“The thought of you dating another man makes me want to punch through a wall. You’re magnetic.”
I signed up for the new Bone-R app for monster dating thinking I’d get a fun one-night-stand out of the deal.
Instead, I’m now stranded at the hot kraken’s house at Christmas because of a massive snow storm, and what started as a very hot hookup (who knew tentacles were so…flexible?!) now feels like so much more.
But surely it’s too early to be talking about serious things like family and forever, isn’t it?
Stranded with the Kraken is a long novella with a human heroine and a kraken shifter hero who fall for each other hard and fast. You’ll love it if you enjoy monster romance stories with low angst, happy endings, and tentacle play.
This is only the second book by this author that I’ve read. I can say that if I want hot monster love she will be my go to. The story hooked me from page one when the two MC’s meet on a dating app named Bone-R. It was the most realistic story meet up I’ve seen in a very long time in an instalove romance. This is because they got a introduction before this meet up so the love wasn’t so instant it was a build up.
It is extremely easy to meet someone online and start to like them enough to link up for a casual no strings attached hookup. It is also very easy to decide in that same breath that maybe that they don’t really look like their profile or you’re not that into them.
For Arielle and Jasper the connection all though a bit awkward in the beginning turned into a full blown inferno. The passion and the bond they built was not superficial and not just fueled by the action they had in the sheets. These two were also able to express themselves comfortably which is also super hard to do unless you have a great bond.
The story also hints at what is to come in this series down the line and the peak we received I am more than ready to partake in. This was well written, spicy and had good laugh out loud moments. This made my Saturday night a lot more interesting and for that I am grateful.
Happy reading everyone !
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Cute palette cleanser with a quick burn, monstery goodness (including tentacles and other different anatomy), and insta-love that still felt like they were being vulnerable and connecting with each other. This has a fated mates feel, but I'm still not sure if it actually was or not. Arielle (h) meets Jasper (H) for a one night stand after talking on an app and there's immediately something different happening between them, including Arielle triggering a heat for Jasper. I really liked that Jasper had hang-ups after he'd scared off women before and how open and accepting Arielle was, though she was also rightfully hesitant. Some background is given for each but this is just fluffy monster romance. The pacing of this one is light speed since the plot is over a couple of days. Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and neither are virgins.
The steam and desire to be together forever both take off fast and there's even a bit of breeding kink. I did appreciate that Arielle has a moment where she tells Jasper that he's over here with what he's thinking about while she's not that far along, it injected just a tiny bit of realism. There's also an almost primal play feel to a couple scenes, but they didn't quite hit that spot for me personally, though they were fun. The entire story is just Arielle and Jasper except for one scene with a friend of Jasper's popping in, who's going to be one of the main characters in the next book. The epilogue is a year later with Arielle and Jasper happily married and very adorable. I enjoyed their romance and hit some notes for me that other monster insta-love novellas have been missing recently. Might be another case of right book, right time, but I'm glad I picked this up when I did and I'll consider others in the series too.
Both of these MCs were full of insecurities, which made sense given the broad strokes of their dating histories. But really, who isn’t a little insecure in between partners? It was fun reading about our main girl discovering the joys of tentacles. Tentacles means air tight without needing more than one partner, which YES PLEASE. The primal play was also fun. I was sad that there was very little background on either MC, or an explanation about why she was spending Christmas alone. Adding a few more pages of getting to know each other would have gone a long way.
ALL the steam. ALL the tentacles. ALL the instalove and no angst.
Honestly, just a super sweet and steamy monster romance read that I think Zoe does a really good job with in general. If you’re in need of a unique and quick read with plenty of romance, this is your book!
~Jasper just wanted someone who wouldn’t run from him in fear. He’s tired of being alone. Arielle was only meant to be a hookup but she turns out to be his everything. Will she want more?~
I love how genuine and open they are with each other. Their chemistry is freaking explosive 🔥 Will definitely be reading this again soon!
This was exactly what I needed! Such a sweet yet sexy read. It is almost instalove on Jasper’s part as he feels she is his mate, but I really like how Arielle tries to take a step back to rationalize their feelings.
This book was perfect for what it was meant to be. It was a surprisingly sweet book about a human who goes to the Krakens house to hook up from a hookup app and gets snowed in with him.
It was well written and a sweet, spicy, and fun short story!
I wanted to like STRANDED WITH THE KRAKEN more but it just wasn't capturing my attention. I don't mind tentacles and it was a cute set up but I was bored. I usually like this author so it's probably just me.
