Jeremiah Quick

Rate this book
Librarian Alternate/new cover edition for ISBN# 9781310267932.

When Jeremiah Quick finds Pretty Loberg at Walmart twenty years after high school, she gets into his car even though she knows he'll disrupt her marriage and her life.

Behind those sharp blue eyes is a man with a quick brain, a cynical outlook, and a penchant for the subversive. He's kinky, controlling, and more than a little broken.
Pretty wants to fix him, but Jeremiah won't be fixed. Instead, he'll break her, remake her, and talk her into doing something terrible.

Only one will live to drive away.

Back in school, Jeremiah Quick was Other and he fascinated Pretty Loberg with his Otherness. He didn't give a fuck about society, or middle class values, or following the crowd.

To pampered, middle class good-girl Pretty Loberg, Jeremiah was terrifying. And she couldn't stay away.

She'd been trained since her earliest years to follow the crowd, not stand out, don't embarrass the family. Stick to the status quo and not only will everything be fine, but everyone will like you.

Jeremiah didn't like her. In fact, sometimes she thought he hated her.

In one sense she was wrong about that, but she was also dead right.

Until now 'horror' was something I associated with creaking stairs, birds croaking menacingly, curling toes as the music swells to a nani-nani sound, the stranger lurking behind a curtain, a presence in a house that causes the doll to grow fingernails and throw the tea kettle at you. You just know that something awful is going to happen any minute, and you're afraid to look, really.
The novel 'Jeremiah Quick' however is tagged with terms like 'erotic horror' and 'romantic horror' by the author (Smashwords vendor site). Terms that I'm grappling with myself. What is erotic and/or romantic horror? These indications of subgenre seem to contain a contradiction in terms to me. And I find myself even more confused to see the novel also tagged with the terms gay fiction, dark fiction, drama, tragedy and psychological fiction.

Actually, I think it's none of the above, and imo it's also not romance, erotica, be they gay, bdsm or otherwise.

If I had to compare this novel to other kinds of printed texts that are out there, the closest thing I can come up with is a very oldfashioned genre: the fairytale. The original Grimm fairytales to be precise. The ones where the king doesn't lose a night's sleep over putting the villain in a vat of boiling oil, where the stepmother doesn't think twice to advise the daughter to cut off a toe to make the shoe fit. Remember those fairytales?

Did they made you shiver and gawk, but you had to read on because the protagonist had not completed all three tasks yet? Did you love them and still prefer them over the PG-something fairytales we give our children now? Did you find yourself entranced in the strange world created on the pages? Did you devour that book?
Did you?

Are you over the age of consent, secure in your sexuality and life choices? Are you open minded, loathe to condemn something as 'deviant' if you find it is different to what life has brought you?
Are you?

In that case 'Jeremiah Quick' might be for you.

Pretty Loberg has not seen Jeremiah Quick in twenty years, not since high school. Back then, he was different from everything she knew. Polar opposites, in more than one way, an intense fascination and interaction of attracting-repelling had formed between them then. She is married and has children now. God only knows where he has been all that time.
So what could possibly happen when Jeremiah finds Pretty after twenty years, in front of a Walmart store of all places? Hi, how have you been, goodbye and life continues, seems to be the logical thing, right?
Wrong.

Ms Johnson has an excellent writing style and the novel is edited to a high standard.
The story of Jeremiah and Pretty has momentum from page 1, which is something that scores high points in my reckoning. The author manages to keep that momentum going throughout the novel. Nothing is rushed or drawn out.
The author's descriptive narrative is such that I felt I could have been there or saw the surroundings and events in my mind's eye. Descriptions of events in times gone by were vivid and brought back memories of feelings I had almost forgotten.
Story telling is mainly done in third person point of view, with large portions in Jeremiah's first person point of view. Where some authors seem to struggle with dual points of view, Ms Johnson does an excellent job of it, using both 'voices' to best advantage.
Ms Johnson's characters come across as people I might have met. But haven't. I have never met characters such as Jeremiah and Pretty. Throughout the novel circumstances are described that are alien to me, choices are made that baffle me. Rather than losing me as a reader, however, Ms Johnson manages to keep me with the programme and in the loop of what is happening and why. Thereby bringing me to a closer understanding of people I might have met but never have, who show feelings and actions I simultaneously don't and do understand, but who share one thing: They fascinate me and I'm glad I read their story, as written down by the author.

Read this story to be fascinated, like you were with that old Grimm's fairytale. Substitute forest with world. Substitute giant with goth, princess with married woman, three tasks with coming of age, love and death, good and evil with sunshine and darkness.
You might even find a hidden lesson, or two.
Who knows.
Reading this will be a more complex and satisfying experience than the old fairytales offered though.
And whether it has a happy ending? You'll just have to find out for yourself.

