Poisoner's Vengeance

Rate this book
A nun with a thirst for revenge. A demon out to clear his name. A bargain that might destroy them.

Poison-brewing nun Annette has one goal in to be awarded the top of her class, and with it, gain her freedom. When a new novitiate steals the award, her dream turns toward revenge.

Her retribution? Teaming up with a demon to secretly sabotage the abbey’s recertification.

When Rigo, the abbey’s demon prisoner of twenty years, offers Annette his assistance, she can’t help accepting. All he wants in exchange is his freedom–and the ancient relic Annette has accidentally bound to herself. Though the relic, too, believes in her cause and nurtures her wrath, its self-proclaimed holiness doesn’t quite add up, leaving her unsure who to trust.

To untangle the web of lies and secrets lying beneath the abbey, Annette must decide. Trust the ancient relic, a symbol of her faith, who claims to have her best interests at heart? Or trust the demon–the monster–she was taught to fear, whose intense gaze and keen observations make her feel seen like never before?

POISONER’S VENGEANCE is an adult fantasy mystery novel with a slow burn enemies to lovers romance, dangerous bargains, and an isolated gothic fantasy setting.

“Mother, forgive me,” I murmured. “I feel it only prudent to warn you that I intend to step sideways out of the warmth of your glory.”

── .✦✩°𓏲⋆ 3.25 stars

⤿ this book had the potential to be one of my best reads of 2025 and initially i thought that that’s exactly how it would be. however, with my stellar luck as usual, the book also fell flat by the end. additionally, i feel a little misled by the book being marketed as ‘romantic fantasy’, when at best, it was a gothic mystery with paranormal elements in it. and that doesn’t exactly classify as romantic fantasy. and with that being said, despite it’s few shortcomings, i actually enjoyed the book because there was never a dull moment in it.

summary

⤿ Sister Annette Boodram is a nun of the Moriah Abbey and has dedicated her life towards serving the abbey and their Mother. However, when she’s wrongfully deprived of an award, she decides to step out of grace and take revenge on the Abbess with the help of an unusual ally – a demon who had been kept captive in the Abbey for a long time. Now, with formation of an unholy alliance with equally unholy motives, Annette and Rigo set out to right the wrongs that have been done to them, only to discover that the Abbey’s past isn’t as clean as it is portrayed to be.

Also, it turns out that they’re aren’t the only ones out for revenge.

characters

⤿ ⬪ Annette Boodram – i loved her. A LOT.
“Take what’s mine again and see what happens.”

see what i mean? she’s a nun, but kinda wicked. and i loved that. her moral compass didn’t run according to the standards of a person dedicating their lives to selflessness, and that was honestly so refreshing. she was kind, brave and caring, but she was also highly ambitious, a little bit vindictive and extremely possessive of what she considers hers. and that was HOT.

the thing that i loved the most about her was how realistically she was fleshed out with her insecurities, desires to fit in and then giving up, her love for books and solitude (me coded) and her reactions to any situation. annette wasn’t by any standards a perfect, pretty protagonist. no. she was imperfect, rude at times and made some really weird decisions but that’s what makes her likeable to me all the more.

the only thing i wished i got to see more of was her wickedness. she had the potential to delve a little deeper into her darker side during her face off against the antagonists, but she remained pretty much of a good and heroic character. and while it’s a good thing, i just felt we should have seen more of her ‘idgaf about anyone as much as a sister should’ attitude more. also, for someone who’s portrayed to be as intelligent as her, i expected her to figure out the betrayal a lot quicker than she did.

Rigo Acosta – he’s a demon…who’s a golden retriever. now, don’t get me wrong. i do love me a good golden retriever mmc, but when it comes to a demon, i expect a certain level of wickedness, ruthlessness and darkness. i mean you’re a demon for fuck’s sake! you can’t be a complete ray of sunshine?

it wasn’t that i didn’t like him, i did. he was really kind, sweet and adorably boyish to annette. he also helped her A LOT and was always there for her. ALWAYS. but that’s it.

for a demon, he was pretty tame and didn’t actually have any demonic qualities in him. which was…disappointing because it made his character bland with no dimension except for a good guy trapped in a demon’s body. kaylie smith did it right in Phantasma where blackwell was both a wicked devil and sweetheart to ophelia. i’m sorry but i like my men a LOT little morally-grey.

the only moment Rigo ate a little was:
“Listen to me,” he said in a low and dangerous tone. “That woman will not touch you again if I have anything to do with it. Understand?”

the plot & romance

⤿ the plot of this book was really well fleshed out with the slow buildup to the gradual unfolding of events. the mystery also developed in a great pace that is slow enough to build your curiosity and yet enough fast enough to always keep you hooked for more. also, the entire gothic and dark setting of the abbey was absolute chef’s kiss. it further heightened the mystery plot and raised the stakes for the characters, making you actually feel their horror, excitement or pity. and though the twist was extremely predictable, it was still fun to watch annette put all the pieces together and face the final confrontation with the antagonists.

now, talking about the romance of the book…well. um.

idk how to exactly artituclate my thoughts here because the romance went from ‘i dont trust him’ to ‘i trust him with my life’ within the span of one chapter or two. like how?? my girl wasn’t even nice to him most of the times and suddenly she longs for him?? HUH??? this isn’t what i mean when i say i love enemies to lovers.

the pacing of the romance was too weird and didn’t at all feel balanced. there wasn’t any chemistry, angst, spark or push and pull between them. another reason why i think the romance didn’t work out was because the character of Rigo wasn’t properly fleshed out. we practically know nothing about him or his past – which led to the lack of his individuality.

as a result, the romance didn’t click well for me because i couldn’t see them connect. and the smut wasn’t phenomenal either. it was good but definitely didn’t reach my expectations.

all in all, despite the few flaws in characterization and the romance subplot, i truly enjoyed the book A LOT. i would definitely recommend it to you if you are looking for a quick and interesting read with a gothic background and elements of mystery and paranormal in it.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Skull & Violet Books and Talia Greer for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

📜┆ ARC ⤿ Skull & Violet Books, Talia Greer & NetGalley
💌┆ Pub Date ⤿ 03/31/25

Poisoner’s Vengence is a decent and easily digestible read where we follow Sister Annette as she seeks justice and an explanation when all her life spent efforts and her rightful class title is stolen overnight. She begins questioning Mother Vannessa for her mysterious behavior and choices, Narissa’s sudden arrival and subject of favoritism, a relic who wishes to help her right wrongs, and the mysterious demon hidden under the abbey’s archives.

