Her father’s best friend is the man-of-her-dreams.

Lady Henrietta Stafford can’t remember a time when she wasn’t fascinated by the tall, dark, melancholy Mr. Oliver Hartwell. But she knows she is meant for some other, far less compelling man. Her father’s friend would never be interested in her. She’s too young. She’s not beautiful or clever. And, of course, he’s already married.

A widower twice over, Oliver Hartwell’s life has been marked by failures—his boyhood-dream-turned-hellish-nightmare, his tragic marriages, the utter botch he is making of fatherhood. In truth, he has only ever found happiness in the home of his friend, the Duke of Bexton. But now that his friend’s oldest daughter has grown into a gorgeous, voluptuous woman, Oliver seems doomed to ruin his chances for love and affection, just as he has ruined everything else.

In one weak, wicked moment, ruination becomes the first step towards redemption . . .

Voluptuous is a stand-alone, slow-burn, steamy Regency romance novella and part of the The Bed Me Books series.

Felicity Niven is a hopeful romantic. Writing Regency romance is her third career after two degrees from Harvard. And you know what they say about third things? Yep, it’s a charm. She splits her time between the temperate South in the winter and the cool Great Lakes in the summer and thinks there can be no greater comforts than a pot of soup on the stove, a set of clean sheets on the bed, and a Jimmy Stewart film on a screen in the living room.

Should I read in order?
This one reads fine as a stand alone but is a part of Niven’s Lovelocks of London and Bed Me universe. It is also a part of the Curves and Cravats novella series and stands alone within that.

Basic plot:
Henrietta is compromised by her father’s best friend...

Give this a try if you want:
- Regency – 1819
- age gap – older hero
- father’s best friend
- put a baby in me
- full figured heroine
- the heroine actually enjoys traditional pursuits like embroidery (and I loved that! I’m so tired of romances pooing on embroidery!)
- hero is a cartographer and artist
- child in the story – hero has a son
- hero is a thoughtful gift giver
- sooooo much unrequited longing
- compromised heroine
- opposites attract – a bit of a sunshine/grump feel – there heroine is more bubbly and extroverted and the hero is stoic and quiet (most of the time...)
- higher steam but a slower burn - I settled at 3ish scenes in a shorter page count

Ages:
- hero is 43, heroine is 21

First line:
“I want a child.”

My thoughts:
Ohhh there was SO much to love about this novella. So, so much. Novellas can be a bit hard sometimes because they are shorter – so to establish all this longing, tension, background, character depth, but still have development on page...well sometimes I understand if some things in a novella fall a bit short. But Niven took this novella and filled it with all those things and more.

She included lovely tension building in a novella without making it rushed. You were longing right with along with these mains to cave and when they do it is so, so delicious. She makes you fall in love with them as people as you get to know what has made them who they are. I loved these characters so much, and they had such a believable HEA. This novella was just perfection to me!

She even made me like the kid . I tend to stay away from children in my romances – I am in the thick of child rearing – but sometimes I don’t mind it. But in this one I looooved what it added to the story. It just balanced everything and showed how much Oliver needed to be taught and how perfect Henrietta was for their family.

This romance has so much heart, and the characters deserve so much love and they have such a sweet and believable falling into each other. I just adored it. I’ve read a handful of the Curves and Cravats series so far and they have all been really amazing and delightful but shhhhh this one is my favorite so far.

Favorite book: Oh that is HARD. Because I LOVED this novella. But I also really loved Duke the Halls. And I also really loved Bed Me, Earl – that hero was so dang sweet. Another one hardly mentioned though, but still clings to my heart with a scene of the hero standing in the rain though is When Ardor Blooms. But….maybe Bed Me, Baron is my favorite?? That hero annoyed me so much then utterly broke my heart. And stomped all over. And then picked it up and put it together and cherished it. So….yeah maybe Bed Me, Baron.

I hesitate to describe this book as an age-gap, dad’s best friend historical romance, because it was so much more than those tropes!

I loved this swoony story about Henrietta, the titular voluptuous FMC who has been pining after her father’s solemn best friend for as long as she can remember. Meanwhile Oliver thinks he is too old and too damaged for Henrietta, even if in his loneliness he can’t help but bask in her warm and lively personality.

There was so much yearning and longing between the characters, which in some books would have me thinking “just talk to each other!” but Felicity Niven’s storytelling kept me invested in their journey.

I really loved this one, and would not change a thing about it.

⭐⭐⭐
3 stars.

➕ What I liked :

Curvy/full-figured heroine. 👍

Tall and curvy/full-figured heroine. 👍

Some parts of the story were interesting.

The hero was not a rogue/rake or womanizer.

The hero was not a aristocrat.

The child in the story acts like the age he is.

➖ What I disliked:

Too anachronistic.

Cringey.

Some parts were too rushed even for a novella.

