Jerks and Caicos: A Suspenseful Romance

Rate this book
When vacation mode turns to survival mode.

Being a successful real estate agent is rewarding. I get to help change people's lives and have fun by bolstering my business on social media. It can also be draining. Especially when I have only myself to blame for my go-go-go work ethic. Well, maybe I can blame my dad. He didn't get to be a well-respected judge by playing it safe and taking time off. But maybe all I need is a vacation.

During a lunch date with my father, he doesn't suggest taking some deserved R&R, he TELLS me he's sending me to Turks and Caicos. An all expenses paid vacation, fortuitously timed. But he also doesn't give me much choice in the matter. I may be fiercely independent--and in my thirties, mind you--but arguing against Judge Penbrook is a lost cause. I know from experience. So, I decide there isn't any harm in going.

It'll be the perfect opportunity to show my followers that working hard pays off. I post my time in the airport, glimpses of the teal waters when I land, and I pose outside the resort I'm staying at for two weeks.

Getting settled takes zero time. But just when I'm about to answer the door for my room service (a girl needs margaritas and a quesadilla after flying), I'm met with an imposing and impossibly attractive man who claims to be hired by my dad. "Phantom" is to be my new bodyguard, for reasons I haven't been informed of.

He weasels his way inside and starts telling me how the duration of MY vacation is going to go. Yeah, that's not going work. I have a rigid schedule of tanning, napping, light work, and eating my way through the island--none of which can be achieved with a babysitter hovering over my shoulder. But when Phantom informs me of the looming danger, I give in to his presence. Nothing bad can happen to me while vacationing somewhere tropical, right?

How wrong I am.

I do need someone who is skilled in protection, and as much as I hate to admit it, Phantom's military background has me feeling better, despite the bullets flying at us. If being forced to flee my idyllic vacation isn't bad enough, I'm now on the run with a bodyguard who is quickly turning into everything I never knew I needed. Or wanted.

Even if his stupidly handsome face and bulging arms irritate me. But with each mile we put behind us, those features--and others--become more and more distracting.

How did my jerk of a babysitter turn into someone I might...love?

Thank you to Luna Literary and author Piper Collins for the opportunity to read this ARC 💕

When I read the blurb, I had a feeling this was going to be right up my alley, and my feeling was correct! I loved both of the main characters and the chemistry they had together. Fowler is my type of MMC in almost every way. And the side characters are just as loveable as the main characters too!

The book had a fantastic mix of comedy, spice, action, and suspense, and I couldn't put it down. Special shoutout to the Ren Faire chapter that had me laughing like crazy. This is a definite pre-order for me!

Piper Collins’s books read like the best action-packed movies, but 100% better because they’re romance novels.
When Dani’s dad sends her on a relaxing vacation to Turks & Caicos, she knows there’s something sus about it. But she’s so desperately in need of relief from the rat race, she leans in to the experience and tries to make the most of it. Maybe too most, because when she unwittingly shares her location on social media, that sets off her dad’s alarm bells, and now Dani’s stuck with Phantom, the hot former Marine sniper, now bodyguard who takes his job way too seriously… until she realizes there are baddies on the trail and he has good reason to take charge of her peaceful island trip.
What ensues is a blend of heart-pumping action and a little suspense that’s written so pristinely, you feel like you can’t take a breath–but that’s okay because you’ll devour this book so fast, you won’t need to.
If you like fast-paced reads with lots of chemistry and humor, Piper sets the bar sky high this this one!

A vacation gone awry, ending in an unexpected trip with a hot bodyguard and enemies hot on their heels 🫣🔥

⭐ Rating Criteria ⭐

❤️ Plot:

The balance between the romance and the action in this was great!

The action showed up sometime around the 50% mark, and I loved that it started at that point because I was craving the thrill. From there, things just kept getting better and better, and the romance also started developing more and more.

I loved how the build-up of the plot was on an upward trajectory for this whole book. Its momentum is definitely very appreciated because there was not a dull or boring chapter in sight once the adventure and action picked up.

❤️ Characters:

I ADORED the found family in this! I absolutely cracked up when Blaze came into the picture, but even more when we got to meet their whole family. Those chapters might just be my favorites in this book because of how crazy and heartwarming Blaze, Legion, and their parents were 🥰

As for our main characters, it took a bit of time to warm up to Dani, but I was an immediate sucker for Fowler - I mean who wouldn’t like a hot bodyguard? 🔥

For Dani, while I understood her thoughts about the situation she was unknowingly put into, I also did not understand how she cared more about her vacation than her safety - evident during the first few chapters when they were still on the island. If I were in her shoes, and I was immediately alerted about my dad’s enemies coming for me, I’d never let Fowler away from my sight for fear of my life. It boggles my mind how she didn’t realize the gravity of the situation for a while there, and I would be lying if I said it wasn't a bit annoying.

