Perfect for fans of:
Forced Proximity
Enemies to lovers
Only one bed

The archaeological discovery of a lifetime... but her sworn enemy is digging it.

Laurel Fletcher didn’t expect her degree in Archaeology to end in the demolition of her confidence by postgrads Nate and Alex. With her family in danger of losing their farm, Laurel resigns herself to dragging Little Willow Farm back into the 21st century and leaves her ambitions of making it as an archaeologist behind. But when an Anglo-Saxon burial site is discovered ten years later in one of their fields, life is breathed back into Laurel’s archaeological dreams.

Leading the dig is none other than Nate Daley, now a world-famous archaeologist, who arrives at Little Willow Farm moody and unimpressed with its cramped living quarters and unpredictability. He wasn’t expecting to be reunited with an academic rival. He wasn’t expecting to adore village life on this family-orientated farm. And he certainly wasn’t expecting to fall in love, especially with someone holding onto a ten year grudge.

Living and working in such close confines, Laurel and Nate strike up an unlikely friendship that gradually blossoms into something deeper. But when Laurel discovers the shattering truth of what really happened ten years ago, Nate must prove his innocence or risk losing his career and Laurel forever.

Featuring dual POV, an academic feud and ‘only one bed’, Carbon Dating is the perfect read for fans of Ali Hazelwood, Rachel Lynn Solomon and Elizabeth Davis.

4.5⭐️ I finished this in one sitting, if that doesn’t tell you how much I loved this I don’t know what will. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The way Jen writes the quirks and mannerisms of the characters made them feel so real and I have so much love for them (especially Nate *swoons*🤭). Oh, and the tension?! INCREDIBLE !!

I loved the family and friendship aspects of this book. ESPECIALLY LAUREL’S OVERPROTECTIVE BROTHERS 😏😏. But also the bond between Laurel and Rebecca- what can I say, I am a sucker for well-written female friendships in a book 🙌🏼🙌🏼

Being an archaeologist myself and having the archaeology aspects in this story ACTUALLY make sense made me so happy. You can tell Jen put a lot of time and research into making this story so much fun and believable.

I cannot wait for her next instalment🤗🤗

A cute, British farm romance read ❤️.

The reason she dislikes him is a good twist revealing at the end. The interactions with his nephew were also written really well and were super sweet. I loved that it was set on a British farm! At a time when British farming is under threat, it’s a brilliant location choice for a book. The spice was also good, probably a bit heavier in description and I was shocked about the praise kink featuring as it read as such a cute, romance read and then BAM ‘Good girl’ hit me out of nowhere 🤣. Not that I mind, I’m down for all those books, I just wasn’t expecting it to come out of Dr Nate’s mouth 😂.

For me I would have loved a bit more depth and I think if it was written in first person with the dual POV it has, it would be an easy 4-5 star.
There was a few bits that happened but had no conclusion which I would have loved more depth on.
For example she has an argument with her Dad, but it’s never resolved apart from being told her Dad will ‘give her the cold war’ for a bit and then it’ll be normal again. She expresses constantly that her family don’t support her or like what she’s done with the farm, but then they are happily accepting of media exposure and developments like veg in a box services without any explanation as to why they’ve changed their tune. The reason for her actions is based on her Mum and losing her and wanting to keep the farm for her and I really feel there could of been a lovely family scene with the Dad, her and two brothers telling her she doesn’t have to do everything and that Mum is proud and they are a family. Just something wholesome to tie it all together as to why they change their tune and her Dad and her resolve conflict.

The other bit I would of loved more developed is the purchasing of adjacent farm fields. She goes on for quite a while about needing to purchase fields of an adjacent farm to protect the village from development properties and she gets an agreement for them but there wasn’t any ending which tells you about whether that all goes through or what she does with the fields. Also how she gets the agreement involves an incident with a character that you never hear of again for the remainder of the story and I would have liked to know what happened to that side character personally as he’d featured prominently.

I did enjoy it, I just would have liked more depth and resolution on those issues as they lead the book quite a lot in the beginning and then I personally didn’t feel they got resolved. Overall though, a cute romance read to enjoy in the British sunshine.

I admit I was apprehensive about this one when I started, especially when people who don't drink hot drinks (AKA me) were called a demon who peels their face off to let it get some airtime at night and someone who keeps baby lamb and bunny bones to make a risotto base out of (I actually almost stopped reading at this point tbh I was that offended 😂) but after this point of the book I actually thoroughly enjoyed it.. me, enjoying an enemies to lovers!

I completely understood why these two were enemies (though it's not revealed until the end to keep you wondering) and enjoyed their relationship blossoming and characters maturing and evolving.