Full disclosure: You'll find me listed as a beta reader for this novel. That fact has had no influence on the contents of this review however. I rate and review as I find.

*Might be a few Spoilers I didn't hide*

Immediately I was drawn into this book especially with all the “Labyrinth” references. For me it added a bit of playfulness and comfort. (I had a blast pointing them out and explaining what I thought they meant to a friend who, can you believe has never seen this classic?! /gasp hehe)

In the beginning of chapter 35 one can find this:

"......." Jeremiah Quick, S.M. Johnson

compare to: Labyrinth (retrieved quote from IMDB)

I do not find it odd that the parts not quoted, are the most telling. I believe that this, among other things are a result of Johnson's own gentle guiding magick.

When the Goblin King, Jareth says 'you cowered before me and I was frightening' ...so f*cking right, on so many levels.
She wanted to cower to him so he made it okay to cower. ...generous
Jeremiah Quick, made me cry. (literally cry and I am not entirely sure why) It is way deeper then anything I have read in a long time.

I was expecting a light romance with a few spanking sessions. You know the story, old boyfriend comes back rocks girl's world. This time the twist is maybe boy schools girl on some quasi political views. Girl learns to like spanks.

-----now that was the expectation

What I got was nothing less than magic, both blood and love ...Magick. What I got was a very unique, great and terrible tale. One I wont soon forget. I am astounded ...moved...and a little ashamed of myself. (literally ashamed and I am not entirely sure why)
Maybe because I undeservedly received so much.

Suddenly my eagerness felt like total disrespect.
I thought I wanted a little dark and a little sexy.
Then I realized I wanted exactly what I received, dark and lovely.
I think a word needs to be made that is defined as 'exquisitely beautiful yet exquisitely painful' that would be the word for this book ...So much darker and so much deeper ...

Dark Erotica
Horror with sexual content (non & dubious consent).

20/10 - Right now I am too freakn angry to rate this book.

Yes it was dark and F'd up, I expected that, actually I expected more. Around 40% I good bored and considered skimming a few chapters. Then we got to Jeremiah in Juvie and I found that totally captivating.

Then we got to the end, and I was like **what??? Seriously, that is what it was all about? Nope, not buying it. A guy with that many issues, would have done 'that' to himself, especially considering it wasn't something new to him. And all the stuff he did to what's her name, made even less sense, what was the point, other than to (try) to shock the reader. I don't mind dark books if they make sense! Jeremiah just appeared to do a whole lot of sick shit, because he could.

Still trying to digest that, I then go on to read the authors note, and really wanted to throw my kindle.

Apparently she was trying to bring awareness to TWO things that I have lost people too, and then I felt freakn RAPED!! Both issues were barely touched on, exploited would be a more apt description.

What a terrible, terrible, way to show how much devastation two such tragic things, can impact on the lives of the people they touch.

22/10 - EDIT: I'm going to give this story one star for the time the author put into writing 'this'.

Abandoned at page 30.I think that I killed off a couple of brain cells when I read this book.
I bought into the hype, climbed on the bandwagon, but had to tuck and roll very soon after. I tried, I really did - I was even (unwillingly) willing to overlook all of the STUPID things going on, the GROSS things too.... But what fucking made my mind up to desert this story was that this idiot woman allows this guy to sex her - in her own house, where she lives with her husband and children - without saying anything remotely resembling a "NO". AND she has no qualms about leaving her husband and children to run off and be with this guy (who, in her mind, hates her). How sweet. No fucking way mother and fucker! Man, FUCK THIS SHIT. I gonna go get me a book that I will enjoy.

Wow. What to say about this novel.

It's...intense. I highly doubt people will have a "neutral" reaction to this book.

Personally, I loved it. It felt real on a deep level, even if that reality was in part symbolic. It also totally resonated with relationships I had in my own high school years, in particular with a very close friend who struggled with a lot of the same issues, in terms of feeling forever out of step with the world, and needing an intensity of feeling and connection with others to counteract that in some way, or maybe just to bear it. Flirting with the dark but loving and being drawn to the light was a component in our relationship, as well.

I don't want to say too much about the plot itself, because 1) I don't want to spoil it, and 2) more than anything, it served for me as a psychological journey and deconstruction. Primarily among the latter, it was like witnessing the systematic removal of all of the social "niceties" to reveal a kernel of raw truth underneath.

Or, it was a highly skilled exercise in brainwashing by an incredibly brilliant and manipulative sociopath...you decide.

Of course, I'm somewhat biased because I absolutely love this writer, and pretty much love everything of hers that I read. She captures spaces with her words like no other writer I know, and makes her characters so real I feel almost like I know them. Moreover, she has that gift of making sympathetic those situations and people who, on their face, might seem like they shouldn't be...which is a particular weakness of mine anyway.

