Saint Code #2
Constable
When a woman is murdered by a vampire, St. Augustina must become the Constable.
St. Augustina’s tenure as the new constable of the Magic Guild Guard is not going well. The office staff quit in protest on her first day, the community regards her with suspicion, and now she has a vampire murder to solve–except no one will acknowledge her jurisdiction.
Not an auspicious start for the cyber-augmented former spy.
It’s going to take a lot of work to prove she is the right person for the job. They may not want her, but she knows they need her, especially if she is going to solve this murder.
As the clues emerge, seeming to lead back to the Magic Guild Guard, it seems a larger conspiracy may be in play. With the only person willing to help her implicated in the crime, St. Augustina knows that if she doesn't get to the bottom of the mystery soon, everyone in the Magic Guild, not to mention the entire Magic Community, may be in danger.

This is a wild ride of a read. I highly recommend reading previous book _The Lost _. These books are all part of the Lucky Devil series.
Saint Augustine is an enhanced human--not by choice. Her choices were assigned to her by questionable humans.
She has been attached to a magical being now. That is covered in the previous book.
St. Augustine has a job. She's been assigned as a Constable for the Magical Guild.
And is IMMEDIATELY dumped into a murder assignment. This is just after her entire team deserts her--save for one.
A minor pout is that the odd creatures need to be introduced. Some people may not recognize Officer/Agent Papaqui's species. Some great clues are dropped, but I like that kind of information upfront. :D
Very interesting and not as disjointed as book one. There is a good reason for the disjointed part of book one.

This was a little outside of my normal genre but I enjoyed the book.
I found it a little slow to start but once I got into it I just needed to finish it.
The world building is great and the characters while unusual are none the less believable.
St. Augustina the main character starts the book as the new constable of the Magic Guild Guard. It's not a great start to her new job as all the staff bar one quit in protest on her first day.
The community she is working in don't know what to think about her and she initially struggles to win them over.
Just to make things interesting she has a vampire murder to solve and the main suspect used to work for the Magic Guild Guard.

This was a strong continuation in the Saint code series, it uses that element that I was hoping for and was engaged with the characters. It uses the world to its advantage and I enjoy the way Megan Mackie writes this type of book and characters. It left me wanting to read more in this series and from Megan Mackie.

deadly and dangerous dealings
who would have thought that being a Constable might be trickier than spying?
lives are still on the line. Yet many who should have her back decamp or simply find myriad other ways to not show support
but perhaps things are more dire than those folks recognize
battling on , for lives and more

Brilliant read that I could not put down. Loads of amazing characters and detailed world building. The story flows really smoothly with lots of action. Definitely worth looking at, but you won't put it back down til it's finished. Five stars
