️

The MMC was just no. The things he said along with the way he treats the FMC is not at all what you would think. I also didn’t feel like the FMC liked him AT ALL! As a person with psychiatric education and a love for the dark side of things, this felt almost like a criminal minds episode. The first half made me think he was genuinely going to traffic her. She spent an entire chapter preparing herself to be raped by the man who had kidnapped her and kept her in a glass box while other men paid to watch him torture her.

The authors writing style was also not for me. Some things were extremely descriptive and some lacked everything. it took me several chapters to figure out what color hair the FMC had. Every single trope was mentioned (by word) in a weird manner and BookTok was mentioned too many times. I feel like people who usually read Wattpad would like this however it’s just not for me.

‼️And PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS BOOK AS A GUIDE TO BDSM!!! THIS IS NOT BDSM!!‼️

I may read more by this author at a later date but this just wasn’t for me.

This book sucked me in from page one!! Acheron is deliciously obsessive, and a lot deranged, and im here for it! Cherry Bomb gave me life! Her sassy little quips brought me joy. Not a big fan of pregnancy tropes, and about 85%ish in she gets pregnant but, i love how it was incorporated and not the sole thing focused on. Emily has done an amazing job building the backstory as to why they are both so broken.

Acheron/Cal is obsessed with Everleigh, to a fault. He stalks her, leaves drawings of her naked form on her pillow, traps her in a gilded cage, puts her on display, kills for her. What more could a girl want?! (Honestly....therapy, but this sounds like more fun!!). He opens himself slowly up to her, letting her know his deep dark secrets, for a price. The blood fetish being a big factor in that. He is deliciously deranged, but also accepting, and non judgmental to her dissociative little counterpart, even wanting to know them both.....can we say *swoon!*

Everleigh (and Cherry!!), are stalked, imprisoned, and worshiped by Acheron, the God of Art. She holds so many secrets and traumas, that he forces her to work through, in the best way he can.....sex and punishment. Cherry.....shes ready for marriage!! Worships him at an altar, and convinces Everleigh hes the best thing to happen to her.

There are a lot of tropes and triggers in this book. The main ones i will highlight: masked stalker, captivity, pregnancy (towards end and in bonus chapter), blood play.....soo much blood, knife play, bondage, trauma (they are broken little babies who put each other back together), kidnapping......there is also a lot of mental health rep in this book, because your mental health matters!

I can honestly say i enjoyed this book, from page 1 to the very last page. Ms Shore, you are a goddess! Keep up the good work!!

Ok, so... I didn't hate this book, but I didn't love it either - 3.5 stars. I expected more from the stalking aspect of it since it's labeled as such. But... really... all this book amounted to was a wealthy artist, who saw the FMC in a cemetery and decided 💥right then and there💥 she was his missing muse. He stalks her very briefly, kidnaps her, and places her inside of an underground *exhibit* [basically a guided cage she doesn't want to be in], where he personally invites his influential clientele to watch him violate her.

The book includes but is not limited to: 🔪 play, 🩸play, period 🩸 play, ⛓️ & rope play, 🕯play, impact play, edging, forced orgasms, trauma "healing", explicit gore, dub-con (could be non-con), gagging, suspension, puppeteering/marionette, torture, body piercings, and mind games.

TROPES:
⭐️ Light stalking
⭐️ Touch/look at her and ☠️
⭐️ Cat and mouse (although these parts were very short😭)
⭐️ FMC (historian) x MMC (wealthy, well-established artist)
⭐️ (FMC) enemies-to-lovers
⭐️ MMC instalove (more like insta obsession)
⭐️ Gothic-y type setting
⭐️ MMC is a serial ☠️
⭐️ BDSM play
⭐️ MMC is an OTT, jealous, & possessive masked man
⭐️ FMC is a virgin (MMC doesn't know until he takes it)
⭐️ Pregnancy (but not a real "surprise")

WHAT I LIKED:
✅️ The stalking aspect
✅️ The counting 🐈/🐁 game at the beginning 😉
✅️ The removal of her birth control (she didn't consent to), subsequent comments involving breeding/ovulation
✅️ Kidnapping
✅️ Stabby FMC fights controlling MMC (until the end)
✅️ MMC buying FMC expensive, rare antique collectibles
✅️ Dual POV (Acheron's POV is everything)
✅️ The smut was 🤌
✅️ No sharing

