Chasing Time

Rate this book
A cynical government operative is sent back in time to 5th century France, during the rise of the Merovingian kings and the Frankish Empire. It's a critical juncture in Christianity is spreading across the continent while the divided Holy Roman Empire is in collapse, and armies are on the move in an effort to not just conquer, but to leave a lasting legacy in their wake.

The To find and eliminate Dr. Barnard Jameson, a rogue scientist, before history can be significantly altered. Finding Dr. Jameson, aka Bertric, Clovis' most trusted adviser, was the easy part. Eliminating the smirking, pudgy little scientist proves to be a lot harder than he expected.

The smug doctor's plans of advancing human civilization by introducing 21st century concepts and technology more than a thousand years early sound like the ravings of a madman with a God complex... but is it really any worse than how the dark ages of history actually turned out?

I picked the book because I was intrigued by the villain, I'd like to see how mad the scientist was portrayed. This book humanizes the villain, however, so I sympathized with him and it was hard to decide who to root for (the protagonist or antagonist?), to the point I almost felt cheated because the moment the main character made peace with the villain, then there would be no more opposition/conflict left; the story automatically ends itself (felt a bit anti-climatic). Also, since I received about 300 pages PDF file, it was confusing and a bit frustrating when I read some 100 pages of it and found that the story was closing to an end (maybe I'd feel more closure if there's only 1 story in the file).

The protagonist is okay, I like his quirks although sometimes his pessimism is irritating. I'm not sure I like the sidekick (General Volusus); his presence is distracting. I don't know his contribution to the story besides laughing at the protagonist's jokes. I thought he was the romantic interest of the protagonist, but their relationship isn't fleshed out (even if they're only going to be friends, I expect more chemistry in the text).

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Another time travel tale which had me thinking in circles, which is always a good sign.

Interesting journey into the past, circa 400AD for the escaped scientist, and for the spec-ops guy sent to retrieve or, rather harshly, eliminate him.

All in all, enough intrigue and twists, good character insights, humour and adventure to keep the pages turning rapidly.

I will undoubtedly be reading more from this author. Well worth a read.