❝ It was that faith, not Mother Vanessa, that had made me who I was, and that loyalty was what I would cling to during these dark times. I needed the Chief Poisoness award to continue along the next step of my life, and if dirt-damned Mother Vanessa wouldn't give it to me, I would find another way to take what was mine. ❞

Annette Boodram — a novice sister of the Holy Order at Moriah Abbey, who is awaiting her ceremonial profession and title to pursue her dream of being able to serve the Mother freely from the confines of her abbey. Annette is headstrong, passionate & introspective. Despite her strong thoughts & personality, her pursuit to gain back what was rightfully hers was valid and it didn’t strike me as cruel at all. As Annette strived and worked for 15 years in order to gain the Chief Poisoness position, which she wanted but nothing to gain with the independence to travel and freedom while continuing to serve her mission outside the vast world.

Rigo Acosta — the two-decade-long demon prisoner under Moriah Abbey’s archives who wishes to prove himself innocent of the charges that were sanctioned upon him. Despite being the unholy demon that was described throughout the story, Rigo felt like a normal human. The only quality that made him a demon was that he was born as one. Wished he had more depth other than being just a demon and the MMC.

*ੈ✩‧₊˚ Fantasy & Romance

For a fantasy book, this was not heavily dosed with the genre. Instead, it felt more like a paranormal mystery, with subtle touches of fantasy rather than an overwhelming amount of it. Fantasy elements in the book were present however, it felt more of an accent rather than the story’s driving force.

❝ I shouldn't have wanted him. He was a demon, the very type of monster I'd been taught to fear. But he'd been nothing but kind to me, and I was slowly learning that not everything I'd learned at the abbey was true. ❞

As for the romance, this book was marketed as an adult romance, slow-burn & enemies-to-lovers yet it didn’t quite click with the romance these two had. Yes, the attraction between the characters did take a while (60% of the book) but the connection/chemistry between Annette and Rigo felt lacking with how fast the romance build-up happened afterwards. The latter part of the book did display and share the cute connection between them and I did enjoy this but I just wished we could have more shared scenes & earlier development for how they gained attraction towards one another.

❝ Intense faith doesn't necessarily make someone a good person. ❞

To sum it up, I enjoyed this book as it had a great atmosphere, which kept me hooked till the very end. That said, it didn’t quite match the tags it was marketed under, which left me expecting something a bit different. Still, the book had engaging writing, and even with the slight mismatch in its marketing tags, I found The Poisoner’s Vengence an easy and worthwhile read.

poisoner's revenge has my absolute favorite trope of all time: demon/incorporeal nightmare creature camps in the protagonist's mind, sukuna style. unfortunately, this is the first time i've ever not liked a book with this trope.

sometimes, a book is just a victim of overmarketing. this was honestly pretty average as far as romantasies go, but if you say "adult romantic fantasy novel with a slow burn enemies to lovers romance perfect for fans of ava reid" and then not deliver any of that, it automatically becomes awful, regardless of the quality of the content itself.

first of all, this is not "adult" in any definition of the word. if adult exclusively refers to the exactly one sex scene, then sure, but if you consider the complexity of the narrative or maturity of the characters, then absolutely not. one thing i really liked about this book is that the plot moves forward through annette's active choices. this might be a basic thing, but recently, i've been reading a lot of books where random things happen to the characters rather than characters actively navigating their lives, and annette was very refreshing to me for that reason. unfortunately, almost every decision she made had the innate stupidity of the first person to die in a slasher film. somehow, it worked out for her, but i can't suspend disbelief that much. for example, her trust in the relic? she just asked it "are you holy" and it said "yeah sort of" and that's all the vetting that occurred before she gave him her body to possess. alright. and this was not a one-off thing, either. she basically did the same thing with the demon, except she hated him for slightly longer.

not only is this not adult, it's also not romantasy either. i'm being absolutely serious. that is not the genre. this is fantasy with a mystery subplot, and somehow, the two mcs end up together, but no romantic development takes place within the novel. it's slow burn in the sense that it takes until the halfway point for her to think that he's cute, and then suddenly she loves him near the end, but no explanation of how we get from point a to point b. i understand how two people in their situation can fall in love (both isolated for years before finding a friend in each other) but i want to know why annette and rigo, specifically, care for each other, and there's barely anything there. this is the first romantasy book where the romance was sidelined in favor of other storylines and it actually detracts from the experience. and then it's not enemies to lovers either. truly, the marketing for this book is atrocious. not everything has to be enemies to lovers, i promise. she dislikes him in the beginning, and he's indifferent, but that's not enemies, that's the relationship you have with your annoying neighbor. just say forbidden romance or something!! and this is very, very nitpicky of me, but i absolutely hate the whole "i shouldn't have wanted him. he was a demon, the very type of monster i'd been taught to fear" thing almost every romance fantasy has written verbatim these days. like you do. so now what? stand on it? it's so whiny and insufferable.

and finally, the writing was just underwhelming, lacking in gravitas and complexity. there are many instances of annette having an emotionally torturous experience, but you can't feel any of it because the writing is too simplistic. regrettable because annette is entirely motivated by emotion, and i wasn't able to relate to her on that level.

i received an advance copy from netgalley in exchange for a review.