The chemistry and romance/romantic build-up was lacking and unconvincing…. Even for a novella.

Cliché and stereotypical.
(The heroine being curvy/full-figured and very insecure/self-conscious and self-deprecating about her body and having low self-esteem…. The heroine also had issues with internalized fat-shaming/body-shaming etc.)

The heroine calling herself dumb/stupid in different ways… she was not dumb/stupid… she just did not think things through properly or consider multiple possibilities.

The heroine also negatively compares herself and her body to other women.

The body-shaming/fat-shaming from a side character towards the heroine.
(Not only is it bad to add this…. But also it added absolutely nothing to the story/plot … it was just unnecessary and out of place … the side character was already being a entitled misogynistic douchebag towards the heroine but also indirectly to her sisters… so why add body-shaming/fat-shaming to the story/scene etc.???
It is also anachronistic and too modern for many reasons but mainly that it was Not a “bad” thing to be “𝐩𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐩” 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐲 𝐨𝐫 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬 in the early 19th century/19th century.)

How clueless the hero was about sex and pleasure and a woman’s body.
(The hero is a 43 year old man… that had been married twice and has a son.
Either the hero was stupid or just did not care about anyone's pleasure but his own… because even if the book takes place in the 19th century No adult is that clueless about sex/pleasure... especially not a 40+ man.)🤦

The heroine is a bit too naive and willfully ignorant about her own body/pleasure and also sex….. even for the era/time period the story takes place.
But the heroine is at least not as OTT naive and willfully ignorant as some other heroines are in many other books.

The steam was stilted and not very good.

🙄😮‍💨😤
𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧....Women in the early 19th century/19th century did Not speak or feel or act the same way as some women do in the 21st century…(about their bodies etc.)…
𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 “𝐩𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐩” 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐯𝐲 𝐨𝐫 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬 in the early 19th century/19th century was NOT a “bad” thing…. And it is possible to write heroines that are “plump” or curvy or full-figured and then also make them strong, confident, intelligent, self-assured etc. and still have them feel like they belong in the century they are in…. And also not be stereotypical.)

Believability/plausibility issues‎ etc.
(That the heroine or other “plump” or curvy or full-figured women would have had no suitors because of their full-figured bodies…🤦🤦
But also women of all sizes and shapes have always existed and there were curvy/full-figured women in all classes and levels of society from the maids to the farmers wife to the aristocratic/noble woman during the regency era, the Victorian era and before and after that.
And they would have had suitors just like any other women….. no matter if their body size/shape was “in trend” or not.

What would have been “undesirable” about the heroine and women for the aristocratic men/ The Ton would have been if she/they were very extroverted/extroverted or outspoken or a blue stocking or something like that.)

And the heroine was too obsessed with the hero to really noticed any other men… and says herself that no other man could compare to the hero… so she was unconsciously and consciously dismissing other men.

The way the side character (the entitled misogynistic douchebag) talked to the heroine...
The side character was also a aristocrat/peer… but the heroine is a Duke's daughter ( A Duke was the highest rank of the peerage)
And not only did aristocrats/peers not talk to each other like that… the heroines rank would have given her privilege, entitlement, “superiority”, haughtiness etc.
But not only that she also had supportive and loving parents.
So even if she would have to “act like a lady” she would not have tolerated that behavior or been negatively affected by it or timid about it.)

The hero is a little too beta.

The age gap was a little too big...especially since the heroine was only 18/19 when they married and even-though they did not consummate the marriage until 2 years after the marriage when the heroine was 21…. the hero was 41 years old when they married so a age gap of at least 22 years…. It just was too big of age gap for me.
It is a preference thing… about different age gaps…. But they story would have benefited from the heroine being a little older maybe 25.

Too much miscommunication/misunderstanding in too many parts of the story.

An age-gap, father's best friend, & voluptuous heroine historical romance. The hero is widowed twice with a five-year-old son. The H/h are caught in a compromising position and must marry. They do not consummate their marriage until two years, so I was a little disappointed that this novella was not more steamy.

Once again Niven wins my heart. She writes characters that are real, characters with imperfections and characters that stay with you long past the end. From the very start I found myself relating to the insecurities of Henrietta, she loves herself, her body but when faced with the expectations of the ton you can’t help but judge yourself. I especially loved the contrast of potential suitors, despite Oliver’s stoicism he can’t help but look good in comparison to the clodpole that is Geoffrey. This story is a slow burn with the beautiful anguish of pining and when the burn ignites, it is with a fury of passion. After reading Be Not Coy, the story of Hen’s parents, it gives you a bit of insight into the type of upbringing she might have had and the example she compares herself to. It is a wonderful story and paired with this one gives a truly beautiful experience.

I don’t know where to start. I’ve been waiting on this book for a long time and we finally have it! It did NOT disappoint. I adored Henrietta (a Duke’s daughter) and Oliver’s (yeoman farmer and father’s best friend) story. Despite the 22 year age gap, it really worked well and felt normal. He was not a predator by any stretch and he did not groom her in any sense as a child.

