This debut novel offers a fresh take on a fantasy world, a warrior woman out for a revenge, and some satisfying plot twists.
One of the things I loved about the main character was how real and flawed she was portrayed. She is angry, bitter, vengeful, and none of that is held back or romanticized. Rather, we see some of the ways in which that destroys her and others, and see that those who truly love her are the ones who will call her out on it.
Looking forward to seeing how the story will progress in the sequel!
Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book:
“I have nothing to prove, only a purpose to fulfill.”
“Anywhere you go, it doesn’t matter where, you walk with purpose, with certainty. All things you do are important. Every move you make is observed, take their scrutiny in stride and grace, is what Hadiya had said.”
“Maybe I am homesick,” I begin… “But I don’t believe I am in the traditional way the word is used. I think I am homesick in the sense that I’m sick of home. There’s only so many things I can get behind regarding politics and sometimes it would be nice to just get away for a while.”
“I nestle…toward the flames and let time slip away from me as I fall into a world of fiction. The reprieve from reality is the perfect cure for my irritability and as I form friendships with people who were never real to begin with, I find the world around me a bit more bearable.”
“Vetta clears his throat in subtle warning to my threat, but I only raise my chin. I refuse to cower before a crown of deceit. If she refuses my request, I will not hesitate to go through with my promise.”
A hella solid start to a series! If you enjoy action then you will undeniably enjoy this book. It was incredibly dynamic! FMC is badass, intelligent and beautiful. A boy, does she use it to her advantage! I also love that there are side characters that are amusing! Small clues are dropped through out the story that come to a full circle I am really looking forward to finding out what happens next with Audra and Draven… and I can’t forget Mav!
This page-turning classic-in-the-making allows the reader to visualize every detail in a world of suspended disbelief. Audra is a protagonist that readers can not only identify with, but also cheer, hope, and even grieve for. This novel blends fantasy with human reality, and Delp craftily owns the narrative in a sense that one feels part of it, while also enjoying a sense of romance that real life doesn't quite offer.