❤️ Overall:

Reading this just solidified my growing preference for romantic suspense books 😍 All the action scenes in this book were so engaging and enjoyble to read - it was literally a rollercoaster ride! Once the ball started rolling, it went on nonstop and I was living for it 🤩

This was honestly so amazing. I will definitely be reading the first book, and will be on the look out for the next books to come.

Thank you very much to the author, Piper Collins and Luna Literary Management for allowing me to share my honest review of this ARC ❤️

Jerks and Caicos is the second book in Piper Collins' Chrysus Defense series. In the first book, To Columbia, With Love, we went on a trek around the globe as the Chrysus Defense team attempted to locate and ancient artifact and a kidnapped father. But in this book, we focus more on team member Phantom as he joins real estate agent Dani on her Turks and Caicos vacation to protect her from retribution. After her father, a prominent Seattle judge, puts away a dangerous and corrupt man, he sends her away on vacation, not telling her about the danger until Phantom shows up at her door instead of the margarita she ordered. What's supposed to be two weeks in paradise watching tropical sunsets quickly turns into escaping back to the States to start the world's worst road trip from Miami to Wyoming.

This book started off slow, the action not really picking up until about the halfway point. But after that, things didn't really slow down until the very end. While Midas and Archer made small appearances and Blaze and Legion eventually join the fun, this job, and therefore book, was not as much of a team effort like the first was. This gave the readers the opportunity to really get to know Phantom and Dani and experience them slowly fall in love as they let go of past hurts and mistakes. The slower pace of the beginning allowed the pair the chance to connect over more than just their situation and open up to each other.

Blaze once again steals the show with his golden retriever personality and expertise as a medic. Add in his brother Legion and their ridiculously adorable and badass parents Jack and Diane, and you have a fun, quirky, entertaining group of characters that you 100% believe would keep you safe if you were being chased by a vengeful brother with seemingly endless resources. The danger feels real and the action believable as the group takes on the bad guys at gas stations, renaissance faires, and family compounds.

I really enjoyed the team taking on a different kind of case and while I missed Archer and Midas, their absence felt realistic to the story. It was great seeing Mia again and I hope to see her, Jack, Diane, and Dani in future books. If action adventure romcoms with happily ever afters are your jam, then I definitely recommend you check this one out!

This was my first book by Piper Collins, and I wasn't sure what to expect. I liked the summary, and something about the cover just pulled me in. I'm so glad I decided to read it! Collins had me chuckling on the metro during my commute, and if I looked a little crazy, I didn’t care—I was too busy enjoying a great book.

The story starts off a bit slow as Dani and Fowler (aka Phantom) get to know each other. And by "getting to know each other," I mean barely scratching the surface. Fowler, a reserved retired Marine now working for a private security agency, isn't exactly forthcoming about personal details. Meanwhile, Dani, a successful real estate agent, is his complete opposite—bubbly, social, and full of life.

Dani’s father sends her on what seems like a dream vacation, supposedly because she’s been working too hard. What he doesn’t mention is that she might be in danger due to fallout from a case he just finished judging. Getting her out of the country and under protection is his real motive. Fowler is the one tasked with delivering this bombshell news—right after crashing her vacation within the first few hours.

As the danger escalates, the two find themselves constantly on the move, running, hiding, and fighting to stay alive. Amidst all the chaos, their relationship shifts from strictly professional to something much more personal.

I loved this story and the constant feeling of being on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next. Even in the most dangerous moments, Piper Collins managed to weave in humor, which made the book even more enjoyable. All in all, I absolutely loved Jerks and Caicos and can honestly say that I now need to go back and read book one in the Chrysus Defense Series!

I so very much wanted to love this book. But when it takes me almost 2 months to finish, there’s something wrong.

Now here’s the thing though… I actually liked the characters. And the general plot of the story was cute. But there was just *something* about it that didn’t hook me and keep me interested. I think me not having a kindle to read it on was part of the problem, because I got a kindle two weeks ago and that made it a whole lot easier to read after that. BUT! Still… I think having a husband who is ex-military has ruined me for stories like this, because all I could imagine was my husband criticizing the military-like operations throughout the book, and none of it seemed realistic. Especially because I didn’t feel like we were given a bad enough bad guy. There wasn’t much of the back story given as to why she was being tracked by him, not to mention, how they kept finding her even after her phone was taken… like, how? There was also a quick scene in a renaissance festival that was too fast and could have been so much funnier. I was actually grumpy she didn’t get a giant turkey leg! 🍗 There was so much potential in this book for it to be great, but just missed the mark 🎯

I honestly can’t explain what it is about this book I didn’t like, but overall I kind of did like it. Is that weird? Can you understand that? Probably not. But I finally finished it, and that’s saying something.

