Fun. Nori (anyone else thinking of nori sushi rice at this name?) is on a foreign planet chasing after her very silly and naive adopted sister, Lara. Nori is a rare feline shifter and a badass, but petite, so most underestimate her badassery. She saves Lara from a handsy rapey nobleman, beats a prissy noblewoman who challenged her, and caught the attention of the king. All in a day's work.

The king ends up manipulating her into going home with him and well, they get it on. There ends up being some shady people trying to undermine the king, etc. and Nori helps beat them all down. She's not bloodthirsty, but she does like to solve her problems with violence and she is sassy. I enjoyed her efforts to put the king in his place and her threats to bodily harm people.

Short book, but good.

This was a very good story. I liked Nori and Menelaus and was very pleased with the story with it's dips and turns.

Nori is a shifter known as a Shakien Cat. She was sold to slavers when she was 6 and went through torture and torment at their hands for 2 years before she changed and killed them all. Because of her loss of control during this time Nori is always worried she'll lose control of her anger again and hurt people in a blind rage. She tries very hard to always keep control of her anger. The exact details aren't given but sometime after that Nori is adopted by an ambassador in the league of planets and gains an adopted sister named Lara. Lara and Nori are traveling and on a strange planet when they find themselves in trouble.

Menelaus is the King of his people (but a King that's voted in by the people). His lands are the section of his planet that's decided for years (like thousands of years) to stay "low tech" and produce all the food for their planet. The other government on the planet is "high tech" and mainly functions by buying the food from Menelaus' people and using it or selling it off-world for what ever they need. Menelaus has never had an interest in dealing with off-world issues but when he finds an off-world woman that's fiercer than any other woman he's met, Menelaus decides to make her his.

TBH, the first bit of the story was a little confusing...it jumps straight in to Nori going to the "low tech" side of the planet to look for Lara who headed over there without Nori for some reason. You just have to go with it and things clear up as the story unfolds. The first issue Nori encounters is a woman on the road that challenges Nori...apparently so she can get married the next day. Nori doesn't want to fight but when forced in to it, beats the woman quickly and moves on looking for Lara. Since Lara tends to get in trouble a lot Nori shows up just in time to help Lara in a bind. As things are getting straightened out, King Menelaus shows up and there's an instant connection between Nori and Menelaus. Nori doesn't want to acknowledge it though and tries to just get back to the "high tech" side with her sister. Nori finds out the woman on the road was the woman that would have been getting married to the King if she'd beaten Nori. Menelaus didn't like her and was quite happy not to have to marry her and when he sees Nori, he knows that she's who he really wants. Menelaus makes it plain he wants Nori and will try to keep her against her will so Nori makes an escape for her and Lara but breaks some laws about border crossing and is help captive by the "high tech" government, eventually getting tricked back to Menelaus's side of the border. Nori objects to Menelaus wanting to keep her long term but her mating instinct kicks in with Menelaus and they become bond, becoming life-mates. She stays with him for a couple weeks but then makes her escape.

Menelaus searches all over for Nori but can't find her and is torn up by that fact. He can hardly breathe knowing he lost her and realizes just how deep his feelings are for her. Fortunately, there's some intrigue that draws Nori out of hiding. While trying to help someone, Nori gets captured and Menelaus (trying to find Nori) gets captured as well. Once they're reunited (in captivity), it becomes apparent how hard the separation was for both of them but they don't have time for much as there's backstabbing nobles trying to take Menelaus' throne and 2 governments on the brink of war. In an attempt to stop the war and save their people, Nori and Menelaus have many hardships to get past. Once the immediate danger is past, Nori and Menelaus do find time to re-bond (hot, sweaty, moaning re-bonding) as well as some talk and Nori realizes she's in too deep and wont be able to leave Menelaus again. She's freaked out by this because of her worries about her control and hurting people. Menelaus doesn't give a damn and wants her no matter what, sure they can control it. It's pretty cool because they both kick ass on their own during the fighting and it shows just how good of a match they are. Nori just had to stop fighting their connection and Menelaus had to stop trying to force her to stay and instead convince her. They do manage to find a balance and I loved how the story concludes with the war issue straightened out, the bad guys taken down and Menelaus and Nori starting their HEA while bringing their people in to a new age.

I really enjoyed this story. I liked the characters....both Nori and Menelaus are great and I liked a lot of the secondary characters. I kind of wish this would turn in to a series because I'd love to see Lara get a book...as well as the General and Menelaus' sister. I'd recommend this story. Thumbs up. :D

Yeah...no

There is kidnapping, forced seduction, keeping the woman against her will... And then they are in love. In about two days.

