Treaties of Moial #5

Oracle's Reign

Rate this book
A powerless prince. An oracle who doesn’t see the future. Together, can they change an empire?

Yslie wants to usher Pynth into the new future promised by the recent revolution, not another generation of thoughtless rulers. If she wants to make a difference, she must convince the prince to choose her as his empress. But why would he ever look twice at an oracle who can only see the past?

Peroen has spent his entire life avoiding the court—avoiding his father. But the Emperor is no longer the foremost power in the land, and to satisfy the newly elected Assembly, Peroen must choose an oracle as a bride. He knows who he wants at his side—if she can see him as something more than a duty. To marry Yslie, he’ll not only have to face scheming bridal candidates, devious politicians, and a court that wants to cling to the little power it has left, but also convince her that her heart is safe in his hands.

Can Yslie and Peroen master a game neither ever wanted to play, or will politics get in the way of love?

***The books in The Treaties of Moial Series each focus on a different couple. The books can be read as stand-alones, but may be better enjoyed in chronological order. Each book has a HEA.

Jen Lynning never outgrew her love of fairy tales. (She may have studied German just so she could read the Brothers Grimm in the original.) When she wasn’t reading about life in a magical world, she was imagining it. Eventually she decided to start writing her own stories where magic and romance meet.

Jen lives in Northern Virginia with her two cats, who make their own contributions to her writing by walking across the keyboard, and her bird, who offers commentary on the whole process.

After finishing the Once Upon an Enchantment series, I really missed Jen Lynning’s storytelling—there’s something so comforting about the way she writes genuinely good and kind characters. Oracle’s Reign had a different vibe, with more political intrigue and court drama, but it still had that warmth that makes her books feel like a cozy escape.

I loved Yslie and Peroen. Their romance felt so natural, with just the right balance of tension and tenderness. Yslie’s struggle with feeling like she wasn’t enough, just because her visions only showed the past, really resonated with me. And Peroen—he was such a soft yet determined character, trying so hard to prove himself in a world that kept underestimating him.
Watching them slowly realize they were exactly what the other needed was so satisfying.

The court politics added a nice layer of tension, and I loved the world building, which is very interesting and unique. Still, what really mattered to me was the emotional journey, and Lynning delivered that beautifully.
It was so nice to be back in her world, even if it was a different one, and I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series!

Oracle’s Reign is out on February 27th! Don't miss it 🤍

Dual POV: 👩‍❤️‍👨
The POV alternates between the FMC and MMC and it is very easy to pick up who we are with each time.
Spice: 🌶️
There are a couple of spicy scenes but they are very short (think a few sentences, or one page at most).
Strangers to Lovers: 💖
I’m not sure this is an official troupe but I would describe this book as such!
Political Marriage & Fragile Alliances: 👑⚔️
There is plenty of backstory explained to figure this out in the book however, Stranger’s Choice is a great addition to that backstory.

This novella is a treat! I smiled so much while reading this and I think I might believe in love again. 🤣

If you haven’t read any of Jen Lynning’s previous books in the series you would enjoy Oracle’s Reign just as much. However, once you do finish this book you will WANT to read all of her other books in the series!

Prior to starting this novella I read Strangers Choice (Treaties of Moial Book 3). While it is not necessary to read it before hand it added so much depth. It was great to revisit characters and see their characters arcs continue.

This book features a lot of political intrigue in the wake of a new, and hopefully better, empire. The FMC Yslie is an oracle who has volunteered to be considered to marry into the royal line. The MMC Perone is an artist who has always favored his love for the arts over his place in the royal succession as a necessity.

Both of these characters have what I would say are incredibly relatable journeys to find themselves and realize their power. Even though this is a fantasy world with magic I felt that I could see myself in both of them. We all so often under-estimate ourselves and favor sinking into the shadows.

I would say that the overall situation in this novella is high stakes but you get to spend so much time with the characters getting to know them and seeing them get to know each other. The relationships are genuine and special.

I would highly recommend this book to get into Jen Lynning’s writing! You don’t want to miss this sweet and satisfying romantasy.

Such a satisfying conclusion!

I have been looking forward to this book ever since I heard it would be a continuation of the story from Book #3, Stranger's Choice. It is so satisfying to see more of how the political upheaval from book 3 plays out, and Yslie and Peroen were the perfect couple to work through everything.

It has been some time since I read the previous book in the series set in the land of Pynth, but I was able to follow the story just fine. While it would make the most sense if you've read the previous book(s) in the series (and I highly recommend them as well), I think that anyone reading this book for the first time would do okay with the world-building. The author does an amazing job of working the exposition into the conversations and action without it feeling like an info-dump you need to slog through to get to the good bits.