Ms. Niven’s storytelling is absolutely stellar. She has a knack for taking more ordinary people with real-life issues and giving them a more than believable fairytale. This story had so much depth and feeling, despite the shorter story. You could feel the plights of both Henrietta’s stigmas and Oliver’s. Your heart will break for both of them, but especially Oliver. His stern demeanor and downcast personality is a stark contrast to Henrietta’s sunshine. The way that Henrietta gently creates love and warmth in Oliver and his son is such a beautiful experience to watch. She was definitely one of my favorite heroines. I loved how she was strong and confident, but humble, gentle, vivacious, and playful. Even though she was only 21, she certainly showed maturity and grace. I also loved her parents too. They both had me cracking up!

I hope you read this story. It’s packed with both heartbreaking and beautiful moments. It’s a story of true heart and kindness and reminds us that even the most stoic individuals can still feel and crave love and sunshine.

Genuinely one of my favorite historical romances. I've read it twice and I can see myself reading it for a third, fourth, maybe fifth time. Henrietta and Oliver were a perfect pair and I love them deeply. So much yearning, so much spice. Perfection.

I'm not sure how Niven could have written this novella better. It's not *good.* It's absolutely fantastic. "Voluptuous" is a captivating read that pulls the reader in from page one or should I say, from the first sentence. I have yet to read something authored by Niven that I didn't enjoy. Now, I don't want you to take that as I *have* to rate her highly because I am already a Niven Fan Girl. Yes, I enjoy her books more than should be allowed by a reader, but she is, truly, simply that strong of a writer. She has such a way of taking complicated, complex storylines and melding them with spicy-spice and raw human emotions. You won't be disappointed with something written by Niven, and I think
"Voluptuous" is an awesome place to start if you have never picked up a book by her.

A neat approach that Niven takes in some of her writing is that she flips between past and present with her characters. "Voluptuous" opens with Hen and Oliver already married. Readers are then transported to the past where they learn how Hen and Oliver came to be married by compromise along with all of the trials they have endured in the time since then. I feel as though many books with married MCs don't provide the reader with enough details about the "before." I found Oliver and Hen's past just as interesting as their present. This novella feels and reads like a complete novel with such well-rounded details, situations, and emotions.

Oliver. Oliver. You are SO tortured. Oliver is definitely in my top five favorite heroes of 2024. Silver fox zaddy who is totally low-key-horning for his wife/a delightful gift giver? Yes. Just, yes. Oliver achieves such healing in a multitude of ways with the help of Hen. He becomes a better husband, lover, friend, and father by finally seeing himself through the eyes of someone who truly loves and understands him.

I adored seeing Hen and Oliver finally come together as I was rooting for them from the very beginning. It was a delight to see unrequited love x1000 play out on page. Their love is fun, flirty, healing, and definitely sexy.

As for steam, it is Nivens- the steam is going to be steamy. Nivens uses a variety of explicit and non-explicit terms in her writing with a variety of actions and scene lengths.

This is a story in three parts, an excruciatingly slow burn and heartbreakingly beautiful. What starts off very slow and sweet, ends in the most delectably scrumptious way...

Henrietta is light, love and warmth - the best of both her parents - a luscious redhead full of life with a passion for riding, a little impulsive, kind, considerate and nurturing. She knows she’s not perfect, but she loves herself and knows her own worth.
Tall, thin and grey, Oliver is a loner, a gloomy empty shell of a man with a tragic past who believes himself a screw-up, an unlovable brute, incapable of love. His visits to his best friend - her father - the only bright spot in his dreary life.
She’s had a crush on him for some time, and he only just discovered his attraction to her.

A dark study, a moment of solace and a kiss lead to a marriage of compromise...
Thinking himself an unworthy old lecher, he offers her the moon and the stars, everything except what she wants most - a true physical and passionate marriage - like her parents.

Caterpillars, custard, careful consideration, small gestures, a little boy hungry for love, secret adoration and so much pining. A young woman finding her voice, asking for what her heart desires most and slowly cracking her husband’s shell to find a man burning for her - all of her - mind, body and soul.

I was honoured to read this tale for the first time in July and I’ve reread it so many times since. The detail, the emotion, the richness of these characters and their romance never seizes to capture my heart. It’s 100% pure and magnificent Felicity Niven, and I think it’s absolutely exquisite!

This is a pretty new author for me. This is only my 4th book by her. I read her The Bed Me Books series and for the most part enjoyed it. Although I have only read the authors I normally read in this series, I have been enjoying the stories.