What a debut!!!

Carbon Dating by Jen Smith is my first book in the contemporary romance genre, and what an introduction to the genre it is!

Laurel Fletcher loves her family farm; she would do anything to insure it's survival in a world where land is greedily developed and small business are only expected to last a handful of years. Laurel is determined to keep her farm alive.

After having her love and interest in archaeology dashed at university Laurel put all of her effort into the farm, including rebranding from "Fletcher's Farm" to "Little Willow Farm", expanding into pick your own, having a petting zoo and cafe, becoming a beautiful backdrop for weddings, and hopefully securing more land for their animals and possibly a maize maze in the future.

But Laurel's interest in archaeology is sparked anew when human bones are discovered on her land. Laurel lobbies for her former professor to head the dig at her site, with the ever hopeful thought of prehaps being able to get her own hands dirty when the team arrives. All wishful thinking seems to disappear when Dr Nate Daley steps off the bus with the undergrads, and is once again forced into Laurel's life.

Nate seems to have little to no recollection of interacting with Laurel Fletcher at university. She was a few years his junior, and aside from a few brief memories of Laurel liking Nate's best friend and being let down by said friend, Dr Daley has no idea why Laurel Fletcher holds a burning grudge and hatred towards him.

Of course, both Nate and Laurel poke at one-another from the start that develops and evolves as the story progresses in a most satisfying way.

I truly loved watching the two sides of this story play out! There is miscommunication and misunderstanding on both sides which illustrates how there is always more than one side to any story. You can see how the characters develop their friendship from the start of the narrative and before, off page, to a decade earlier at university.

This book had me grinning ear-to-ear, giggling, and at times wishing the utmost harm upon THAT particular character. I loved feeling the build in the narrative, the hopeful whistfulness of the characters, and the annoyance of them just not doing what I wanted them to do.

I look forward to seeing what else Jen Smith creates; if this book is any indication then I know I will enjoy what ever comes next!!

What an incredible book! This dual-POV contemporary romance kept me turning the pages into the early hours of the morning, as I simply did not want to put this book down!⁣

I love romance, archeology, and animals (look at that cute cover!), and as soon as I heard about this book, I just knew I needed to read it, and I am so glad I did! ⁣

Jen Smith’s writing truly jumps right off of the page in such a spectacular way! Her characters all feel like such real people, and the character development throughout is very strong. From backstory, to misunderstandings, to current emotions shifting and deepening, it is so clear how much thought Ms. Smith put into each and every aspect of this book, and I truly felt like I was right there in the world with the characters. ⁣

(Possible Spoilers!):⁣
Laurel and Nate truly bring out the best in one another, and watching their love story unfold was so special. Though the journey isn’t always easy, and there are certain things in their history that need to come to the forefront, be addressed, and figured out, these two are able to work through it and the truth is revealed, and what develops is such a beautiful and sweet romance. They respect one another, support each another, and so many, many moments had me smiling and swooning. I so hope to see them again, and see their story continue, in a future book (or books!)! ⁣

I highly recommend this romance novel, and can’t wait to read what Jen Smith writes next!⁣

Thank you so much to Serendipity Fiction for the e-ARC of this novel, it is incredible and amazing! All opinions expressed in this review are my own.⁣

For a quick read cheesy romance book, it wasn’t so bad. I’ve read others that have been particularly underwhelming, especially related to archeology, but this was fairly fun. I liked that the archaeology aspects were a *little* bit more realistic, compared to some other archaeology romances I’ve read, as that was what I was reading it for more than the romance. I found the first half where it was a bit more academic-y to be more interesting. I’m not entirely sure what the timeline was but through the middle there were times where the archaeology dropped away to allow more romance in the plot, overall it was very tropey, as expected, I can’t really tell if it was insta-love because again I wasn’t sure of the timeline. I appreciated how it looked into toxic masculinity a bit and tackled that. It felt like the plot with the farm sabotage was a bit of a filler, because it was interesting but didn’t massively go anywhere or contribute much to the story after it was featured. The characters were alright, there wasn’t a lot of depth to them, I felt like there was more depth to Nate than Laurel at times and I wish she would’ve stood tf up because if anybody had spoken to me that way I wouldn’t have had it. Lucia was a huge pick me and Alex was plain toxic, and although it was discussed, it did feel like nobody did anything about it aside from Nate. I also wish Laurel had just stopped and listened- not sure im a fan of the miscommunication trope. Honestly there were a lot of tropes in here lol, and the author described the way the MMC smelled three times by using weather related adjectives, which I noticed… but it was a silly and fun quick read, overall it was alright.