The romance in the story was lovely and sweet and perfectly balanced with the more political aspects of the story-line and left me wanting more, not because the story wasn't paced well, but simply because I wanted more time with these characters!

3.5 rounding down.

I'm so pleased that the Treaties of Moial is back with a new entry - I really appreciate the political machinations slant that Jen Lynning inserts into the Romantasy genre, it's a refreshing and intelligent break from "chosen one saves the world". And it was just as good here as the rest of the series (though I wouldn't recommend this one as a series starter; it's a continuance of a political situation set-up in previous books and there's little recap. Considering there's been a gap since the last book in the series was published, I would have loved a 'previously in the Treaties of Moial' section!).

Unfortunately the pacing of the main romance fell a little flat for me. Yslie and Peroen spend the first half of Oracle's Reign getting to know and respect each other in a way that felt realistic and right for their respective characters; then an abruptly-placed new scene takes their relationship from about 50 to 100 in seconds. Things settle back down to a nice place, but it felt like we miss some of the interactions that take them from 'leaning towards something more than friendship' to 'ride or die soulmates'. Pitfalls of novella length, perhaps.

***Arc review***

This was great, low-angst book, with some external conflict and political intrigue. I haven’t read the rest of the series yet, but had no issues keeping up - the previous events are woven into the story well, so you understand what’s going on without any clunky or obvious recaps.

Peroen and Yslie are immediately taken with each other, but they’re both cautious - they have to work to build trust and get to know one another. The first half of the book is spent developing their relationship, which I appreciated. I feel like novellas usually resort to insta-love to save time, and I really liked that Oracle’s Reign didn’t go that route.

The MCs are both so sweet and thoughtful, but focused on putting the other person first, which creates some angst because they aren’t forthright about their feelings. This was balanced really well with the length of the book - it doesn’t happen for so long that you get frustrated with them being too self-sacrificing. Although once they decide to be honest about their feelings, things accelerate super quickly. It was a little jarring, but not a huge deal, and then we could focus on more of the external conflict in the book. Overall, the pacing was good.

I really enjoyed Lynning’s writing, and will be checking out the rest of the Treaties of Moial books!

▸Gaslamp fantasy novella

▸Bride selection

▸The Powerless finally recognize their power

Peroen must choose an oracle as a bride. then the day came when Peroen met 4 oracles from the country as his prospective brides. Peroen had known since the first time he met Yslie, he had chosen who his bride would be. but their path was not easy, to marry Yslie, he’ll not only have to face scheming bridal candidates, devious politicians, and a court that wants to cling to the little power it has left but also convince her that her heart is safe in his hands.

I am so grateful to be part of Jen Lynning's ARC team, because her books never disappoint. whether it's engaging writing, well-developed characters or compelling plots, they all gave a comfort cozy fantasy in a way I enjoy. this one was an easy and fun read, sweet, funny and low stakes. as for the romance, both MCs did have instant chemistry and connection but the pacing was good, while this is a novella, it doesn't go in a rush either in romance or storyline. what a cute and delightful read!

thank you to Jen Lynning for giving me the opportunity to read this book♥️ all opinions are my own.

Oracle's Reign by Jen Lynning is a fast-paced magical fantasy story filled with romance, court intrigue, and an amazing cast of characters.I am a fan of Mrs.Lynning's stories, and I never get tired of reading them.

The romance between the mmc prince Peroen, and the fmc Yslie has so many cute moments especially the stolen glances.Peroen is a gentleman who would do anything to protect Yslie.

Mrs.Lynning's writing style is always beautiful, and very detailed in a way that truly makes it feel as though the reader is in the story.

The pacing throughout the story is well-executed, and it is easy to follow along with the events in the story.

Mrs.Lynning's love for painting, and music truly shines brightly.Art,music, and fantasy are an excellent combination.

Thank you Mrs.Lynning for the opportunity to read another one of your stunning stories, and I look forward to reading even more in the future.

What a wonderful addition to the Treaties of Moial series.

Auralie and Sebin were my all time favourite couple from this universe. So even though we didn't see them, to be back in their world and hear them referenced was a nice callback.

I'd always liked Peroen, even though he had so little power. Or maybe that was why I liked him. He was a human, not a power hungry caricature.

I don't usually enjoy the whole insta-love idea (unless we're talking fated-mates, and sometimes even then if it's not done well it's cringy), which....are we kind of talking fate here? I won't spoil anything, but regardless of being fated or not, Ms. Lynning made it work for me. Their initial meeting was sweet and honest and I can understand why they were immediately drawn to each other.