Cute story. It read like a quidk read even thought it was 180 pgs. I read like a shorter book. Still a nice read. I enjoyed Henrietta and Oliver. I'm so glad how things turned out.

so, I got an ARC for this book, I was DESPERATE to get my hands on this book, and after finishing it. I had so many thoughts, like I didn't want it to be over. it took me a while to write anything about it, cause I've been ill and I might have to try to circle back at some point to try to be more coherent.
This book, which follows Henrietta, the daughter of the couple in Be Not Coy is incredibly heartwarming, tender and sweet. I mean, I hate children, but weirdly I feel like I want these two to have a dozen, and I'm actually disappointed there were no scenes of them having pregnancy sex, and her being knocked up? Like who even AM I?!?! Why would I want to read that? WHAT DID THIS BOOK DO TO ME!?!?!
I presume cause these two burrowed into my heart, and I just want them to have everything, I presume they want. And a large family to share their love with seems to be one of those things. (Oliver has a line where he says "He could give her scores of babies, keep her swollen with child for years on end.") and apparently, unlike what I would usually think. which would be something akin to. "Ick, no I do not want to see that." My immediate thoughts are, "YES! Absolutely, Oliver is the most precious thing in the entire world, must be protected at all costs, and I want him to have everything he wants" This book, CHANGED me and I'm honestly not even sure I'm entirely comfortable with that. :P

Both Hen and Oliver are stellar characters, I gravitate most towards Oliver, because in this Gloomy-Sunshine romance, our sad-boy hero is absolutely precious. It seems depressed slender guys are my catnip, and I just want to give Oliver all the hugs. He isn't like your usual grumpy alpha hole, he is just incredibly sad and dejected and he takes all that hurt, and turns it inwards, never against other people. He just doesn't know how to express himself, and he thinks no one can ever love him, and he is totally incapable of expressing all the love he feels because of his anxieties and self-loathing. He is totally devoted to trying to do his best by Henrietta, his love is shown by acts of service. But he feels so incredibly unworthy that he needs her to lead the way in some regards and show him how he can make her happy.

Henrietta is also somewhat unusual, she is a plus-sized heroine, but she doesn't hate her body, it is strong and lets her ride and frolic, and she is so warm, caring and giving. But she isn't some self-sacrificing martyr. She feels she isn't interesting or smart enough, but that's just cause she is kind of the normie calm one, in a family of weirdoes and extroverted big personalities. Henrietta isn't the sort of person to make a spectacle of herself, she is the calm in the storm, she is shelter from the wind, and the sunshine that will make the flowers bloom.
She is by nature, a nurturer who doesn't dwell on the problems, but tries to make every situation better and find happiness where she can. No glass half-empty dourness with this girl. I think she can easily be misread, as a simple uncomplicated character, but she isn't that. She is just an incredibly strong person, who chooses deliberately to not make the best of every situation, and to proactively try to make things better instead of railing against what is. she is a pragmatist in many ways.

Also, this book is an age-gap slow burn, to EXPLOSIVE sex, and I'm here for it. The age gap works really well in this book, and because of who the characters are, you never feel like there is an uncomfortable power dynamic, which is honestly hard to do, especially in a histrom. Oliver might have been married twice, but he is incredibly sexually inexperienced. You get the feeling he has read some smutty texts and has a voracious sexual appetite hidden in there somewhere, but never actually slept with anyone but his wives, and that went so horribly poorly he's gotten some sexual trauma along the way that needs to be unravelled. In this regards, our characters feel like they are on equal footing, and when their sexual journey really starts, sparks fly, and the reader is left SCORCHING in their wake.

Let me start out by saying that writing reviews for anything Felicity writes puts me in a bit of a panic. I feel like I'll never find the right words to describe how much I loved it. Once again, this is the case. *Sigh*

Lady Henrietta Stafford was raised in a loving, supportive, boisterous home knowing that whatever life dealt her, she'll always have open arms waiting for her in both celebration and consolation. Sadly, this love and acceptance from her family didn't extend to the sticklers of high society. Thought to be empty-headed, paired with her height and curves, made her an outcast which ended in a terrible come out season with no prospects. Hen didn't really mind though. She'd rather be at home, riding her horse, and keeping watch for a chance visit from her father's best friend, Oliver Hartwell.

Oliver Hartwell is a failure. He failed to realize his childhood dream. He completely misjudged his first wife and failed in making her happy. He selfishly sought a second wife, hoping to have a home, family and finally be content. Once again, he was denied happiness when she tragically died in childbirth. And now he's failing to raise his son not knowing how to give him the love and care he needs. His only source of peace comes from visiting his closest friend and his family. But in one weak, wicked moment he lost that haven too.

I'm in love! I'm in love with Oliver. I'm in love with Hen. I'm in love with their love. There's nothing I love more than a scarred/tortured hero and Oliver has to be one of the saddest, lowest, most desolate MC's I've ever read. The fear he has of going forward in his life after two tragic events was near crippling. My heart ached for him. His feelings of unworthiness brought me to tears a few times. Watching his character grow throughout the story is one of the most satisfying journeys I've read.

