I have to start this by saying that I am hit or miss with short stories. The reason why is because I never feel like I get enough of the story to fill my curiosity. That being said, I did enjoy the premise of this book and it definitely has captured my interest. I am curious to read more about Shade and the new world.

I am a huge fan of Alexandra Lanc, especially her Clara Claus series.

I will definitely continue on with the series and I'm sure it will be enjoyable once there is more substance to the book itself.

For the reasons above, I am giving the book 3.75 stars but rating it 4 stars.

I received a copy of this book for honest review. 'Break' is the beginning of the story of assassin Shade.

I found this story instantly absorbing. The sense of hopelessness in this dystopian world is established right away and I was hooked by the main character, intrigued and wanting to know more about him and his kind and their abilities. I really didn't want the story to end and I was surprised at how quickly it finished.

Overall this is a very intriguing and atmospheric beginning to what looks to be a unique and exciting series. I really liked where the story was going and very much look forward to the next part. Highly recommended for fans of sci-fi and dystopia.

I really enjoy reading short stories, get to know new places and characters in just a few pages.

With Break the author accomplish to present a very interesting universe that I hope we get to explore further in the upcoming shorts. There's also this main character who is basically emotionless who can turn out to be a really good, interesting deep character or could easily fall into being boring and plain.

We'll have to wait and see how Sterling handles this.