I had initially anticipated Poisner’s Vengeance to follow the familiar, well-worn path of many romantic fantasies, particularly with the trope of a nun and a demon. How wonderfully wrong I was. Annette, the protagonist, is a beautifully layered character—vulnerable yet fiercely strong in her own way. She doesn't stand out like the typical “I’m not like other girls” character; instead, she is defined by an overwhelming drive for self-preservation that makes her all the more captivating.

Her quest is not one of noble ideals or grand sacrifices. Annette fights only for herself, and it’s this raw, unapologetic self-interest that pulled me into her journey. The convent she calls home is filled with young women raised in a religion centered on The Mother, a deity who was betrayed, poisoned, and resurrected. Annette’s ambition is sharp and clear, but it is tempered by a naïveté born of her upbringing, and that vulnerability made her all the more endearing. I adored how Talia, the author, breathed life into Annette’s character, making her both intelligent and naïve, a testament to her sheltered world.

Although I often find myself predicting plot twists, Poisner’s Vengeance skillfully sidestepped my expectations, delivering surprises at every turn. My only small critique would be the relationship between Annette and Rigo. Their connection, though slow-burning, left me craving a bit more chemistry, more spark, and perhaps a little more playful banter between them. A glimpse into Rigo’s point of view could have provided deeper insight into their growing bond, enriching the romance that, for me, felt slightly underdeveloped.

All in all, Poisner’s Vengeance was a stunning read, an evocative romantic fantasy with a gothic atmosphere. If you’ve fallen in love with books like Phantasma, Nocitacdia, or One Dark Window, this will sweep you off your feet. It’s a tale of revenge, ambition, and the price of betrayal, and I couldn’t put it down, eager to uncover the twists that lay ahead.

Age Rating For It-
16 or 17+ because there is some violence and the fmc gets hurt and punished because of some of the things she does, and it is a tad bit dark and gothic too. There is also an opened door scene near the end of the book that is explicit and some kissing and stuff as well.

Revenge

Quotes-

“I’ve been trying to show you how I feel all this time. You’ve captivated me, Annette. Every time I think I know you, you surprise me again.”

“When his hand slipped into my own a moment later, I did not pull away.”

Thoughts/Would I Recommend This?-
I really enjoyed this book a lot! I loved the dark gothic kind of vibe I got from it and the whole revenge plot and everything. I do wish it had dived more into the whole poison master aspect of this book and I wish that there had been some more depth to the revenge plot like the instant hatred I kind of get because I do know in some cases you can just instantly dislike/hate someone, but I wish there was more depth to that instant hatred like if they had more things that Narissa did to make her dislike her or stuff. All in all, though, I really enjoyed this book and would totally recommend people read it!

Thanks to NetGalley and Skull & Violet Books for providing me with an ARC of Poisoner's Vengeance by Talia Greer (publication date 31 March 2025) in exchange for my honest opinion.

A book with autistic FMC.. that's what intrigued me the most to read this book. It didn't disappoint. I loved the FMC, her though process, her no nonsense attitude, her difficulty to understand and react according to social cues was interesting to read. The plotline reminded me of 'one dark window ' . To me it book read like young adult.. the romance content was very low and it was more like strangers to lovers, I enjoyed the suspense, gothic, thriller aspects of the book more. The world building was absolutely brilliant and well paced. Overall, if you are looking for a gothic thriller fantasy with a dash of romance.. this is your book.

First up, thank you to Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read this ahead of publishing.

I thought the synopsis of this book showed great promise. I was really intrigued by the concept of a poison-brewing nun working together with a demon to sabotage her abbey. Also having a black autistic FMC sounded interesting and representation matters. Hoewever I feel like this was NOT the way to go.
The characters:

The FMC, Annette, was simply unlikable. Her whole personality is "I wanted this award and I didn't get it. Now I'm mad." That's it. She does not have any character growth because she doesn't need to.
She wants to sabotage her abbey out of malicious intent and then somehow she stumbles upon a bigger conspiracy and her betrayal of her own abbey is therefore validated. She is insecure in the beginning and just as insecure in the end because she gets everything she wants. She doesn't need to evolve because everything ends up the way she wants. Also it was really unnecessary that she's a poisoness because she never puts that to use.

The demon, Rigo, is boring. I was hoping for a little morally grey, grumpy MMC and I got bland vanilla. There is nothing interesting about him. He was wrongfully imprisoned and instantly likes Annette. HIS one personality trait is literally the same as Annettes. He knows her for all of 5 minutes and decides it's his duty to help her get her award back. And as a B plot he also wants to clear his name. But he HIMSELF always states that getting her that award is his first priority.

The relic... I don't even know. It was giving nightmare of One dark window but from wish. He is ALSO really boring. And as the book progressed he "hid" more and more.

The villianess... came out of nowhere.

The plot:
At least 70-80% of the book was simply build up where barely anything happened. And then we rushed through the last 20% where EVERYTHING happened.
Honestly I don't have any other things to say about this. I felt The whole thing was just a little less than what I expected. I was expecting more actual morally grey things, maybe actual use of poison, some bigger odds, bigger mistakes she makes, just more .

Another thing I didn't like at all was the spice. I just felt it was extremely unnecessary. The whole "romance" plotpoint shouldn't have existed. Maybe leaving that out and therefore focussing more on the rest of the story woud've made this better. One of my biggest problems was the way Annettes describes the Rigo. She literally says, that he reminds her of a stick insect... I feel like it was put in because that's what people are reading, that's what goes viral. But not every book needs romance or spice. Sometimes it just doesn't fit into the book and this was one of those times.

All in all I am really thankful that I got to read this ahead of time. And I feel like the story showed great promise. It was an original, interesting idea. However I think the way it was done was just not very thought out. It could've been SO GOOD but sadly it wasn't.

“Mother, forgive me,” I murmured. “I feel it only prudent to warn you that I intend to step sideways out of the warmth of your glory.”

