In My Arms You Shall Hide

Rate this book
There’s a thin line between love and obsession. Some people don’t know they’ve crossed it until it’s devoured them.

Kittie

The day I saved Dorian Ward’s life, I wasn’t thinking about the consequences. My feet moved, and I crashed right into him. And when he spent two weeks at my bedside, I couldn’t help but fall for him, even when I knew deep down that someone like him—affluent, handsome, charming—would never be with someone like me.

But it’s all just a facade. There’s a darkness beneath the surface that threatens to consume me. Now that Dorian’s taken me captive, I realize I never truly knew him, and I don’t know what he’s capable of. All I know is my devotion to the man I saved and an insatiable allure to the monster he’s unveiled himself to be.

Dorian

Katherine “Kittie” Starling came straight out of the blue. I thought I hated her for interfering with my life, but the moment she opened her eyes in that hospital room, I knew I had to have her. I tell myself that locking her away is all to keep her safe. But deep down, I know the truth.
She’s mine.

In My Arms You Shall Hide is a "dark" romance with themes and content that may be triggering or disturbing. Please check the trigger warnings inside the book before proceeding.

In My Arms You Shall Hide was such a stunning debut novel. From the very first page I was immediately hooked! I could tell from the beginning that I would love this one.

Gambit’s writing style keeps you captivated throughout the entire novel. I absolutely loved the dynamic between our two leads—Kitty and Dorian. From the beginning the characters intrigued me and I couldn’t wait to see where their story would go.

The whole time I was pretty engaged and just wanted to know more. Saying that, I wished that this novel was a bit more character based. Most of it revolves around the plot but I just found myself wanting a bit more depth from our main two mc’s. I also would’ve loved more insight and/or depth on the mental health aspects throughout the novel. There were some parts that I found to be pretty predictable and cliché but it didn’t fully take away my enjoyment of the book.

Overall I really enjoyed this debut and can’t wait to see how Gambit’s writing grows. And any other releases she has planned! I’d definitely recommend this one if you’re looking for a new indie dark romance read 🤍.

Thank you Carmen Gambit for providing me with an eARC. As always, all thoughts are my own and are in no way influenced by early access to this title.

Some of my Favorite Quotes:

‘Surely, it’s been a lifetime, hasn’t it? I’ve never felt anything as strong as my tether to her.’

‘What god, I wonder, as a mortal man, will I have to go against to ensure I keep her for all eternity?’

“If you’re lying to me, I’ll rip Heaven apart to find you,” he promises darkly, pressing his mouth to the base of my throat. “I’ll use that halo of yours as a collar.”

Another fantastic debut work! Woof, can't believe my luck guys.

First of all, don't be scared by the lower rating. I was scared too but damn, the plot was just too intriguing for me to swipe this book aside. A guy was trying to kill himself but a passerby saved him and got hurt instead. He then developed this kind of unhealthy obsession with her and initially wanted to make her life hell for saving him. See where this is heading? Intriguing right?

So sit down and pick this book up. Give it a chance if you love a dark twisted love story.

Me? I love it.

Katherine wasn’t made for me. And I know someone else curses my name for keeping her when she isn’t mine to take. Yet, I feel created for her, custom-made, forced to heel at her laughter, weak in the knees from the tremble of her voice. So I thank whichever god made her. Maybe they curse me, too, but I don’t care. I stole her, and I would do it all over again if I could.

If I could describe this book with only one word, the word would be worship. Our hero here is psychotic, deeply devoted, crazy in love and disturbed. And his obsession is this girl who saved him from killing himself. I'm sure there are some fascinating psychological theories behind his behaviour but damn, he pulled me in with his persona. And when he took that one step further into making her his, I mean, I was not surprised. I just found him very interesting.

“You’ll quickly find that I am the only one capable of determining what’s good for you, Katherine. You have been convinced you’re a burden to others; here I am, relieving others of that so-called burden.”

Super interesting.

Anyway, another HIGHLY recommended read from me.

