The Rupert Annual 2026: A beautifully illustrated Christmas 2025 gift for fans of all ages, The 90th Rupert Annual features a brand-new story by Stuart Trotter
Whilst a far from perfect collection, I'm grateful to Stuart Trotter for keeping this Christmas tradition alive. The Bestall contributions are always a nostalgic joy. This year my two favourites (both his) were Rupert and the Learner (1972) and Rupert and the Butterflies (1959). John Harold's illustrations are almost as beautiful, but the rhyming couplets really let them down. Most of the adventures included this year's annual have a 'climate change' feel about them. However Rupert's Bonfire (1939) stands apart, featuring exploding 'squibs' (ignited by a stray cigarette butt!) and an (oddly chatty) escaped serpent. Trotter's latest Rupert adventure is sweet but the plot is unfortunately on the weak side, lacking plot substance. Nevertheless I really hope he keeps going with producing this annual.