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
❌️ Repeated drugging without consent (sedation)
❌️ Cherry's character - her conversations with Everleigh weren't helpful and mostly distracting. I almost skipped her parts altogether, but some of her comments were funny, so I didn't
❌️ Heavy of exhibitionism.... just nope! Nope! 😱
❌️ Acheron's background - mention of cult-like activity, including bl00dletting & rituals
❌️ Typos, sentence structuring, and formatting errors (not frequent enough to force me to dnf, but enough to be a nuisance)

This story is going to make some people uncomfortable. I would classify it as Dark Romance, but specifically "Pitch Black", similar to Sky Blu's "In Love with the Devil". But... instead of a doctor, the MMC in this book is a billionaire artist with a tainted point of view; there are no mentions of the MMC starving the FMC in this book, though. The MMC is seriously obsessed with the FMC, which can feel a bit creepy at times, but... I think that's by design. There were a few times where I was like, "Did I seriously just read what I think I read?!" [THE ANSWER IS YES... YES, I DID😳] So... I had to step away and come back to the book. Some readers might DNF. The author warns readers at the beginning of the book - it's going to be a crazy, wild ride. However, in my opinion, if you like toxic/problematic relationships or unpredictable characters, finish this book.

I’ve been reading Emily Shore’s books pretty consistently during the past year or so. I love the Her Monstrous Boys series. I loved Captured by the Cupid. And Kidnapped by the Krampus. But there’s just something about The Art of Obsession that GRABS you and won’t let go.

First, should you read the trigger warnings? YES. Do yourself a favor and make sure your constitution can handle blood play, stalking, SA (flashback), rope play, breath play, and a bunch of other stuff. Like, for real. Having said that, was this the darkest dark romance I’ve ever read? No. If you’re a regular reader of dark romance like me, you probably won’t even bat an eye at the content.

The plot line of the story is great. Unique. Intriguing. A teensy bit creepy. But so good! The two main characters, Acheron and Everleigh, dance around each other and the tension has you constantly wondering what he’s going to do next.

Everything about this was enjoyable. The only thing that gave me a bit of a pause was how the main characters speak to each other — the style isn’t purple prose, but it’s definitely a bit … ornate? dramatic? awkward in parts? For me it’s definitely a case of the speech not feeling completely natural when I imagined the characters conversing while I was reading. On paper the style of speaking is just okay. Weird how my issue is with the cadence of speech and not a character being pleasured with the handle of a knife, right? Yeah, well, no one’s perfect.

If you like dark romance , aren’t scared of a laundry list of trigger warnings, and want a story with a unique premise then you should definitely give this a look!

I went into this book blindly, and boy was it a wild ride!
My advice is to go in open minded and check your triggers because she is a dark one!
Everleigh and Acheron's story was one that I will warn you about this is DARK and filled with kinks. Without ruining the crazy rollercoaster of a ride this book is, I was yelling at everyone in this book there was so many parts in this book that all I wanted to do was grab Everleigh and tell her she needs to grow a set because the way he was speaking to her and his actions... he would have had a problem as soon as he fell asleep lol..... but at the same time, I will say I liked when Acheron decided to help her get closure from an incident that caused trauma she suffered when she was in college (acupuncture, roses, and murder oh my lol).
Everleigh has an alter ego she calls Cherry and let me tell you she is every dark romance girly's lil devil.
The Art of Obsession has an awesome playlist, and it's noted at the beginning of each chapter!
My advice is to go in open minded and check your triggers because she is a dark one!
I will end with a quote
" I'm just the sexier survival side of your brain coping with the immediate trauma response of being trapped with a deranged artist redirecting fight or flight into fight and flirt" - Cherry

Wow. I’m at a loss to know where to start with this review. It’s dark first and foremost. If you read trigger warnings as a menu, check the fine print.
This is not grey, this is black.
This is far from my first book by Emily, so I knew what I was getting into. She weaves her characters beautifully, pulling you in, making you catch your breath, waiting for the fallout.
Acheron is considered the God of Art, gifted and troubled in equal measure. Everleigh a gifted historian, unwillingly thrust into his world.
I was pulled in from the first page. As we learnt more about Acheron and Everleigh, the traumas they had been through that turned them into the adults they became, I got more and more involved with them individually.
Cherry was an awesome sub-character and a great deflector when things got rough. Her humour and sass was very entertaining.
I loved it, it made me feel deeply and that’s what I want from a book. Not all the feelings were comfortable, but it felt like growth and survival by the end.
Please, check your trigger warnings. There are some really dark aspects. Your mental health matters.