Are you ready for a darkly captivating tale of revenge, secrets, and the intoxicating power of forbidden knowledge? From the first page, I was intrigued by Greer's lush prose, the intricate plot, and the complex characters that populate this morally ambiguous world. This book is a crafted exploration of justice, morality, and the lengths one will go to for vengeance.

At the heart of the story is Siora. Haunted by a tragic past and fueled by a burning desire for retribution. Greer portrays Siora's internal struggle, her unwavering focus on her goal, and the sacrifices she's willing to make to achieve it. She's a complex and compelling character, one that you'll find yourself both rooting for and questioning as the story unfolds.

The world Greer has created is richly detailed and utterly immersive. From the bustling city streets to the shadowy corners where secrets fester, every location feels vibrant and alive.

The supporting characters in "Poisoner's Vengeance" are equally compelling, each with their own motivations and secrets. The interactions between these characters are filled with tension, suspicion, and the constant threat of betrayal.

Greer's prose paints vivid pictures with her words. She has a gift for capturing the nuances of human emotion, conveying the unspoken feelings and hidden motivations that drive her characters. The dialogue is sharp and witty, adding a touch of dark humour to the story. The pacing is balanced, keeping you engaged without ever feeling rushed. The suspense builds gradually, culminating in a satisfying and emotionally resonant climax.

"Poisoner's Vengeance" is an exploration of morality, justice, and the consequences of one's choices. It delves into the gray areas of right and wrong, challenging readers to question their own perceptions of justice. Greer doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of human nature, but she also explores the themes of resilience, loyalty, and the enduring power of hope.

My qualm with the book is that it’s more of a gothic mystery than a romantasy, however I did really enjoy the read otherwise! It was a dark and delicious read that will keep you guessing until the very end. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a novel that will challenge your perceptions and leave you breathless.

Thank you to the author for an eARC in exchange for my honest review.

My rating 3.25/5
Spice level very mild there is a moment talking about sex
Slow burn
Enemies to Lovers
Only one bed
Demonic bargains

Following the journey of Annette, a nun with a dream and a promise for freedom from the Abbey she is currently at but when all of this dream fades and becomes a nightmare, she decides that she must reclaim her promise with any action necessary. Forming an unlikely alliance with a relic and a demon locked away downstairs.

This book took me a couple of chapters to get into but once I did get invested in the storyline, I found Rigo a fun and interesting character! I do wish to know more about his backstory and just further information about him as he was my favourite character in the end. Annette, was interesting to a point but I did wish to know more about her poison expertise and being able to use that more.

But I do think I will read more books by this author as I did enjoy the book and hope there is another story following Annette as I want to see more of her journey!

Talia Greer’s newest release is a romantic fantasy that leans more toward the gothic side, with some fantastical, darkish, and paranormal elements. The story is told through Annete’s POV as she navigates her way to being awarded the top of her class to gain her freedom. She does this through unorthodox methods—a demon imprisoned for 20 years and a relic that speaks within her that she entrusts.

The story is not as long as most romantasy books and has some interesting plot themes. The romance noted wasn’t too heavy compared to what I usually read. I felt this was more of a mystery type of story.

Poisoner’s Vengeance by Talia Greer is a dark and atmospheric read with strong gothic thriller vibes and just a touch of romance. Annette, a poison-brewing nun with a serious grudge, teams up with a demon to sabotage her abbey and it’s just as twisted and clever as it sounds.

The romance definitely takes a backseat here, leaning more toward strangers-to-lovers, but honestly, I was more drawn to the suspense and the eerie, slow-burn tension that builds throughout. The world-building is a major highlight, rich, moody, and perfectly paced to pull you in without overwhelming you.

If you’re in the mood for a YA-feeling gothic fantasy with revenge, dark bargains, and a dash of forbidden magic, this one’s definitely worth picking up.

No, this didn’t work at all — I’m sorry. It lacks in all the important things: world building, character development and a stringent plot. Both the MC and the MMC are so incredibly dull I wasn’t sure I wanted them to win.

Annette is becoming a nun, gets snubbed on a title and turns bitter and whiny. She meets a demon who is rather dull but he is kind to her so she falls in love. Inexplicably he thinks she’s the bee’s knees too, although none of them really seem to have a particularly deep or interesting personality.

Warning for those who expect a romantasy — it’s not. It’s some kind of romantic literature with a twist of the religious and mystical. But it doesn’t quite have the world building required for it to be fantasy. And it doesn’t have the promised slow burn or tension for it to be romantasy.

Write me a book about the brother and I’m there for it. The concept isn’t bad, the execution just needs some work.

An ARC was provided to me for an honest review. This is honest and my review. Thanks for the opportunity!

Overall this was an easy book to read and I enjoyed the FMC. What really threw me off was that this is marketed as a Romance/fantasy with enemies to lovers. Unfortunately this is wrong lol and should definitely be fixed prior to release. The FMC and MMC barely have a relationship and it all happened so fast and seemed rushed and this was towards the 2nd half/ending of the book. The relationship just seemed surface level and didn’t really make any sense. This definitely is more of a Fantasy with a mystery subplot and a dash of romance! I still recommend everyone giving this a try! It just let me down cause this storyline wasn’t what I was expecting.

I didn't quite know what to expect going into this, but what a pleasant and exciting read! Annette was left abandoned at the steps of Moriah Abbey as a child where she was raised for the last 15 years. She never truly fit in with her peers, being ostracized for her off-putting nature and aloofness so she dedicates herself to her studies to achieve the title of Chief Poisoness, where she will be able to leave the abbey and travel abroad. As Annette is prepared to receive her award, she is outraged when it is given to someone else. Bent on revenge, she develops a plan to sabotage the abbey and steal back the award she has worked for her entire life. She encounters a sentient ring, a relic, that helps her in her plan as well as a forgotten demon prisoner in the basement of the abbey. With their help, she discovers there are more secrets and dark history within the abbey involving murder plots, evil demons, and a much bigger world than she ever thought.