This book had me hooked from the start! Carmen Gambit’s writing is absolutely captivating, drawing you in with raw, real emotions from page one. Kittie saves Dorian’s life, and in return, Dorian kidnaps her to protect her from the dangers surrounding them. This unexpected twist sets the stage for a slow-burn romance that’s thrilling, emotional, and completely immersive.

Dorian’s dark, brooding nature and Kittie’s fierce resilience create the perfect dynamic. Their chemistry is undeniable, and I couldn’t help but get completely invested in their journey. The tension between them builds gradually, with stolen moments of intimacy that feel earned and meaningful. Watching Kittie’s vulnerability unfold as she begins to trust Dorian made their bond even more powerful.

The protective instincts Dorian has for Kittie, combined with her gradual surrender to him, kept me turning the pages. Their connection was magnetic, and I loved how their slow-burning romance felt authentic and real. If you love intense, emotional romances with unforgettable characters and a bond that lingers long after the last page, this one is a must-read.

3.75/5 (rounded to 4!) ⭐️ Wow, As an ARC reader for Carmen, this was great!! The plot was captivating and I fell in love with Kittie.

Some parts of the plot felt a bit rushed and I would have loved if they were a bit longer and were explained more.

Overall, the love between Dorian and Kittie was beautiful and I’m so glad they got their happy ending after all they had been through together 💛

Rating: 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 3 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Favorite Tropes: She Saves Him, Obsessed Morally Grey MMC, Dual POV, Kidnapping, Slight GrumpyxSunshine, Touch her & 💀

Tagline: When a man is saved by a young woman from a car crash, he’ll go at any lengths to keep his savior in his grasp.

Dorian is haphazardly rescued by Katherine “Kitty” after he haphazardly stepped into the road in front of a car. He insists she’ll get nothing out of him, but he can’t help but visit her hospital room constantly. What started as a small obsession is quickly growing like gasoline to a fire, & he’s not afraid to go to extreme lengths to keep her in his arms… even kidnapping.

Thoughts: If you’re looking for an edge of your seat read to fill in that Carter gap from Willow Winters, this is the book for you. I absolutely loved Dorian (incase you can’t tell my bias in my review 👀) and found the characters to be incredibly enjoyable. And let me tell you! The amount of ICONIC quotes in this book are too many for my Canva to handle!

This was a dark captive romance between Dorian and Kittie. Out of all odds, they met and in the end I think they saved one another. I shall not say more so everyone should read it once it’s released.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! There are not many books out there that satisfy my every need. Of course not all books would, but I am so happy I found this book!!!!

The story: This book had the perfect amount of slow burn, build, conflict, twists, and chaos while also giving me the perfect amount of insta-love, obsession, spice, and passion. There was such beauty in the plot and character development that just sent me through a blissful journey. I don’t know what it is about a gilded cage type story that just really makes me feel something. Feeling trapped yet free is such a complicated feeling and Ms Gambit captured these thoughts perfectly. The writing was beautiful, and I just can’t get enough!! I thought the plot was very original too! I haven’t read a book about a man getting saved, and then becoming obsessed with the woman who saved him. I find it kind of endearing (I’m normal I promise), and sweet in a way. AH!! I love it 🥰

The characters: With elements of Stockholm Syndrome, Kittie, the FMC, finds it hard to understand her thoughts, especially when they are so contradicting to each other. Did she hit her head a couple of times? Possibly. Was I dropped on my head as a child? Yes, actually I was. BUT, that doesn’t make us girlies who fall in love with our fictional captors crazy. But Kittie is just such a sweetheart. Her character development from a meek and shy woman to a woman with confidence is so beautiful to watch. And not only does she have Dorian, she has two other wonderful people in her support group! Yes she was kidnapped and kept in a giant mansion. But we can look past that, right? I mean, Dorian gives her forehead kisses 😩

The spice: This was about a 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5/5 on the pepper scale. There were about 5-6 open door scenes with some being slightly less graphic than others. BUT IT WAS STILL STEAMIER THAN MY DAILY 106°F SHOWER! 🫡 Like fog up the mirror type spice… As mentioned, Kittie is a virgin. I was a little disappointed with how it was taken, but I do think it was a spur of the moment type decision and both Dorian and Kittie didn’t regret it lol but the scene with a little bit of rope 👀 yes PUH-LEEEEZE! Ok, ok, anyway, I just loved everything about this book, and I can’t wait for people to read this!!

