Rate this book
Will blackmail and backpacking on an island famous for its wolves mend the relationship between Amy and her daughter? Or will they be next to die on Isle Royale? Emboldened by her adventures in the Grand Canyon, Amy Warren again laces up her hiking boots. She ferries with her daughter, Meagan, to Isle Royal National Park. When volunteer ranger Sarah Rochon is accused by a co-worker of assault and theft, Amy is torn between spending precious time with Meagan and clearing her best friend’s name. When Amy rescues Remington, a pampered Havanese show dog, from the frigid waters of Lake Superior, he becomes her champion. Together they sniff out clues to the evil that threatens the natural tranquility of the magical island.

Jeanne Meeks began backpacking in 2005 and hiked across the Grand Canyon before writing "Rim to Rim," an adventure novel with a twist of mystery and romance. "Wolf Pack," set on Isle Royale, MI, is the second in the Backcountry Mystery series.

The first in the new Tennis Team Mystery series, Gator Bait, was a finalist in the Illinois Author Project in 2016. "Killer Served" followed soon after.

She is now knee-deep in research for her first historical fiction novel. Inspired by a genealogical search for her mother's ancestors, she is telling the story of the Founding Mothers of Quebec.

After twenty-eight years in business, Ms. Meeks and her husband sold their security surveillance company.

Ms. Meeks now writes full-time and is now VP of Gulf Coast Writers in SW Florida. She reads extensively, edits for other authors, and writes a blog at www.jeannemeeks.com about the Writing Life and other things she loves.

When not writing, Jeanne backpacks, kayaks, entertains the grandchildren, volunteers with the local historical society, and plays tennis and golf. She lives with her husband, since 1969, on Florida’s gulf coast and in a suburb of Chicago.

Yay! I hope this series with Amy Warren continues! It was just as I had hoped. Strong females with compassion and intellect. These are great characters to relate to for most anyone who picks up the book. I am recommending to both my teenage daughters as well as all my adult female friends. Actually my husband would enjoy it - we listen to audio books on trips and sometimes I read my books out loud as he drives.
Unlike the Grand Canyon setting in the first book, I have not been to Isle Royale, so this was a new adventure for me, so to speak. I now look forward to a trip there someday. The writing and descriptions are vivid and enticing. The characters are, as usual, well developed. I could see myself hiking around the island and wishing for water or food while hiding from the bad guys!
Another great book by Ms. Meeks!

An excellent story based around a camping trip that didn't go to plan and a surprise find of a dead body. Jeanne Meeks has woven a tale full of suspense and twists, murder and blackmail. There are characters you can cheerfully hate and others you like - but not they are not all as first appears. Based on a real island hopefully life isn't regularly like this - it would certainly put me off camping even though the island sounds so attractive. I would not hesitate to recommend this story. A great read.

Fun book but I was expecting more info about the park and scenery like in her Rim to Rim book. It was nice to be introduced to the daughter. I find it funny how these characters can endure so much trauma, one thing after another and carry on, but I guess it’s more like an action/adventure story in that way. I do hope the series continues but would like to see more description of the park where the story takes place.

I enjoyed this 2nd book and was interested to read about the island as another author I read did a book on the this particular park. Interesting book. Nice workarounds and an ending I didn't expect. Hopefully there will be another in this series

When you find a body on the first page, even if it isn’t actually a dead one, you know this book is going to be a gripper, and it doesn’t disappoint.
Jeanne Meeks has a remarkable ability to conjure up complex and enthralling stories out of everyday situations. In this case it was a camping trip to Isle Royale, a tourist destination in one of the Great Lakes, where Am Warren hoped to rebond with her slightly distant daughter after her own unexpected divorce. Each brought their own undeclared emotional baggage with them, but this soon subsided as the situation soon took control and they became unwittingly embroiled in mysterious and fatal goings on.
A camping trip seems an unlikely scenario for such events, even on an island which is both a National Park and home to several wild wolf packs. The trouble is that not all the wolves are four legged and furry. In fact those are the least of Amy and her daughter’s problems as, with the help of Amy’s recently acquired friend Sarah, who is spending the summer as a park volunteer warden, they struggle to make sense of injustice, mystery, corruption and dirty deeds.
Jeanne Meeks writes powerful stories that keep you turning the pages, and this book certainly lives up to the high standard she set with her first book, Rim to Rim. She weaves people’s lives together in unexpected and unpredictable ways, such that just as you think you are beginning to know a character, a new facet is revealed which completely changes your perspective. This takes great writing talent which Meeks has in abundance. She makes the reading easy but your brain gets a through workout sorting out the complexities of her plot.
Getting to the end makes you hungry for more, and I hope there will be a lot more from this author.

I liked the book, it was very well written and because of the excellent character development, I really felt as though I knew the characters. I always consider it a sign of good writing when I can smile or laugh and think to myself, "that's so like *insert character's name*" The first book was a little more interesting and captivating due to having done the Grand Canyon hike myself a few years ago. I would still recommend this book, though.

I have longed to visit Isle Royale, but since I don’t backpack or own a boat, it’s not likely to happen. For that reason, I was excited about the opportunity to “visit” the island virtually through the writer’s story, and the experience was successful. The story covered areas I will probably never see, that are well-described, and entertained me along the way. The story moves without letup, and is tightly written.
