Max's Campervan Case Files #13

Death Slides and Cheese Pies

Rate this book
Who Knew Cheese Pies Could be so Deadly?
What could be more fun for an ex-chef and vanlifer than a festival combining pies and vans? Not much, apart from being joined by your ex-wife and best friend besides Anxious, the smartest Jack Russell known to man.

Max Effort was in his element. The sun was shining, the food was delicious, and the campervan show was a real success. The death slide was, as its name suggested, terrifying.

Max would do anything for Min, though, so took the plunge, literally, and shot down the slide into the lake, surprised and quite pleased to survive. But this was only the beginning of his brush with death.

No sooner had they dried off than a corpse was discovered under Vee, his beloved VW Campervan. Hurrying to get help, events spiralled as a pie vendor was found dead, face-planted into his own pie. That was just the beginning of a truly surreal day having to deal with utterly inept detectives, giant pie competitions, and more cheese pies than even Anxious could consume.

As more bodies dropped, and the list of suspects grew, the gang uncovered clues that nobody seemed to take seriously but them.

How did the pie makers meet such an untimely and undignified demise? Why on earth would somebody try to sneak into the festival under their campervan? Most concerning of all was who would be next?

For the first time in his life, even Anxious lost his appetite.

Contains a stunning one-pot recipe at the end. Perfect for those on the road, or anyone who wants a great meal without all the washing up!

A journey of freedom, friendship, and murder mystery on the open road.

Death Slides and Cheese Pies is a whip-smart, flavour-packed cozy mystery. Readers craving cozy domestic scenes (and don’t mind a dash of the macabre) will find themselves fully immersed. I’d absolutely pick this up again—ideally with a slice of pie in hand.

Once again, a lot of pointless monologuing from the main character. Why did he spend several pages going on and on about the tragedy of how he and his ex-future wife weren't able to have kids, summarily dismissing adoption at the outset, and then just drop the subject? If it's pertinent to the plot, keep the monologue. If it's just supposed to be character development, cut it to a few sentences and move on. If this leads to a plot point in a later book where the couple actually do adopt a kid, preferably an older one, then I take back my criticism. Unless and until that happens, merely mentioning that they briefly considered it is just so much virtue signaling in a series where that already seems to be the main character's primary personality trait.

Not bad. The idea of the narrator encountering multiple murders at every campsite he attends is a tad far fetched but probably no less believable than a small area of central England named Midsomer being home to mass murder and mass murderers!
Aside from the unlikely names of our hero, heroine and pet dog their whole marital set up seems grossly unlikely but serves to provide some entertainment.
This is apparently the ante penultimate with two books to go before the series ends. I guess I’m hoping for a happy ending between Max and Min.

Max, Min and Anxious are at it again, working to solve another murder. This could be a tough one. A couple of lazy detectives not wanting to do the work, lots of pies, plenty of suspects and that Death Slide! How will Max, Min and Anxious manage to solve this one? If you want a story that's fun and easy to read, grab yourself a copy of Death Slides and Cheese Pies.

Be prepared to be hungry while you're reading! Max's culinary one pots are taking a back seat to some apparently lethal pies.
Max, Min and Anxious take on another case full of suspects and a very unhelpful detective. And watch out for that slide!

another great book

Another great book which I’ve really enjoyed. I love the life Max is living and believe so many people live the same way, well not exactly the same lol.