If you love suspenseful romance packed with action, adventure, humor, and sizzling chemistry — this one’s for you! Though it’s the second book in the series, it reads perfectly as a standalone.

🩵 “It can be an ‘I’ll see you later,’ goodbyes are awfully permanent.” 🩵

Dani is a hilarious, reluctant-to-be-protected heroine, while Fowler (aka Phantom) is the grumpy, all-business protector who can’t help but fall for her. Their banter is top-tier — I laughed out loud so many times — and their chemistry? 🔥 Off the charts. The plot? Fast-paced with a dash of spice!

🩵 “I do believe it is only fair that you answer a question before you continue – hopefully – with your stay.”
“Is Die Hard a Christmas movie, or simply an action film?” 🩵

The one bed (on an island!), forced proximity, and "take a bullet for you" vibes, this book felt like a thrilling, spicy vacation I didn’t want to end.

This is the third book that I have gotten the pleasure of ARC reading for Piper!

I cannot say enough about how amazing this series is! Since the first book of the series, I have yet to find a book with anywhere close to the amount of adventure and action in a romance (comedy too) book! It is like watching your husband’s favorite action movie with romance, comedy and spicy spice! 🔥🔥

She has created her own genre with this series. I am going to call it Action Adventure RomCom.

The banter of the characters is just perfection.

Be prepared to not only fall in love with the characters, but also hold your breath with each page you turn. And the action doesn’t stop until the end!!

I cannot wait for the rest of the series! I want to keep reading about these hunky retired military bodyguard men meet their match and fall in love!

This is the second book in A Chrysus Defense Series. I thought the first one was good - this one was even better! 😍
In this book, we get a totally different angle of how the team works and a closer look at other characters.
I love how with each book, we get to know more about different characters - more is being unravelled as we go 😃

One thing this author does really well, is research and it’s evident in her writing! When she tells a story, she researches what she’s writing about and goes into the kind of details that really enhances the whole book 👏 brings the action to life a lot more.

Blaze! Haha - so glad he showed up in this book! 🙃 what a guy!

Plenty of action throughout, romance, a few 🌶️ scenes, banter, humour and great story writing.

This received this free as an ARC and I left this review voluntarily.

Second ARC of 2025, man oh man I can’t even put into words how much I enjoyed this book. Although the book started off on a slower pace; halfway through when it picked up, I WAS GLUED.
I fell in love with Dani and phantom’s developing relationship. Between the awkward defensiveness to the protector when danger hit. This is the perfect combo of romance and action packed.

Tropes:
🩵enemies to lovers
🩵grumpy/sunshine
🩵witty banter
🩵alpha hero
🩵unexpected road trip

Imagine being booked an all expenses tropical trip for 2 weeks, only to have a surprise bodyguard tag along for your own safety (thanks dad). Vacation is going well when suddenly you are in the run. Good thing, your bodyguard ends up protecting and saving your life more than once.

Slow burn and action packed all in one book, SIGN ME UP!!!
Mark your calendars.you’re going to NEED to run to buy this!!

The book starts slow, letting Phantom (Fowler) and Dani meet and connect without the high stakes situation interfearing. But once the action starts, it doesn't stop!

I have not read the first book, but this mission was more personal, one on one, than what the blurb of the first one indicates. Meaning Phantom and Dani were pretty much the only ones involved. But Blaze and Leagion, and their parents, were highlights. So much fun even when action was going on.

I did find a bit annoying that Dani was so nonchalant about the bad guys coming for her. Like sure, a vacation seems nice, but the moment danger is mentioned, I'd take it more seriously than what she did.

But the action, the suspense, and the romance all rolled into this book were perfect, and I will definitely be reading more Piper Collins in the future!

If you like bodyguard romance, a fast-paced plot with a dash of spice on top, Jerks and Caicos is the book for you.

This suspenseful romance has it all: the grumpy all business protector, the reluctant-to-be-protected funny heroine, loads of action, one bed (island), and take a bullet (or two) for you tropes. Dani and Adrian have the sort of chemistry that will make you fan your face, and their banter is witty and fun.

I've never read any other Piper books, but I liked the writing style, so I think I might dip into her world more.