I really didn't have any idea of where this book was going to go when I started it, and I couldn't put it down until I finished! I really liked Annette as a character, at first I was surprised at how her morals revolved around her personal goals in an almost villainous sort of way with being raised in an abbey, but she actually is a strict rule follower who does show kindness-unless someone gets in the way of her goals, of course. She is naive and selfish, but also intelligent and cunning. A very interesting combination that was very fun to read.

The pacing of the book was excellent, many times I looked at the percentage I had left and thought how was the author going to unfold and tie all these ends together?! But Talia Greer was able to tell a compelling and full story that was satisfying all the way through, and by the end of the book I felt so sad it ended but like all my questions were answered. The plot was so fun and dark and what an interesting setting that I had never experienced before in a book. Instead of dark academia, it was more dark gothic church. And I was so pleasantly surprised by the romance and spice!!

My only gripe was that I wish we had been able to see more of Annette being a top-of-her-class poisoner, especially because the title and plot revolve so much around that. I feel like the only time we really see her use her talent is in identifying some ingredients in tea, I wish we could have seen her knowledge of poisons been used more. She was also painfully naive at times, like after discovering that basically everything she knew was a lie and SO MANY red flags from those she trusted, and yet it takes her basically until someone else explains what's happening for her to realize what's going on. And only because this conflicts with it being pointed out many times that she is clever and intelligent. However, I don't think this takes away much from the book as a whole.

I do hope I get to see more of Annette and Rigo, but also I feel this book is complete just as a standalone! I had so much fun reading, I recommend this for people who love dark academia, demons, a touch of gothic horror, and a morally grey fmc who isn't afraid to do whatever it takes to get her revenge.

An ARC review

Enter Annette, a nun with a somewhat morally grey character. Her whole mission in this book is to seek revenge on her abbess to correct a wrong that she thinks has been made towards her. I would describe her as morally grey since these wouldn't be the typical "good-doings" of a nun. Also she seems really naive in her relic - from the reader's point of view, it was very obvious from the very beginning that the relic was demonic, and not a good one.

The book is short, and the “romance” kind of comes out of it really left field. There’s not much development between the two characters that would lead one to think this would even end in romance? This book would of been better if romance was kept out of it.

Supernatural/Paranormal Fiction . Gothic . Horror . Nuns & Demons . Internal Struggle . Morally Grey MMC . Dark Secrets & Lies . Ancient Relics . Mystery . Revenge . Captivation . Forbidden Romance . Forced Proximity . Morally Corrupt

"Then one day, a lonely nun with vengeance in her heart stumbled upon me by accident. With a single touch, I knew her darkest desires and I promised them to her on a platter." (pg 163)

Annette struggled with her morality, her own inner demons always at the forefront from the trauma of her abandoment as a child to her feelings of being ostracized and not belonging.

"Intense faith doesn't necessarily make someone a good person." (pg 127)

She's a novice with hopes to become a sister of her Order and dreams of being awarded the prestigious title, Chief Poisoner. It's what she has worked for her entire life in order to leave the abbey and to be free. However, her hopes come crashing down, changes are happening, and she does not do well with change. With further isolation, she is filled with rage and jealousy. A burning need for vengeance consumes her.

She discovers a relic that speaks to her in her mind and has certain powers, and an imprisoned demon that she's made to befriend and bargain with. She accepts their help to deliver revenge upon those who took away her just rewards. But at what cost? What was the alternative?

"The demon can present as kind, helpful, and selfless... they are deceptive and conniving. They should never be trusted." (pg 49)

"I had two choices: trust him, or let everything I'd worked so hard for fall apart." (pg 172)

Dark secrets and deep desires unfurl as her world is turned upside down.

"Both forbidden and comforting in a tantalizing way. Being this close to him and hearing his voice but not seeing his face engendered a certain degree of intimacy." (pg 128)

Started off a little slow for me. It picked up a little bit, but was more medium paced after that initial dryness.

Annette doesn't fit the stereotypical nun persona that we all know. Sure, she is devout, but she has strong personal desires and social difficulties and doesn't seem to be keen about suppressing them. And like most humans, her insecurities make her vulnerable to being manipulated. Her desire for vengeance also clouds her judgment.

This book rides the morally grey line, where definitions and acts of good and evil are blurred.

Interesting read, thought-provoking. A little bit of horror mixed with fantasy, romance, mystery, and thriller.

📚 Poisoner’s Vengeance - Talia Greer
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 - Exceeded my expectations
🌶️ - .02ish (if that’s a thing 😂)

Alright, buckle the hell up because Poisoner’s Vengeance by Talia Greer is an absolute ride. We’ve got nuns, poisons, demons, and a revenge plot 🫣 (basically everything you need for some grade-A chaos)

So our main girl (a nun) Annette is stuck at the abbey but she’s not spending her days praying and being holy She’s out here mixing poisons like she’s running a medieval meth lab 👩‍🔬 Her whole plan? Be the top of her class so she can actually get the hell out of this place. But, of course, life decides to be a dick, and some new novitiate waltzes 💃🏻 in and steals her top spot. Annette? PISSED YALL 🤬 So instead of, I don’t know, handling this maturely, she goes full “I’m going to ruin this heauxs life” mode. 🫢

Enter Rigo. He is NOT your friendly neighborhood priest but instead a damn demon 😈 who’s been chilling (or more like rotting) in the abbey for 20 years. He wants out, Annette wants revenge, and suddenly they’re making shady-ass deals 🤝 But wait, it gets messier. There’s this ancient relic 💍and somehow it’s bound to Annette, which means she’s probably got bigger problems than just one annoying novitiate. But does she care? Not really 🙅‍♀️ because she’s too busy making poor life choices with a demon.