Not for the faint of heart, however...or for those who like their morality in neat, succinct, black and white boxes where some things are always "good" and some people are always "bad" regardless of their life situations and the depth of feeling inside their hearts.

To be truly honest, this has been my hardest read to date. This is one emotional read, that has had me in tears. I wanted to rate this book 1 star, because I just hated to read it, but at the same time, how can I knock a book that created so much feeling and emotion within me.
I found this such a difficult read with what I do for a living, dealing with such things from an end prospective. If I had known, I would not have read this book. It is indeed a very dark read, and I've read some, but this is on another level.
This story is about the unusual love story of Jeremiah and Pretty who met in high school, and then parted for 20 years. Pretty was a normal girl, and went on to have the normal life with a lovely hubby and children. Jeremiah had issues. He had a lousy start in life, a dad who beat and abused him, and he sort so lice in a young girl with a big heart. He left, got on with his life, found tragedy again, so returned to the young girls heart, who belong to him and always will no matter what.
He requests she help him achieve the un speakable...he needs to die, and can not do this himself, so persuades her to help.
I just can not return to this to even write the review. I loved and hated Jeremiah, but I too love Pretty. I felt for all the characters, and my tears were all for them, for so many reasons. The sex is so hot and violent, but passionate at the same time.
It's a book that will last within me forever, and I'm afraid I will not be able to return to, because for me it's too close to home

I award 4 stars because of its clarity and insight. It's not for the faint hearted, and make sure you have a great supply of tissues !!!!

I was given this book by the author as part of the r2r BDSM read, in return for an honest review.

I don't know where to start. This was a book recommended by a friend and after reading the description i figured it sounded interesting. I give five stars because i feel it deserves no less than that.

This is not the story i expected. It pushed at my limits and passed every boundary that keeps me sane. This is not a story about love, romance, and sex. It is about a shattered soul who wants nothing more than to be with his other half. I spent a lot of time misunderstanding what i was reading. I assumed that Jeremiah was just as eager to finish what was between him and Pretty in high school. I was so wrong. Yes he wanted to finish what was started but not in a way i would have ever imagined. In the course of him getting her to understand why he needed her and exactly where she fit into his life, he made me understand. In my mind Pretty didn't exist, its was all about Jeremiah, from beginning to end. What do you do? Love him, hate him, condemn him, save him??

I was at a lost for words by the end. My emotional stability is all over the place. This is definitely a boundary pusher for me. It made me become too involved in every word.

Anybody who assumes this will be their next amazing dark erotic story will be disappointed. It is not about the sex, even though it does happen. The sex will be the furthest thing from your mind. It is truly one mind fuck of a story that i recommend anyone with that special dark side to indulge in.

Thank you Lynn. Im not sure of my enjoyment of the story but it was an eye opener to something seriously different.

It took a bit for me to get into this book but I pushed through and I am glad I did! I liked the alternating POV.

I did not like the characters through most of the book and the rest of the time I just felt sorry for them. However, I was kept on edge and turning the pages to the end. This book is well written but the entire time it is like WTF!

When Jeremiah Quick finds Pretty Loberg twenty years after high school, Pretty gets into his car, even though she knows Jeremiah will disrupt her marriage and her life. The entire time I was asking, "WHY!"

The author says "Jeremiah Quick He doesn't give a fuck about society, or middle class values, or following the crowd. He's kinky, mean, controlling, and more than a little bit broken.
Pretty wants to fix him.
Jeremiah wants to break her, remake her, and talk her into doing something terrible." This describes the characters very well.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes their boundaries pushed.

Disclaimer: I received an e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

Pretty met Jeremiah in high school, and she was quick to latch onto him. He was the complete opposite of her and everyone around her, and he drew her attention like moth to a flame. But all of a sudden, he was gone, and she was left to make her own way through life, all alone. However, leaving the grocery store one day 10 years later, ready to head home to her husband and two children, he steps from the shadows and back into her life, taking her on a whirlwind adventure she will never forget.

I will start by saying this book is nitty, gritty, descriptive, and definitely not for the faint of heart. However, the characters are gripping, Jeremiah's story is both sad and determined, and Pretty is just trying to figure out where she fits in all this. If you're squeamish and/or extremely vanilla and mainstream, this is probably not the book for you. However, if you like to flirt with the dark (or sleep with it every night), I would definitely recommend this story, and you will not be disappointed.

Wow! This was a brutal read. Jeremiah was a messed up dude. At times I hated him, other times I felt sympathy for him, and by the end, I was just sad. The torture in this book was very harsh, and it was hard for me to keep reading. Had to take a few breaks. That being said, I'm glad I finished it. It's one that will haunt me for a while.