I received The Art of Obsession by Emily Shore as an ARC read, and it’s a dark, twisted stalker romance with elements of horror. The MMC is a morally black, masked artist, while the FMC is a historian who catches his eye in a cemetery—sparking an all-consuming obsession. Unable to resist his fixation, he begins stalking her before ultimately kidnapping her to become his muse.
I’m conflicted about this one. I genuinely enjoyed the story, but I’ve discovered a new book ick: explicitly listing the tropes within the narrative. Do I love the tropes themselves? Absolutely. Do I enjoy seeing them spelled out in the text? Apparently not.

Words cannot express how much I loved this book! But I will try XD The chemistry between Evie and Acheron is so toxic but so beautiful! The story is a perfect blend of spice and plot and thrill to keep you invested and wanting more! This was the first book of Emily's I ever read and will without a doubt read the rest. This was also the first book I ever received as an ARC reader and it was extremely memorable! The quotes, the themes, the characters were better than I could have ever imagined. 100/10, will always recommend this to my dark romance girlies!

Oh my... I devoured this book in 2 days.
Was some of this unbelievable but believable at the same time, YES, but the spicy was amazing. Obsession is definitely more intense than love, but who am I to say what love is to another person 🫣
This book was very well written, and I could tell how much research had gone into writing the development of these characters, which in turn allowed the spicy scenes to be understood. I think I just confused myself writing this but I hope people understand what I'm trying to say!

Dark And twisted

This is my first book from this author and I’ll just say it was perfect. Acheron and Everleigh were perfect for each other, they were both dark and twisted. Sometimes I felt like Acheron went too far with Everleigh but when we got her point of view I could understand why he did it. He was her savior.
He was not only her st9lker, he was obsessive, posessive and a really jealous man who did not share. There were times where I thought he was only obsessed with her but then the author showed us how much he loved her.
But in the beginning it is said Everleigh had a Fiancé but we never got a backstory, we all just know he died in a car accident when he was on his way to the wedding

The Art of Obsession by Emily Shore

⭐ 4/5 Stars | 🌶️ 5/5 Spice

Emily Shore clearly looked at the dark romance genre and said, let’s make this extra dark, extra spicy, and let’s traumatize some people along the way. And honestly? I respect it.

The Premise:
Everleigh Lennox, a historian with a taste for the past, suddenly finds herself the very unwilling muse of an unhinged, masked artist named Acheron—because apparently, normal dating apps weren’t dramatic enough for him. Instead of sliding into her DMs, he slides into her life via nude sketches, cryptic messages, and some deeply concerning home invasions. Everleigh, smart and stabby, is not here for it—except when she maybe, sort of, is (cue internal existential crisis).

The Good:
• Acheron: Our resident morally pitch black MMC is a full-course meal of psychotic devotion wrapped in a three-piece suit and a cape (because of course). He’s manipulative, obsessive, and a complete menace to society—but damn if he isn’t compelling. He’s got big Phantom of the Opera meets Hannibal vibes, but instead of just painting pretty pictures, he’s out here staging elaborate kidnappings like an artistic Jigsaw.
• Everleigh: Finally, an FMC with some self-preservation instincts (albeit conflicting ones because… well, trauma). She’s smart, she’s not here to play the “damsel,” and she’s just as much a mystery as Acheron is.
• The spice: Ho-ly hell. This book doesn’t just push boundaries; it drags them into a soundproof room and has its way with them. Expect dubcon, noncon, puppet play (what in the hell, ma’am), marking, and enough aftercare to keep things teetering on the barely acceptable side of problematic.
• The writing: Sharp, lyrical, and full of deliciously extra theatrics. Every sentence feels designed to make you either gasp, sweat, or consider calling a therapist.

The Bad (or, “Sir, Why are you like this?”)
• Acheron is an absolute psychopath. There’s no redemption arc here, no soft-boy transition. He starts out a twisted stalker and remains a twisted stalker. If you’re hoping for some heartfelt groveling or a moment of “oh, maybe he’s just misunderstood”—honey, no. He is exactly as deranged as advertised.
• Consent? We don’t know her. Listen, I get it. It’s dark romance, and I signed up for the trauma, but this book lives in the land of dubious and straight-up non-consent. It’s a heavy read, so be ready.
• Triggers on triggers: Dubcon, noncon, stalking, captivity, manipulation, psychological warfare, puppet play (yeah, we need to discuss this), marking, BDSM elements, and a whole lot of “this is definitely not legal, sir.” If that’s your jam, welcome to the depravity. If not, run.