Speaking of Rigo, let’s be real—this romance is the definition of unhealthy but hot as hell 🔥 Enemies-to-lovers? Check ✔️ That I hate you but also maybe I wanna kiss you against a wall energy? Double check ✔️✔️ Oh, you know it’s coming. And Annette? She’s probably going to swear up and down that she’s not into him while actively making dumbass deals with demons 🥴

And honestly? I really wish this book dove deeper into their relationship. The slow-burn 🔥 tension was great, but I was dying for it to get hotter 🥵 more intense, and way spicier 🌶️ The chemistry between Annette and Rigo had so much potential to go to some really exciting places, but we only get little teases. Seriously, I wanted more of them breaking all the rules and losing control. I just know it would have made the whole thing even more thrilling 😩😩

Anyway, this book 📕 is filled with gothic vibes, betrayal and questionable morals. If you’re into dark, stabby, revenge-fueled ⛽️fantasy with a side of slow-burn torture, then congrats—you just found your next obsession. If not? Well, sucks to suck 🤷‍♀️

OBSESSED with this book. I need everyone to read it and freak out with me RIGHT NOW. I binged it in two days. I couldn't put it down. I do not have time to draw fanart but I am sorely tempted. I am transformed.

I am FLOORED with how good this book was. I don't know what's more impressive - that this whole story was told in only 300 pages, or that the pacing was so flawless that I never felt lost or bored. Greer is undoubtedly a skilled writer and I can't wait to dive into her other books.

I am a huge fan of the protagonist Annette. Her whole vibe is *chef's kiss*. She's all "yeah yeah, nun of an undead poison cult, whatever, what's important is I am VALEDICTORIAN and I EARNED MY AWARD and if I don't get it I will BURN THIS PLACE TO THE GROUND." What a mood! I love a FMC who's deeply unlikable and makes terrible decisions. They are so much fun. Annette is petty, vengeful, mean-spirited, out for blood, about to make every bad choice she can. I love her. She is my spirit animal. I want to adopt her as my daughter. This is the kind of autistic representation I needed - we don't all have the time or ability to be likable and sweet, we have vengeance to do!

The worldbuilding is also god-tier. Subtle but SO COOL. This would make an excellent horror video game. I am deeply impressed that an author managed to take such a small place (literally JUST the one abbey) in such a short time and make it deeply, disturbingly cool. I wanted to know more about the death cult murder nuns!

If the protagonist being unlikable is not a selling point to you, 1) avoid The Cruel Prince also, and 2) this one's not for you. Not everyone gets it. I can definitely see Annette not being everyone's thing, because she's just like me and I'm definitely not everyone's thing. But if you like a book and its characters to be INTERESTING, I cannot recommend this one enough.

SPICE + SPOILER TERRITORY

There is ONE spicy scene in this book, but it's very good, earned, and a great crash course in how autistics flirt (which is: we don't). "ummm you're in a towel." "yup." "......why." "because I want you." "oh ok me too" is literally how I started dating my husband. Mr Neurotypical Love Interest is very romantic and suave. Annette is decidedly not and I love it.

Damn, this book is good.

Overall rating: 4.5

I went into this book essentially blind and devoured it QUICKLY. It was definitely up a different alley than my usual reads, but I loved it all the same.
The plot was great. There were some predictions that I guessed correctly, but at other points I was thoroughly shocked. I was at no point bored during the book. It was gothic, dark, and vivid in its descriptions. It maintained my interest without being rushed or skimming over details. Instead, I felt fully immersed in the worldbuilding and plot progression.

Can we give it up for Annette? I hated her at first, and I loved that I hated her. She was inherently self-serving, rude, and to be frank, a brat. She was perfectly imperfect. Her actions made perfect sense in conjunction with her past traumas and sudden upheaval. I loved her journey during the novel, her consistent intelligence paired with her desire for revenge. I even loved that by the end of the novel, she was not perfect. She was still, to a degree, avoidant due to fear. But her growth was not to be ignored. Also, love to see black main characters. I loved the little notes about Annette—simply things like doing her hair were so strong and symbolic in my opinion (especially when compared to Narissa, but that’s a whole different story).

And Rigo!! I liked him a lot, but to be honest, I was there for Annette. He was a great addition, and I loved how the pair grew closer to each other. But honestly, he wasn’t a necessity in my opinion (no shade! Annette was just such a strong character on her own). That being said, I appreciate him not overriding the plot. The mystery and conflict still remained at the forefront despite his involvement. Live laugh love slowburns, but I wish we saw more of the romantic development besides lust and physical attraction.

I loved the antagonists too. I won’t go into depth with *who* the antagonists are, but their stories were all incredibly dynamic and added a lot to the story.

The author outdid herself with this one. I feel the withdrawal coming already. Those on the fence, don’t be. You might just find your newest obsession.

***I received an ARC from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review

Ever since Annette was dropped off at the convent by her parents when she was ten, Annette has been working towards earning her Chief Poisoness award. But when the ceremony took place, the new novitiate Narissa received the honor instead of her. Doomed to be a nun with no other purpose is unthinkable to Annette, so she begins to plot her revenge. Then, the perfect opportunity falls into her lap - the Prioress is coming to the abbey and there are so many preperations that need to be made. Someone needs to go down to the basement and organize the files. Annette volunteers for that task, hoping she will find something that can help her while she is down there. When she arrives down there she discovers an imprisoned demon named Rigo, held captive for more than twenty years. When Rigo offers Annette his assistance, she can’t help accepting. All he wants in exchange is his freedom–and the ancient relic Annette has accidentally bound to herself. Though the relic also believes in her cause and nurtures her wrath, its self-proclaimed holiness doesn’t quite add up, leaving her unsure who to trust.

This book was so good. I adored Annette. She was so feisty, and not at all nun-like. I really liked Rigo too, which is weird to say, because, hello, he was a demon, but he was the least demon-like demon i have ever read about. I was actually cheering on a romance between the two by the end of the book....how crazy is that? There was plenty of drama & intrigue, and although you had an idea of what might be going on, it was like you were looking at a puzzle with just a missing piece or two so the picture didn't completely make sense. If you love a good romantasy, then this should be right up your alley. Go check it out!