Remember: if you are having any suicidal thoughts please don’t hesitate to reach out; 988 is the (US) National Suicide Hotline and can help you <3

Thank you again Ms. Gambit for giving me the honor of reading this early!

If I didn't have a schedule to keep, I would have gone right back to the beginning and started this book again!! I didn't want this one to end, I loved it SO much!

I could read about our MFC and MMC, Kittie and Dorian, all day. Their story is beautiful, dark, obsessive, violent and deeply emotional. I was really in my feelings by the end, and had most definitely cried. More than once.

Despite his darkness, it was near impossible to not fall for Dorian. He is handsome, dark and brooding. Our story even starts with him running from his own demons. He is also strong, protective and fiercely possessive of what he believes is his. Kittie is smart, quiet and reserved. She thinks herself to be a burden upon those surrounding her, when in reality, she's the anchor holding everything and everyone together. She is strong and resilient. Easy to identify with, and hard to not fall completely for, as well. And there are dark forces greater than the both of them, trying desperately to keep them apart. Even by means of death, if necessary.

I previously stated that this tale is beautiful, as well as very dark. It is most definitely a romance story, but with very morally black themes. And as always I urge you to read the content warning and trigger list. No book, no matter how beautiful or beautifully written, is worth risking your mental well-being. And I know our very gifted author would agree.

And finally, the reason we all came here... The spice! My GOODNESS this one left me breathless and in desperate need of multiple cold showers. It's entirely possible I drooled on my Kindle. No shame!! Cause this one was HOT AF, and I'll be leaving with a 5 outta 5 🌶️'s spice rating! I know you won't be disappointed, and I hope that you love every part of this one as much as I do. 🖤

3.5⭐️ This book is a dark, captive romance. 𝙎𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚. So mind your triggers when choosing this. But… here are my thoughts…
Maybe I’m a little twisted, but I actually felt like the whole “holding her captive” stuff made sense. Haha. Dorian didn’t necessarily go about things in the best way, and yes, he’s a little messed up with how he handles certain situations. BUT, I also see where he’s coming from in that he’s trying to protect her from worse demons. And I wouldn’t really consider her feelings back to him to be Stockholm Syndrome. Because I think she had feelings well before being held prisoner. It definitely complicated the situation though obviously, and you see them both struggling with it throughout the story. While I am not the biggest dark romance reader, this isn’t my first one either. I don’t have any personal triggers that really bother me…So I’m up to read just about anything. With that said, I’m also not the biggest fan of BDSM or “punishment” with intimacy. That was probably my least favorite part of this book. I did enjoy the softer sides of Dorian though, and his fierce love & protection of her. I really was rooting for them in the end. I also enjoyed the bonds formed between Kittie and his cousins. Overall, I enjoyed the book. I was glad there was actual plot going on besides his obsession over her, and to me, the evolution of the emotions involved, made sense. While it’s not my personal favorite romance read (mainly just because most of their intimate scenes that I couldn’t get into due to the aggression & style….It’s just not my thing), if that IS something you’re into, then I think you’ll really like this one! The writing was great, and I think this indie author is going places!

This is a story of a young woman who saves a man from suicide. The hero is angry and kidnaps the heroine then falls in love with her. I rate this story as three stars. I felt the story needed more description and details. By mid book I couldn’t remember what the hero looked like. I needed more detailed descriptions of the supporting characters to better understand.

If you are going to lead an opening of a story with a suicide attempt, I would like some closure regarding this. But after the incident, it’s never brought up again. It’s never addressed or resolved other than the heroine offering to be an ear if the hero ever wanted to talk. We don’t even understand why is he pushed to that resort. No emotional resolution. Disappointed.

There was hardly any description of the sex scenes. Granted it’s not smut, thankfully, but if you are going to rate a book 18+ I need to feel some type of heat. “He pushed his member into me…” like what?