This is my favorite type of suspenseful romance. It is action-packed and a lot is happening, but the angst level is rather low, so the reader can follow the budding love between main characters and get immersed into the suspenseful world of the escape, ambush and all that Chrysus Defense has to offer.
Dani and Fowler/Phantom's journey starts at Turks and Caicos, but quickly turns into a trip across the US with some side characters joining in.
I really enjoyed it and now I'm looking forward the next installment in the series!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Thanks to Piper Collins and Luna Literary for this ARC.

Reading this book feels like you’ve been transported on vacation, but what feels like a normal beach read quickly develops into a steamy, action packed romantic adventure story between Dani, an overworked real estate agent and Fowler, the overprotective bodyguard Dani’s father *just* failed to mention he had hired for her on the vacation he booked for her.

Action packed chemistry is the name of the game between Dani and Fowler, as well as some great comedic bites from Fowler’s work buddies, Blaze and Legion. If you’re looking for an easy read, yet something that’s not a conventional romance, pick this book up.

Honestly this book could have been absolute garbage and it would have gotten a good review based on the title alone! Luckily it was extremely entertaining with action and a large side of romance! I loved everything about it. The characters were perfection and had the best banter. The dual point of view was especially fun because we got to hear all the romantic thoughts our uber masculine, Phantom was thinking! Dani was tough and didn’t let the situation get her down; she definitely knows how to handle a taser (iykyk). Also, Blaze’s parents are officially the coolest people ever! I’m jealous I don’t actually get to know them! This book would make one h*ll of a movie!! Any who go read it!!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is a fantastic read for anyone looking for comedy, action, spice, and a bit of suspense. It might be obvious from his job description, but Fowler is perfectly possessive and protective of Dani and it had me ✨feral✨ for him. The action kept me engaged in this book until the very end and the chemistry between Dani and Fowler made me devour this book. I highly recommend for anyone looking for a romcom with a bit of action thrown in! Thank you so much Luna Literary Management and Piper for the early copy!

The witty banter in this book had me cackling! I just could not stop with Dani and Fowler, or Phantom. It was a great action-packed read with lots of pining and desire mixed in! As her new bodyguard, one would think he could keep his feelings to himself. But, nope! Fowler was just a simp for Dani, right from the start! And he would literally give everything for his woman.
I read it as a standalone, which is totally good to do, and I would love to go back and read the first in the series!

Jerks and Caicos by Piper Collins was more than I expected it to be in a good way. I loved how the characters interacted with each other and how Piper is very detailed with the entire book. It kind of gave Selling Sunset meets Survivor.

Dani, a successful real estate agent with lots of followers, decides she needs a vacation and her father completely agrees and informs her that he is sending her to Turks and Caicos, all expenses paid! Fowler is her bodyguard that is hired to ensure her safety and oh does she need it!

I strongly recommend reading this great book!

4.5 ⭐️ this is the second book in the Chrysus Defense series. I loved the first book, but Dani and Fowler I like I just a little bit better!

Dani is sent to Caicos by her father who is a Judge who has just wrapped up a case and is now worried about her safety and he has hired Phantom (Fowler) to be her bodyguard while she is there and she is not happy about it.

This book is full of action, suspense, and drama mixed with some spice and some funny banter. i can not wait for the next book! <3

Jerks and Caicos, the second book in the Chrysus Defense Series, brings back all the familiar faces for another thrilling ride!

This time, the focus is on Dani, a highly successful realtor whose judge father insists she take a much-needed two-week Caribbean vacation. What he conveniently forgets to mention? He’s actually sending her away for her own safety after wrapping up a high-profile and dangerous court case.

Enter Phantom, her new bodyguard—and let’s just say Dani is not thrilled about it. Their dynamic starts off with serious enemies-to-lovers tension, but it doesn’t take long for her to realize just how much she needs him. The entire Midas team returns, joined by Blaze and Legion’s badass parents, adding even more depth to the story.

This book has it all—an exciting and suspenseful plot, incredible characters, a gorgeous setting, and of course, plenty of spicy moments. The series just keeps getting better!

This book was such a 10/10 read for me!!!

I loved Fowler and Dani together, this book was definitely a slow burn but you see the TENSION!!! It was at an all time high.
I have nothing much good words about this book , if you are seeking a book about a bodyguard who was all about his job until her met his “fireball” then this book is for you.

Grab it now and you will thank me later…I should also mention their is a “it will fit scene “ for all the people who go feral over this line 🤍✨

Lots of action, gun fights and fun scenes with Blaze (love Jack and Diane!!). Can't wait to see who steals Midas's heart in the next book!

Piper did another amazing job with this one! I loved the first, but loved this one just a bit more! I was so excited that it was Phantom this time.