Final Verdict:
This book is batshit insane, deliciously unhinged, and absolutely not for the weak. If you’re here for soft love stories, you took a wrong turn at “happily ever after” and ended up in the Saw franchise with lace and candlelight. But if you like your romance dark, obsessive, and so spicy it burns, The Art of Obsession delivers in a way that will leave you questioning both your morals and your search history.

You’ve been warned.

(Also, someone check on the author. She might be on a watchlist.)

The Art of Obsession - Savage Stalker series book 1
Emily Shore

Genre: Dark Romance
Tropes: Masked Stalker, Morally BLACK, Touch her and die, Trauma, Dual-Pov, forced proximity
Spice /5:🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Plot: 3.5/5
---------------------------------------------
Book Summary:
Masked artist Acheron decides that Historian Everleigh Lennox is his muse, and he must have her. Not just to own her, but to be his inspiration, his masterpiece, his obsession.
---------------------------------------------
Thoughts:
I actually liked this book very much. I devoured it in days (only because I had an event to attend, it would have been faster otherwise).
If you are not used to dark romance, this may not be one to start with.
This book is dark. It's not morally grey at all; it's pitch black. There is no redeeming Acheron, and he doesn't want to be redeemed. He knows who he is and doesn't apologise for it. As an avid dark romance reader, I didn't bat an eye at the triggers and dove right in. I'm glad I did.

It gave me Phantom vibes at the start, and I thoroughly enjoyed the theatrical side of the persona: Acheron. I found him quite unique, and could practically feel him circling like a predator to prey in my mind.

It was very fast-paced. Sometimes it could be beneficial for a story to just slow down a little and let the scenes breathe, especially when it came to the exhibit scenes, and the time in between, for I felt that it was very much exhibit show, fancy bathroom, spicy scenes, and repeat after some time jumps.
Still, I liked the dynamic between the characters. Although it was very non-consensual, for a dark romance, I believe it worked.

The art side of the book was beautiful, both in scenes and in dialogue. The trauma on both sides was a great addition; it gave them more depth/personality. I liked the representation of 'Cherry', the figment of Everleigh's imagination; Cherry grew in trauma and became a coping mechanism. It was very representative and comforting for me, who has often had to talk myself through scary situations, whether it be anxiety or something more. Though she didn't exist as a real person, Cherry was a fireball of energy, silliness, and confidence. It was refreshing for a character like Acheron to lean into this coping mechanism rather than try to 'fix' Everleigh of it. Leading from the trauma, despite Acheron's controlling ways, he did try to teach and show Everleigh that she had absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, not her body, not her mind, not her love for history, and not her desires for him or anything else. I was surprised by that side of him.

Unfortunately, I found it very easy to piece together who was getting into the building, so it was no mystery at all to me. It would have been nice for that to be vague, or even a complete twist somehow.

As I was reading, I thought this might have been my first five-star of the year, due to how much I enjoyed it. Having stepped back a little, I found too many things needing to be reworked or checked (which I have messaged the author about for hopeful editing, I won't mention them here). There was also the constant mention of booktok/book community/Kindle; it felt a little forced; I could have done without it, especially when it was mentioned that Everleigh had little online media presence. (I'm noting a pattern, as 'selling only for Indie authors' also came up in the recent Headless Horseman book I read by this Author. Of course, very important, but not constantly needed in books! It takes away from the story and scenes.)
I would have loved for the stalking to have lasted longer, since it is what the book is promoted as. There was too little of it, and it could have made for some really thrilling, intense, on-edge scenes. (Another reason to slow down the pacing).

Truly, though, I fell in love with the characters, especially Cherry and Acheron. Yes, some actions were very over the top, but I can't lie that is what I expect and want from these dark romances, and I ADORE it. It was gripping; I found it hard to put the book down.
Sometimes I worry for my soul with books like this, but I can't get enough of them. On to the next!

Quotes:
1.
“He’s a character ripped from one of my darkest fantasies, the kind I shouldn’t admit to having. Tall, dark, and draped in blood-red power, he’s a Gothic erotic villain who’s stepped off the page to ruin my life. Or maybe save it.”

2.
“Because I am not her hero. I am not even her villain. I am the artist of her every dream and nightmare. I am her creator.”

3.
““I’ll fight. I’ll scream!” she spits out.---...“You’ll beg and crawl, too—when the time comes.”

4.
“Oh, honey, hums Cherry, we need to get you a mug that says ‘It’s not a red flag. It’s a love language’.”