Even though the story tried very hard to redeem the power dynamics in the second half, I kept wishing somebody would kindly slit the so called heroes' throat.

Cannot enjoy it. The author made a point at the start of the book that the kingdom has rape laws punished by death. Then she even insists to stop the couple basically before the bedroom doors so that the heroine is asked “do you consent?” The answer is “N-“ as the hero uses his own lips to shut her up and her body’s mating instinct to override her decision. That’s rape.

If the author didn’t want this issue to be so front and center then don’t have the heros first scene be to basically strut in and threaten another with execution for rape but then, a chapter later, do the same himself. She could’ve just played up the cat mating instinct higher and didn’t have the hero’s sister stop them with that question! Why make such a point of the fact that this was not consensual but move on with the story like it’s not even a bad thing?

They continue to have sex like it’s not a big deal what he did? I can’t even read the sex scenes. Since the sex seems to be a big point of this book I don’t know how to continue on.

Lacklustre

We have the typical shifter cop out, "He's an ass and holding me against my will, but he's my mate, so even though I'm supposed to be independent, smart and strong willed, I'll give in to what he wants....it's biology ". Mediocre world building plus 1 dimensional characters equals blah.

Yet another author who needs an editor, (although she claims to have one) Ms. Lucille's work is full of misused homophones, mixed tenses and missing words. Don't bother with this series unless you're being paid to read it.

Nori is once again going after her sister Lara. Lara is a bit naive, extremely curious and adventurous and way too trusting. She expects the best out of everyone and lets her heart guide her. Well her heart gets her into a lot of trouble. So Nori, street wise and a deadly Shakien cat is usually the one to bail Lara out of trouble. This time is no different. Except in the middle of the tense showdown where Nori is about to throw down and kick some butt, King Menelaus enters the bar and calms the situation. And that is how it all starts. King Menelaus must have Nori. Nori just needs to get away from King Menelaus and she goes to extremes to do it.

I loved this book so much!! The characters, the humor, UGH I loved it!!

I love that Nori was feisty. I love that Menelaus loved that she was feisty.

I love that Nori was deadly and feared. I love that Menelaus didn't fear her and knew she would never harm him even when she didn't.

I love their back and forth banter.

Sarcasm was so perfectly written in this book. Sarcasm can be tricky, because if it's not written correctly it can just come off as sounding snotty or childish. Sometimes an author can be trying for funny but it just sort of feels juvenile. Not in this book. It was so well written and perfectly timed I LOLed multiple times reading this book...and it was only 150 pages!! I wanted to read so much more about Nori and King Menelaus. ( Even if I had no idea how to say his name, it was just a jumbled sound in my head Mi-NE-los is usually how I said it although I don't think thats how its pronounced.)

Favorite Quotes

I don't even know if these quotes will be as funny since you sort of have to read the book to understand them. But I don't even care. I'm adding them anyway.

Possible spoilers ahead because I have to give some sort of context for the quotes. Nothing huge is given away just little things you may wish to read on your own.

At one point in the story Nori has to board a spaceship to get Lara back from another situation she was put in. Menelaus is stressed about her going by herself, but circumstances keep him aboard the ship they are traveling on. Nori comes back with more than her sister, but acts as though it was no big deal, she got them, they can go. Later in the book it is being explained what happened to Lara and the other girl during a sort of trial for the man who was responsible.

"The Lady Nori did not know my plight, or abilities. She had no reason to take on so many armed men to get me free when they had already agreed to free the Lady Lara, she did anyway."

Menelaus leaned down beside her and whispered in her ear. "Was there something you forgot to mention?"

"Shh, no talking during peace discourse unless its your turn."