Idk… it was lacking. Let’s just say I won’t remember this story next week.

Spoilers:

Age Gap: Depends on how u look at it? heroine is 20, hero is 30
Pregnancy: No
BDSM: Mild Spanking, Rope Play
Sex with OF/OM: No
Cheating: No
Cliffhanger: No
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️
Plot: 4/5

I had the wonderful opportunity to arc read this book for an honest review!

This is a dark romance so please read the trigger warnings before reading.

Abduction/Captivity Stockholm Syndrome Suicidal Ideation/Attempt Violence, Blood, Murder Head Injuries/Confusion Flashbacks of Child Abuse Religious Themes/Blasphemy BDSM/Pain and Punishment Dynamics Coercion, Intimidation, Fear, Manipulation

I was hooked from the beginning. Kittie saving Dorian and him being so pissed he swore he would hurt her. But the longer he talked to her the harder he fell for her. His need to protect her and claim her as his own overrides everything. He's a bit morally black when it comes to the ones he loves. Kittie is a sweetheart but i never felt like she was a damsel in distress. Even with her head injury and the memories fading, she still plotted in her own way. In the end she falls right along with Dorian.

I haven't read too many dark romances but this was my sign to read more of them! I enjoyed being able to watch these characters hate, love, and fight for each other.

Kittie, one fateful day, makes a snap decision to save Dorian from making an irreversible decision; unfortunately, it results in her ending up in hospital. Dorian, on the other hand, is furious. She saved him, determined to hate her, and punished her by staying by her bedside day after day, only to become insanely obsessed with her the moment she finally opens her eyes, resulting in Kitty's life changing dramatically.

Dorian might very well be completely insane. Honestly, it's hard to tell; both he and Kittie have had a lot of heartache in their lives.

My favourite character is actually Cory. He kind of stole the show for me.

I did find it took me a while to get into this book, but once I did, I enjoyed it. It definitely has strong Stockholm vibes, but it isn't exceptionally dark, it is more morally grey.

Slow burn, low spice but a definite underlying plot...

It’s wasn’t a bad book, just not my cup of tea.

Spoilers*****

What I liked:
- OTT and possessive MMC
- MMC didn’t take long to come to the realization of his feelings

What I didn’t like:

- so yes MMC loved the FMC buttttt I didn’t like the almost abrupt switch to “disciplining” the FMC via aggressive spankings. Weird to think of someone who never had a pain kink in their 30 years… to all of a sudden having one
- FMC was on the weak side. Not a single time to the point of me stopping this book did she successfully escape or even really try without for some reason feeling guilty
- no safe sex. Used morning after pill like once

This debut book by Carmen is a rollercoaster! Katherine is selfless to a fault, and that fault is her own happiness and wellbeing. Dorian crashes into her life, and everything is upended. She is forced to change, and he is forced to take stock of his life and choices. These two met by chance but are fated. I fell in love with these two broken souls and even Raney & Corey. The story is dark, heavy , and heartwarming at times. There were times I gasped and cried overall it was insanely good and highly recommended.

Ohhhhhh my....Carmen....how dare you make me feel feelings!!! This book had me reeling from the very beginning. I would be thinking the MMC was gonna go one way then I found myself going "Waaait, whaaaat?!" Then continuing to try to make my eyes read faster because this story is absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for allowing me to ARC read this for you Carmen, I absolutely enjoyed it. Not only is the FMC's name the same as my favorite band of all time, this book had me soooobbbbbing! (in a good way) I absolutely recommend reading this book.

Stunning debut novel.

A young woman saves a man's life when he is about to commit suicide. This sets in chain of course of events ...

Is it love or is it obsession or are they both the same?

I do wish it had been a bit longer and I would have liked to have known more about the background of all the characters including the bad ones, but a very strong 4.5 and I can't wait to read more from this author

Kittie made no sense to me at all. Why did she fall in love with him?!? She barely knows him, gets kidnapped, and instead of having a normal reaction, she’s already all over him. Talking about, “I forgive you, this isn’t you” … girl, what are you even saying?? BFFR 💀