This was very cute, something nice and short to listen to while stuck in bed sick. Never read anything to do with tentacles before, that was definitely a trip. Not sure how I feel about it but diving into it with a book written by this author was probably my best bet lol
I want to enjoy m/f stuff, but so much of it is focused around relentless abstract cliches of Men and Women (even in a story with an octomerman) instead of actually treating the characters as individual characters. There's instalove because it's a mate bond and his attraction is all about wanting to breed her and put his baby inside her (NOT my cup of tea 😬), and ooh it's his manly monster instinct to be dominant and ooh it's her womanly desire to be submissive, and of course being penetrated with his dick is somehow more pleasurable and intimate than being penetrated with his tentacles because we've simply GOT to make penis in vagina sex the pinnacle of romance even in a story with a tentacle monster guy. Idk, it's just disappointing. Could we get some real chemistry between individuals instead of this kind of cheap shortcut based on 'oooh we have to mate for babies'?
Anyway, to each their own, and if mate bonds and breeding kink are you thing then this delivers.
Where do I even begin? Zoe Ahswood has crafted an utterly delightful mix of adorable awkwardness, swoon-worthy passion, and enough tentacled spice to make you giggle and blush in equal measure.
Let’s talk about Arielle and Jasper. Their connection starts out in that hilariously clunky “how do I even talk to you” way—because, let’s face it, blind-dating a kraken isn’t in anyone’s guide to modern dating. But once they break through that barrier? Absolute fireworks. Their chemistry is explosive, but what really makes this story shine is the depth of their bond (yeah, I know how that sounds). It’s not just about the electric sparks flying in the pool; it’s about two people (err, beings?) learning to communicate, trust, and be vulnerable with one another.
And the tentacles? Oh, the tentacles. Let’s just say they mean business. Ahswood somehow walks the perfect line between playful kink and genuine connection, which is no small feat when your leading man has extra appendages.
The writing is witty, sharp, and just the right amount of snarky to keep you smiling. Arielle is utterly relatable, handling her wild circumstances with humour and resilience. And Jasper? Let’s just say this kraken has ruined me for regular book boyfriends. He’s intense, tender, and unexpectedly sweet—a true catch in every sense of the word.
In short, this book is a wild, weirdly adorable ride. It’s a love story that shouldn’t work on paper, but it absolutely does—and that’s what makes it so magical. If you’re ready to swoon over a kraken and question all your literary life choices, Stranded with the Kraken is your next must-read.
Arielle, the female human lead, signed for a one night stand with a monster but she’s shocked by how urbane Jasper is when she meets him. Jasper, the male kraken lead, has had humans run in terror when he’s revealed himself to them in the past and he’s very anxious about Arielle’s reaction. But there’s an immediate, deep, and intense feeling between them, and Jasper is sure she’s his mate… now he’ll just have to convince her…
This novella is dual POV, well written and edited, and the super steamy, erotic romance that opens a new series for this author. I adored the intensity of the interactions between Arielle and Jasper, as well as the playful banter they engaged in. I understood Arielle’s concern about going too deep too fast since she only signed up for one night. I empathised with Jasper’s fears regarding her willingness to be with him at all, let alone long term. I enjoyed the highly erotic intimate scenes that were the initial basis of the relationship, though I appreciated that the characters made efforts to actually build an outside the bedroom relationship. I’m looking forward to more in this setting!
I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
“Will you break my heart?” He cups my face with both palms and brings my chin up. Our gazes meet, and then he presses a tender kiss to my lips. “No, sweetheart. You’re safe with me.”
This book was cover to cover smut, but it was very, very sweet smut. Insta-love but plenty of insecurities to work through before it gets too too serious which I appreciate. I also liked that the FMC has a moment of “wtf am I doing, this guy is a monster and he seems scared to even let me know what kind it is, what if this is a terrible idea” which makes her so much more realistic in my mind even if it was brief and she was being stuffed my tentacles in the same chapter lmao.
It did a feel a little rushed/vague beyond smexy times, there were a lot of missing details in the worldbuilding and even the MMCs answers to some of the FMCs questions were infuriatingly vague. But honestly it was a good “turn your brain off and enjoy the ride” read and the smut was really well written. And I’m a sucker for chase scenes and we get two!
"Will you break my heart?" He cups my face with both palms and brings my chin up. "No, sweetheart. You're safe with me."
4.25 stars!
This was my first kraken romance, and holy hell did Zoe Ashwood unlock a new kink! I loved how vulnerable both Jasper and Arielle were about wanting a lasting connection, and I felt that both of their reactions were realistic in their hopeful hesitations. However, the chemistry between them was off the freaking charts, so readers make sure you have a glass of water (or wine) close by. Zoe always delivers with the steam and heart, and this holiday novella did not disappoint🖤
4.5 stars round up to 5. This was spicy as heck and I loved every minute of it. Quick read with a happy ending just what I needed as a palate cleanser 💕💕 jasper is hit asf
Great insta love, fates mates, monster read. Sweet novella for a palate cleanser or just an afternoon short read. Made me smile. Will read more by this author.