Henrietta truly is a radiant force in Oliver's life, shining brightly through his darkest days. It's as if she knows exactly what he needs—a guiding light to help him navigate through the fog of self-doubt and despair. With each conversation, through laughter, and shared moments, she slowly helps him realize that life can hold joy again. She encourages him to open his heart, to let love and laughter back in, and to recognize that it’s never too late to begin anew.

Felicity Niven's writing is truly a work of art; it's flawless in every sense. Each sentence flows effortlessly, making it impossible for any reader to not be captivated. What sets her apart is her remarkable ability to connect me deeply with her character. She casts a spell that allows me to feel everything they experience—their joy, sorrow, and every emotion in between. This connection is nothing short of magical. The worlds she builds are rich and immersive, drawing you into places that feel both vivid and real. Each story is packed with emotional weight that lingers long after I've turned the last page. Honestly, I could read her books twenty times, and each time, I would still find myself swept away by the same intense feelings. It’s a testament to her skill and creativity. Felicity Niven has secured her spot as one of my top-tier favorite authors, and her writing continues to inspire and move me in ways I never thought possible. If you haven't experienced her words yet, do yourself a favor and dive into her incredible stories.

I was honored to receive a complimentary copy from the author (Thank you!) All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Voluptuous, a novella by Felicity Niven that is part of her Bed Me series as well as the Curves & Cravats series featuring full-figured heroines, is a lovely story featuring Lady Henrietta Stafford, a tall, rather curvy, and buxom duke's daughter, and her father's close friend, gentleman farmer Mr. Oliver Hartwell, 22 years her senior. Usually I am not a fan of such a large age gap, but Felicity Niven handles the age difference between her MC's deftly . By the time they consummate their marriage, Henrietta is a woman of 21, who has fully blossomed in her roles as wife and stepmother to Oliver's young son, Nathaniel. She is a ray of sunshine in Oliver's gray world, which has been marred by the loss of two wives, and despite her youth and inexperience, Hen(rietta) teaches him how to give and receive love, both from his son and from her.

It's a story that hugs your heart in all the best ways by the end and leaves the reader rooting for Hen and Oliver to abandon their prior (and incorrect) assumptions about each other and form a close-knit family that loves and feels joy together. It packs a poignant punch in just 180 pages, and it is so well-written that the prose flows beautifully.

I really enjoyed this novella and recommend it to anyone who's ever wanted the curvy heroine to snag the man of her dreams and live happily ever after with him.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy from the author, and I am leaving my honest review voluntarily.

A slump breaking, quick steamy read!

Felicity Niven had broken my reading slump before with the Bed me series, so I jumped at this prequel, Novela ARC! I had been obsessing over the covers of this entire series by the way and intend to get to them soon, too!

TW: some fat shaming, a big age gap

Felicity Niven's writing (prologues especially) throws a punch to your chest. In a good way. I quiet like how fast-paced it was, and even when a big age gap is not my choice of romance, usually I couldn't stop turning pages.

Henrietta is blessed with a loving, large family, understanding parents, and a father's friend she has fallen for at a young age. It was wonderful to see her transformation from a young girl to a woman and how her infatuation and longing converts to real feelings and passion. I liked that she is portrayed to be ordinary without special skills, but she's a trooper. With cheer, she marches through her failed season, disappointments, a marriage of convenience, and her stepson. Biggest of them all her husband who has said he wouldn't impose on her.
Oh, but she very much wants him to.
As a young bride, she is shy to have voiced it. It’s nice that she expresses her affection with custard.
And I love that custard making scene when she is sixteen!!

Oliver, understandably, had insecurities and guilt about his age gap, his previous wives, and his ability to keep a young, vibrant wife happy. He could be a cinnamon roll hero, though he takes his time to understand his wife! Forever! Ha!

It's nice that finally, Hen is grown in courage enough to ask for a baby, and finally, we get somewhere.

Thank you for sharing this with me!

So sweet, so heart-wrenching, so perfect! Felicity Niven’s Curves and Cravats novella is a veritable MASTERPIECE! It’s the story of two soul mates (it’s the only way to call them!), divided by a conspicuous age gap, but united by an undeniable love. Oliver has a tragic past and he’s a broken man. His only comfort is the friendship of the Duke of Bexton and his family. Henrietta is young, but has a big heart and an endearing fierceness in her love for the people around her. They are both gorgeous, perfectly fleshed out characters, as are the side characters surrounding them. And the writing is the wonderful, delicate and straightforward prose I’ve come to expect by this author.
I want to add that I really hope that those who picked this novella without knowing this author will be enticed to read all the novels of the awesome Bed Me series, whose characters make a brief appearance in this story.

This is another winner from Felicity Niven. It was deliciously steamy, romantic and I just adored the Hero, Oliver Hartwelll and the heroine, Lady Henrietta Stafford.