5.
He’s become the weight I carry, the shadow I can’t shake. Heavy is the head that holds the crown, but heavier is the throne that holds the king. And..., ...Acheron, the God of Art, is every inch a king.”

6.
“I will take you to hell and back if that’s what it takes to free you from this darkness. But you have to let me in. You have to let me be your salvation.” I have burrowed beneath her skin. I am in her blood as she is in mine.”

The Art of Obsession is a dark, twisted, and utterly consuming read that pushes boundaries in the best way possible. This book is not for the faint of heart—Emily Shore holds nothing back, delivering an intense stalker romance brimming with obsession, trauma, and a possible Stockholm syndrome kink that fuels the dynamic between the characters. If you’re someone who checks trigger warnings before diving into a book, you’ll definitely want to do that here—because this story has a lot of them. But if you love a dark, morally black romance with unflinching storytelling, this is a wild ride worth taking.

The story follows Everleigh, a quiet historian, and Acheron, an enigmatic and incredibly wealthy artist with a flair for the dramatic. Acheron’s obsession with Everleigh is the driving force behind the story, and as he pushes her to her limits, she discovers hidden depths within herself. Their relationship is intense, raw, and laced with an almost poetic kind of darkness. Acheron is the definition of a questionable, dangerous, and possessive MMC—he’s broken, twisted, and yet written in a way that makes him strangely sympathetic. The “touch her and die” energy is off the charts—literally.

One of the most fascinating elements of the book is Everleigh’s alter ego, Cherry Bomb. She serves as Everleigh’s coping mechanism and adds a witty, sharp-edged humor that balances the intensity of the story. Cherry’s one-liners had me laughing amidst all the chaos, making her one of the most memorable aspects of the book.

Despite its heavy themes, The Art of Obsession isn’t just about shock value—it has a solid plot, rich character development, and hauntingly beautiful imagery, especially surrounding the role of art in the story. Everleigh becoming Acheron’s art is such a unique and chilling concept, executed in a way that feels both disturbing and empowering. The book is filled with darkly poetic moments, making even the most uncomfortable elements feel meaningful. Even the parts that aren’t necessarily my cup of tea—like the inclusion of period blood—were written in a way that made sense for the story and somehow felt…beautiful.

And let’s talk about the spice—because wow. This book does not hold back. The sex scenes are frequent, intense, and push limits in ways that might be too much for some readers but were absolutely fantastic for those who enjoy dark, boundary-stretching romance. Pair that with action, thriller elements, and the dialogue, and you have a book that is impossible to put down.

If you love dark romance with obsessive MMCs, hauntingly beautiful writing, and spice that goes beyond the usual, The Art of Obsession is an experience you won’t forget. This was my first book by Emily Shore, and I had no idea what to expect—but I devoured it. It’s unique, twisted, and absolutely unforgettable.

Firstly let me start with, CHECK YOUR TRIGGER WARNINGS. This is pitch black romance, some of the stuff in this is extreme and it’s so important to know your own limits *your mental health matters*.
As for the writing, Emily is truly a master of detail; the way she sets scenes and her dialog is captivating, I feel like I’m there, a perverted outsider watching every move the characters make through a two way mirror (see what I did there?). I ate this book up like a prime rib and left no crumbs.
The way Acheron views our FMC Everleigh is the way all women deserved to be viewed (minus maybe the obsession and kidnapping? But I’m not here to yuck anyone’s yum). Acheron is a man obsessed and will stop at nothing, and I mean NOTHING for Everleigh.
This book packs a punch with the spice, in all the best ways. It’s constant and heavy and intense, just the way I like it, but not disjointed or excessive which is a really fine balance to achieve as an author and I think Emily did it perfectly.
I’m beyond obsessed with the lay out and the way there is a playlist for every chapter - I set my phone to those songs and let it really set the vibe which was fun and unique as a reading experience. Music and literature really can work in such great harmony together and the author really captured that.
The highlight was of course our bonus FMC Cherry-Bomb, she’s witty, spicy and sassy with a side of leather and rage. As a maladaptive daydreamer, I feel pretty ripped off that I don’t have a cool coping mechanism bestie like Cherry. She added the perfect unique flair to this.
I cringed my way through the ending bonus scene, not because I didn’t love it, because I did - as with all the spice this book brings to the table, but mostly just because I’m lactose intolerant. It’s definitely one to prepare yourself for.