~Truthsayer(I don't think she ever said her name), Menelaus, Nori

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In this next quote, Menelaus had challenged an enemy to a dual but his enemy had no sword. Nori told one of his soldiers to lend their sword, to which they all looked horrified. It was explained that nobody would want a sword back that had been used against the king and that it would need to be melted down and crafted into a new sword to get rid of the taint. So Nori fixed that problem by promising one of the swords hanging on Menelaus's bedroom wall. He had plenty, why not. This quote takes place after the duel.
"Any wounds?" she asked. Looking him over while she walked closer.
"Not to speak of. Was it necessary to give away one of the swords from my father's collection?"
"Don't be a baby about it, your whininess. I'm sure you'll survive without one sword."
"The collection is hundreds of years old."
She placed her hands on her hips and glared at him. "Aren't you supposed to defeat your opponent and then immediately declare your love for the gentle maiden with a kiss, before we go off to live happily every after? I specifically recall Lara mentioning a kiss. Not that the knight would fight and then immediately start harping about his sword collection."
He raised a brow, finished wiping the blood from his sword and sheathed it. "Show me a gentle maiden and I'll see what I can do."
Nori laughed because she couldn't help herself. "You are so going to regret that remark, Your Highness."
"Really," he looked doubtful. "How do you plan to accomplish that, give away another of my antique swords?"
If you are in the mood for a quick little sci-fi read, The Journey’s End is a cute one. The book opens with the heroine chasing after her wayward sister on a backward little world. Her sister is sweet as pie, but has a penchant for getting into trouble. As she’s chasing her, Nori finds some trouble herself and ends up getting attacked by some crazy noblewoman intent on dueling someone. A bit later, she found her little sister in the midst of an attack meaning she had to win a couple more little skirmishes. Little did she know by winning she’d set herself up for a surprising new gig.
Menelaus, King of the province, is having a bad day. Tradition has it that he has to marry the strongest and most battle worthy woman of the land. The one in the running is a vicious, rude, spoiled brat he wants nothing to do with. The newcomer who puts the rude one in her place, well that’s another story. It’s too bad she has no intention of staying on that backward world since he’ll not be letting her go.
When the book begins, I felt like I’d been dumped into the middle of the story and had to play a game of catch up. Once I settled in it was a fun read, having an almost campy feel to it.
Menelaus was a class A jerk in the beginning willing to employ any means to keep his newly found queen, but he had no idea what he had caught by the tail in Nori. She had secrets and unbelievable skills making her one of the most feared creatures in the galaxy. The good news is Menelaus redeems himself and eventually proves himself worthy of his queen.
Traitors of the realm, other kingdoms with less than savory plans, a mercenary with ulterior motives, and even a pirate or two make for plenty of action to keep things moving along. There is also lots and lots of sexy shenaningans to bring a smile or two. It’s a quick, light, and fun read with a fairytale feel to it. Not a bad way to spend a few hours.
The only negative is that I wish it was longer! It was a good read, very minor editing errors, and could have used a little more details which would have helped making it longer too. I loved the main characters and felt I could have connected with them given more time. They were cute, funny, kickass, and of course possessive (which I love in my characters). I also enjoyed neither of them being stupid or should I say making a lot of the stupid decisions that one will find main characters making just for the book to move on.
Enjoyed it.
I quite liked the heroine from the start of the book. She was feisty and strong. I wasn’t sure about the hero at first, but I warmed to him as the heroine did. He was wily and loved her fiercely, which won him a lot of points. There were a few basic grammatical errors in the book, but other than that the pace was good, it flowed well and the storyline was interesting enough. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
Absolutely revolting. It’s honestly starting to scare me how much rape is being white washed in this genre. The main character literally tried to say no when explicitly asked if she consented, and the male lead just kissed her to shut her up. The fact that her own biology was also undermining her doesn’t mean that consent was given. And it gets worse in the next scene. That’s a huge no from me. It terrifies me that this is considered romantic.
Love this series
I love this author, her books are on my automatic buy list. The Distant World Series is a favorite. I guess I missed reviewing the first go round. I love the world building. Lara and Nori are adopted sisters, their father a powerful diplomat with the League. Lara is a beautiful, sweet heart, who's trusting nature get her into trouble. Nori is practical and more like her diplomat adopted father. She is also from a race of fierce cat shifters and is more than capable of getting her sister out of trouble. Lara's latest explore lands them in the territory of a non League Kingdoms. King Menelaus sees his future Queen in Nori. While Nori's cat is on bord with Menelaus's plan, Nori is not, but fighting the mateing pull is near impossible. There is a conspiracy against the King. Nori has a lot on het plate, saving her mates kingdom from corrupt nobles and the tech loving people that share the planet, a charming rogue of a mercenary who has his own agenda, a sister to save from slavers, an over protective diplomat adopted father, who is not happy about how she became queen, a castle sieges, and 25 space Marines who are like older brothers who know some embarrassing childhood stories and aren't afraid to tell them to your mate. A fun fast paced and steamy story.
Another great story by Kelly Lucille.
Shifters, swordsmen, pirates, mercenaries, traitors, space opera at its best.
Nori, is worried when Lara goes off on her own on a strange world. They are both daughters of the League of Planets Ambassador, but Nori is the street savvy one and Lara is the one is la-la land.
Nori saves Lara once again but catches the eye of the local King, Menelaus.
He doesn't want to let her go and does everything he can think of to keep her. It doesn't go well. She has a longstanding hatred of captivity.
Menelaus isn't a bad guy, he is just clueless when it comes to Nori. Meanwhile Nori is shocked when the Mating Dance commences.
Looking forward to Salvage Rights.