This book had so much heart and character development despite being a novella. Henrietta is a breath of fresh air. She is always happy and positive and brings so much joy and healing to Oliver's life.

I love reading about Age gaps, a voluptuous heroine and the Forbidden love aspect as the Hero is best friends with the heroine's father. I loved how Henrietta and Oliver had hidden their attraction but had always adored from afar.

I am a huge Niven fan and cannot wait for the next book in the Bed me series...
I received an arc via the author and this opinion is my own and review is submitted voluntarily.

Felicity delivers yet another scrumptious story for us to devour. 🥰 She already knows I'd read her grocery lists. Lol.

It all starts with a kind gesture and a stolen kiss. But they are caught😱

He's so stern and very down on himself. 2 tragic marriages to cruel and sickly women. A child he barely knows. Oliver is a mess.

But Hen has only had eyes for her father's very close friend. And none of the boys her own age seem to want anything to do with her. She's not fashionable in societies eyes. Which is unfortunate because she's the kindest, most loving, sweetheart you'll ever meet.

I loved that they got to know each other slowly. That her care and consistent love, healed Oliver of his past sorrows. She showed him the way out. It was beautiful.

✨Novella review: Voluptuous by Felicity Niven - Out Now! ✨

Niven accomplishes so much in the space of a novella.

And this one is filled with so much heart. More than a romance (and certainly expectation-defying), this story captures how grief can so easily turn to self-hatred, without our realizing it or giving it permission.

Our female main character, Henrietta, is the epitome of a sunshine FMC. I can’t even call this read a Grumpy/Sunshine, because she is SO full of light that our MMC, Oliver, cannot help but be changed by it.

And the best part? Hen’s light comes from a loving family, who never shied away from difficult conversations and showed her her value from a young age. Her inner confidence is, understandably, tested by the central conflict in this storyline - but it adds to the gorgeous story Niven is telling.

The YEARNING, y’all.

✨Stand-alone in a series of novellas,
Curves & Cravats
✨Age gap
✨Father’s best friend
✨Single dad
✨Body positive
✨SLOOOOOOW burn (but, when it burns, it is HIGH on the spice scale!)

Thank you to Felicity for the eARC of this work in exchange for an honest review. Voluptuous was my first Niven read and I knew within the first chapter that it will not be my last.

If Felicity Niven writes it, I know it’s going to be a five star read. And this novella definitely is. I don’t read a lot of novellas because they usually leave me feeling like I needed more. But this one is perfect. Excellent character development even in such a short time.

I loved the characters. Perfect grumpy and sunshine. The FMC Henrietta is sweet and kind and open-hearted and you just want to be her friend. And the MMC Oliver is sad and damaged and you just want to hug him and tell him he’s a good guy. The 22 year age gap between them was definitely not an impediment to their chemistry.

And they had chemistry. Great dialogue. And there’s a lot of spice packed into such a little book. In fact it manages to be both a slow burn with lots of pining AND a very spicy book with plenty of great open door scenes.

If you need a quick read that will give you ALL the happy feelings, be sure to pick up this novella today on Amazon.

To Lady Henrietta Stafford, nobody compares to her dad's giant curmudgeonly best friend, Mr. Oliver Hartwell, but he's twenty-two years her senior and she knows any future between them would be an utter pipe dream. That doesn't mean it hasn't pained her to see the really awful hand of cards he'd been dealt through the years. Oliver has been widowed twice, the second time during childbirth leaving him a young son to raise alone. He is a walking raincloud who only ever finds happiness while spending time with his best friend Crispin and his family, which includes the very lovely and very young, Lady Henrietta. While he is visiting their family home one night, Henrietta finds Oliver weeping alone in her father's study and tries to offer him comfort...which lands them in a big 'ol marriage of convenience after her dad and the rest of his party walk in on them in an embrace.

After assuring her they would remain married in name only, Hen believes Oliver is completely uninterested because he harbors too much affection for his deceased wives. Henrietta wasn't totally left in the dark about marital relations so she knows what is missing, but she's so used to being overlooked due to societal beauty standards and stigmas, that she is afraid to even vocalize that she would like more out of her marriage. Oliver's previous marriages both lacked intimacy and ended very traumatically, for which he takes full blame, and he refuses to potentially harm Henrietta because he thinks he is just an infatuated gross old man. If all of that combined isn't the recipe for a very great on-page moment of realization, I don't know what is.

AND IT WAS! What they both lacked in knowledge and experience, they very certainly make up for in moxie after realizing they might be able to have it all together. The magical powers of one honest conversation strike again!

It'm afraid y'all have another 5-star age gap novella to read this October because Henrietta and Oliver are a big 'ol chef's kiss. I have loved everything I have read by Felicity Niven (so everything she has written because I have zero chill when I discover an author I love), and this was no exception. It's smart, witty, steamy, and contains a great cast of secondary characters. (Henrietta's parents and Oliver's son are so delightful!)