Annette is a nun in a garden themed religion. She has worked hard to become the best of her class ever since she was given over to the abbey at ten years old. Then, just like that, the award for top poisoner goes to a different nun. Annette, who never felt like she fit in at the abbey, quickly decides to sabotage the abbey recertification. If her plan works everything that year will have to get looked at and redone. She hopes this will lead to her getting her award. Along her path for revenge she teams up with a relic that talks to her in her head and a demon named Rigo.

Annette is the POV character. At first, I didn’t like Annette. She immediately jumped to revenge. Also, her attitude that the award was owed to her I found somewhat off putting. Over the course of the story I grew to really enjoy Annette and what I first thought was a weakness in character writing I came around on. Annette isn’t well liked by the others that live in the abbey and Greer shows the reader why that is. Greer also digs deeper so by the end of the story I feel like I watched Annette grow and mature. I started the story rolling my eyes at her childishness just to eventually understand why she acts the way she does. I ended the story cheering her on.

The world building was very interesting and pulled me in right away. A religion based around gardening? Nuns sticking their feet in dirt to ground themselves as part of their daily practice? Love all of that. I would like to see more stories take place in this world. I want to learn more about the world outside of the abbey. I want to learn more about the demons.

Overall, I enjoyed Poisoner’s Vengeance. The plot was pretty predictable, imo, but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story. The world building kept me reading till the plot picked up. The characters weren’t as fleshed out as I would have liked to see but we are only seeing them through Annette’s eyes. I’d recommend this to anyone that likes romantasy stories. I do hope Greer keeps writing in the world she created.

Thank you to NetGalley and Skull & Violet Books for providing me an advanced copy of this book.

this was an overall decent read, with an interesting backdrop and a wide cast of characters. however, it didn't really reach its true potential.

to start with, Annette's whole revenge plan and her hatred for Narissa literally came out of nowhere. there was no backstory to warrant such a strong and violent reaction from Annette. honestly, it felt like a weak motivator to somehow get the plot going.

speaking of the plot, there isn't much of one here. I'm a big believer that for a book to work, it needs to have a solid plot, with a strong and believable driving force. there needs to be a story told, a feeling evoked in the readers, a lesson to be learned, something. that wasn't the case here, because so little of the world was actually explored. for example, there's this big emphasis on Annette being an excellent poisoner, and yet we don't see any of that in the book, as well as the fact that there's no clear explanation regarding the rift between demons and nuns (or people in general).

now for the main characters, they felt pretty bland, because there wasn't enough time spent on them. Annette is vengeful and out to sabotage the abbey, but her motivations weren't good enough and it came off as her being pretty one-dimensional. similarly, Rigo is also quite shallowly portrayed and was only there when it was convenient for the storyline and to act as a guide for Annette. that's it. and because of this, the romance itself made no sense and it could have been removed from the book and not have it change anything.

what I did enjoy a lot was the writing. I liked the way it flowed, the pacing it created and the imagery it painted. that's why I was disappointed in the book, because the skill was there and it could have been a great book. while this one didn't work for me, I look forward to reading other works by the author in the future.

thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing and ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Where do I even begin with this book? While the beginning was a little slow to start, everything picked up pretty quickly around 25-30% in and I was hooked The world building was done so beautifully & I really appreciate the author’s attention to detail! It painted a wonderful picture of the gothic abbey and the world they live in!

Annette, while she was unlike by so many individuals in her abbey, was loved by me. How her inner thoughts and dialogue were written was something I relate to wholeheartedly as a neurodivergent individual. You can really tell she struggles with black/white thinking, especially at the beginning of the book. All she wanted was for her rights to be wronged, to get what was rightfully hers! She couldn’t understand why no one helped her because things were unfair! And so, the idea of revenge pops into her mind and I, for one, loved this for her!

Insert a relic that she finds in the archives that promised to help her get that award back and a mysterious, beautiful demon that she finds locked in a cell, and we got a whole gang to help Annette reach her goals! Or so we thought…

With twists at every turn and the tension building, this was a book I could NOT put down! I was drawn into the world and those in the abbey, drawn to Annette and then, drawn into the immersive plot. Not to mention that slow burn? I LOVE ME A SLOW BURN! Seriously though, this book was so deliciously good & I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for this world!

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving this review. All opinions are my own.

I loved Annette, the things she was mad about and how she reacted reminded me so much of myself. Having a character like Annette who knows what she wants and is willing to do anything to get it, I just love her. I also love her insecurities; she fears abandonment and is scared to ask someone for help. I love it when characters are not perfect. I love her skewed moral compass, while still being a nun, is so interesting. I also love that Annette is autistic or at the very least not neurotypical. The plot and world for this book were so interesting. I love how they are a group of nuns with the motto “To heal the sick and sicken the wicked.” I wish there had been a little more poisoning action as Annette is the best poisoner in her class; however, I do think Annette had other things going on that stopped that. The way her relationship with Rigo progressed was a little odd because she went from hating him and refusing to talk to him to like trusting him more than anything. However, I still loved Rigo and his golden retriever energy. The relationship's pacing made sense when you look at how Annette feels seen by someone for possibly the first time ever. This book was also tagged in NetGalley as a romance, which felt odd as romance is not a massive part of the plot. There is romance, do not get me wrong, but it is much more gothic fantasy and paranormal than romance. I did enjoy this book though. This book also has some well-written and interesting aspects of horror and suspense. Some of the descriptions were so perfect and uncomfortable, and I love it when an author can physically make me cringe because of how well they described something.