I hope we get more books in this world.
Can be read as a standalone, but readers will get much more enjoyment out of it if they've at least read Stranger's Choice first. Some tastefully done spicy scenes, for those to whom it matters.

What a great read. This is a well-crafted short story that weaves a most uplifting theme. The worlds that Jen Lynning create touch your heart and allow you to escape into landscapes of healing. There are deceptions, villains, and politics. There are also moments of hope, trust, and love. In this book, two souls, each having been treated with distain, need to overcome their fears and hurts from their past. Yslie, an Oracle, has been taught to think less of her skill to read the past. Prince Pereon has an exacting, unscrupulous Father, who enjoys being a tyrant. Each has strength of character, but need to find their voices, individually and together. It is a time of change in their world, and who better than these two to provide guidance on the path forward. This is book 5 of the Treaties of Moial series. Read the series and immerse yourself in each of the stories. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

‘With power comes the duty to serve’
Leaders of all types are in a position to help others. They are accountable for seeing to their subjects’ basic needs, improving their lot, caretaking of the needy, providing security, giving voice to all constituencies, being fiscally responsible, uniting battling factions, etc. Leaders should not be cruel, merciless, vindictive, self-serving, nor easily swayed by sycophants.
The higher level the leadership is, the more future-thinking (no pun intended regarding the oracles) the leader should be when making decisions.
No truer words have been laid to parchment than by Emperor Daitano Tjawer the First:
‘Peace means more than just a lack of war.’

Some fave thoughts:
Never diminish yourself.
‘The world would be a happier place if we all did what we loved.’

Looking forward to next in series ‘Incubus’s Scheme’ – ’cause scheming is exactly what the main character does best!

I loved that we get to know Peroen in Book 5, who was in the shadows earlier in the series.

The forced / arranged marriage was an interesting tool in this story. It’s a Gaslamp fantasy, it all seems extremely old fashioned - but at the same time, the themes feel very current: there’s trouble brewing, political factions being established; people who want power and control, and those who do not but are better suited to govern… meanwhile, a love story blossoms among the chaos, and it was fun seeing what happens and how our MCs gain control of their own lives. I was sad this book was only 150 pages, as I really enjoyed watching this story unfold! It’s also fast paced and went by so quickly!

Glad I got to read an early ARC of this book!

Incredible world building set in a land of deception, danger, politics and subterfuge, it is well paced and suspenseful. I am looking forward to the next read!

With deception of love and trust between these characters were so much in love and romance. Hope was on the arisen of passion and true happiness and more.

I absolutely loved this latest book by Jen. If you are looking for an immersive world building fantasy these are your books.
Yslie is called upon with three other women to become the princes wife. To take over the throne. I have come late to this series and was offered this read and I devoured it. I’ve been a little slow as had a poorly rue or it would have been a two day read. I don’t want to drop any more spoilers. But it’s full of thrills and spills. There are a few twists and turns and total surprises. Definitely give it a go. I’m going to be reading the rest!

Perfect mix of political intrigue, loveable and fascinating characters, different magical races - including elemental sprites, incubi and oracles - and their unique abilities, a gripping plot and a satisfying romance.

We follow along Yslie and Peroen in their story of being strangers to lovers, and is set in a political court of half arranged marriage.
I have not read any of the other books in this series, but I will be circling back to read them because I enjoyed this book so much.

I really loved Stranger's Choice, so I was excited to return to the world of the Treaties of Moial series and follow up with the marriage demanded in Stranger's Choice. Prince Peroen is a fascinating character to me, as he grew up hiding in the shadows and constantly spied on. I felt like this story could have done more to dive into the difficulties of his past, and how much of a struggle it would be for him to assert himself, and stop looking over his shoulder. Instead, a lot of the focus was on the politics of the new Assembly, and the personalities of his prospective brides. I enjoyed the story and had an easy time cheering for the characters, but it lacked some of the emotional punch of the earlier books in the series. Still I recommend it to anyone who has read Stranger's Choice, and I've enjoyed this series overall-- I just wouldn't recommend jumping into it with this book.

Fun short read that follows on from Book 3 of this series. Loved seeing the relationship between Peroen and Yslie grow at a realistic rate and a genuine bond form between them.
I had only read book 3 before reading this one and personally I would have benefitted from reading the whole series to wrap my head around the world building. However I can see how this would be easy for others to pick up without reading the rest of the series