Do yourself a favor and, if you're able, carve out a little uninterrupted reading time when you do pick this one up--you're going to want to read it in just one sitting. I do not think anything could have pried this book out of my hand.

I received an ARC of this novella in exchange for my honest review.

Voluptuous is a part of the Curves & Cravats series and will be released next Wednesday, October 16th!

I don’t know how Felicity Niven can write such a tender, sensual, beautiful story in the span of 169 pages, but she has with her new release, Voluptuous. I mean it when I say this is her very best—she just gets better and better and truly knows how to write the stories I long to hear.

Voluptuous is Oliver’s story just as much as Henrietta’s, even though she is definitely the star. It’s a story about years of unrequited longing, overcoming grief, sharing joy, building a family, and what it means to let someone into your heart. I absolutely adored Henrietta. She is just so good, so innocently free and is the most selfless joyful character I have read in awhile. And just as light and airy as Hen is, Oliver is shadowed, carrying a load of gloominess on his narrow frame, a man who denies himself (almost to his detriment) because of heartache and self-imposed loneliness. Niven stitches these two opposites together so well that before they even realize it, they are incomplete without the other. Oliver is in desperate need of light and love and someone who places value on him. Henrietta needs a man who loves her body and soul and places emphasis on her heart as much as her looks. There are some beautifully quiet moments where Henrietta is talking to Nathaniel (Oliver’s son) that just made my heart soar. The way Hen opens up Oliver’s heart through the way she cares for others is so magnificently done. I cherished the slowburn of agape love developing between them.

As with the best slowburns, the payoff is worth the wait, and true to her previous novels, Niven gives her readers stellar sexual tension and bedroom scenes. The balance between two people who are so desperate to discover each other contrasted with them in reality having all the time in the world, made for the best and most loaded romantic interactions. There are even a few surprises thrown in for good measure and I loved that Henrietta and Oliver were able to learn intimacy together, regardless of their past experience.

Followers of Niven’s newsletter will get a second bonus epilogue as well, a don’t miss for more desperate husband wanting his wife vibes. I hope we see Henrietta and Oliver in a future book; they are probably my favorite couple yet! I received an early copy from the author. All opinions are my own.

Can a novella be more perfect? I don’t think so. Voluptuous had everything I could’ve wanted a tight and tidy package!

Henrietta has been in love with her father’s friend for as long as she can remember. Mr. Oliver Hartwell has always been solemn and had an air of heartbreak around him. Every time he would visit their, Henrietta could could only think of trying to bring a little joy to Mr. Hartwell.

Until one day, an innocent action to cheer a despondency Mr Hartwell results in an engagement between the two of them.

Oliver knows that he’s done wrong and hates training the young and vivacious Henrietta to him, but it’s the only choice. But in this relationship, he has also made a choice to not impose himself upon her. Is the least he can do in this unwanted union.

… but what does a young bride married to the man of her dreams do when he won’t come to her bedroom?

I absolutely loved this story and Felicity‘s choice to tell Oliver and Henrietta’s romance in a nonlinear fashion. Starting at point C and then reverting back to an and B really amped up the anticipation of their joining.

I was impressed and pleased at how the age gap is addressed between the characters and justified. I think it was handled really well and used to build up the characters and their relationship.

I don’t know if it was the buildup and the anticipation, but once these two found their way together, it was explosive!!! And I was loving every moment!!

As part of the curves and cravats series, felicity fully embraces the theme and delivers a curvy heroin that suffers from bullying and is found wanting in public opinion, but she eventually finds a love that ends up worshipping every one of those gorgeous curves!!!

This is one of those books I could not put down and hated that it had to end!!!

Voluptuous is the tenth installment of the multi-author series Curves and Cravats featuring curvy heroines and is also a prequel to Bed Me, Viscount part of the author’s Bed Me series. There’s also a short story, Be Not Coy, available featuring Henrietta’s parents. While these are all part of the Niven universe, this novella can be read as a standalone.

This fast paced novella is full of tropes that pulls the reader in. Enticing and engaging your emotions with characters that pull at your heartstrings. The story is broken into three parts, the first one detailing how their marriage of convenience comes to be. The second part jumps through the first two years of their marriage and the third part encompasses their leap into intimacy.

I was curious how I’d like the large age gap but the way the author handled it worked for me. Being a slow burn and the choices the characters made in the third part were part of that.

I loved both the MC, each with their own vulnerabilities to overcome. They both felt they were responsible for causing the marriage but choosing to do little things for one another prior to being intimate was thoughtful and I loved it.

Oliver has a three year son when him and Henrietta marry, and the relationship she builds with his son and also engages Oliver in parenthood was heartwarming.