Poisoner's Vengeance by Talia Greer is a gothic fantasy that combines forbidden alliances and a dash of slow-burn romance. Set in a unique religious setting, the story follows Annette, a skilled poison-brewing nun seeking vengeance after being betrayed by those she trusted. Her path intertwines with Rigo, a demon imprisoned within the abbey, and together they forge a connection that challenges everything Annette once believed.

One of the novel’s greatest strengths lies in its world-building. The concept of a religious order dedicated to both healing and poisoning is captivating and new to my library. I just wish we saw more of Annette actually using her poison skills since the title set up that expectation.

Annette is a refreshing protagonist who is honest, unapologetically flawed, and driven by a desire for justice and recognition. While I initially expected a morally grey character, I found that her unwavering honesty and willingness to confront her self-serving thoughts made her relatable and compelling.

There are moments where the romance feels underdeveloped. Though marketed as a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers story, some readers might find the romantic tension between Annette and Rigo lacking in build-up. I think a glimpse into Rigo’s perspective could have made their bond feel deeper and more believable.

Overall, Poisoner's Vengeance is a captivating read that will appeal to those who love dark fantasy with morally complex characters. With its immersive world-building and a protagonist who dares to challenge conventions, it’s definitely worth picking up, even if the romance leaves you wanting a bit more.

Thank you kindly to NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for a review!

An interesting premise with clumsy execution and poorly developed characters. The pros are unexpected plot twists and a world with potential, but they’re overridden by annoying characters and writing that feels condescendingly obvious.

To their credit, the author tries to show and not tell, but when using obvious descriptors like ‘smooth like a snake’ they might as well just say the character is lying.

My next peeve is the protagonist, who is purely unlikeable. She is unkind, rude, and self-serving—this is all right if she’s written true, but the author clumsily tries to redeem her in the latter half of the book as a reluctant heroine without giving her any character development to make it believable. I actually liked that she had insecurities and uncharitable thoughts as I thought that meant we could delve into her psyche. She relates to a mysterious figure we latter learn about, but it’s a red herring that doesn’t serve to expand on her characterization.

The romance is also completely unbelievable because they barely interact positively—we only get the sense that Annette is horny and her physical attraction is all that drives their relationship, if it can be called that. Furthermore, her counterpart ‘demon’ is that in name only. Tying back to how this world is a disappointment: we never learn why demons are ‘bad’ when we meet more morally gray/evil nuns than we do demons. The one demon we are exposed to is an emotionally intelligent gentleman so I can only assume nuns vs. demons is a case of interspecies prejudice rather than good vs. evil.

In conclusion, I think it’s an interesting read to imagine the universe, but a waste of time for thoughtful reading with its extensive reliance on suspension of disbelief.

Thank you for allowing me an early copy of this book. This book left me wanting. It was a 2.5 read for me. The author did a great job with the writing, and it seemed like she had a good handle on the world building, but never quite made it.

Anette irked me. I don’t know if the author wanted her to be a hypocrite, but it was bad. Anette tripped another novice all because of a song? Then would proclaim she is lonely and no one likes her. I wouldn’t like her either. There was nothing to like about her. She was vengeful, and sure, she grew in the book, but she had some malicious intent. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy quirky characters. However, she went out of her way to hurt people, but then acted like a victim. Also, nothing is ever owed to anyone. You do not have a right to claim anything, because someone said you could. They’re allowed to change their mind.

I knew about the relic immediately. It wasn’t too hard to figure out. It was predictable. However, the manipulative games between the higher ups was intriguing. I wanted to know who the wronged party was the whole book.

Rigo was the only saving grace. He was a good dude, and placated Anette well, but he could have done better. Also, if you go into this thinking it’s a romance, it only turned into one at the last 70%. No build up, just straight into it. It was a predictable book. It had an interesting premise, but did not live up to its full potential.

It was hard to get into. It took me over 50% of the way through the book to actually get into. The sister was petty, but then would go on poor me rampages. It didn’t work for me.

Petty revenge is always a good focus for a book. I am certainly not above being petty and trying to get revenge on people I feel who have wronged me in the past. However, Annette is an apprentice nun working towards becoming a permanent member of her order. With her high grades and praise in poison's she is certain to win the coveted prize of being Chief Poisoner of the abbey which will also allow her a level of freedom to travel the lands.

I think billing this book as a romance novel is a bit of a stretch as the romance really takes a backseat to the rest of the action and mystery. On one hand she literally has a ring which she believes is a relic of her religion. However, it is talking to her in her mind and she is not certain if she should listen to it's guidance. There is also a demon, Rigo, who has been imprisoned for the past twenty years and he only wants his freedom and the ring but he is willing to help her reach her goal.

I like that the characters are complex but Annette is bit of a wicked sort of nun which makes her kind of likeable and kind of petty and dramatic. I think my only criticism is that though there is a spicy scene towards the end, this was one of the slowest burn romance books I have picked up in a while. So putting on the cover that it's a romance fantasy may be a bit misleading. I think they should have considered gothic quest for vengeance or the like.

Firstly thank you netgalley for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Secondly, while I was looking forward to reading this, I’m sad to say I had to DNF this book. The writing was amazing don’t get me wrong however the FMC wasn’t it for me. She made it soooo hard for me to continue with the book because of her actions and internal dialogues. Mainly the fact that she gains such big and intense hatred for the other girl just from one encounter. Her proceeding to hurt that girl both physically and verbally didn’t sit right with me as well. Overall I just didn’t like the fact that her hatred for this girl she just met once is the driving force behind the plot, it doesn’t feel a strong enough of a motive to go out of her way and make a deal with a demon. Now I know that the FMC is written as an autistic rep and I do understand that there is soooo many different types of autism when it comes to the spectrum but I just couldn’t keep going when it was used as an excuse for the main character just to be pure mean and evil and petty, just wanting to hurt other people for the sake of jealousy and pettiness. Like I mentioned the writing is good and I wouldn’t mind reading more of the author’s work in the future and I know a lot of people will like this but unfortunately this book wasn’t for me at all.
