When Cheryl's big brother sacrifices his life in front of her eyes, only for his soul to get attached to her, she makes the decision to leave NYC behind and move to a quiet town named Creekdale.
Navigating through every day, with questions about her own sanity, Cheryl struggles to keep it all together. But Ace, the neighbour from across the hall is hell-bent on hunting her. Being the leader of his Viper's clan, he has to set her as a example, even if every fiber of his being is fighting against his narrow minded principles.
Unfortunately Cheryl is far from a quiet life as she planned -with a big brother that doesn't stop talking, secret bloodlines and a love as old as time - her life has turned for the worse since she took her cat and her backpack and came to this town.

"Don't fall in love with me, if you can promise me that, I'm all in, beautiful."
A moment of silence fell upon them, and Ace thought that she will finally release him, from this siren's song. But the her fangs burst through her canines and she smiled, licking her lips.

Don't let him stop! He is ours for all eternity... The words ranged in her head like a mantra and she was willing to do anything for him to stay here with her, in this moment.
" I promise..." She lied, looking Ace in the eyes. It was already too late for her.

Check your trigger warnings!

Opens up by introducing you to Cheryl Blackend, giving you the impression she’s a bit of a recluse. Not only that but you find out her dead brother is talking to her, kind of like he’s by her side, in her ear, protecting her.

I really like Cheryl’s character, I could relate to her in some ways, her complexity, her air of strength even though she felt inside like she was losing it, her past. She felt healing for me.

Then in comes Ace, a hunter & the leader of The Viper Clan. He can see the magic surrounding witches but Cheryl only makes him more curious, she is surrounded by red… not black or white.

The twists & turns are interesting additions to the other elements in the story, like the family secrets, hidden supernatural powers, demons.
Gives that feeling that feeling of dark romantasy, filled with fantasy creatures, shifters & witches. It transported me into a supernatural world dragging me deeper into the story.

Written in third person but gives a feeling of a POV in each chapter, enemies to lovers but completely fated mates vibes. Pet cameos, giving almost a witchy familiar feel rather than pets. Really easy read, loved the size of the font & the way it was printed - might seem trivial to some people but for me that’s always important.

From the perspective of someone who is venturing into the author world, I quite enjoyed some of the language used, the similes, the way it was written. It was kind of poetic in some ways.
E.g. ‘calling to her, like a siren’ or ‘anxiety, like an unwanted guest, made itself at home’
& even though there are a few mistakes within it, I didn’t mind. It didn’t take away from the story & just gave me that feeling that this was a book written with passion.

I think it has so so much potential, the concept & story are fascinating. There’s a vast world building in it that could really be explored more if Lyssa wanted too, she’s approached it in a clever way where she’s could create a ‘verse’ type vibes with interlinked series.

Thank you so much! Really enjoyed it!

3.5 ☆ Please check your trigger warnings:
attempted rape, depression, onscreen rape, offscreen rape, self-harm, sexual assault abuse, stalker, suicide, torture, explicit imagery.

Loving Your Enemy is a dark shifter romance. We are introduced to Cheryl, who after witnessing her estranged brother's suicide, has moved to this small town in an attempt to escape a dark past. She hides herself away in her apartment trying to not be found. The only problem is that his soul has attached himself to her.

I was drawn into the story right away. There is mystery in the town of shifters and witches. There mystery surrounding who and what Cheryl is. There is an attraction between Ace and Cheryl that neither can explain and neither of them want to pursue. As it all behind to unfold and secrets begin to be revealed, it all explodes. This explosion, for me, became overwhelming. So many questions, characters, and histories hitting me at once. I'm a mood reader and probably will need to revisit this in the future.

This book was so cool. I loved the snake shifter idea. I’ve never read one with those shifters before. It was awesome seeing so many different shifters witches. The world building was excellent. Everything came together really well, and I loved the description. It played out be beautifully in my mind. And speaking of minds, absolutely loved Dante lol. He was great. The twists and turns in this were wild and they kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. This was captivating and very well written. It definitely had me engrossed and turning the pages. Absolutely loved reading this story.

3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ & 2 🌶️🌶️. I struggled to get through a handful of moments in this, but it is worth pushing on. The magical and shifter elements were very unique and I enjoyed the way the story evolved.

There was near constant little twists that I genuinely didn’t see coming, which is a feat in itself because I tend to predict most plots.

The story was engaging enough to follow however I do wish some elements of introducing all the species was slowed down a little and more detail added. It almost felt as if some elements of different fantasy or paranormal lore with different rules were smashed together (E.g shifters, witches, vampires etc) and I felt like I had to keep up with the way in which the author wanted this to appear for this book and the rules of their magic and limitations. If that makes any sense at all. I think it would have been cool to have been introduced to each faction at a time and learned their rules first instead of in the middle of multiple species action scenes for example. I felt like their abilities got more wild without much of an explanation of where it all came from.

I also got a little confused about the heritage of each character. Like half demon or half this or that. Genuinely would like a family tree diagram for this Lott 🤣 I also didn’t vibe with some of the spicy scenes the best. They were missing something. And the anatomy mentioned in the final spice scene was all over the place and needs some work.

There were a lot of spelling mistakes in this and minor sentence structure issues (I recorded over 50 with m highlights), so it could do with a good edit or re proofing. This contributes to my rating as I found myself having to pause to understand some of what was wanting to be said. It was odd, as there would be large chunks of good writing and perfect spelling etc but certain chapters were worse than others. I understand the authors first language is not English so this could have an element to this and just needs a bit more work.

The ending felt a little rushed and there were some odd bits I didn’t quite understand, linked to the same comments above. There was a good opening for the next book, but I don’t think I will continue this series unless there would be improvements.

Other than this I really enjoyed the pacing of the constant little twists that kept me engaged and the overall story itself. It was a different shifter read for sure!

This book was kindly sent to me in advance from the author and the wings & words community for the opportunity to review which I am leaving voluntarily and honestly.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed Loving Your Enemy! The story grabbed me right away with Cheryl’s loss and the paranormal twist of her brother’s soul still being with her. It’s dark, emotional, and had me wanting to know what would happen next at all times!

Being a dark romance girlie ace had my heart even though he was rude and obnoxious but the spice oh the spice was hoooottttt!

The mix of fantasy, gods, demons, and the enemies-to-lovers angle made it super addictive. Some slight editing in parts would be beneficial but overall I couldn’t stop reading and to me it was not a problem as the storyline and characters made up for it!!!

If you like dark romance with fantasy vibes and morally grey characters, this one’s definitely worth checking out.

Highly highly recommend and I can not wait for book 2!!!

I give it 3.5 ⭐️

The book started off really strong for me, and I was quickly interested. The story follows Cheryl after her brother sacrifices his life for her, and his soul becomes bound to her. She can see him. At the same time, there are secrets about who she is, what she is, and her family, set in a world with shifters, witches, vampires, and demons. The relationship between Cheryl and Ace develops through conflict and attraction. Unfortunately, after a while it became quite messy for me to follow. There were many characters and a lot going on, and I lost some of the flow. That could definitely be because I was tired when I was reading. So read it and make up your own mind about it. Best experienced by reading it yourself.

This review is voluntary.

This book was very in depth and you really had to focus to remember all points. I really did enjoy the story line and there were so many plot twists that shocked me a lot. I will say, this book does need a final edit but overall I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and will definitely be reading book 2. This is a long book and there is a lot of information to absorb but it's so worth it!