Overall, this is an enticing, endearing, and steamy read.

There’s three encounters with several other references to self pleasure that each of the MC engages in but didn’t include them in my count.

I received an advance ecopy from the author. All opinions are my own.

Voluptuous is an opposites attract, age gap novella. Felicity Niven once again works her historical romance magic, and creates a perfect short, sweet, and steamy story.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Henrietta has crushed on her dad’s best friend Oliver for years. But Oliver, 22 years her senior, didn’t notice, busy burying two wives and attempting to care for his young son. Once he’s left alone with kind Henrietta, though, he can’t resist her and her delicious, curvy body, and kisses her. But, the pair gets caught and Oliver offers to marry her to avoid a scandal. Now that the two are married, can Henrietta convince Oliver that they are truly meant to be together?

I’m not usually an age gap fan, but this dad’s bff romance with a curvy FMC is fantastic. Even though Henrietta gets nasty comments from members of the ton about her size, I love that she’s is the one who is more comfortable in her own skin. And, it helps that her parents are amazing and supportive no matter what.

Oliver is one of those romance characters who readers just want to hug and say “tell her how you really feel!” He has some baggage to work through, though, and I adore how patient Henrietta is with him. And, once he decides to give into his desires, the chemistry between them is sizzling.

Well written novellas hit just right for me, and Voluptuous is a great example. The story is short and sweet, but Niven doesn’t skimp on characters, plot, or heat. If you are a fan of opposites attract, age gap romances, you’ll adore Voluptuous.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Reasons to pick this up:
🐎 regency novella
🐎 age gap (22y)
🐎 father’s best friend
🐎 slow burn
🐎 curvy FMC

Thoughts:
This is a novella, but it still tells a full story with well rounded characters. A full figure FMC who just brings joy and light to a sad sack widower. But - Hen has had a crush on her father’s friend for years. He is just such an Eeyore. Her well intentioned offer of comfort to a family friend in distress is the catalyst for a hasty marriage. Oliver beats himself up endlessly about the situation he finds himself in with Hen with a lot of assumptions. Slowly he realizes that she is very much different from his previous 2 wives and is an excellent mother to his son. So when she asks him for a baby - he finally lets go of his nonsense. And she gets bold too, as she slowly comes to understand his MO and figures out how to get what she wants. And aren’t we all surprised that the strong silent Oliver has a potty mouth…… The last chapters of the book are where all the steam happens. The first chapters are sweet and tell the tale of developing domestic intimacy.

I am grateful to the author for a chance to read an ARC and share my thoughts!

This is an age gap, grumpy/sunshine story. Henrietta is a duke’s daughter and doesn’t fit the ideal body type of the ton. She has started to give up on a love match but she has secretly been in love with her father’s best friend, Oliver. Oliver is a twice widower with a frail son and feels he is undeserving of another wife. A moment of weakness on both their parts has now sealed their fate. The beginning of the story was a bit of an odd jump around from future, to past and then present time, but once past that I really enjoyed the story. The characters are well written and I loved that they were imperfect according to society standards at the time but perfect for each other. Oliver had a tragic back story and had a lot of trauma to work through but I loved how Henrietta helped mend the relationship he had with his son. Their story of falling in love was full of mistakes and took patience but what a sweet happily ever after it made. The characters have chemistry and the spice is good. The story is well paced and complete for a shorter book. Overall an enjoyable, quick read.

Oliver and Henrietta story:

Well, that was worth the waiting!! If you never read any book from Felicity Niven, please do now!! Her Bed Me series is one of the best an ever read and this one didn’t disappoint me! It’s the story of a sunshine girl named Henrietta who fell in love with her father’s friend, Oliver, the grumpy and so broken man. It’s an age gap story and really it’s just fit them so well. Oliver will learn from Henrietta, how to love, how to be a father, how to be happy. The chemistry between the two characters is so intense and I was rooting for Henrietta all along the book. It’s well written, no downtime, just perfect writing. Felicity Niven have a way to create characters with a lot of depth and so much fun to watch them grow into their stories. Did I saw Phin name? Maybe 🥰 I love all her books and I can’t wait to see what’s next in the Bed Me series. 5 stars but deserves a 10 stars! Congrats Felicity, you got me hooked again!!

I absolutely adored this book, once again Felicity shows her incredible talent by creating a strong woman who knows what she wants, and she knows how to get it. Henrietta knows her hero and she understands that sometimes patience is required... But she also uses the opportunity to develop her character, personality and improve the lives of those around her. My favourite tropes are involved, including a curvy heroine and a much older hero. Felicity's exquisite writing means that the reader can enter the world the characters inhabit, and truly immerse themselves in the story. This is a must read, especially if you're looking for well rounded developed characters, who learn & grow from their past experiences.

I was kindly gifted this ARC but I always buy my own copy on release day, release day for Voluptuous is the 16th October.
