The Being(s) in Love Series

Magical creatures known as beings emerged from hiding amid the destruction of the First World War. Since then, they’ve lived on the margins of the human world as misunderstood objects of fear and desire. Some are beautiful, others fearsome and powerful. Yet for all their magic and strength, they are as vulnerable as anyone when it comes to matters of the heart.

I'm R. Cooper, a somewhat absentminded, often distracted, writer of queer romance. I'm probably most known for the Being(s) in Love series and The Suitable 'Verse stories. Also the occasional story about witches or firefighters in love.

It's a collection of short stories, character studies and additional scenes that is probably only for readers of the Beings in Love series but for those including me it's a little gem. Doesn't matter that most was published on different platforms for free already. I like that here they're all collected in one place and in a chronological order. It's just not possible to enjoy a meet-again with some of my favorites, watch their dorky struggles in their youth or see how they did after their story was told. Even in the smallest snippet you feel R. Cooper's love for her sometimes dorky characters and her empathy for their whimsical awkwardness which makes them real protagonists, forever incredulous in a hopeful melancholy.

Now I feel like I have to re-read Firebird again soon, if only to read about Rennet again (never could get enough of that imp).

A Gem

Absolute gem! R. Cooper tends to write comfort stories that are so, so needed in these times. This was an exquisite selection of short stories. A Queen and Her Knight is my favourite, I think, as it left the feeling of hope in me.

Short and sweet

Reveals some interesting details about this author's characters. In a couple cases, I now need to read the corresponding novels.

A collection of shorts that adds to & enhances the Beings In Love novels. It's like a box of chocolates: short sweet treats. I especially enjoyed:
"We Could Be Heroes (or Cousins)" which expands on Treasure For Treasure + His Mossy Boy.
"Devour" + "Beeswax" which both expand on short stories about Kazimir the firebird and his protege Miki from the collection The Firebird and Other Stories. "Beeswax" is beautiful, and you may need a box of tissues.
"Unexpected Hero In the Bagging Area" also expands on His Mossy Boy, with Deputy Kyle (!) taking a starring role as a tired cop transformed into an unlikely ally.

loved it

There is not a book or short story written by this author that I have not loved. I regularly read My Man Godric when I need a lift of mood. I don’t have the words to describe how these stories affect me.