As with every book, naturally there were a few things that I wasn’t a huge fan of personally, and I say personally because this is just ME and my opinion. Namely (no pun intended) the constant use of the FMCs full government name. It sometimes really took me out of the scene and made me cringe a few times - but that’s just me. I can see why the author did it and the emphasis it adds to Acherons obsession. There were also a few scenes that felt a little rushed or lacking detail - I would’ve loved to know more about our characters, while there was some physical description, I had a hard time visualizing them. I also was left hungry for more backstory - Acherons upbringing? That could be a whole prequel with how many questions I had.

Overall this was a great read and I definitely recommend it to the experienced spice consumer! With an interesting plot, detailed spicy scenes, good drama and a HEA; it kept me enthralled and wanting to keep reading.

One day on my vacation I was tipsy scrolling while on Facebook, when I seen an author post "hey would you like to read a book with *insert multiple trigger warnings*?" I commented that I absolutely would love to! Next thing I know I was filling out an ARC reader form and book funnel. Not long after I got an email and a copy of The Art Of Obsession. This was my first ever ARC read as well as reading anything by Emily. I was soo excited to take part in something like this!

The book is about a historian, and a world renowned artist. While he takes her past trauma and turns it into art while she uncovers the history of the mysterious masked man who's obsessed with her. As well as her spunky imaginary side kick Cherry Bomb offering her colorful input along their journey. Early on in the book Cherry describes Acheron as "50 shades of trigger warnings!" As Everleigh tries to wrap her head around what's happening to her with her masked stalker. She's in fight or flight mode, but with the help of Cherry Bomb it isn't long before it turns into fight or flirt. There's definitely a mix of both happening throughout the story. Everleigh is a tough nut to crack and puts up a fight almost the entire time. Acheron is relentless in her pursuit to make her the most exquisite exhibit he's ever created. It's dark but at the same time so beautiful. He traps her in an exhibit surrounded by beautiful artifacts he knows she won't destroy, the only thing she'll destroy is herself. The more you read, the more she surrenders to her darkness and it shatters her, but Acheron does it in such a beautiful way when she's put back together she's whole and more beautiful than ever. He once tells her "I'll take you to hell and back if that's what it takes to free you from the darkness" He takes her there, and she comes out shining! It is a dark romance but the spice isn't always at the forefront of the story. In one chapter she casually mentions having a bunch of back to back orgasms while they're learning more about eachother, parts like this give the story more credit then just being smut. It was truly art. In the about the author section she shares that she uses her writing to help heal her own personal trauma and I think that makes the story that much more beautiful. Well done Emily, I'm looking forward to reading more of your work! P.s I'd love a Cherry Bomb story of her own, she's definitely main characters energy!

The Art of Obsession by Emily Shore is a wildly captivating dark romance that grabs you from the very first page. It blends spice, suspense, and a twisted love story that will keep readers hooked, but it is not for the faint of heart. This book explores toxic relationships, extreme kinks, and psychological depth, making it a thrilling yet unsettling ride.

Everleigh and Acheron's relationship is both toxic and mesmerizing. Acheron, a deranged artist, stalks, imprisons, and manipulates Everleigh in a dangerous game of obsession. Their dynamic is intense and riddled with trauma, as Acheron slowly uncovers Everleigh’s darkest secrets—using sex and punishment as tools of both control and healing. Their chemistry is undeniable, but undeniably toxic, and it’s hard to decide if you want to root for them or scream at them to seek help.

One of the standout elements of this book is Cherry, Everleigh’s alter ego, who brings humor and sass to an otherwise heavy narrative. She’s a fun contrast to the dark themes, providing levity in moments of tension. The story does include graphic scenes, with blood play, knife play, and other BDSM elements, but it should be noted that there is a lack of explicit consent in the way these actions unfold, which may be a trigger for some readers.

While The Art of Obsession is undoubtedly intense, it is also beautifully crafted. The way Shore builds the characters' backstories and explores their trauma is impressive, and the dark themes are explored with a mix of brutality and tenderness. The story is also full of surprises, including a pregnancy trope (which, thankfully, is not the focus of the plot) and a shocking but memorable bonus chapter.

That being said, this book is not for everyone. The darkness and psychological complexity, coupled with the lack of consent, make it a challenging read. However, for fans of twisted, gritty romances with strong character development, The Art of Obsession will leave a lasting impact. It's a story that lingers long after the final page, and if you're open to its dark themes and intense romance, it's one that will definitely satisfy.

If you're looking for a book that will push boundaries and keep you on the edge of your seat, this one is a must-read. Just be sure to check the trigger warnings before diving in!

100/10, highly recommended for dark romance lovers.