If only real life Christmases could be this good! Arielle and Jasper’s story is full of sweet romance, insta-loving and an abundance spicy goodness. Zoe Ashwood knows how to write a good steamy paranormal romance that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Stranded with the Kraken is an awesome little Christmas read with all the romantic trimmings.

I just upgraded to 5 stars, recognizing how perfectly this book captures the deliciousness of having a Kraken lover.
Don’t expect angst. The story is cozy in the sense that there’s no evil person lurking nearby to threaten violence, and there’s no third-act breakup. The story is just how 2 vulnerable strangers meet and have intense chemistry right off the bat. It’s sweet and so sexy.
If you’re wondering what other 2 kraken stories I rate this high are, they are (no. 1) Guarded by the Kraken by Cassie Alexander, and (no. 2) Stalked by the Kraken by Lillian Lark.
This was, for the most part, a fun monster romance - except I was absolutely baffled by some parts of it. Mainly that Arielle signs up and matches with a monster on a monster-dating app, specifically because she wants to fuck a monster, just to then be surprised and nervous when the man she matched with turns out to be a monster???
And not even a particularly out-there monster. Maybe that's my personal bias showing, but I don't find kraken to be all that out-there. It's just a big octopus?? And 99% of the time when she interacts with Jasper he is just a merman with tentacles, meaning with a completely human upper torso. But she keeps referring to how mythological and out-of-folklore him being a kraken is, when, again she absolutely knew what she was signing up for. Even if she did not inititally know what kind of monster he was, she filled out a questionnaire that included what her hard limits etc. are.
Nevertheless, the consent negotiation throughout the entire book was quite lovely, as was the management of expectations. Unfortunately, even that was overshadowed by the insta-love/mating thing from Jasper's POV, which was... well, let's just say it made me cringe a lot. But what was even worse was that for SOME reason Arielle seems to just... sort of go along with it?? Like, he mentions obsessing about her getting pregnant due to the whole mate thing, and she INSTANTLY and genuinely considers stopping her birth control??? I'm sorry??? After not even 24 hours??
It all just went a bit too fast for me, even though, to be fair, the two of them mostly stay rational throughout. There wasn't a lot of worldbuilding, and I wish the little there was had been a bit more clear.
To get back to the monster-dating app setup: I liked the base idea of it, but it almost seemed like the author only slapped that on at the end without thinking it through. There's the whole Arielle surprised about Jasper being a monster despite that being what she went on the monster-dating app for. Another thing is that the book mentions multiple times that Arielle and Jasper were chatting on the app for a while, after they matched, figured out they had a lot in common, and set up their date. But then when they meet it's like they never talked at all? It was very strange.
Overall still pretty enjoyable to read, after all, the main point of the book is the monster fucking, and that is done pretty well. Just wish the rest had been more consistent.
This is a perfect holiday monster romance that carries just enough festive cheer to get you in the holiday mood while not being strictly a holiday romance. It’s filled with all the steamy spice, kinky smut (with lots of tentacles, cockpockets and excessive amounts of cum) and surprisingly sweet wholesomeness that is the perfect combination for a delightful novella!
Considering it was on the shorter side, and able to be finished in a single sitting, the plot was decent and helped to break up all the spicy moments, and there were a LOT of them. All of them hot and wet…pun very much intended. If you like tentacles, then you won’t be disappointed here as they are used in many creative ways when Jasper is in his kraken half-form.
Both the characters were sweet, slightly insecure but trying their best, and I found them both equally enjoyable to discover more about. I would actually love to read more about these two in the future if Ashwood ever decides to delve back into their relationship.
There are a few triggers that I’ll mention below, but on the whole there isn’t many trigger/content warnings in this book as it’s quite light and fun without any darker elements.

⚔️TRIGGER LIST⚔️ — Explicit sex scenes — Monster sex scenes (kraken & human) — Tentacle play — Pregnancy (epilogue) — Chasing scenes (teasing predator/prey) — Mentions of breeding, children and birth control — Unprotected sex (FMC is on birth control for the descriptive sex scenes)

“Stranded with the Kraken” is a great shorter read that’s got everything you could ask for for some tentacle spicy goodness; tentacles that he knows how to use, cockpockets, excessive cum while sprinkling in some sweet fated mates insta-love, holiday festivities and humour. I would highly recommend this book for a light, fun read and it would be perfect for both monster romance lovers and newbies to the genre. 5/5 stars!