This was a fun, quick read about an ex-archaeologist who now is desperate to save her family's farm and the man who did her wrong over a decade ago when she was an undergraduate and he was a graduate-student. He re-enters her life, and they agree to put everything in the past, as adults often do lol. However, as they continue a dig for hopefully something fruitful to get the family farm on the map, this forced workplace proximity begins to build loads of sexual and romantic tension between the two.

I appreciated the commentary on what it was like for Laurel to be a young woman in a predominantly cishetmale field, and the grief and shame she feels in leaving that passion behind. The defeat you feel when you decide to give up on a career that you had so much hope for, that's ... crushing. However, that care and energy was then poured into her family farm, which you can clearly feel how meaningful that work is to her too. I really liked the character of Laurel, and that even if this wouldn't have been her first choice, she doesn't half-ass anything and once she makes a decision, she stands strong in that conviction.

I recognize that people *hate* miscommunication in romcoms, but I think it fit well in this narrative, and that it was executed well, making sense for the two characters. Anyway, I loved the epilogue & their happily ever after hehehe.

This would be a great beach read, I highly recommend it!

I loved this book - having just finished it, I’m filled with warmth and joy right now and desperate to find out what happens next! It’s a ‘kind of’ traditional love story but with a strong female protagonist who is just fantastic and inspirational. Having grown up in the countryside, in a farming community, it resonated with me and made me laugh out loud many a time! It also made me get a lump in my throat, at times. I can’t wait to find out what’s next for the wonderful characters - read this book!

Heart-warming but slightly cheesy romance with some steam.
I liked how it encapsulated the struggles of British farms and a warning, there is sexism and some borderline sexual harassment.
Not by the main male lead, he's wholesome!
Unfortunately, some of the archaeology knowledge and terminology were not the most accurate, and it was a little bit too glamorised.
Just my opinion as someone who works in archaeology.
But overall, it was a pleasant, cute romance that I consumed very quickly.

Fun romance with all the quirks.

I adored this.

I know nothing about archeology or farming but I was thoroughly entertained. ❤️

It was silly, and very British and a little cheesy but I loved how it wasn't so serious and yet had some very serious themes of sexism and academic rivalry.

You'll love it if

💩 You don't mind a little cheesy humour
❤️‍🔥 You like a slowburn to steam
❤️ You like your FMCs smart
🪏 You're looking for a different romance setting

Well this was a huge bore. The writing felt stilted, there was no banter or tension or any attraction whatsoever between the main characters and it seemed like they went from hate to love with the snap of a finger. I also wish we would have seen the FMCs issues with her family resolved instead of unnecessary romantic drama.

Absolutely devoured this book. Loved the dynamic between Laurel and Nate. I’m a bit of a geek, so I thoroughly enjoyed how detailed the archeological descriptions were. Really well thought out and I was gutted when I got to the end!!

Everyone in this book sucked and they all hated each other. Barely anything was resolved, and if it was resolved, it was haphazardly patched with a dollar-store band-aid.

This second chance, hate to lovers is a cute and fun read- so much so I read it one sitting!

Laurel is a strong sunshine female, despite the lack of acknowledgment from family is a boss! Nate gives off major golden retriever vibes! In order for these two to actually become lovers they have to get over some obstacles!

Jen writings is great and pulls you in from the first page! The character development is well executed, from backstory, misunderstandings to current emotions deepening!

Overall, a witty and funny in places! The romance also felt real to life!

I knew from the very beginning of this book that I was going to enjoy this one! I ended up reading it in less than 24 hours and had to force myself to sleep, otherwise, I would have been up till the early hours reading. It was so cute, light-hearted, and just a very enjoyable time! I loved the whole premise of this story and loved that it combines a lot of things I love when it comes to romance novels.

Told in dual POV, we really get to know our main characters, Laurel and Nate. Both are incredibly realistic and relatable characters with amazing development. I loved their connection, and while there is some miscommunication, it was done really well, and I actually didn't mind it as much as I normally would. I also really liked the side characters, especially Rebecca and Nate's friends!

This was a fantastic debut novel and one I absolutely recommend if you're looking for a fun romance with enemies to lovers and only one bed!

I appreciate romances like this where the will-they-won't-they doesn't hinge on a contrived miscommunication or blurb parties' crippling insecurity.

Unfortunately, some of the author's other choices made this tricky for me to get through - like referring to the main characters by their first and last names for the entire first half, or reusing "beautiful" as an adjective to describe a woman, her lips, a man, and his nipple all in the same scene.
